Cavalier 1967 Journal San Jose, Costa Rica July 20. Left Guanacaste City for San Jose... (Pan Am) 2 changes of planes, heat, four hours late. Fog over San Jose airport. Finally landed after 20 minutes circling. Many planes have to go to Panama City because of fog. The ride by taxi to San Jose is $5.00 but friends met me. Hotel Boston is inexpensive & very accommodating place to stay. It is necessary to say Pension Boston not Hotel otherwise no one knows where it is. Met Mercedes McDermid July 21. The truck (camper) we had planned to take was impossible because if the owner of any vehicle leaves the country he must have proof or else vehicle impounded. He returns in a week so we are going to shop today & take train to Limon Prov. tomorrow. July 22. Took Northern Railroad from Northern Railroad Station (there are two stations in San Jose) to Los Diamantes Farm. We changed trains at La Serena. It was necessary to ask conductor to stop at the farm for us. We left San Jose at about 1:45 and arrived at the farm at about 8:15 PM. The arrangement to stay at the experimental farm were made by Mercedes McDermid - check her notes for details. Los Diamantes Farm 1 mi SE Sarchi, Limon Prov. Costa Rica 300 meters July 23 Up at dawn - breakfast supposed to be from 5 & 6:30 but it was late as is almost everything a little. Walked east along road behind farm. C.CAVALLIER 1967 2 Journal Los Diamantes Farm, km 55 Guapiles, Limon Prov. Costa Rica July 23 cont'd beautiful plants, shrubs, trees & flowers. Saw many black vultures, motmots (10+), parrots in groups, grooved billed anis, and hummingers. Shot at a black vulture w/ #9 but it didn't phase him. There were many in various frow. The tallest (dead) tree had seven's and the next tallest tree have four or five (?) Those trees were on the edge of subbetree grove where it boarded the forest area. There were five rubber trees which had one vulture stuck in them. One shot and they all flew away. Returned approx 10 min. later there were in same two large dead trees. The rubber tree grove had less green growth (~2 1/2'-3') which is difficult by inexperienced birders. I know this from having last 2 finds in it similar growth further up the road. Shot grooved billed ani w/ half load - sitting on tree over hanging road. In rubber grove closer to farm (10min.) shot woodcreeper (#18) who appeared to be mating in a rubbertree. Then shot flycatchers (#17) about 3yds away - along edge of forest & subertree. Shot another ani (on fence post) on way home. The hummingbirds were always alone, the anis were few with another or 2-3 other ani fids. The motmots were all together approx 10-12 + and fly away together. E. Cavaler 1967 3. Journal forest w/p Rio Torro (maine Budge, 4 mi w. Guaples, Limon, Pao) costanza July 24 Up at 600 at Los Diamante's Farm. Got ride i jeep to above location. Went through town (2-3 blocks) then turned west. Drove 4mi on just 4 rocks road. Passed a few isolated houses, horses, chickens & people. From the very new (steel concrete) bridge we walked up the hill to the forest. Much water in paths & several streams (one large). Found very heavy forest which we couldn't enter. Men who was cutting trees showed me across and made a path. We entered through into clear area in a forest & got three birds: #__, #__,and #__ The #3_ + are in Mercedes McDiarmid's Catalog. The third is my mine (#30) Since I had no machete, went with the man who shaved us the path. The path had thick forest on both sides of it & was difficult to enter. Up about 1/2 a mile I saw and shot two woodpeckers from a tree about 50ft high. The first one I looked for for about 20 minutes, the second got stuck in crotch of tree. Collected flybird (#25) in dense forest. Much to my surprise he dried on the dead bone. He was on the ground in some foggy leaves. Claracler 1967 4 Journal farrest W of Rio Tarso @ Maria Bridge, 4 mi to Huapiles Limon Prov Costa Rica cont. July 24th They all had blue (play) eye rings. #26 was shot at edge of farrest. #27, #28 x #29 were shot along the road on the way to the farm. There were only two showers when we were back. Arrived at farm about 3:20. We expected to have collected much more than we did, but the forest was quiet. Saw about 12 black vultures in tree = 60 just above the fairly dense forest. The tree was free of leaves. Some rain afternoon. Las Diamantas, Ferin 1 mi S.E. Huapiles, Junior Prov, Costa Rica July 25 Walking East toward where Mercedes & I had decided to put up the mist nets, we saw very little activity. As usual the flocks of parrots, groved lilies (nice), seed ratas, oropendola, and on occasions it is difficult to tell the sounds of insects and frogs from the sounds of birds. We put the nets x(28 them) in cut over primary forest. The forest was dense enough to shield us from the rain. Mercedes & I hunted separately as usual. Since I am still w/o machete I went to the grassy areas (the orchards bordered by forest). Shot a parrot who was only a flash getting in a tree by the road. (Beautiful!). In an orchard of trees (like palm trees but short x with little trunk) I shot a Great Kiskin. Spent 45 minutes hunting the bird that was talking to it when I shot it. (mate)

L. Cavaleir 1967 5 journal Los Diamantes Farm 1 mi SE Guapilo, Limon Prov. Costa Rica July 25 cont. Then the rain came. There is no doubt about it's being the rainy season. Arthur broke to shot in adjacent field - couldn't find its mate. These birds are quite common. Shot another parrot in flock. Very difficult to kill. I only wound it & had to chase it all over grass about 6 feet tall. He used his tail for protection I used it efficiently & frequently. #31 was shot on top of high grass. It promptly fell into a river stream couldn't see. He was close. #35 ad#37 not.#38 were caught in the mist also missed. Many insects are biting me especially by the mad nets. I have yet to see dragonfly mot mot again) Shot a red rumped tanagers but couldn't find it in the grassy fields. Bought machetes (22 colones) when we went to town. Should have mentioned that the parrot that was difficult to kill was one of two shot & downed with on half load. The other I couldn't find. Won't reliving & saw now. Mercedes shot a Palique who was feeding on road with companion. They fled up then or ground again. Saw my first Dendrobates No more snakes observed.

C. Cavalen 1967 journal Les Clemento Farm lmi s.z. Guapila, Limon Prov. Cartagin July 26th to the mus net first thing on the way shot a #47 and a #42. The was in a tree + fell into a stream. The water really didn't make a difference because we had another day of hard rain. The #42 was feeding aw the ground when I shot him (on road). Shot by the # 46 was an experience. It was dusk & I saw several in tree. As I approach + one flew away. I saw one remaining & shot at it. About 60 more flew in the same direction as the first group. The three netted birds were July 27 to other nets - on the way I shot #47. He was sitting a little brush that was slightly higher than the ~ 6 ft grass around it. This is typical. Usually in bushes close to grassy area + close to ground. The #48 were again all over the place. They are in trees up to about 20 feet. Haven't seen them much higher. Many of them in pairs. C. Cavolin 1967 Journal July 29th Les Diamontes Farm, Limon Prov. Costa Rica siding. About 5 minutes later I saw a w In the same grove + 50 trees. It was very difficult to hit. I had to squeeze him for about 3-4 minutes. Shot a hummer but was unable to get it out of the tree. (tree kind?) feeds hummers. The first net was empty & the second had only one hummer. (Mercedes One Diamond's catalog) We saw some sort of water bird (almost duck size) along the San Carlos River. Couldn't get it. Still no rain today, only fog, but lots of it. On way back in rubber tree grove shot #51. He was about 30 feet up in tree. About dusk there seems to be more activity than in the morning. Finally just after sun set we saw fates (night hawks) feeding on the road. Their red eye shine helped me to see them. Shot only one. It was good not to be drenched today from the rain. (up to knees in crab try to get #77 block all the way- tomorrow may have sun. Some blue sky is showing. Insects as usual are plentyful. Some men collecting insects brought us some baby rabbits # 53,54,55 one skin, one alcoholic, one skeleton.

