Oct. 18. Rain at twices during night. Colder with big fleecy
white clouds in very blue sky. Breezy. Very few birds
Hermit Thrush conspicuous. Chickadees, Pygmy Whitethatches
Oct. 20 Rain except p.m. Birds that come frequently to pool, for
coffee berries or for oatmeal; 3 G-c. Sparrows, 2 Ber. Torr.
2 Sf. Towhees, (1 Hermit Thrush). Also acc. jacks juncoes.
The bird I thought might be an inn. Whitethroat is
a Golden-crown with the center crown just beginning
to show as a narrow line--also white under tail covert
Oct. 21. Berkeley. Beautiful after the rain.
Oct. 22. J.T.B. Great-horned Owl gave a very loud three-
syllabled call just outside my windows. Flew
when I turned over in bed.
Oct. 27. Lady Birds walked up to Poultry Farm, back by
Campus Road. Birds scarce: 1 Redtail, see. Pic. Kids,
1 Phoebe (giving three ayl. song). Cedar Jays,
15 new tits (a.g.), Blackbird Wren, (Hutton Vireo?)
8 G-b. Goldfinches on vine (bright plum), 1 fl. junco.
For 2 Sf. (calling), Bv. 9 Sf. Towhees, 1 q.p. Crowned Sp.
(Stadium Rime). (Fox Sp. a.g., H. Thrush lone)
Mrs. Fletcher told me that when they went up to
Rubicon Beach, Lake Tahoe in late Aug. They
found a dead Merganser in the cottage - must
have come down the chimney. Again end of
Sept. a dead Copper Hawk which had crashed
through a window. (Last attempt to lead bird trip)

Oct. 31. Boulder Creek: J.T.B. reported Varied Thrushes. Clear.
Last night - cold. Light frost early a.m. Very few birds
until 3 p.m. when a flock of quail crossed near
gateway. Then at 3:30 when the area to West
came into shadow birds came from that direction:
