Sorex ornatus
1 mi SE San Benito Rdale, 4400; San Benito Co., Calif.
Trapped three specimens of this shrew, one each on the nights of August 7, 8, & 10. The one caught the 8th was caught very close to 9 PM as I heard the trap go off and went to investigate finding the shrew.
In each case the bait was fresh walnut meat moistened in the mouth & squashed on the treadle of the trap & all animals were caught on damp ground near the stream & under the dwarf willows (Salix breweri) which grew there. (3 shrews caught in 190 trap/nights) = 63.3 trap/nights per shrew.
