M. Dziadosz 1978 El Jiol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 31 August We arrived at Hotel El Jiol last night. This morning Mercedes Foster took Anne Jacobberger, Red Johnson, Gene Schupp and I on a tour of the El Jiol area. Mercedes has given each of us a map of the El Jiol area which has the names which Bob Jones and she gave to the creeks, paths and landmarks of the area. I will include a copy of the map (which is two pages long) and will refer to places by the names given to them on the map. At 13:15 this afternoon I left the hotel to record birds. The equipment I am using is a Uher 4000 Report IC tape recorder powered by nicad rechargeable batteries, a Sennheiser MKH 804 microphone and battery pack, a Uher W214 headset and a Sennheiser windscreen. The weather was clear and cool (approximately 65%) with medium to strong winds. I walked along the airstrip, across the tung orchard and castor trees areas to Becker's forest, and back. There was very little vocalizing going on, though I did get some recordings. I returned to the hotel at 15:45.

U.M.Dziedoy 1978 El Jio, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 31 August While in the hotel I heard some calls being given outside and found there were Gray-breasted Martins (Progne chalybea) circling high overhead. I recorded the birds as they flew overhead and while they were roosting inside the porch roof of one of the hotel's rooms. 1 September Left the hotel at 07:35 today. The weather was cool, with an overcast sky and slight winds. I took the trails from the hotel to the garbage dump and then took Middle Trail. I turned back on Middle Trail before it crossed Barana Creek, and returned via the same route at 11:00 From 16:15 to 17:45 I went to the reservoir and airstrip to see if there were any pronounced increase in bird vocalizing towards dusk. Although a number of doves of at least two different species were calling, in general the seemed to be no pronounced increase in vocalizing over what I heard around there yes terday in the late morning and in the afternoon. 2 September Left the hotel at 05:45 today. V.M. Djiadoz 1978 El Jirol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 2 September: weather was cool, with an overcast sky and no strong winds. From 05:45 to 07:30 I walked around the Hotel El Jirol buildings, recording. (To simplify identification of the buildings, I am labelling them with numbers on the map. I will also draw in and label structures not shown on the original map.) At 07:45 I left the hotel area and took the following route: from the airstrip to tung orchards and manioc fields, out to the road and then into the pasture by the road (which I'm labelling pasture #1), through Becker's forest to the castor tree area, across the pasture (#2) to the 'cut over, grazed forest', back through pasture #2 to the field which has been recently plowed (not on original map, I'm drawing it in) and to the airstrip. I returned to the hotel at 12:25. From 16:20 to 17:40 I recorded around the hotel buildings. A large group of people was arriving at the hotel, and it was difficult at times to hear birds over the people noise. There were very few

U.M. Dzladoz 1978 El Tuiol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 2 September bird species vocalizing, and most of the vocalizations were calls, not songs. 3 September I had planned to start recording early this morning, but decided not to when I noticed soldiers with rifles posted around the hotel. A party was held last night for the wife of the president of Paraguay, and the soldiers were "protecting" her. At 12:55 I started on the path which leads from the miniature golf course to the dining room area. I then cut across to the gravel pit, and then took Middle Trail and Bamboo Trail back to the hotel area. I then walked around the hotel area until 17:00. The weather was cool, with heavily overcast skies and no wind. There was very little bird vocalizing going on. On Middle Trail I walked by at least three (seemingly) separate Stephanoxis lalandi Leks which were very noisy. Other than that, the only species which were singing consistently were Basileuterus culicivorus and Basileuterus leucoblepharus. 4 September The weather conditions today were

M. Dzierosz 1978 El Jiol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NWG Encarnacion by road. Depto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 4 September cool temperatures with a heavily overcast sky. At times there was rain falling, but most often there was a heavy mist. I was in the field from 07:30 to 11:15 (when the rain got too strong to do any recording). I tried to stay in relatively open areas because the trees were dropping a lot of waters. I went from the hotel to the airstrip across the tung orchard to the castor tree area, across the NW portion of Becker's forest to pasture #1, then back to the hotel via the road and airstrip. There were very few birds vocalizing. 5 September Today there was again a heavy mist. In the afternoon the mist lifted, but it was still heavily overcast. Temperatures were cool. At 07:35 I took the road out of the hotel area and walked down the road to Encarnacion. I then took the road which leads to Becker's forest to the airstrip. From the airstrip I went to the gravel pit, where I spent most the morning (from approximately 8:30 to 12:00).

