Reostorer 1941 Journal 22 #8. 2427 Channing Way, Berkeley, Alameda Co., California December 29, 1941 (Davis Xmas census cont'd) a Bewick's Swan. killed Marsh Wren and a Snowy Egret. From here we went out on the levee where, in the reeds were patches of Collemboles on many of the puddles. The patches looked like Wolffiaella only instead of green, they were purplish liked the purple color which Fe2O3 sometimes assumes. The river was high and on the ricefields to the east of the levee was an enormous block of waterfowl which extended the two miles to the woodland causeway and was about 1/4 mile wide. The mass was white with Snow Geese but there were many more dark birds, mostly pintail present. There were 5 Least-Eared Owl's on the marsh at this point. From here we drove to Woodland to pick up Yellow-billed Magpie and Cowbird and stopped at the land where the large sugar beet refinery in woodland dumps its waste liquors. This must be an excellent supply of food for protozoa & invertebrates as there are always good numbers of shorebirds there. Most odd was a concentration of about 50 Wilson's Snipe at this point. Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, and Dowitchers which were present Thanksgiving weekend were not seen on the census. Next we drove to the causeway where we had a look at the