C. Cavalin 1967 Journal Los Diamantes Farm, I miss Guapiles, Limon Prov. Costa Rica July 28 Behind is spinning so I didn't hunt this morning. Mercedes hunted & opened the nets. 5/05HKEE. Hunted in the afternoon & did poorly. We left the net open for bats. During the day we got only two #56. shot #57 from the leafy top part of rubber tree. Shot last a hummer & a huge brown bird with tail fards. Should like to note here that the Los Diamantes Farm accommodations are fantastic. Good food, lots of room & independence. $15 colones/day in the afternoon it rained very hard. July 29 On the way to the nets (one of which we left open for bats) I shot a creeper from a small patch of rubber trees where I previously shot a creeper & a wood pecker. Also from the rubber grove across the road I shot a dove #60. He was one of about 12 doves in the tree. Shot two hummers & lost them in the grass (both from the same tree) The fern is thriving at least. On a fence was #59 who I shot. There are many of these & grasses on fence wire & pools. C.Carola 1967 Journal 15 mi S. Cariblanco, Heredia Prov. Costa Rica August 2 Hunted toward the river (down hill). We saw many more birds than we could have shot because on the north side of the road is an incline that it was impossible to descend and on the south side is a hill that is impossible to scale. She #67 was in a branch 25 ft up over the road. The #71 was about one foot off the ground in some brush beside the road. She was another bird but I just couldn't find it. This bird and the nest were shot on the north side of the Rio Sarapiqui up the hill about a mile in the forest about 3yds off the road was #70. She stayed in dense leaves for about 5 min and then emerged just long enough for me to pull the trigger. No sooner did I have her than #72 perched over head. He was still for 2-3 minutes and hopped about from branch to branch. When I got far enough away to shoot him he hid for a while, etc etc. About 15 min later & got them. Saw 2 woodpeckers on tree 60 feet high. Didn't get to them in time. The entire hour or so I hunted this spot a vulture was playing in the sky. The #69 and the Xunopsi mounted #68

L. Cavallaro 1967 Journal 11 (Cont) August 2 1.5 mi S. Cariblanco, Heredia Prov. Costa Rica were shot just a few feet from the road. I am now using the "half birds" I had made in San Jose. The shot size is #6 or larger & blocks the birds all apart. But since I could get nothing else made, its better than nothing. Alternate rain & sun, Clouds & fog in the morning. On the way back I caught the little frog in a puddle on the catapilla road 1/2 one city block up from the Rio. We saw a tree full of small birds (1-3?) but the forest was too dense to get to them. Skinned all afternoon). August 3 For me a very bad day. Got only one little bird. In the morning. Put him up & went out again but got nothing but wet. Raining almost all day. We set up a mist net beside the road where we had seen alot of bird activity. Caught a land crab in the grass. She # 74 was one of 10 birds feeding on a tree with fruits about this size. Even tho I shot at the tree the birds rapidly returned to feed. We saw (now) the hedge where we couldn't shoot) two jays (beautiful blue) and a woodpecker & many smaller birds.

C. Sacrab 1967 Journal 12 1.5 mi S Cariblanco, Heredia Prov, Costa Rica. August 4 Fled to the bat nets & found we had two bats. (#80) This net was set parallel to the road with sprays & a cleft on the other side. There is evidence of two places where bats had probably chewed their way out. Went down the road again today. Shot two jays (#75 + #82). They were two of about 7 jays feeding in top leaves of tree. Shot #78 as he(?) was feeding with a large (15-20) flocking similar (same?) little birds. After I crossed the river I ran into two more feeding flocks. I think there were several species in each flock. The flocks moved from tree to tree as they fed. #76 & #77 were shot from these flocks. The #81 bird was quite bold & came directly across the road from me. Not knowing he was a delicate bird I shot him with one of the Costa Rican shells I had made. There was hardly anything left to skin - feathers all over the place. The shells are entirely too powerful for anything less than a turkey vulture to fly at. Best its better than nothing.

C. Cardillo 1967 Journal 13. August 4 (p.m.) Lami's Cariblanco, Heredia Prov. Costa Rica On the way back to the camper the daily prolonged rain started & the birds hid from the rain (& me). During the day while I was skinning I heard little sheeps. I went to check our nets & saw #79 looks as if she fell to the ground. When she came out from under the leaves I shot her. Very often one sees two or three birds flying about very rapidly, darting here & there - seldom landing. Just three traps by the truck but the rain snapped them all while I was skinning the bat. It rained as usual long & hard. All three traps had shifted from their original position. The measurements on the bat are forearm & the . During the night (1:30 A.M.) we checked the net (empty) & we saw no snakes. The next morning then we have planned to awaken earlier. August 5 The net was down & had no bats. C. Ruckles 1967 Journal 14 August 5 (cont.) 1.5 mi S. Carabanza, Heredia Prov. Costa Rica Again shot a #89 in a group of 6-7 jays in tree tops. They were not so shy that they didn't return after a few were shot. Curtis does the road in a low shrub & alone was #83 crossed the bridge. Across the bridge & up the other side we found a small group of (5-6) #90 Finally we came to a open grassy area. There were 3-4 horses & chickens & donkey. We climbed up & roamed around for a few hours. There were 4 houses & a corn patch. #85 & #86 flew in a tree & many smaller birds. I am not certain they are a pair. C. Cucklin 1967 Journal 18 Augus & I have caught two mice in the exact same spot. The other mouse was also caught in trap under logs. #113 was dead & without feet (ant whole #114 was covered 1/2 partly eaten by ants). Not only 13 traps because of so little place to set them! No mice we could catch in the grassy areas. Even so I set traps in the grass again tonight at also by the logs. Set some in high bushy (3 feet) areas with little grass but looked like runways. Again covered them with leaves so rain wouldn't get them off. Saw ± 6 frogs one, 3 toads and a flock of parrots (± 8?). They were all over the cliff & would be impossible to get at/shot. The #112 was gone & the ± 6 flying over the road. They are trying to take down put up. The #115 shot in the pouring rain on way back to campus. It rained on's of this noon & occasionally in the afternoon but not a large quantity. The #115 was one of 3 little birds in a tree ± 4 feet tall. In the net we got #117. #116 . He was attacked by the birds w the net so we must check.

C. Cavellin 1967 Journal /9 15 mi s Caiblanco, Heredia Prov. Costa Rica 2800 Aug 8 It frequently. We set insect light up at 8:00 Unknown to me & absolutely frantic. August 9 Up to dark clouds & possible rain. We had 2 bats in the net # 119 The 13 mouse traps set were dangerous. I got only one mouse. This time w the high breast BUT by a beard - like the other mice I caught. She was very floatal besides lactating. I was certain she was almost ready to give birth but she was simply floatal with aid. I should mention here that having spoken with several people regards what measurements to take on bats they have had several answers. So I take the usual four manual measurement plus the forearm followed by the 1 (in that order). I think its better to have too many than to few measurements. While bething the downstream came ashore after + 10:30 p.m. we left for San Jose. We drove most of the way up Volcan Poas (July 15th off July 9) which is in Alajuela Prov. There was not an over abundance of places to pull & the road & hums. Either they were free & near or too near the road & we were afraid someone might hit the steels. The