U.M. Diacoz 1978 El Juol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 5 September There was a relatively large number of species in the gravel pit area, though most species were singing or calling only briefly and would not respond to playback. After recording in the gravel pit area I walked up the Airstrip Trail to manakin lek #IV, then turned back and arrived at the hotel at 13:00. This afternoon I arrived at the gravel pit at 16:00. I stayed in the area for an hour, but the only steady vocalizing I heard was from distant Basileuterus leucoblepharus, Thamnophilus coerulescens and doves. I then went back to the hotel area, where I listened for birds until 17:50. 6 September From 05:45 to 07:00 I walked around the hotel buildings and down the road to the highway. There was a heavy overcast and the temperature was cool. From 07:45 to 10:45 I stayed at the glavel pit. I then walked down the airstrip to the tung orchard. V.M. Dzieroz 1978 El Jir6l, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 6 September, tried to record a Furnarius rufus and black cowbirds in the tung orchard, but the barking dog which patrols the area scared the birds away (his barking will probably be heard on many of the tapes). The weather began to clear about 09:00, and the remainder of the day had a blue sky with white clouds and warmer temperatures (probably in the low 70's). I went out again from 15:15 to 17:45, taking the airstrip to the tung fields and castor tree area. I spent most of my time at the edge of Becker's forest. (The edge of Becker's forest and the gravel pit have so far yielded the best variety of vocalizing birds.) O.M Diago 1978 Hotel El Trul, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road Dpto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 7 September: golf course to the airstrip trail, and followed the airstrip trail to manakin lek #IV. I stayed in the general area of the manakin lek until 12:00, when I started back to the hotel. The area around manakin lek #IV had more singing and a larger variety of birds than probably any other area I've relatively visited here so far. (This large amounts of singing and variety may be due to the facts that the weather is getting warmer, it's getting to be later in the spring, and I haven't spent that much time inside the forested areas). I took the same route back to the hotel. When I reached building #1 I noticed White Woodpeckers (Melanerpes candidus) calling from behind the building. I recorded them and then returned to my room at 12:35. It rained throughout the afternoon so I didn't do any recording. 8 September: As I left the hotel at 08:45 today, the weather began to clear. U.M. Dzialos 1978 El Triol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 8 September no to medium winds. I took the Airstrip Trail after taking the path from the miniature golf course I then followed the Airstrip Trail to Tree Fern Creek, at which point I took the path to the "cleared fields + house" area. I walked around this area (seeing 2 Melanerpes candidus, a Zonotrichia capensis, a Colaptes campestris and an unidentified Buteo-sized hawk), and then took the same route back to the hotel returning at 12:25. 9 September At 07:35 I left the hotel. The sky was blue with white clouds, the temperature was warm, and there were slight to medium winds. I first took the path from the miniature golf course to the Airstrip Trail. While on the Airstrip Trail, I stopped for about an hour at manakin lek #IV. While I was a re- cording a Southern Antpitta (Crytopsis delalandi) at lek #IV, Ned Johnson came by (he was attracting by the bird's song). I played my recording back, the bird approached, and Ned shot the bird (NKJ #3952). Ned told me that he had seen a big black ceterid singing in the "cleared fields + house

