2427 Channing Way, Berkeley, Alameda Co., California December 29, 1941 Davis Xmas census (cont'd) waterfowl blocks from the other end. When a passing airplane flushed about 1/2 of them and the swirling masses immediately brought to mind species of metal in aluminum paint when it is stirred. We tried in several ways to estimate the numbers - by blocking them off in thousands and then tens of thousands. Our final estimate which we think is very conservative was Whistling Swan 20 (probably many more); Canada Goose 5,000; Lesser Canada Goose, 15,000; Cackling Goose, 10+; White-fronted Goose, 30,000; Lesser Snow Goose, 80,000; Ross Goose, 20+; Anatine Ducks 225,000 (probably 98 % Pintail, others identified Mallard 50+, Baldpate 75+; Green-wing Teal, 30+; Shoveller 50+) We returned to Davis and went to the creeks behind the campus where we found a pair of Screech Owls. Pheasants were very numerous- we saw about 100 on the road leading east to the Woodland Causeway in a stretch of about 2 miles. Temperature at start 44°F and at finish (5:30 PM) 46°F. Weather partly cloudy and with very little wind. Census sent to Audubon Magazine for publication. Total 99 species + subspecies and 363,904+ individuals.
