From the leaves of the sugar cane came#
#674 x 675. By the way one
eats sugar cane by cutting off hard outside
& chewing & sucking on inside & cane, then
throwing away the fibrous part there is more
cane underneath. Needless to say I fell asleep
early because of no sleep last night. Rains.
October 5 Became quite sick to my stomach at 3:15 had
a hard time sleeping - had chills & then was too
hot. I awoke this morning feeling great !!
Never have been so mighty Gate. Boy, do I
miss American food about now. When I get
to Panama City I plan to spend at least ½ the
time eating. Warm day - over cast, dark
clouds. I hope it doesn't rain tonight because
I don't want to stay up & get bats again. Wrote letters.
Am weeks behind in correspondence. Tried to rest
in the afternoon but it was too hot. On way to bat
nets by river some Indians stopped us and gave
us #681 in exchange for eggs again.
They say they aren't common near the river where
I was found. The people in town believed it to
be the mother of the coral snake & very
dangerous). Rain early in the morning so bats
