J.T.A. said Grosbeak sang next of house -
July 18. As we walked home from dinner at the
Women's Faculty Club I noticed a pair of quail
across the driveway from the club - no young
visible. (I was told that a brood left a nest
in the petunia bed before July 1). On the
lawn back of Cowell Hospital was another
pair of quail with just one chick (1/4 size)
Chilly fog most of the day. Light shower a.m.
July 19. Chilly fog all day, I heard songs of Tolmie
Warbler just east of house, Hutton Vireo, Titus,
Purple Finch (near plum tree). Family of young
juncos near lower pool. Heard H. Woodpecker. Lane.
July 21. Miss Sutton took us in her car as far as
Los Gatos - arrived 11 a.m. After lunch we went
to the park below the bridge over the creek. Many
people esp. at swimming pool. Birds There:
Anthony's Heron - in flight, seen twice.
Kingfisher - once. Anna's Hummingbird - one bird.
Calif. Woodpecker, W. Flycatcher - family together.
Wood Pewee - chased Steller Jay from oak under which
we were sitting.
Black Shrike - down stream - (below School House)
Titmouse (one), Bushtits - a group of twelve,
stopped to feed in thistles (aphid?). Some had
shorter tails - Chickadees - six. Hutton Vireo (1).
Steller Jay (1), Grosbeak near School house (call)
G.B. Goldfinch heard, Linnet (in thistle), juncos (on
ground), Sp. Towhee, Brown Towhee, Song Sparrow
(moulting) Continued by bus at 4 p.m.
Clear, warm day.
