Falco sparverius
2420 Channing Way, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
June 27, 1942.
I have noticed a pair of Sparrow Hawks around Telegraph Avenue between Channing Way & Haste Street for some time. On June 21, I saw the ? enter a hole about 6" x 6" in the face of the building in which Hagstrom's Food Store is located. The building is built of brick and there are two series of holes of this size on the front of the building. The nest is in the fourth one up in the more northern row. Today, I saw the ? entering the same hole with food for the young. I could not make out what the food was. The ? occasionally uses the large sign on the Medio Dental building as a perch & eats there. There are at least five other series of holes on the sides and back of the building in which the nest is located and it is odd that under the circumstances the hawks should nest on a busy street side.
