July 19 6 mi NE Jacala to Mexico, D. F.
Between Zimapan and Mexico (mostly cactus desert)
called last 40 miles). we saw: woodpecker,
vermillion Flycatcher, Black Vulture, Barn Swallow,
Paven (C. Corax), Thrasher with short bill (T. callata?),
Rock Wren, Mexican Gull Finch. After doing some
errands in Mexico City we drove to the Desierto de los
Leonos had supper & while looking for a place
to camp found two Mexicans who had a week-
end cabin in the Desierto & we stayed with them
over night.
July 20 Around Mexico City
Bried & Break/fasted in the Desierto between
6:30 and 9:50 AM & saw the following: Red Warbler,
Mexican Junco, Penthestes sclateri, Pipilo macronyx,
Olive warbler, Basilentemus belli, Brown Creeper,
atlapetes pileatus, Robin, Guarmonon miranticeps,
Red-shafted flicker (Catharus occidentalis), From the
Desierto to and around the city we saw the following
birds: House Finch, Barn Swallow, White-eared
Hummer, Blue-throated Hummer, Brown Towhee,
Plagiospiza superciliosa, Shrike, Couch Jay, Chipping
Sparrow, Penthestes sclateri, & Song Sparrow.
Drove to the National Museum & saw the meager
exhibits, & later went to the Floating Gardens of
Xochimilco and went through
the canals in a flat-bottomed
scow. The gardens were once floating corn fields in
