January 14
2 mi. N. Occidental, Sonoma Co., Calif to Berkeley, Ala. Co.
Awoke at 7:30 AM & picked up traps. The 36 under
redwood stumps & oaks yielded 6 Peromyscus maniculatus
and the 6 in the field - 2 microtus californicus.
Walt caught one sorex nowbridgii in a turocks
of Junius in a damp spot. He also set steel traps
but without success. He saw tracks of coy, mink,
& wild cat. Birds were not abundant or
conspicuous we saw Turkey Vulture 3, Red-
tailed Hawk 2, Sharp-shin 1, Chestnut-backed Chickadee
sub., Creeper 4 (singing), Winter Wren 1, Hermit Thrush
2, Varied Thrush 1, Golden Kinglet sub, Hutton
Vireo 1 singing, Fox Sparrows 2, & Song Sparrow.
We collected Batrachoseps, Ensatina, and Triturus
granulosus?], & Ensatina Eneides lugubris and
saw two small Scelopous. The bottom land
along the stream and the west slope
above it are wooded with Tanbark oaks,
Redwood, and Douglas fir. On the east
slope there was scattered brush with
small Douglas firs and a good many
cypress. Road cuts showed the basic
rock to be Serpentine. These hills looked
like a good place for Pellaea densa (Cheilanthes
siliquosa) but are owned by the Sonoma
chrome company and are well fenced.
Along the west slope we found and
followed an old railroad bed which