U.M.Dziados 1978 El Juiol, 230 m., 19.5 km, NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 9 September area, so I took the path to that area after I left the lek. I couldn't find the ictirid. I then took the Cross Country Trail, the NE portion of the Loop Trail, and Middle Trail back to the hotel. While on the Cross Country Trail I took a detour to the corn field and walked around its SW portion. About 14:30 I was in my room when I heard strange sounds outside. I ran out and saw a small (4?) flock of swifts which I couldn't readily identify. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to assemble my recording equipment and record them (and to get a better look at them). Right after this I recorded Icterus sayaca, the Sayaca Tanager, on the hotel grounds. At 16:05 I left the hotel once again. At first I walked around the hotel grounds, then took the path from the miniature golf course to the Airstrip Trail. From about 16:20 to 16:50 I sat in the airstrip looking at the along Airstrip Trail trees on the SE side of the airstrip, Mercedes Foster said she had seen

V.M. Dziadboz 1978 El Juró, 230 m., 19.5 km. WNW Encarnación by road. Dpto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 9 September a number of Euphonia individuals there this morning, and I was interested in recording them and anything else that was vocalizing. I'll describe what I saw in the Turdus spp. species account. I then walked down the airstrip and back to the hotel. I intended to listen for vocalizations until dark, but the noise of the hotel guests made me give up about 17:45. 10 September The weather today was clear, with warm (approximately 70-75°F) temperatures and slight to medium winds. At 08:10 I left the hotel and took the path from the miniature golf course to the airstrip trail. I spent almost all the morning in and around the manakin lek # IV area. At one point I walked down to Fern Creek and walked in the creek bed, looking for rails (I didn't find any). I returned by the same route, and got back to the hotel at 13:30. At 16:00 I went to the airstrip, and then walked to the gravel pit. I stayed at the gravel pit for about 30 minutes (16:30-17:00), then walked along the various

I then sat near the swimming pool near buildings #1 and 2, listening for dusk singers (I only heard short series of thrush songs). I returned to my room at 17:50. This morning at 07:00 the Gray- breasted Martins (Progne chalybea) were perched in the trees in front of building #1, calling. They were flying around the porches of the rooms and circling the swimming pool in front of the building. This is the first time they have been so visible and vocal in the morning. 11 September The weather today was the same as that of yesterday, only a little warmer. From 05:45 to 07:30 I took the following route: around the hotel grounds, down the road to the highway, down the highway (to Encarnacion) to the road to Becker's forest, down the road to Becker's to the airstrip, down the airstrip and back to the hotel. At 08:20 I started out on the Bamboo Trail. I turned back at 09:00 and

U.M. Dziadacz 1978 El Inol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNW Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 11 September went to Becker's forest via the airstrip. I walked around the NE portion of the forest, mainly looking for an Empidonax eulei which I had heard there before (I found it). I returned via pasture #2 and the airstrip and reached the hotel at 12:00. At 15:30 I took the airstrip to the tung orchard. I walked across the tung orchards and manioc fields and checked the cow field for Furnarius rufus and [illegible] cowsbirds (which weren't there). I then walked through the NW portion of Becker's forest and pasture #1. On the way back to the hotel I listened for birds along the road and airstrip and returned at 17:40. 12 September The weather today was similar to that of the past two days, only Today the wind was sometimes quite strong. U.M. Diaz 1978 El Juiol, 230 m., 195 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Depto. Itapua, Paraguay. 12 September finished about 10:00. From 10:00 to about 12:30 I took the Lower Loop, Cross Country and Airstrip Trails and then returned to the hotel. At 15:40 I took the path from the miniature golf course to the Airstrip Trail, and then walked to marakini Lek #IV. I waited at the lek for an hour (from 16:00 to 17:00), but there was very little vocalizing going on. I returned to the hotel via the Cross Country, Loop and Middle Trails, and arrived at 18:00. 13 September The most memorable thing about today was the weather. It was very windy all day with trees being blown around the hotel. There were occasional periods of rain and some of sunshine, but mostly the sky was gray. The temperature was quite warm, I'd say in the high 70's. In the early morning I was discouraged from recording by the strong winds and the periods of rain. At 09:40 I ventured out, howerer, and took Middle, Loop and Cross Country Trails to the cornfield. I was just about to pursue some birds on the Lower,

