Boulder Crest 1943 July 1. Hairy Woodpeckers are heard every day, usually in the direction of Joy Camps (north). Today one came into some thin shrubs just below the kitchen window, backed down the main stem (6 ft.) to the ground, hopped on ground, then into a still smaller shrub. 4q. sp. Torches under broom. July 2. James heard a Hermit Thrush singing across the river on the slope of Ben Lomond Mt. July 4. J. saw a large bird alight in a dead tree on the edge of the river below the house. I saw it fly down stream and disappear behind a huge boulder. I slipped along the banks and as I came out from behind the boulder I saw a Green Heron perched on a rock in the edge of the river. It looked small, and showed mostly a dark bluish green—but when he flew the wing-spread was much greater and there was much bright cinnamon visible. July 5. About 7 a.m. I noticed two large birds that flew down from the roof to the path north of the cottage. They were two Brown Torches— the first time I have seen two in the garden.