C. Ceeley 1967 Journal 20 August 9 15mi's Cariblanco, Heredia Prov., Costa Rica drivers here are amazing!!! We chose back to San Jose to get the Cotton & MVZ tags, Customs did a few hours hassle & we had to return early the next day for the package. They wanted us & I to pay duty however we persuaded them not to charge us more than $35? The air mail took days. The road to Cariblanco was muddy & full of holes best on each side it had perhaps the heaviest forest around. Much of the trees had been cut for as far as we could see on the way to San Jose. Volcano Poas caught us in one of his detches but 4 wheel drive got closer. There was much less fog than there usually is there. One could see the plateau. It was cool enough for a sweater. August 10. Left the Hotel Baston early for customs, bought a suntan case for bride, & left for Alajuela to get to Volcano at noon us 4 1/2 hours which includes lunch. (Now supposed to be excellent time). C. Cardale 1967 Journal 21. August 20 Fina & Jimmy, Guanacaste Prov. Costa Rica very warm. Quite a change from the deep & rain we've had elsewhere. We unpacked & then drove out to Las Cañas to mail letters. We saw cattle eggb, anies, curassows, magpie jays, juncos (sides), seed eaters, lots of cattle (emu) on the road, many speeding landrovers, muchos large iguana & iguana equana. I've seen them in the museum but never alive. I could hardly believe my eyes. They were all over the place. One flew past, in frees; on the road! The turkeys black vultures are plentiful as are the mosquitoes! Nearby they saw an ocel who sounded like a dog barking. It gets dark about 6PM & there is electricity on in the dining room only so skinny clothes on the bed. August 21 Woke up to the cries of howler monkeys. Sounded as if they were directly out the window however they were up the hill behind the house. Such a racket. The first time I have heard them. Amazing. C. Paulus 1967 Journal 22 August 11 (cop) Finca G money, Guanacaste Prov., Costa Rica down to the Rio Segueron which runs through the Finca. (+ 's mi) The first bird I shot was a hawk which I gave to Mercedes for her birthday. She has wanted one for sometime. Began to feel more & more dizzy. Observed a group of 7 black vultures & one (white torch) in a dead tree in the middle of the marshy area. Also saw a night heron who stood for sometime on a dead turned over stump. Even though I wasa shot away from the truck I thought I'd never make it back. Left Mercedes a note & started to walk back to the little house. C. Carvelin 1967 Journal 23 Tunco Jerninez, Guanacaste Prov, Costa Rica August 11 shot on the road to the cabin he was slow was making little short runs along the dirt & rocks! By this time I could think of nothing but getting back to the house. A pity because there are many birds here. Skinned w the afternoon. Felt a little tilly. Set 15 mouse traps & was nearly made a skeleton & by the mosquitoes. Saw 3 turkey vultures directly over head while setting traps. Sleep bird. Parrots in flocks were frequent sounds or sights. C. Cavelow 1967 Journal 24 Vomi St. Fina geminey, Guanacaste, Costa Rica August 1/2 I wouldn't find him. Great disappointment. From a +/- 60 foot dead butt # shot # 128 Her mate which was close to her when I shot her came flying at me & squacked loudly. I did the obvious - shot him w/ a 22 because he was so near. About 100 from the river is a junk field tree # shot # 130 I was feeding & very flighty. I walked to the river & noticed that just every thing was. Looked up in the trees & for about about 8-10 monkeys. (Lesson: don't stand under a tree full of monkeys.) So I started to put my hand on what looked like (from the palms of my eyes) a large tree trunk it moved!! A huge huge Squana. Very startled. Then to my utter amazement I saw about a dozen leguins scamper across the river ON the water. They actually ran on the top of the water. For about 1 hour of this mornings hunting I felt extremely dry but have felt better the rest of the day. C Carolen 1967 Journal 29 Finca Jemeney, Guanacaste Prov. Costa Rica August 18 sleep up. (slight degree) Didn't year oong. The two woodpeckers #168 + 170 shot from same tree. Large dead (but many small branches) tree #168 at 8:05 x 9:30 PM The parrot also was shot from this tree at 9 AM The reason for this tree's being popular is that I got to dizzy walking any further. I'm feeling better today though. The 171 was in a leaf tree, guy from branch to branch very fast! dove hunting of 5 Barn Swols 4 Streech, 1 Virginia Opeaen. [illegible] The partridges were plentiful Collected one barn. They are hard to kill. I shot it worth. those shells had made here and it wasn't dead when I found it. The mouse traps are around a rocky area tonight. Set only 10 - Rain light August 19 Feeling better at last. No mice in the traps. Can't understand why I haven't caught any. We went to the river today. Mercedes & I hunted together today for the first time. Shot #173 from a tall limb at 60 feet up. He was about 10 feet from the river. C. Caveler 1967 Journal 30 mi S.E Finca Jimenez, Guanacaste Prov. Costa Rica August 19 was in a flashy (+ 6 foot) tree feeding. The monkey was in a group of +8 other monkeys. She got stuck in the tree + I expected a reaction when I from her "family" when I shot her blowgun, but not a sound as action. The #176 was in the nest. When I peeked up the owl from last night (#172) I found in his stomach only grasshoppers remain. Night hunting saw in mi - 28 parague, 4 barn owls Costa Rica Playas del Coco + Finca Jimenez Guanacaste Prov. August 20 Rain light in the morning. Heavy overcast left for Playas del Coco at 10 a.m. Saw sparrows, many anies, cattle egrets, vultures (NO) Only one hawk, did lunch at the beach & sat in the sun. Watched the three brown pelican dive very warm water - light overcast but we got a little red. Came home packed. Tomorrow we leave. San Jose, San Jose Prov. Costa Rica August 21 drove to San Jose after last minute packing leaving Finca Jimenez we finally saw the bob white which we had heard calling most of us stay there. P. (unclear) 1967 Journal. 3, 2670 Hotel Boston, San Jose, San Jose Prio. Costa Rica August 21 we came just outside San Jose. Heavy Rain Packed some birds to mail. For mailing details see Mercedes One Dearmids' notes. (permits for import, export, collecting etc.) August 22 Since I didn't have a collecting permit we decided not to ship anything in my name. They asked for collecting permit. August 25 Villa Milla 5.1 mi SE Cerro de la muerte, Cartago Prov. August 25 In clear weather we left San Jose at *9 AM, took Pan American Hwy 2 through Cartago on to Cerro de la Muerte. The drive took about 2 1/2-3 hours. We had rain & some cold as we neared the summit. Heavy rain in the afternoon. Finally @ 4 1/5 it stopped raining. Cold outside but OK in the 31. traps anyway - Expected rain the entire time but it stayed clear. After the traps I shot a #177. It was too dark to skin. August 26 got 2 mice - one at base of tree other under pile of thin sticks & new brush. Used peanut butter for bait. Clear morning, cool but not cold. Shot #5 178, 179, 180, & 181 too ( ) each from a group of the same feeding w/ trees. None were Solitary. # 183, 184, 185 spend time hopping on the ground as well as climbing in trees. C. Caveler 1967 journal 32 (cont) Villa Mills 5:1 miss Jurode la muerte, castag... in a tree & August 26 was with another was eating purple berries. # 188 was feeding hopping on the ground. The # 189 was feeding from a white flower which grows close to the ground. The # 190 was about to land on a branch when I shot him. Used a half load because I was afraid wouldn't hit him. Other than that I have been using 22's on everything. The birds are very tame here. I think I will have no problem with 22 shells. I still have a couple of half loads. In a Orrell just I shot # 191 The # 182 # 186 were not eaten or covered with ants or insects as they were else where. The rain began about 1:30 and at 4:00 when I wanted to set traps it was a heavy downpour which stopped about 7:30 PM It is very very cold here. # Ray Mc Diarmid brought us some birds from & net I helped him & Dr. Peters Raven put up for bats. # 192 # 193 No mosquitoes or tiny insects. I hunted in the dense areas but they were more quiet than the slightly open areas. Bird greens & feell little puddles.

C. Cavalin 1967 Journal 33 Villa Millo 5.1 mi SE Seno de la Muerte, Puntagorda Prov. Costa Rica August 27 Clear morning until about noon when the fog came in. The afternoons are usually foggy now the nights. # 197 was feeding on the ground near a puddle of water. The # 194 was on brushy hill feeding on spotted grass covered ground. There were 3 or them together. The # 195 was apparently feeding from a flower with several hummingbirds on this same plant about 20 min. later shot # 198 & # 199 The # 196 was in a small tree 4-6 feet. It was leafy tree I think. Saw +/- 7 parrots fly over head. Later in the day one flew but I didn't see it land. Saw another equal but it looked as if it had a gray tail. Set traps: 10 with tuna fish & 20 with corn meal. The first 15 set in shrub & the second 15 in forest by logs & tree bases. Saw 3 or 4 sets but didn't shoot them. August 28 Clear again the morning & fog about noon. Valley is the warmest day we have had. The two mice # 200 & 201 were caught in the forest (none in the shrub) one in a dead tree.