U. M. Dyrden 1978 El Triol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NW of Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 13 September road when it started to thunder, then pour. I headed back to the trails and got about halfway back to the hotel when the sun came out. Since there was still a lot of wind and almost no vocalizing, I decided to go back to the hotel, returning at 11:40 using the route I took to the cornfield. At 15:30 I checked the mist nets around the hotel to see if they had any Basileuterus in them, and I brought along the recording equipment. The wind was still very strong, and there was very little vocalizing going on. I returned to the hotel around 17:00. One interesting aspect of this very windy day was that I got to watch the birds soaring high overhead, being carried by the winds. Seen soaring were a Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea), 2 Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus) and a flock of Gray- breasted Martins. I saw a Swallow- tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) soaring downhill from the hotel. 14 September Last night we had a thunderstorm with heavy rain. U.M. Dzyadoviz 1978 El Juic, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 14 September left the hotel. I took the Airstrip and Cross Country Trails to the cornfield, and walked down the lower road. There were some new-sounding vocalizations there, so I would like to go back there. I stayed on the lower road until 17:15, at which time I started on the Cross Country Trail and took the Loop and Middle Trails back to the hotel. I got back to the hotel at 18:00. While I was out this afternoon, the sky was overcast and the temperature was relatively cool. There was drizzling while I was in the cornfield and on the lower road. 15 September The weather today was warm, with a blue sky and scattered white clouds and no to slight winds. I left the hotel at, about 07:15 today and took the path from the ministere golf course to the Airstrip Trail. I walked down the Airstrip Trail and the path to the "cleared fields + house" area, recording Basileuterus culicivorus and Empidonax euleri and tagging the areas where I recorded the birds. U.M. Dziadosz 1978 El Juoé, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE by Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapúa Paraguay. 15 September hotel about 12:00 after taking the Cross Country Loop, Middle and Bamboo Trails. about At 15:00 I left the hotel again. I took a path to the airstrip, then walked the main road to about ½ mile past (SE) Becker's Forest, to the field on the NW side of the road that is bordered by very large eucalyptus trees. I spent most of my time looking into the fields along the road, trying to find some different species. There were many Rufous-collared Sparrows also (Zonotrichia capensis) along the road, and their song was by far the most common. I took the same route back to the hotel. and returned at ___________ After dinner I left the hotel with Ned Johnson and Anne Jacobberger to look for owls and caprimulgids. Ned called from near the airstrip and the gravel pit, but there was no response. We did hear a caprimulgid, but it seemed to be very far off to the NE. We then decided to try the tangu orchard, where there was supposed to be Otus. On the walk over to the tangu orchard we talked about how light it was (there was

U. M. Dzieroz 1978 El Juil, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 15 September a full moon brightly illuminating our way). When we reached the tung orchard we heard a caprimulgid with a call similar (if not the same) as the one we heard from the gravel pit. As we approached the bird, Ned gave a few calls and 2 Otus (probably choliba) approached and sat within 20 ft. of us. Ned called some more and I got some recordings of one Otus. Ned tried unsuccessfully to collect the caprimulgid but I did get some recordings of it. We later passed some Otus (probable, choliba), with Ned calling and me recording and trying playback. I believe I heard 3 Otus calling at once from the tung orchard area. We then (it was about 23:00 by now) walked to the "cut over, grazed forest" area, and Ned tried unsuccessfully to call in other species of owls. As we were walking back, we heard a bird (caprimulgid?) calling from the area where Becker's Forest borders pasture #2, and I recorded it. We got back to the hotel at midnight. 16 September I left the hotel at 07:45, and then took the path from the miniature golf course.

V. M. Dzialoz 1978 El Iniol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road Dpto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 16 September to Middle Trail. I then surveyed the Basilentus culicivorus and Empidonax euleni on Loop and Cross Country Trails. After I had finished, I took the Airstrip Trail back to the hotel, arriving at 13:15. At 16:00 I started my period of recording around the hotel. I was most interested in getting recordings of the swifts which have been flying overhead and of Euphonia. The swifts flew over a few times, but were very high and only called briefly. The Euphonia weren't around (or weren't calling). I returned to my room at 18:00 17 September I started the day at 05:40, walking the area around the hotel, listening for Basilentus culicivorus and Empidonax euleni. I had completed the hotel grounds and was working on the paths around the hotel when the wind (which had to that point been of medium strength) became very strong, whipping the tree tops about. I gave up the survey at that time, which was 07:30. At 09:30 I took the path from the miniature golf course area to the Airstrip Trail and then walked the Airstrip Trail. I spent about 45 minutes at manakin lek IV,

