September 11 Yaviza, Darien Prov., Rep. de Panama At that moment I was having trouble understanding what I was doing here too because directly below were two crashed airplanes & a landing strip which I couldn't tell from the forest!! Well, the mud wasn't quite as deep as though I didn't hit any of the trees. (I have a pilot's license & am not usually too afraid, however I usually don't try to top trees with airplane wings) Got out of the plane, conversed with pilot for a few minutes & he went. Since there was no sign or people around I really certain Yaviza in Yaviza. Walked to the river a few feet away & tried to wave down a boat. The people were friendly.... they waved back. Finally (1 1/2 hrs. later) I got 3 men to understand I wanted to go across the river to what I guessed was Yaviza. The three of us all the luggage (mostly collecty stuff) got in dug out canoes & went across down river. The banks are steep slippery. They hadn't heard of my friend by name but did know of one Gringo (white non-Spanish speaking) who lived down town with a dug out canoe called the "Pink Panther".
