Feb.12 (Cortin) Spotted Towhee 1 sp. whisper song; Br.T. 3 p.m.
1 Song 8p. singing. (Oak mothers abundant.)
Usual birds at feeding table (juncos came only one day)
Call of Button Vireo in distance like "loud peep of chicken"
(Hoffman); near by "zweerk, zweerk, zweerk".
Feb.13. Very warm. Light breeze from east. Many
insects in the air.
Feb.14. A Sparrow Hawk perched on top of an
electric pole in Hamilton Canyon held
some animal or small bird between his toes
and pulled it to pieces. By going above the
switch back at The Mann place I could
look at it from the level but could
not make sure it was a bird. When he
flew he took his catch in his talons.
Feb.16. The Faculty group walked from the
end of Prospect St. up Strawberry Canyon
(Canyon Road to No. 55) then up the hill to
our house. Then we walked via Mosswood
to Panoramie and into Hamilton Canyon.
Feb.17-20. Spring weather. Blossoming trees along streets.
At home: H. P. Finch (Pumpkin Finch?) Same birds come to feeding table. Robins
V. Vireo Blackbird very numerous along road across campus.
S. sp. (Blackbird?) eating colowaster berries (crenelata?)
Feb.21. It began to rain during night and this
> morning a Lutecent Warbler is singing across the
road.
Feb.22-25. Heard Lut. Warbler in same place every
day. Other birds as usual. P. Finch
singing, sometimes soft voice, or full voice.
