1943. Jan. 1. Return trip from Boulder Creek. (See 1942) Jan. 2. Colder. Birds had not been fed for several days but when I put out food several Fox Sparrows and two Spotted Towhees came almost immediately to get the oatmeal. Put out a fresh pomegranate. In the afternoon I took a walk up Panoramic Stile at the Way to the top of the hill. On the south side of the hill there was no wind (from N.W.) and it was quite warm. Birds were very quiet but I checked off the following (2:30-3:30 p.m.): W. Bluebirds - 9 on electric wires opp. 21 Morewood, Purple Finch 1 x 2; R.-c. Knight 7 - quietly; Wrentit 3 pros. Anna Hummer 1 singing, perched on bare branch opp. juniper (Dartie place); I heard farther on, Brown Towhees 3 pros.; Spotted Ti. 2. Thrush 1 singing (up Nainlett Canyon beyond road). Sh. Sh. Then he flew directly to the red-hot poker just under the upper section of the road (running west) (he) there several minutes and returned to perch. Preened about 3 minutes. Then he flew and incal- [illegible] toward the acacia trees to west. I could not follow him as I was looking toward sun. Saw one Cooper Hawk, soaring. Only birds singing: Anna Hummers, Wren-tit, Song Sparrow. Sparrow Hawk (top of hill) Jan-13. At 2:30 p.m. I walked up Hamilton Canyon To the switch back. Weather beautiful, warm, sunny.