U. M. Dziadon 1978 El Triol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua Paraguay. 17 September listening for an Empidonax fulvii I had heard near there, but it wasn't vocalizing. It was very quiet there, and what did sing sang only briefly. An exception to this was a Tropical Parula (Parula pitiayumi) which was singing continuously from the tree tops near Green Creek. I took the Cross Country Loop (the part to Bamboo Trail) and Middle Trails back to the hotel, arriving at 12:10. On the way (and earlier in the morning), I checked the 5 nets that are up. The temperature by this time was the warmest it's been here so far (probably in the 80's F). At 16:30 I took the path to the area in which they were loading gravel at the airstrip. The wind was still very strong, and almost nothing was vocalizing. I returned to the hotel at 17:45. 18 September It was very windy today. The temperature was very warm, and it was humid with an overcast sky. Because of the wind, I did not continue the survey of Basileuterus culicivorus and Empidonax fulvii, but instead hiked

U.M. Dagadog 1978 El Juiol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NWE Encarnacion by road. Apts. Itapua, Paraguay. 18 September around listening for other species. At 07:45 I left the hotel and took the path to the airstrip. I walked down the airstrip until I reached one of the other paths leading to the hotel, and then walked parallel to the hotel until I reached Middle Trail. I took Middle Trail until I reached the Super Fern Trail, which I took up to the Cross Creek Trail. I had never been on Super Fern Trail before, and recorded a Campephilus robustus and unidentified dendrocolaptid there. In general, there seemed to be a relatively large amount of vocalizing going on around that trail, even though the wind was sometimes very strong and whipped the treetops about. I took the Bamboo Trail back to the hotel, returning at 11:45. At 15:45 I took the path to the airstrip and spent until 17:30 in the area in which they were trucking out gravel. The wind was still very strong, and the main vocalizers were the Great Kiskadees (Pitangus sulphuratus), House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and Chestnut- Rufous Collared Sparrows.

U.M.Dzindar 1978 El Jul, 230 m, 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 4 September The weather today was like yesterday's. I left the hotel at 07:35, taking the path from the miniature golf course to Middle Trail. I left Middle Trail at the gravel pit, and walked from the gravel pit to the airstrip. While walking through the gravel pit and airstrip, I listened for Basiliscus culicivorus and Empidonax euleri. The wind up to that point had been relatively calm, but it started to pick up once I reached the end of the airstrip. I then walked down the road to Becker's forest. (Anne Jacobberger and Neil Johnson were shooting in the turn orchard and Becker's forest, and the vocalizing of the birds would stop whenever a shot went off.) I walked through the castor tree area to pasture #2, then over to the "cut over, grazed forest." I took the same route back to the hotel, and returned at 13:40. It started to rain at 15:00 and continued past dark, so I didn't record this afternoon.

Itapua, Paraguay. 19 September One bit of behavior of breeding record interest today was a Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) carrying a long piece of vegetation (a palm frond?) The bird was carrying the vegetation up to a tree in the row of trees bordering the road in the yard across the road (NE) of the castor trees field. The time was 09:40. 20 September The weather in the morning was cool (approximately 65 F), overcast, with no to slight winds. The woods were very wet due to yesterday's rain. At 07:45 I left the hotel and took a path from the miniature golf course to Middle Trail. On the way I listened for Basileuterus culicivorus which I recorded before or wanted to record. U.M. Dzierzbos 1978 El Jul, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. While I was recording along the lower road it started to mist, with the mist getting quite heavy at times. I took the same route back to the hotel, returning at 13:45. At 15:45 I left the hotel to record on the airstrip. I spent some time banding a Basileuterus culicivorus from the net in the drainage ditch on the way to the airstrip. At the airstrip it was relatively quiet and in terms of birds and quite windy. I returned to the hotel at 18:00. Today Red Johnson and Anne Jacobberger collected a ♂ and ♀ Caprimulgus parvulus at the spot where Red tried to collect the bird that I recorded on 15 September. 21 September I left the hotel at 07:35 and took the path to the airstrip. It was foggy and misty at that time, but by 08:00 it was clear with a blue sky. The temperature was warm, and there were no to medium winds. At the airstrip I looked at the birds visiting the fruit trees bordering the area in which they were trucking out gravel. I saw a Tigranites substriatus Muscicapa tyrannus,

