Russtor9 1942 22. Big Sur & Vicinity, Monterey County, California. Apr 25 Returned to camp in the park about 2 PM, lunched and then walked up the river to the gorge climbed up the hill on the south side of the gorge where we found Selaginella, Cheilanthes californica, Yucca whipplei. Besides the usual common bear & found Polystilum seulatum or a very similar form. We saw signs of Mole - coon and saw or caught Thommys, Sorex troubridgii, Peromyscus maniculatus, P. californicus, Red, gray & ground squirrels, and deer. The herps found nearby were Ensatina, Batrachoseps, Hyla, Rana boylii, King snake (getulus), Striped Racer, Garter snake, Diadophis, Hemionotes m., Emmesess, and. Sceloporus o. Squirrels were conspicuous and at least 8 species were present including an herbaceous one with a light magenta heel and yellow wings S. stiversi . There were large alders along the river, a belt of oaks on the south-facing slope and above this large hills covered with a green chaparral which as far as we could tell contained largely Baccharis and Antennaria. (no Adenostoma) On the river near camp I saw a ? heronganser probably an American but I did not get a good look at her. Heard a quail horned owl in the wening and retired about 11:30.