C. Curleu 1967 Journal 34 August 25 Vale Millers mi 55 Sero de la puerta Costa Rica stump which was hollow like a tunnel & the second under a dead moss covered log. One #202 was feeding in large clear area I had 6 worms in its mouth. The second #203 was in a low shrub & wasn't feeding or mining. The #204 was feeding on clear ground surrounded by low shrubs. #205 + 206 frequently saw in leaves making little jumping back movements as if looking for food. They are often in cleared areas. #207 is very common. Shot her from a low tree. Warmer tonight. We stopped skinning early to go bat hunting. we walked a little over 6 mile & saw only one fox. By that time (dusk) last night we had seen several August 29 one mouse in the low brush (bets corn mat) Packed & drove to Hotel Boston. Saws only one field on the way. No rain today. It began to cloud up about noon on the Sero.

C. Caroline 1967 Journal 35 Aug 30 to Sept 10 San Jose, Prov. Costa Rica Packing, sightseeing & shopping. Found it is cheaper to eat out than at Hotel Boston ($1.00 per meal) but is usually ±$60. Bought some 22 shells for Panama ~$1.00 per set. With 2 OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies) students took train to Limon 12:15 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Stayed at Hotel Park (had no mice - pet traps) for $7.00. There are two expensive places. my favorite city - the Atlantic, docks, trains & many Colombians. Bought a turtle shell at a "factory" which plotters them for food. The shell was $$ 4.00 (too much - should have gotten it for less). Needed to be cleaned. Hotel didn't fuss when we brought it in. Returned by plane to San Jose after another day of sightseeing ($4.00) Bats on the roads by the ocean & we heard three little bats. Dried turtle shell (which will go to not museum) at the University w/the hot house. Didn't dry very well in 5 days. Sent it to the U.S. by plane (over weight) with a friend. Have no idea if it arrived (passed customs). It was packed two gunner each. Took bus to Panterana beach (alone) sun hot, rain afternoon. Hotel Imperial $2.00 per night. Bus was $1.45. Train was more. C. Barcelo 1967 Journal 36 August 30 San Jose, Cost. Costa Rica safe for alone if she travels during the day. Rain was a night & a little discomfort walking from station to hotel. Take the other train not the one to Limon. 2 stations. There's a airport bus for $30 instead of $5.00. Red hotels. V.I., towels. All conveniences home & anything I didn't use collecting in Costa Rica, . She overweight on plane! September 10 Left Costa Rica by TACA just on a corporate plane (I left earlier) & wanted time in Panama to try to get to Guariza that day. Flight + 45 min. September Panama City, Panama Prov., Republic of Arrived 1:30 Was told the flight to Guariza was cancelled because the area was quarantined. But since & the plane for Guariza, Dario Prov. left from Paitilla airport (not International) called & made reservations for next plane. (6:24 Sept 11th) In order to get colectivo $1.50 mb twice (instead of fare $5.00) had to wait for an hour. To Hotel Ideal. $4.00 pm night - there are rooms for $2.50 but have to get there early in the morning. Telephones are very difficult to use. It's hot & humid.

C. Parelius 1967 Journal 37 Panama City, Panama Prov. Rep. of Panama. September 11. Left hotel 5:00 AM (dark) by taxi ($1.00) for Paitilla airport. One way ticket $10.50. plus $5.00 for overweight. (I carried most of the heavy stuff so they didn't weigh it.) Well, of us got in the 6 passenger plane & if we went into the clouds & rain. I flew the plane part way envever though I wound the back out) because the pilot pilot was doing his fingernails & the plane kept turning left till he would lose rep & straighten it out. We flew low enough to see birds but didn't because I spent most of the time worry that the wheels would come off the airplane from the trees we go almost hit. Into fog part of the way. Saw a clear area. Looked like tons of swamp & dense forest. Can't imagine how to collect tree. We dropped off the other passengers at La Palma. While waiting for the plane to leave again, suddenly realized I was now the only ? & the only white. A moment of concern, but the land & water was just so pretty to care. Beautiful trees w/ orange blossoms. The pilot & his one passenger (me) took off for gaviya. I wish he had paid more attention to his plane & less attention to me. He just couldn't understand what I was doing here.

C. Cavallu 1967 Journal 38 cont. September 11 Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep. de Panama At that moment I was having trouble understanding what I was doing here too because directly below were two crashed airplanes & a landing strip which I couldn't tell from the forest!! Well, the mud wasn't quite as deep as though I didn't hit any of the trees. (I have a pilot's license & am not usually too afraid, however I usually don't try to top trees with airplane wings) Got out of the plane, conversed with pilot for a few minutes & he went. Since there was no sign or people around I really certain Yaviza in Yaviza. Walked to the river a few feet away & tried to wave down a boat. The people were friendly.... they waved back. Finally (1 1/2 hrs. later) I got 3 men to understand I wanted to go across the river to what I guessed was Yaviza. The three of us all the luggage (mostly collecty stuff) got in dug out canoes & went across down river. The banks are steep slippery. They hadn't heard of my friend by name but did know of one Gringo (white non-Spanish speaking) who lived down town with a dug out canoe called the "Pink Panther". C. Barcelin 1967 Journal 39 Yaviza, Darian Prov. Rep. de Panama. September'11 what I would find. The door opened slowly on an unshaven & somewhat surprised Gringo as last had arrived.'' By the end of the afternoon I had heard of the two murders next door last week (they heard got it with a machete) and 5 various others. choppings. But gringos are safe sleep, my friend Pitul. Stay with a Panamanian family next door to Pitul's house. I am glad by the way that it is dark in their house at dinner time because it may take me to few day to get used to the food. The charge is $25 a meal - lots of nice, some meat. At night one sleeps under a mosquito net to keep the bats away. Warm, no rain, sunset, music trickle at night & lots of noise. September12 Everyone up @ 6.30 There are 43 little chickens living in the kitchen. It's amazing what one can get used to. Went down river to El Real (Mr. with motor.) Saw the following along the shores: tropic (cormorants, common egret, little blue heron, Snowy egrets, white necked heron, great blue head?), black & turkey vultures , green heron, wood side hawks (Buteo meginothia), white necked crake, yellow crowned night heron,

Rep. de Panama jacans, spotted sand piper (x yps pigeons), blue ground dove, ruddy ground doves, swifts (? don't know which) hummers, ruffs tailed hermit, linnaeus woodpecker, laughing falcon, capped heron, (heard a macaw (blue & gold we think)) saw rewsty margim, barn swallow, rough winged swallows, mangrove swallows, martins (gray headed?), Anis smooth billed Ani, greatw Ani, Ora pendula, yellow-tacked tanager, blue-gray tanager, yellow backed oriole, keel billed toucan, blue black guac quetz. ON the river about 3 hours. When we arrived in town we were asked if we had seen the body floaty down the river. Nope, too busy looking at birds. The men got a with a machete too. They haven't found the murder yet. Got some chickw feed, check out possible most red digits, had lunch with very nice family, headed back up river in slight drizzle. (Walked around town) & talked with many of Peter's friends. Dinner was good. Boy brought #209. I paid 15$ for it.. C Cavalleri 1967 Journal 4/1 Sept. 3 Yaviza, Darian Prov. Rep de Panama. Today we looked a little up river for net eghts & visited the Interoenos who are starting planting things other than rice. Very hot! On trail saw rusty margin flycatchers, blue gray tanagers, yellow rumped tanagers, Crimson backed tanagers, grass quits, one not, huge flying beetles, little brown flycatches (?) (heard teremous), and ruddy ground doves. The #211 was flopping on ground some coeght him. A friend of Peter's (a native) broeght a snake#210. A young hunter brought a motmot which I paid $ 5 for. It's alive so I'll wait to skin it because Iwant to looks around some more. There's I'll stay about a month I will have to go to Panama city soon for more formalin & containers. I want to wait a few more days before oslars collecting so I'll know my way around better). Peter & I are the only two white people in town. Rio Pirre, 1.7Km SW of Real, Darian Prov. Panama Sept. 14. About 9:00 a young hunter brought a #220. Paid 10$ for it. C. Cleveland 1967 Journal 42 Sept 14. Rio Pirre, . 4 Km S.W. El Real, Darien Prov. Panama Guater ani, white necked thrush, snowy egrets. Going down the river we saw a man throw an almost dead snake into the river. We raced can & got it #219. Lunch with Bob & Janet for Peace Corps in El Real. They had a 32 so we all went hunting - They for birds for their scat & me for MVZ. We shot #207 on limb &w the meter, he was alone. He had and many broken fish-bones. #218 was silly on limb alone too. On a rock beach we left the boat & collected a couple (10) of crabs #213 They ran to their holes when we got about 7 feet away. We (Pete) caught them w/ a stick with which he blocked the hole so the crab couldn't enter. #214 & #215 were shot from tree 60 up. The #216 shot from same tree about the same height up. The parrots I'm told like the fruit of the same tree. We all sat on the beach for a while & talked. We came for a vesit & ended with 5 birds & a snake. Helen & knew they had a 32. Shot several times at a Amazon & ringed king fisher but couldn't get one. Both Bob & Janet and Pete Slater have netted birds fine so I well

