Ruston 1947 Journal 31, 8mi. W, 3mi. N McArthur, 2100 ft., Kern Co., California. Sept. 17 Set up tent & did some packing up after we finished skinning. In the evening went to the Turrielmanns for dinner of venison steaks. It was particularly nice to get out of the cold damp wind blowing down the canyon. Bedded partly under a tarpaulin. Sept. 18 Breakfasted & broke camp leaving by 6:30a.m. Left Salt & Delwel at the In Panga ranch & drove over the mountains to Pozo to return gas to the forest rangers. It must have rained here in the night. There is a fire break along the top of the mountain which would be a good way to reach the Coulter Pines a little south of the road over the top. Drove back to Shandon via the "metropolis" of Creston with the usual 3 or four characters - half dead - holding up the front of the store. Stopped at Dan McMillans where we met the others and after a short visit left about 10:30. Had lunch at Paso Robles where we left Bill Salt & drove back to Berkeley taking turns driving the trucks. Arrived about 6:30 p.m. After dropping P. Delwel off in Alameda, future field work would be advantageous in this country - especially in spring on McTherney Mountains. The Dario Marting cabin for instance would be a particularly attractive place in April or so when the vegetation is at its best (according to the McMullans) and there would be a chance of finding such things as Black-chinned Sparrow.
