Big Sur & Vicinity, Monterey County, California.
Apr 25 Returned to camp in the park about 2 PM,
lunched and then walked up the river to
the gorge climbed up the hill on the south
side of the gorge where we found Selaginella,
Cheilanthes californica, Yucca whipplei. Besides
the usual common bear & found Polystilum
seulatum or a very similar form. We saw signs of
Mole - coon and saw or caught Thommys, Sorex
troubridgii, Peromyscus maniculatus, P. californicus,
Red, gray & ground squirrels, and deer. The herps
found nearby were Ensatina, Batrachoseps, Hyla,
Rana boylii, King snake (getulus), Striped Racer, Garter
snake, Diadophis, Hemionotes m., Emmesess, and.
Sceloporus o. Squirrels were conspicuous and
at least 8 species were present including an
herbaceous one with a light magenta heel and
yellow wings S. stiversi . There were large alders
along the river, a belt of oaks on the south-facing
slope and above this large hills covered
with a green chaparral which as far as we
could tell contained largely Baccharis and
Antennaria. (no Adenostoma) On the river near
camp I saw a ? heronganser probably an
American but I did not get a good look
at her. Heard a quail horned owl in the
wening and retired about 11:30.
