Restored 1941. Journal. 6 July 20 Around Mexico D.F. the time of the lucas but continued piling on of dirt and buried them to the bottom. Now it is a series of corn fields with a maze of canals in between & many lombardy poplars along the edges. There were few flowers - The water was muddy & had a few water lilies & water hyacinths & a lot of duckweed & wolfia or Wolffield. The birds were disappointing - Song Sparrows, Barn Swallows, Brown Towhees, Thrushes, and a male Oriole ( Icterus abeilli ). Spent the night in the crucl in the Desierto de los Leones. July 21 Around Mexico D.F. Left the Desierto early & spent until about 2 PM. doing errands & shopping in Mexico City. Later drove out North of town to Cuautitlan & back by another road. It is mostly farming country doing quite flat although surrounded by hills. The main crops are corn & agave. The birds are mostly familiar, Song Sparrows, Brown towhees, House finches, Mex. Goldfinches, Thrushes, Meadowlarks, House Sparrows. In the Plaza of Cuautitlan was a bird on the ground which looked at first glance like a house sparrow & acted similarly. When I put the glasses on it, I saw that blue on the head & some chestnut wing bars. The rest of the bird resembled in shape & actions a House Sparrow so much that I am inclined to believe it might have been a Hybrid. Drove back to the Desierto for the night. caught glimpses of Pepocarpent, & Thrush.