U.M. Sglador 1978 El Juel, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapúa, Paraguay. 21 September Time I've seen that species away from manakin lek #IV. I stayed at the airstrip until 08:30. From the airstrip I walked down the road to pasture #1. I walked from the pasture to Becker's forest, criss-crossing the forest in search of Basilentemus culiciformis and Empidonax euleri. I then walked through the castor tree area and pasture #2 to the "cut over grazed forest" area., I looked for the two species here and also recorded other birds. I walked back through the pasture (#2) hoping to record a species of Zonotrichia capensis, but the wind was getting quite strong and was destroying most of the recordings. I then walked back via the castor tree area, road and airstrip returning at 13:15. At 15:30 I walked the drainage ditch to the reservoir. There was a small (approximately 10 x 5 ft.) puddle of water, though but none of the herons I had hoped for. I then walked the paths to the gravel pit, but the gravel pit was very quiet. Next I walked Middle and Loop Trails, and returned to the hotel via Middle Trail at 17:45.

Anne Jacobberger collected an Empidonax euleri today near where I recorded one on September in the "cut over grazed forest" area. The specimen has her catalogue number 3999. (Anne shot the bird a short time after I had been in the area and heard an Empidonax euleri, and I probably got it in the background of the Basileuterus culicivorus recording I was making.) Anne also collected a Myiodynastes (his specimen number 75) at or near the spot where I recorded one on September from pasture #2. 22 September The temperatures today were the highest we've had since we've been here (probably in the high 80's °F). I walked up the road to its intersection with the road to Encarnacion, then came back to the airstrip and the hotel, arriving at 18:00. 3 September I left the hotel at 06:00 today and walked out the hotel road leading to the road to Encarnacion. I recorded birds and saw a species which hasn't been collected yet by M.V.Z people, the Chestnut-vented Conebill (Conirostrum speciosum). The cone- bill was feeding and singing, and was about 8 ft. off the ground in a small hotel tree along the road. I stepped for breakfast at 07:10, and at 07:30 started off for Middle Trail by taking the miniature golf course path. Today I used Mercedes Foster's Sennheiser MKH 815T microphone and battery adapter. Yesterday as I was voicing in the data for the last recording I noticed that there was static somewhere in the system. After trying unsuccessfully to use the microphone after that, I discovered there was a probable loose connection in the battery adapter's cable. I did not go out recording in the afternoon because Gene Schupp was using Mercedes' microphone and battery adapter. I followed the Airstrip Trail to Free Fern Creek, where I took the path to C which leads to the "cleared fields + house" area. I turned back on that path, then took Cross Country, Loop and Bamboo Trails back to the hotel, arriving at 12:45. While walking this route today I removed the tags I had placed along the paths when I had recorded an Empidonax euleri and Basilutetus sulcivorus. From 14:00 to 18:15 I worked around the hotel grounds, making a more detailed map than the one supplied by Mercedes and trying to record three species for which I needed recordings (Euphonia, the area's swifts (?), and a tinamou). 25 September The weather today was like that of the past three days, only it was very windy from about 10:00 to 15:00. At 06:30 I left my room and walked around the hotel grounds. From then until 08:00 I tried to record birds for which I had few recordings. I continued this task from 08:15 to 10:45, walking to the airstrip (to the road to Becker's forest) and to the gravel pit.

