1943.
May 20. At 11:15 a.m I went down to watch the Rph.-wq.
Swallows. The holes in the wall were in the shade
and no swallows came during the 15 min. I watched.
Then two flew in from the east, over the wall of
the stadium and disappeared. Watched ten
minutes but did not see them again. Then I
Crossed by the Runway to the dairy road and saw
two flying toward the stadium. I went to the
poultry farm and returned by Campion Rd. but
did not see them again. Perhaps they comes
to the holes only after the wall is warmed by the
afternoon sun. Saw a Sh.Sh. Hawk.
I found three Lazuli Buntings singing: one
above the dairy where I saw him May 11, one above
the swimming pool perched in the tallest twig of
Australian tea plant, one opp. poultry farm on
decked tip of a conifer—all singing freely—
A Tolea W. was perched in the elderberry inside
the sw. pool fence, singing. A pair of quail
nearby, male giving guard call. One peculiar
song at upper end of sw. pool I could not
identify. Cali Jays feeding yq. at No.1. Campion's.
In the afternoon I sat on the porch and,
heard besides the usual birds a Hairy Woodpecker
west of house (yesterday also), Sh. Goldfinch + Willow Goldfinch
flying over. Families - Bushtits (yq feeding themselves);
Lutescent Warblers (being fed by parents) but
May 21. Beautiful warm day. While I worked in the garden
a Tanager flew to the water spout under the eaves
and almost immediately a female tanager at the same
spot, probably after spider? Did not follow the
male to the lower box. Must have a nest nearby.
