4 found on spruce at Salomons, N.Y. Aug 15 '65. Resting on upper and lower surface of twigs - extended. A very difficult larva to describe with definitives General color a rusty brown varying to almost black and white in two younger ones. A median dorsal whitish often tinged with rusty, line, expanded between legs and contracted in their middle portion when it passes between, but with set. tubercles bearing black and brownish hairs of various length (a little posterior and external (8 dorsal) & these another comma like larger tubercle is situated bearing somewhat longer these tubercles above occurring on the last and 2nd segments. The first mentioned not being absent except for a minute set tubercle in cost portion 2. S.1. The S.D. tubercles of 1 bear short stiff white hack penil tufts and those on 2,3 are longer than the other posterior ones except those on 4 and 11 while bear pencils similar to 1 but longer (nearly twice not quite) about 2 mm. Another round tubercle just above each spiracle also a smaller one just behind and a smaller behind. The 3 half encircling the spiracles. Lastly one at base of each leg. The region about the spiracules is tungent and its just brown in color gives it a green color to the larva - the two younger ones this region was almost black. The tubercles only bring darks clustered to a stem that had wholly interrupted by the wart region formed by a series of somewhat crescent shaped markings cream colored arising just below each spiracle running out Sup. Torest but 24. These onto whit it runs out inf. This creamy mark 5 broadly edged S. black with all it and the cream colored spiral which it partly encircles, contrast. Broad and S.D. intensity, narrow struck darkly together mostly with blackish and dirty white. Below dull brownish with blackish transverse marks. Legs light brown S. blackish patte at base. Agrotis (Eurvis) astrata Mw. Eggs laid Aug. 15'. Salomirian N.F. Hatched Aug. 24. Egg 22. flattened, Surface broken by ridges (about 34 many distinct at slight diagonal white lines from inner reticulated ridges about apex formed by thickening a little of Egg - egg, which also connects the above mentioned ridges. First stage. Liquid with green refl. from intestinal contents - A number of clear black (rather large) tubercles w. each a black curved hair. Then are 2 and dorsal the posterior slightly exterior (2) a cup. stigma - just above each spiracle. 3/4 a stigmata just por- Each spiracle, 1/4 sub. Lat., curved below each spiracle Or 2-3 then one forms a row of dots the upper sub-indian dorsal running down and forward to stigmata. with a larger tubercle inside. Below and post to this at base of each proleg. On 1 The brownish fringed plate contains four on either side with a row of lines running from 1 pair of prolegs from its post margin the middle of these ant. spiracle and ant. Vt. Other two - On 5-3 on either side, the median ventral line arranged in D the base part and the other tubercle much the largest. On 4 are 2 con't to post 2 of Vt's. Prolegs light-brown yellowish - brown ringed or partly ringed with black & w. few short hairs. Head with w. few black dots, many short hairs. Two ant. pairs of legs not- functional. 2nd stage. Color red brown, a dorsal and S.D. white streaks the Celtic with an indistinct line just below it. A broad creamy Calamal band. Suboral. whitish ringed. Beneath green & brown flecks. Head tinged w. yellowish. 3rd Stage Lep. 3. Much as before Vt's and brown hairier. Dorsal parts lightly ad- redder than rest with some nothing and distinct black dots (tubercles). Lateral red hairiness in same color. Under parts, Tiffined w. red. Head brownish w. black vts. 1.8 cm