Itapua, Paraguay. 5 September When I returned to the hotel at 10:45 I heard a Glaucidium brasilianum call and a Red Johnson imitation. I met Red who had been trying unsuccessfully to see the owl. He went back and called the owl some more but the owl only called a few times. The owl was near where I had recorded one on 3 September, that is SE of the dining hall swimming pool. this afternoon. While packing I kept my door open, listening for interesting bird sounds. From 17:15 and to 18:00 I went to the carport behind hotel building #1 and recorded thrushes.

U.M. Diazioz 1978 Turdus spp. El Juiol, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 2 September At 07:50 I saw a flock of Turdus individuals in the trees on the NW side of the airstrip where they are hauling gravel. There were at least one each of Turdus rufiventris, leucomelas and amaurochalinus. The birds were darting in and out of the vegetation so it was impossible to accurately determine how many birds of each species there were, but I would say estimate that there were at least 20 birds, mostly leucomelas and amaurochalinus. There was no singing and only occasional calls being given. At about 12:00 I saw some Turdus individuals feeding in the recently plowed field across from the airstrip. I was busy recording at the time, and did not identify the thrushes or count them before they left the field. So far I have seen Turdus rufiventris and leucomelas most frequently. They both can be found around the Hotel El Juiol buildings, and sometimes are found alongside the swimming

Although I have both of them give calls from this area, I have only heard snatches of sporadic thrush-like singing, none of which I could pin down to an individual or species. The only time I saw Turdus amaurochalinus was this morning at the airstrip. Red Johnson described a thrush which was probably Turdus nigiceps. He said he saw it in Becker's forest. I have also caught glimpses of thrushes in Becker's forest (leucomelas) and in the tung orchard. This morning I saw two possible nigiceps in pasture #1, 3 September I noticed what seemed to be two leucomelas high in the trees on the slope SE of the dining room {I am sure of leucomelas, but not sure there were two}. The time was about 13:10. At 17:15 I saw two suffiventris rims of the on the swimming pools in front of. hotel building #1. They were scolding loudly, but I was unable to record them. Itapua, Paraguay. 3 September were at the pools again scolding, and I was unable to record them. 4 September There was still a flock of thrushes at the airstrip at 07:40. At 10:45 I saw a rufiventris in pasture #1. Ned said he thought he heard a thrush singing in Becker's forest this morning. At about 10:50 I heard a thrush-like song coming from Becker's forest (I was in pasture #1), but it was raining heavily and I did wanted to get the recording equipment back to the hotel, so I didn't record it or find out what it was. 5 September The flock of thrushes was at the air- strip at 08:00. I heard a thrush-like song coming from the NW at about that time. I finally recorded a Turdus song this afternoon. The details of the recording are given on the tape. I doubt that I've heard the song (of Turdus rufiventris) before, or at least I haven't mentioned it earlier. Today Anne Jacobberger shot an amaurochalinus at the airstrip.

