Black-footed Albatross

April 20 "S.S. Mills Victory", Richmond to 5 miles w. Farallon Is,
& Return, San Pablo Bay & Return.
Saw 810 (3 at once - rest singles) including
2 or 3 white-rumped birds. The first was
near the light ship as was the last. The
wind was relatively light and the birds
flapped more than I have seen them
flap before. Two (separately) came to
within 100 yards of the ship.
April 27 "S.S. Tulane Victory", Richmond to 80 miles w.
Farallon Is., & Return, San Pablo Bay & Pacific Ocean.
First albatross seen while were about
abeast of the Farallones & the last on the
way in about 5 miles south of the
Farallones. The most I saw together was
5. At one point we came upon four
sitting together on the water. This was about
11:35 when we were 20 miles or so west of
the Farallones. One of these birds was light
underneath thus, The white of the breast
faded gradually into
the grayish brown
of the throat & upper
breast. The white at
the base of the bill
was present as usual
but the white on the
rump formed a wider