C. Caeelew 1967 Journal 4/3 Ponana Sept 14 Rio Pirri, .4 Km S.W. El Real, Darien Pico get advice from them & hope. Skinned the two parrots & the tocoran, gave also meat to the fishes for their acclty & head of back to gavinjal 5.45 I was able to see some birds from the fishes. got 60. I got to drive the "Pink Panther" home (with direction from Pete who knows steven) all night must be extra careful objects in the water. Saw one large hat (?) and several smaller ones.. Saw rapped herons just outside El Real. Arrived to gavinja after day, had dinner, fried snakes, birds & went to sleep - very tired. Sept. 15 Biscuit bread, moved the 43 chickens out of the kitchen I set up a skering place (in the kitchen) Today we skinned & prepared the birds we got yesterday. We had 10 little hunters bring us days ago. Paid them $1 for 2. They took a while getting them but we still got quite a few. They we all caught in town on the benches & trees. The #247 was from yavinja on the edge of town. Spent some time trying to organize a space to put everything. Tonight 3 Indians came to visit (plus the usual crowd of kids from gavinja). O. Caroline 1967 Journal 44 Gavija, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama cont. d. Sept 15th Children will - malnutrition. Another's women's sick kids are still up nice - being "cured" by a witch doctor. A few of the Indians speak Spanish, the others Choco, this native tongue (also speak Imbera dialect.) #247 stomach content: fish 59mm, 70mm, 49mm, 59mm, 69mm, 50mm, 40mm, 30mm, 40mm, 59m, 30m. 1 dragon fly, 1 Belastomidae 40 mm, 1 long thin fish more than 100mm (part missing), plenty from red crab, grasshoppers. The fish the Indians called fed as Guavina. Sept 16th Did some washing, cleaned "lab" a little then the little hunters started scampering all over town for lizards. An Indian caught two fish for me in the Rio Chucenaque which runs in front of town. A nice old here gave me another fish; #248 All the today's catch is from town The bat #266 was shot (with a sling shot) from the roof of a house. The other bats are from 5 Coco palm tree #267, 268, 269, 270, 271 + 273 -> #318 was by the river. Warm day. -> Some more Indians came to spend the night. A family w/ 3 kids. They are darling. C. Caroleus 1967 Journal 50 Sept 16th Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama The guests take time from collecting, but I'm a guest too & glad for a place to stay. Big noise in town - music told 2 [in] loud & clear - 3 live hands with wild dance. Safe to be out till the fights start @ 12-1 AM. Sept 17th Yet. Peter (Hattay) spent most of the day building a container [to put] the skeleton in. There are numerous flies. The # 32' which we had a cage died so made a skeleton. Very honey moth, # 322 was found in a Mance tree. He was mating freely, but much came off a wowing & skimming kind. # 333 I am told is common; He has 8 legs (I think), found in town. The # 334 had what looked like rockroach in it's stomach. (We are forcing them all over - even in the day they) run around the house.) The lizards again from food. We were brought a tiny baby Hummer which Peter has decided to raise. It eats sugar, water & vitamins. He(?) lives in a film slide box & is fed by a syring when I see he cried. Puts is also trying to feed, with not success, a pet viper (V). [Chognosed vipers?] # 322, After being skinned we put him in a box & section to close over night. C. Cavaley 1967 Journal 51 Sept. 17 Gavija, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama very good. Best night sleep since Costa Rica. Sept. 18 More lizards from "the little hunters". She #349 was shot while flying by the river by one of little guys. The other three 350, 351, 352 were shot from mango trees in the morning. We gained the snake skin from yesterday + 7½ feet - Elvas given #353 as a gift - caught in the river a yard or so away. The river is always brown & contains the sewage from Gavija. Set up two mist nets, one #1 (limited) in a grove over orchard (grass vegetals 1½2 feet.) Also here we set 2ß mouse traps & 2 gopher traps. The other mist net we set top of a hill (small) directly up from the river. Only a few trees - grass ½-1 foot. On the edge of the cemetery, on the small net we got a hummer #354 and #355 #356 from Gavija. #357 was caught by hand from a mango tree & the city about 6.30 PM. Peter & I left the nets up for two nights. At 8:30 PM we checked the nets. On net #1, we found #358 + #359 #360 (w/ #361) In net #2 was only #362. We were attacked by several million mosquitoes.

C.Caerler 1967 Journal 52 cont Sept 18th Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama #354 feet reddish flesh colored, upper mandible all black, lower mandible flesh becoming yellow x black the end third. Skinned till 1230 light fair to poor. It is difficult to get anything done because of the high number of visitors. Today there was a little rain about four, but we are having a relatively little rain for Yaviza this time of year. Sept 19th up at 530 to check the nets. In net #1 (over gruox orchard) we had #388 x 389 Ces0 #390 and #391 . The mouse traps were empty - most had bate stuck in them. The other net #2 is this o had 2 bats #392 x 393 also #394 v 395 One of the kids brought a a bat from his house #396 The nest #397 and the 2 eggs #398 are from a Ruddy ground dove. Nest was 31/2-4 feet from the ground in a tangled low shrub. The skeleton #399 is the same little species as #390. #400 , #401 , #402 , #403 were from net #1. These were collected about 3:30 Net #2 had #404 and 405 and 406 . #407 used

C. Pavelow 1967 Journal 53 Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama Sept 19th was brought to us by a "little hunter". The fish # 408 , # 409 , # 410 , # 411 and # 412 were caught from the foulth dirty creek which runs through town. It's really more of a (stream) than a creek. When the creek floods, thus we big fish which the people eat. Since I am collecting without permets & have no export or import permits Dr. Plowson suggested I do mostly alcoholics & skeletons. #413 was caught live in town in a palm tree. Should mention the reason I have no permets is that I didn't know I would be collecting in Panama until a few weeks before I left Costa Rica. Sept 20th At 6:30 a little knock on the door & in walks a # 441 Threw it to the nets: in net # 1 we got # 436 ## 439 , and # 440 . Net # 2 we got # 437 + 438 At the nets I began to feel ill & by the time we got back I was wretching like (in the morning) (also had extreme tourists). Sent next door for Peter – The snakes weren’t poisonous one wasn’t even a snake # 446 The snake # 445 he wanted $5.00 for but settled for a dime after much discussion. He thought he had risked his life. The afternoon nets brought in # 448 (skeleton) who is same as # 360. also #'s 449, 450 . # 451 # 452 The kids brought in follow sets: # 453, 454, 455 456 , from Coco Palms & ccccc Palms. # 457 came from paja not a hat in town. A family i town wants to sell a baby deer alive for $20.00. I told them I'd buy the head & hide for $1.00. No, I may get it get that. They sell alive, wait till they grow up, then eat them. Was wide tracked by some wild music (live) from a house a few city. Since i do not consider poor manners to stop in a doorway & stare, I did just that. (Along with about 20 other people.) Drums, accordion, & scratchy instrument. And could they sing. All very dark skinned. The fets #530-536 the kids brought in from the coconut-palms. #547 was by the river. More Indians spent the night. They were quite large so I decided MVZ wouldn't want them because they are domesticated. Sept 23 overcast, very warm, visit by some missionaries. Took down mist nets and cleared up "lab" and prepared for trip up river tomorrow. In net #1 we had #530 #553 , #554 #555 #561 In net #2 there were #549 and #552 The snake skin was in Yaviza #551 . The three little rabbits were found due west of Yaviza 2.5 miles. They are all three from the same litter. #556, #557 & #558 . The armadillo #559 in Yaviza too. The #560 found some place as rabbits. #562 , 563,564,566 in Yaviza. #565 & 567 also Yaviza #568,569,570 I think are from just out side the "city". Can't be certain of these. The kids say they bite. The #571 was here to Oweas #572. #573 ✔#574 were brought in by a little hunter). $5 each. Since 22 shrews had $5 each I decided it was a fair price.

