Berkeley Aug.25. A Redb. Nutthalta was calling across
Woodwood Road. Hutton Shrub still here.
Aug.26. A Russet t.Thrush called at dawn. Virgin's
Wren about.
Aug.29. Miss Gladding drove us down to Boulder Creek-
Dumbarton Bridge. White Pelicans 350t,
Am. Egrets 6t, Pintails 100t. Willets 100t,
Fared Grelbe 1, Black b. Bllver a few, Sandpipers
L.&W., Bl. Turnstones 22, Avocets 40t .
N. Chalapopes >, 200t. Gulls (Calif?) molting.
No Swallows. (Berkeley - a Tanager near town)
Aug.30. Boulder Creek. 18 Sparrow Hawks crossed the
meadow and alighted on an electric pole.
A Barn Owl was heard several times last night.
Chicksadees ab. and with them Miss G. saw
Two Black-Throated Gray Warblers. Pugny Nut-
hatches in the tops of the Redwoods. Nuthat-
Vires heard often. The young Spotted Towhees
(second brood) begin to show the color
pattern of adult. Still give calls of young
and fledg. occ. by parent. Large flock of
quail (20-30).
Sept. 3. Had to do business in Santa Cruz.
W. Cliff Drive. 3 - 3:45 p.m., 500± Shearwaters,
Br. Pelicans 58t, Cormorants a few, Surf
Scoters 12-15, 8 air full pl., Willets 10 in air,
Phalaropes - 3700± on ocean, mostly
outside of the one row of breakers, Some
went through (or over) the breakers. Flit
mishore at times, circling back to ocean.
Were they Red Phalaropes ? Winter fl.
