Red Storm 1942 Journal 21. Berkeley to Big Sur, Monterey Co., Calif. April 24 Left Berkeley with Edgar Arthur Smith, Frank Pichelka, Walt Dalquest, Martin Tomich, & Sherline Colby about 4:45 PM. Stopped for supper in San Jose and reached the State park at Big Sur about 10:30 PM. Where we met Mr. Warden Kenyon who showed us to our camps and lighted a camp fire for us. We stayed around the fire until about 12 when we retired. The night sounds around camp were few. Occasionally a Western Flycatcher called & also Hyla regilla. The camp is situated in a grove of Tanbark Oak, Laurel and small Redwoods by a small, grassy meadow 100 yds or more south of the Big Sur River. April 25 Awakened at 7 AM by a screech from a Steller Jay. After breakfast went up the river about a mile, and had a swim. Said Aunt Williams arrived about 10:30 AM and we left to look for Sea Otters. We drove south on Route 1 to Anderson Creek. Seeing Sea Otters at 4 points (see specific accounts). Among the birds seen along the coast were, Brandt Cormorant, Turkey Vulture, Western Gull, Black Oystercatcher, White-thr. Swift 2 (very close); Violet-Green Swallow, Cowus sp?, Wren tit, Cal. Thrasher, White-a-Spanout, Song Sparrow, Sayuli Bunting & Hermit Thrush (singing on road in N-facing slope of Big Sur Valley). Weather: Clear the whole time we were here but fairly cold - especially the second night.
