Jan. 2 (Cont’d) As we passed 21 Rosewood two Anna Hummers
were buzzing about, very close together. Finally one
alighted on the roof of the garage, the other flying at
it. We could see flaming red on only one and judge
it was a pair.
Jan. 5. Slightly warmer. A walk to the Mann place in
Hamilton Canyon at 4 p.m. Saw a flock of 8+
Quail in the last garden above the road. - Saw
only 1 Aud. Warbler and heard only 1 Rc. Kitelet.
A Varied Thrush was taking berries from the
Loquat bush in the Hitchinson garden at the
mouth of Strawberry Canyon.
An animal (O'possum) took the pomegranate
last night. I heard him about 3 a.m. pushing
the abalone shell about (I had left it with
oatmeal on the porch floor.)
Jan. 8. The wind has been blowing down the canyon since
Jan. 3. Birds have come for food between gales -
Jan. 9. Quiet and warmer. Threw the abalone shell
higher and filled it with oatmeal and swept
out the pool. Birds came immediately and
are much more easily seen now the shell
is not covered by ivy. For Sparrows, Spotted
Towhees, Song Sparrows. Never any quail.
Jan. 10. When we took a walk in Hamilton Canyon
we saw two Cooper Hawks soaring high above
the trees. Wires a pomegranate on bird branch.
Jan. 11. Dense title fog. James heard a Red-breasted
Nuthatch near Mrs. Olversteds at mouth
of canyon.
Jan. 12. Faculty Section went to Mrs. Jory's.
Heard Cornell bird records. Clear, warmer.