The 20 runners are out side playing & singing. Their melody is very catching & they grin like crazy when they sing. They throw their heads back & really enjoy their sounds. Journal 59 Gueveja, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama Sept 24th to finish everything tomorrow. Still no rain. Definitely a nail shortage for this time of year. Sept 25th I finished everything from yesterday, made plans for a possible view from Dr Pearson or Ward Russell. Spent afternoon (late) seeing if arrangements would be made. # 59-1 from house in town. Small beer pain for about 15 minutes. Now we have a little more drinking water than we did. If we don't get anymore barrels we can go up river tomorrow or the next day. It makes a difference if one goes with the tide instead of against it. The trip from 4 to 6 hours depending on amount of current (how much) tidal watching. Relaxed in the afternoon a little. Sept 26th overcast, no rain, warm as usual. Wrote Dr Pearson about possibility of his & Ward Russell's coming. Have no idea of their possible response. With out knowing someone here, collecting would cost a fortune in time or money. It is necessary to have boat motor, someone who knows the river, the Indians of their ways. Pete Halety does not has been a fantastic help. For this reason I asked if the museum if they wanted to send someone down. A shame to waste

C. Cavall 1967 Journal Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama Sept 26 the opportunity, but I imagine it will be difficult on such short notice. Write Letters. #595 and #596 from port of Yaviza. #597 is from Rio Chico 1 Km due E to Yaviza. Paid 20¢ Picked up my river, got gas, bought supplies. We went up Rio Chico to look for mesquite pits. We bathed & did washing in the River. (the way the people there do) jump in with your clothes on & wash them at the same time. The fish bite of you stand still in the water. They attack with soap bubbles, diving flip the second they land. On the way back we stopped at the missionaries who have lived here for 5 years. They have banana trees behind their house & seeds we could not miss such trees for bath if we wanted. Belderemo Okio & Enfermedades (Chiron) and this two families were hosts. They had dinner for us & gave me a piece of rubber flower I had taken one of mine. We stayed till about 9& then headed home in the dark. Earlier that day Luis taught me how to use the motor & paddle & palanca. There are channels in the river some parts should be know well before being used by a boat with a motor.

C. Cavalier 1967 Journal Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama 61 Sept 27 The #598 & the #599 were bought to us by a little Runtux. One of Peter's Indian friends came to visit & guide. He was going up river we offered him a ride. While we were waiting for a snake someone wanted to sell. I took a flute like object off the wall & tried to play it. Could get no sound. I asked him he said that he had forgotten, but when he played I couldn't believe my ears. I'm almost certain it was a Bach flute. The snake never arrived so we left for the river. Then we got 3 more Indians who wanted a ride. The piragua was heavy because of all the baggage, people & another piragua which we had inside Peter's. About an hour up the river I spotted 2 little fat sticking up out of the water - Co dead #600 Put it in the front seat & sitting half way back we could hardly brace. Shortly after we dropped off the Indians & headed for halfway between mouthg Portuguese & No Baugti the still had a very bad odor. Lots of little farms on the way up. E. Carrelan 1967 Journal Catalogue 62 Rep de 4 Km N, 3.5 Km W of mouth Rio Luguesa, Darwin Prov, Parau Sept 27 I didn't notice. Ate the bread, valence cheese we brought and drank the water which we carry in chlorax (plastic) bottles. The river water is very brown. When we run out of creoles we will use the river with halazone. We arrived after having driven (full speed) for hours. We stopped at their farm, parked our 4x4 (because it has a motor) and six people drove up to their house. The banks are all muddy but they never get this just as dirty as the Gringos. Everyone goes bare foot - I have trouble getting used to it even though it looks cleaner soft. We skinned the and let it soak in the river so the fish would eat some of the meat. Since it was raining anyway (hard) we decided it would get dry very fast so we experimented. The houses (1 large room) are one-story and have no wells - just rods. They (we) sleep on wooden floors. There are 2 families live so there were 3 little tents & 2 mosquito nets. For some reason they laughed when we were putting them up. C. Cavalus 1967 Journal 23 Repe 4Km N, 3.5 Km Wg mouth Rio Yuguana, Darien Prov., Panama Sept 27th Smoked Curassow (guan) which they had killed a few days ago. Delicious & lots of it. The children are well behaved. (loos of them). One gal (about 14 or 15) was painted black Reason: she had just gotten married. They enjoyed our center. The two fets # 601 x 602 we caught with an insect net in the house. Peter one of the men tried to catch some of the begoes (with the net) who live under the house with the pig & chickens & dogs. No luck. They speak a little Spanish so the language wasn't too much of a problem. The rain came the first they've had in a while. I hope it's raining in Yaguana too because the drinking water was low when we left. Sept 28th The formaldehyde does smell as strong as I should be mad or staying longer as plans we will go back tomorrow & I'll go to Panama for supplies (I really hate to leave everything a few days) & then come back up to collect. C. Carolus 1967 Journal. 64 cont. Sep 28. 4km N, 3.5 km WQ mount Rio Higuera, Darian Prov., Panama to look around. When sun fell + 100 then rain in the afternoon. We found another #603. It too was dead & had an ailer. Breakfast & lunch were the same as dinner last night.. Heavy rain for a short hour in the afternoon. The Indians eat three big meals a day. After the rain we went down to the river to skin #603. We started down river after the rain in hopes of getting to the farm, we explored a little quebrada then the rain came. After dinner 2 Indians took us hunting. Walking barefoot to the pir eagua made me a little uneasy. The flash light wasn't as bright as I could have been. Up river about 20 minutes by motor we took a quebrada (chicharey). Here we didn't use the motor. The current was strong because the river is beginning to flood. We saw several tets & Basalives. C. Carrelen 1947 Journal 25 Rep 4 Sept 28th 4 Km N., 3.5Km W of mouth Rio Veragua, Darien Prov, Panama We stopped at a rocky bank to get rocks for sling shot. We saw no mammals or birds. The Indians went out first. The #606 Peter shot from about 100 feet. I couldn't even see it. Since it was about to rain, the clouds covered the moon/stars. The night was dark. Heavy trash/was strong current made us turn back for land. Heavy rain on way home - juices very cold. We shot a #5 foot He thrashed around (then walked). We gone about 3 hours. It was a very wet evening even though we didn't get much. #625 - not a nice field - must try again Sept 29th One Indian left the lab at 5:30 AM to hunt up game. He followed a tapir with a young all day but didn't get them. Peter gave the Indians some seeds & then we went down river to this farm. I took pictures for some time till an Indian had time to take us in the forest hunting. On Sept 11 (page 37) I wondered what it would be like & how it would be possible to hunt in all the swampy-like forest. O. Carvelius 1967 Journal 46 Sept 29 cont. 4 Km N. 3.5 Km NW, mouth Rio Yuguesa, Dairen Prov., Panama are long, this painful and hard to get out. We wore the Indian shoes - too big for me (causing blisters when squeezed) & too small for Peter. The water was from ankle to knee deep most of the time. The insects were bad only if one held still. We crossed several streams that were far enough away from the log we walked on to make me a little nervous but guide hardly broke his stride. Amazing people. The forest was dark. Several palm species. We went to the place where they cut the Centro Sejinaosa for their piragua. It was + 150 feet high. The guide shot it and I3 met carried it to the river. Amazing. We shot #607 & 608 (fairly close to one another). In the same area we shot #609 #610 #611 Right on the border of the rice fields & the forest our guide shot #612. The old man got #613 with a machette. While we were in the forest, the Indians caught by hand #614 & 615. We went to lunch & all went back to the house because the clouds were full about to rain. While carrying the piragua I should marvel at how the Indians could carry (raw food) 100lbs each?!

