Oct. 1. J.T.A. heard a Br. Th. whistling early a.m.
Byq. Nuthatches 20 (1 fl.) + others. Chick. Creeper,
Song Efr., juncoes. Sp. Torr. (2 ad. + 1 yq - molt almost
complete) Br. Torr. (pr.) High fog until 11 a.m.
Santa Cruz p.m. Birds very abt., Recapt. Clm. rocks,
wave washed in brown kelp. 35 Br. Ternstones, 2 Sand-
ling, 11 Willet. (At Long Beach - 200 + Sanderling, 10+
Willet, a few Ternstones, 10+ Willets. (Br. Pelican,
many Gulls, W., Heerman (gray heads), several Surf
Scoters on water (full fed.)
The Tattler was at
the base of a cliff covered with barnacles (?) at the
edge of the surf on wet sand. The Brown Pelican
was resting.
Oct. 2. Colder last night. Beautiful day - Birds near cottage:
Creeper, Chickadees, Redstarts, pr. Brown Towhees, 2 ad., Spotted Towhees,
one imm - most practically complete. Male Br. Towhee still
drives every thing off feeding table. All 5 Towhees eating
lunch at table about 7 p.m. 1 Hutton Vireo aq. Second culprit very wheezy.
Oct. 3. Cold last night. Clear sunny day. Heard a Ruby-cv. Kinglet
and a not [illegible] robin. Juncoes near table - first time. At dusk a
G.c. Sparrow, eating coffee berries near east porch. (Lugel59
