Rustica 1947 Otus asio Sept 9 3 1/2 mi N, km E, McCleary ht, 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., California. This species is quite thick about the Marting cabin. We have taken 4 to date and have heard at least one more. The blue oak woodland & [illegible] grass underneath must be quite favorable habitat for them. The two I collected had 3 sternalmates (in 1) and 1 sternal mates, I could neither & 1 weth about 3/4" long, brown (reddish). [illegible] about this shape. The birds call once or twice shortly after sunset & then are silent presumably feeding until 7:45 or 8 when they start calling - the fairly high, even till. They also call in the small hours of the morning and again about dawn. But relatively speaking they call little and are rather hard to get to call back.