C. Paereloo 1967 Journal 67 Sep 29th. 4Km N, 3.5Km Wg mouth Rio Yugusoa, Darien Prov., Panama Nice across a log that I couldn't even cross with boots. Rain was heavy long. Since I'm still a little afraid to be out at night we decided the best way there would be, to float down the Rio & camp in the boat further down the Rio. The morning passed with only minor incidences - no rain. I was very upset to find the river had flooded (up 4-5 feet) and has taken #600 & 603 with it. The Indians & Peter dived for them before we left (8:30 AM) but no lucks. We had the penagua to camp at a mud bank. The river flooded only one more foot so there was no problem. The evening was warm. Saw a tern(?) out. Sep 30th First thing I did was remove the last of the thorns - my feet are very sore. There was heavy mist but my raincoat didn't leak during the night morning so no problem. We floated for about 6-7 hours during which time we saw the following birds: turkey vultures, black vultures, striped heron, little blue herons, neotropic coomunt, Green Ibis, spotted sandpiper, blue gold Macaw, Ringed Kingfisher, woodpecker (with Lined or Red Crowned), Tropical Kingbird slaty margin flycatcher, (tern swallows?), Rough- winged swallows, Mangrove swallows, blue headed

E.Careless 1967 Journal 68 Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama Sept 30th parrots, orange chinied parakeets, Redford parroted or meali parrot. Capped heron. Arrived just before dinner feel too tired to eat so went directly to bed. Forgot to mention #616 #617 As we were about to go swimming off the pirogua these two little creatures decided to swim too. Peter + I chased them in the boat & they were killed with the paddle. We changed swimming holes. #618 had in its stomach sardines 1 large (56mm) 3 small (40m) shrimp, parts of other fish. C. Carvelin 1967 Journal 69 Gavija, Darien Prov., Rep de Panama October 1 raced back to try to find them. No luck. The usual birds (in transit). October 2 spent quite a long morning packing alcoholics. a few had rotted - again the bad formaldehyde when got to Panama City Gaviell put new formaldehyde & all packed & re-packed with cheese-cloth. The skeletons are slow in drying & a few got moldy while we were up river. Also also had to remove maggots from dead killed heron #605. The afternoon hours spent the same as the many a little hunter brought us #626 slaw killed across the river from town. #627 a little lanky, trachy. we went to dinner at John & Ruth Jenkins. they are 2 of the 4 missionaries on Rio Chico disadvantage Gavija. The other 2 are Alec & Sylvia Harwood. They live right by one another. Some late. Light drizzle October 3 set up 5 mist nets around the plantano plants in the backyard of the missionaries. Sketching & drawing bird details. Warm day - thread's rain. did washing. Clothes tend to mold easily. necessary to air them frequently. Nights usually warm. C. Carder 1967 Journal 20 Oct 3rd. Lomi e Yareija, Darian Prov., Rep de Panama a small gold chain . $3.00. Had dinner early & headed for the nets. The earliest set was at 2:30 PM. We stayed up all night. There was a very slight mist most of the night. It was very cold and tired about 3:44 PM we were better by Oct 4th within #641 or #643. Hence at 5:45 AM we gimpoled in the paragua & raced for El Real with the two boats. Bob Fish was going to Panama City & could have the sets checked for us. We hope if Peters must have PABIS photos that they will send them so we can do it here instead of Panama City. Peter had to change the plane downed the landing strip, but we made it. Got the meds in El Real. Received Dr. Pearson's check for $150.00 which pays for what I have spent in Costa Rica & here. Leaves a little for buying animals the kids bring in. Also in El Real we checked for the shot gun that was supposed to have been sent me. No luck. Bought some alcohol since I couldn't get formaldehyde. Will use it till Oct 9th when I plan to go to Panama City for supplies. It takes so long to do everything here. Finally at 1:00 we took a nap till four. (October) Many more bats after 12 midnight than the other night. #718 was found under a house. #719 in a 15 foot high net between two palm trees. #720 on lawn. #721 was "captured alive" set free) town. They call it "chicken of the mountain!" tried to raise it but with no luck. No became very weak. Tonight is the big night. The five best little hunters, Peter & I are going frog hunting. It is dry - very dry - for this time o year & we are almost out of drinking (rain) water so I haven't any high hopes for a huge catch. We went across up the river a little. Saw nothing. We stopped at the yaveja sawmill & scouted around. Under some large (dia 2 feet) logs we found #722 Also here we found #723 , 724 , #725 , #726 just a few hundred yards further on at midday we found #727 + 728 These few little frogs having taken so long to find we decided to wait for a rain before we have an organized frog hunt again.

C. Cavelen 1967 Journal 74 Yaviza, Darien, Rep de Panama Oct 8th Went to El Real today - check results of test test. told that no injections were necessary for Pete. Heavy rain on the way home - cold. Rain light mostly the evening. Oct. 9 Sick during the night again - Chills, then for signs. Felt relieved in the morning. Took ADSA ($10.50) to Panama City. I recommend flying from El Real dot Yaviza. Taking off from Yaviza is quite an experience AND the airfield has been condemned several times. As a matter of fact I recommend taking a boat. If it weren't for such careful examination & medicines etc on the boat I would have taken it. We flew through clouds, rain, and the pilot was not in communication with anyone. No problem at Paitilla airport. My friends Lt & Mrs. William D Sherman and Mad Lt. F. Larego Purcell of the National Guard met me so no one checked my bags. Lt. Purcell also sent me a 12 gauge shot gun, a 22 and some shells - most of which I received. He put them through the Guardia which as I shall we say on the up & up. I am staying in the zone with Billy Ellen.

