1943 Aug. 11. I saw a Ruffed-backed Thrush at our entrance Taking berries from the wild currant. Finches are heard often (elderberries, blackberries, cherry, plums are ripe). Fog in morning, Clear afternoon. Aug. 13. I heard a Rob. Thrush at dawn - called once - W. Flycatchers - calls of young. Hutton Vireo heard. Lutescent Warbler. Cool. flew against din window. Killed. Aug. 16, 1943. Returned to Boulder Creek. Dumbarton Bridge. Not much mud explored: 11:45 a.m. White Pelicans 500+. Am. Egrets 3, Paintails 50+, Sph. Avocets (West end) Willetts 200-300, Sandpipers (mostly Least)<, Godwits 2 (W. end), n. Phalaropes (gray plumage, Scattered, no wind) 300+, Calif (?) Gulls 75+. Forster Terns 1, Avocets 12 grom young together (Drove Kenneth Ford) Aug. 16-23. Duval go through several times a day. Aug. 18 649. +male on Boiling Creek. Table. 649. + females at pool. Almost grown 49. Kingfisher, moody Aug. 16-18. Coast Jay did not come to Table when male Br. Towhee was feeding. Calif. Jay heard occ. Chickadees - occ. fl., Brush Tit scarce, Pyg. Wren - occ. in tall trees. Robins, sec. calling near Camp Joy Aug 17. Hutton Vireo often, Pil. Warbler one on Aug. 18; Sp. Towhee, the paint feeds, female cup. takes food to 49. in near by bushes. Brown Towhees, for, both very ragged. No sign of nest or young - Anna H., one over garden. Turkey Buzzard Aug. 20 (J.T.A.), Morning doves flew up from beyond trees on north side of roadway. A few W. Flycatchers - calls of 49. One sweet set call heard Aug. 21. Long silences with no birds calling. Aug. 22. Saw three birds flying high, close together: showed all white underneath (Shore birds?) 9 a.m. Duval 2 fl. 12 each in front garden. Aug 23. Three Robins flew over L.A. Highway near Restaurant.
