Ate 2 chipos & a screech owl which Dr Miller had collected. The former very good & tender with not a very strong taste, the owl was dark meat & rather tough but had a good, gamey flavor. Retired about 9 PM. Aug 10. Set up about usual time - watch had stopped so I set it at 5:45 which proved to be nearly correct. At breakfast ran trap line - found 2 Peromyscus truei & 1 P. maniculatus the former under chaparral shrubs about 5 feet above (meadow) the stream bottom and the latter in the meadow proper. Returned to camp & got gun, etc. & started off down stream to collect birds. Went down about three miles, soil & vegetation (some scrub golden oak was found) changed very little as I went down.
