Blacks-footed Albatross
4.a.
April 27 "S.S. Tillane Victory", Richmond to 80 miles west of
Farallons, & Return, San Pablo Bay & Pacific Ocean
band than usual. The central part of the
side of the bill was pinkish. The bird
followed us for four hours but seldom
came close enough to get a really good
view of the pinkish bill or the white
around the base of the bill. This bird
probably represents the extreme amount
of white in the underparts for this species.
The light spot near
the tip of the wing is
due to light primary shafts
and is fairly conspicuous.
May 11 "S.S. Trinity Victory", Richmond to 5 miles w. Farallons, &
Return, San Pablo Bay & Pacific Ocean
angle of bill when bird is in
flight. Overhang food & aft about
equal. Decided bulge at sternum & taper fwd & aft.
May 29 "SS Bagayette Victory"
June 5 "SS Hunter Victory" Same route as above
Several birds seen on both these trips appear to be
moulting. In one case a primary or two were
missing & in several there was a marked contrast
between the dark new feathers & the faded
old ones.
