Journal #18.
August 13, Gini & Coalinga, Fresno Co. to Berkeley, Alameda Co.
Got up early & collected traps--caught one Dipodomys
californicus in the trap spring. Caught seemed
very small considering the number of
Dipos signs &c. went out hunting for Bell
sparrow but saw none. Saw the following
animals near by: Anna & Selasphorus humilis
(in tobacco along draw), Linnet, Shrike, Sparrow
hawkle, Kingbird, Mourningdove, Pintail (20 or
so flew over the previous night), young
lizards (probably Uta), Ammospermophilus,
cotton tail, Citellus beecheyi, Jack rabbit, & Dr
Miller added Secrete Thrasher & Coyote. Drove
back into town for ice to keep specimens &
then to Mendota collecting Horned larks
on the way. Ate lunch in Mendota & from
there turned up to the Panoche valley through
much land devoted to raising melons.
The lower part of Panoche creek has fair
growth of Scirpus & Typha & looked very
good for Song Sparrows, yellow throats &
even marsh wrens. There were also Atiples
flats for Bell Sparrows followed up the
valley (where we saw Magpies & Lewis Woodpele
& many horned larks) & came into Pairies &
thence to Berkeley where we arrived about 7:15 PM.
