Rwstories 1942 Grasshopper Sparrow Berkeley Hills, Contra Costa Co., Calif. June 20, 1942 7 to 9 AM While hunting skinkles on a hill about 2 miles SE of Grizzly Peaks with Tom Rodgers, Lou met Corvan, Joe Marshall, Hilton Hildebrand, Viola Hemmels & Janet Failla, I heard the characteristic song of this species. The birds were in tall gress on the eastern slope of the hill. We tracked the song down and saw two and heard at least three more. This must be a breeding colony. The grass they were inhabiting was not as dry as most on the hillside, being in more moist pockets. Lou tried to collect one but was unsuccessful.