Warm day, rain heavier but not heavy. Dinners at the Shurmans where I am staying. To sleep early 10:30 Oct. 12th Ellen Shuman took me to lecture on Panama & the U.S.A.F. SO given by Bill Shuman. More packing & making new tags. Dr. at 11:00. Really don't understand exactly what it is (have but he gave me polycillin for it). Some sort of bacteria + sore throat (but my throat isn't sore!) also got a gamma globulin shot. With all the illness in Darien I consider myself VERY lucky not to have anything serious! Tried, without success to locate some friends of Peter's to give message. Sent telegram to Yaviza (in Spanish) from Post Office. Only possible certain hours (checks before venturing out) to try & find it. Oct 13 more nellybelly & packing - Ellen & I went to culture program well arranged. got gamoglobulin #773 #774 , #775 #776 , #777 men caught under the drain which runs under the drive way. O. Caroline 1967 Journal 78 Oct 18 Allbrook Air Force Base, Canal Zone. Pan Am. for air freight. Call office for schedule. Cost $70.00 for 100 lbs. Planes do not leave every day. Check Pan American Airways air freight office. Speak English if necessary. No one asked for my collecting permit or shipper permit (export or import). I'm not certain why but I think it's due to 3 reasons: First they were a little bewildered that a girl would send 'this sort of thing'. Second - return address I used Air Force Academy - no crates were going from Academy to University. Third I was with Bill Sherman who speaks Spanish so well they didn't believe he was American except that he was in uniform). C. Cavelow 1967 Journal 79 Oct 18 Albrook Air Force Base Canal zone address. I suggest a phone call - its cheap. (try military radio mars if possible) Contacts in the canal zone are invaluable. I recommend speaking Spanish to every Latin, even if he speaks English. This surprises them & they love it. Please Corps contacts are also invaluable. They know many of the "little things" that make all the difference (where to get what inexpensively, where to stay, who can help you in out of the way places, what families to visit, who to watch out for (very imp*)). Oct 21 Taboga Island, Rep. de Panama. Since Peter Stutley was in Panama for rabies shots he & I w/ several other peace corps volunteers decided to go to Taboga Island. Since there was no doctors there, I gave Peter the shot. Met 2 men who were stationed there (they showed us some rooms on the far side of the island. In- stead of going around the island by boat which I recommend) we walked through the forest down very steep slippery hills. C. Cavelen 1967 Journal 80 Oct 21 Taboga Island, Rep de Panama walked on the rocks around the island. It gets Taboga is lowy. Lavender g once a day during the week & very often on weekends. The island is like a storybook. Little curvy streets lined with flowers & trees. The bats were about 20 feet up. They were clust[er]d in two groups. They weren't still - some were crawly[ing] down the walls & others were moving their heads around. Every 5 min or so one would fly from the group, circle & then land again in the pile of bats. I'd guess about 200 of them. ledge where Peter stood Henry & Don were n side the cave & threw rocks at the clust[er]s of bats Some fell dead & other were frightened & stunned & would try to fly out. Only about 15 were caught in the mist net. Most flew out high up where Peter was. He had a fishing landing net & purling at them as they flew out. This stunned them more. He would then drop them to me & I [illegible] injected them. Some got away before I could injest them. We laughed the entire time because there were bats & stones flying everywhere. I am cursan we lost about 30 bats because they fell mist net stood here.

C. Ceccalini 1967 81 Journal Taboga Island, Rep de Panama through the rocks on the cave floor - we couldn't reach them - we didn't bring flash lights. About 6 people inquired about my authorization to catch bats on Taboga. Explained that the University of California had made all arrangements for me & 5 women & exactly stated what channels they had to do it. My, my, it's a good they no one wanted to see the permits (which don't exist). The bats # 843 - 891. Oct 22 From a fresh water river & stream combination came # 909 a collection of tadpoles & frogs. # 892 - # 907 were collected from all over the island. They are EVERYWHERE. Got a ride in a truck (only one on island - nocars only 1 jeep for army) up to the roaday night. Great view of Panama & all the islands around & the ships waiting to get into the canal. # 908 on wall of cement. C. Cavallari 1967 Journal 82 Varied Pwd., Panama Oct 30 ALEC Real is has nothing. ADSA is a 2 engine plane (had an accident 3 days ago but no one hurt). TASA is an antiguo one engine but it has a jeep at ALEC Real which can take one to the river to catch a boat to Yaviza. The reason I stayed in Panama City for so long was that Fuller was getting his rabies shots & I didn't want to be in Yaviza alone. I understand that is being super cautious but... took TASA - this time only 6 in plane - it was much more comfortable. Landed at La Palma - farm town - amazingly little fishing - shrimp boats but not actually from La Palma - no hotel landing field long - capital to Navien Place Corps there - cleared land because there are many Chirigacos who farm Sarachine - landing field long & bumpy - moderate clearing - pop approx 500. no place corps, no missionary - no hotel (horses) Sambu - landing field bumpy - extensive clearing near town - many Indians river to Sambu navigable by shrimp boats - no hotel - Dick Scott is missionary who might be able to

C. Cavalen 1967 Journal 83 Darien Prov. Rep de Panama Oct 30. give information re number of boats or horses pop. less than 500. Rives good for transportation). People are friendly. If one wanted to, one could go to any town in Darien (with permits) talk to the Guardia she might find a place to stay w one of the rieros. As a gift for spending the night (rather than paying money) 22 shells would be great. (1 Box pr night) canned American canned food also good gift. It is best not to pay them in money when they do you a favor (like spend thoughts) of however you rent a boat & a boatman pay in dollars. Boat, boatman (highly recommended) and motor should be no more than $5 for [illegible] motor, $[illegible] for boatman, $1 for boat plus gas. For a collecting trip you might want a marinero (pole man) about $2.00 a day. The upper rivers frequently require poling rather than motors. These people should be cooks & set up camp for above price. There is a Doctor w El Reel, La Palma & maybe Jaque. Telegraph in Yaviza, El Reel, & La Palma maybe Jaque. The river water is not

O. Paulin 1967 Journal 84 Darlen Prov., Rep de Panama Oct 30 drinkable without purification tablets. Common diseases: T.B. (hepatitus) and amoebic dysentery. Stapholoccus infections are common with cuts etc. Food is bought in quantity transported here by boat it is cheaper than buying it in Darien. Coca-Cola is everywhere (frequently cold) if one doesn't want to drink town water. Gem told the liquor is terrible. Cheap ask Peace Corps missionaries for help. One can buy good fresh bread early in the morning in small towns. If you were the kids of the town or "monte" & help collect bring lots of rubber tubing, $15-$ per foot if you buy 50 feet at one time. Get this in Panama City. After landing in El Real we went up the Rio Pirre (visited an Indian family). We used machete several times to cut path through fallen trees in the river. We got to Yodija (after rain) in time for dinner. The kids brought # 910 - 917 from town. Oct 31 # 918 was found in the little stream in town. Tried to force fed him but he would not so he is now a specimen. # 918 - 924 are all from town

C. Carvel 1967 Journal 86 Gaviza, Darien Co., S.E. of Panama. Nov.2 saw shot in dense brush about 2 1/2 mi from river. The wreck was up down hills & hot. #948 was shot from tree + 75 feet up. I got only the skull & don't know what else it is. Light rain +1 hour. Nov.3 #948 (shell only) was part of breakfast this morning. Not bad really. Ends. #954 #957 from town. #955 and #956. from same place with thatched roof. Another parade - the one to celbrate Panama's independence from Colombia. #959 + 960 from across the river from Gaviza found in grass. Nov.4 #962 by little hunter who said he got it in a tree! #963-973 are from paja roofs in Bocov. Method to catch same is up river with the Indians. Take the roof & when the bat fly out catch them in a fish catching net. This causes some confusion because dirt falls & bats fly all over! Very heavy rain for about 15 minutes only. C. Cavelow 1967 Journal 87 Yaviza, Darien Prov., Panama Nov. 6 to El Real - Peter has something in his foot we can't get it out. 2 hrs. wait for doctor. Bought a little wooden (coco bolo) armadillo made by some Indians. # 992 - 997 are from Yaviza shot by little hunters. Some rain - VERY hot tonight at 8:30 PM Nov. 7 # 998, # 999 # 1001 from across the river from Yaviza - still considered Yaviza by people there. # 1000 from paja roof & trees. # 1002 & 1003 Yaviza. overcast very little rain but very warm. about 8 Indians visiting - confusion. I packed to go up river tomorrow. Nov 8-12 # 1007 1008 by little hunters. Up river - fought 2 "little cats" one ocelot & one margay. Both were $10.00 each. Also bought one parrot & a macaw $4.00. Nov 13 # 1017 -> 1056 Little hunters brought. Nov 14 1057 -> 1074 " " Packing to go to Panama. Almost all time playing with two cats & two grisons ($2.00 each). Grisons smell worse very poorly. Eat each meal as they hadn't eaten in days.

C. Cavallu 1967 Journal 88 Yaviza, Darien Prov., Panama Nov. 14 cont. Petus friends gave going away party for him. Nov. 15 Plane to Panama Nov. 26 The # 1075 I bought up nine dead. I think the parrot is chewed the cage with pecked at to death. Two days ago I had check by vet & was alright. Nov. 27 Set shipment to MVZ. Also sent the two cats & two grasses & one parrot home. Cages had to be built special measurements. They did ask for health certificates for animals but not for specimen for MVZ.