I would guess that it was the same individual I recorded yesterday. At about 10:55 there were still Thrushes at the airstrip. I also noticed thrushes in the tung orchard in the afternoon, about 17:15. I recorded a probable Turdus leucomelas giving calls on the edge of Becker's forest at 17:40. I heard a rufiventris sing at the location behind hotel building #1, where I recorded one last night. I also heard a different type of thrush-like song being given from the same location right after the rufiventris singing stopped, but I don't know what sang it. I used playback, and [illegible] a response from a rufous-bellied thrush (rufiventris or a soiled other species?) 8 September At 12:25 I heard a song like that I recorded yesterday. This also consisted of songs interspersed with calls. About 14:00 I saw a leucomelas in the NW corner of Becker's forest. It was motionless and silent on a limb about 15' up in a tree in the middle of the forest. 9 September While at manakin lek # IV today, I saw at least one rufiventris (time: about 09:00) In the afternoon I saw a flock of approximately 8 turdids feeding on the small fruits of a tall tree on the SE side of the airstrip right above the Airstrip trail (16:20 to 16:50). I saw leucomelas, rufiventris and amauroschalenus in the flock. Also feeding in the same tree were Cacicus haemorrhous (a flock of about 8 which stayed for only a few minutes) and Tersina currirostris. I found two birds (B1 and B2) on the beginning of Bamboo Trail and one (B3) on Middle Trail (I was surprised not to find a bird singing near the chocolate cookie tree because I have recorded a bird here in the park). I believe that I may have recorded B3 in the park. I also heard a few B.c. singing NW of the garbage dump, but wasn't sure it wasn't B1 or B2... Time: 0740-10:00. 15 September Today I censused the birds on the Austrip Trail and path to the "cleared fields + house" area. I found three B.c. (B4, B5 and B6). I heard a fourth bird near manakin lek # IV, but I was unable to record it. I also heard but did not record a bird near E (Empidonax fulvii) 6, which is located near Gene Schupp's Cecropia study area. 16 September Today I censused Loop and Cross Country Trails. While recording B7 near the intersection of Middle and Loop Trails, I heard another B.c. to the NE, probably B3 (see next page). I then recorded B8, a bird I had heard earlier when I recorded E3 at the same site on the loop trail (I believe I heard B3 while recording B8). Itapúa, Paraguay. 16 September B9 (which I recorded further up Loop Trail, bearing it is the same bird I heard near the junction) and a bird singing above where the path crosses Banana Creek. I then walked back down the NW half of the Loop Trail to the Cross Country Trail, where I recorded B10 near the intersection of the path to the cornfield. When I continued walking on down Cross County Trail I heard a B.C. between B10 and Fern Creek, but I was unable to re-hear B10 to tell if this was a new bird. I heard two other birds which I did not record: the bird I've previously mentioned at the garbage dump, and the bird (also previously mentioned) at Lek # IV. Time: 08:30 - ≈ 12:00. While recording B7 I heard both B3 a probable B3 and the bird I've heard singing from the garbage dump. After I recorded B7 it flew off towards B3's area.

Itapua, Paraguay. 17 September I surveyed the area around the hotel, ging up and down the path to the road, around the back of the Reinhard's, building #2 and building #1, around the miniature golf course, and then up down the paths surrounding the hotel. I recorded two birds, B11 and B 12, and heard another bird singing at the same time to the NW of B11. I was unable to record this other bird because it stopped singing. I was going to survey the airstrip and gravel pit but it became too windy. I think the wind was a problem when I surveyed the paths, for a bird I found at the garbage dump-airstrip path intersection was singing only very sporadically and the bird I heard singing on the path to the drainage ditch yesterday was not singing at all. I then walked the Airstip, Cross Country, Loop and Middle Trails. I recorded a bird I had previously, heard near the place where the cornfield path leaves the Cross Country Trail 17 September one after.

U. M. Dzieroz 1978 Basileuterus culicivorus El Inid, 230 m., 19.5 km. NW6 Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 18 September Found an unbanded bird in the mist net behind the hotel at 07:30. The bird escaped before I could band it. I heard birds B11 and B12 from behind the hotel at 07:30. I walked by the area at which I had heard a bird previously, the area in which the paths lead to the drainage ditch and miniature golf course, and I recorded that bird (B13). The bird near the net near the garbage dump-aerostrip path intersection path was singing only sporadically, probably due to wind conditions. I didn't record it. I had wanted to continue my survey of B.c., but it was too windy. Instead I walked to the Superfern Trail via Middle Trail, hearing B3 and B9 on the way. I recorded a bird below the chocolate cookie tree (B14). This is probably the bird I recorded weeks ago at that location and may be the bird I heard calling near Banana Creek recently. On Superfern Trail I heard a B.c. but didn't record it. On the way back to the hotel I heard B2.

V. M. Sgladon 1978 Barbentenus culicivorus El Guac, 230 m, 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road, Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 9 September Once again it was very windy today, but instead of putting off censusing B.C. for yet another day I decided to try doing the gravel and possibly Becker's forest. pit and airstrip. On the way to the gravel pit (via the miniature golf course path and Middle Trail), I checked on birds B12, B13, and the one near the junction of the path to the airstrip. I heard B12. I recorded one bird (B15) on one of the temporary roads on the NW side of the airstrip. At about this time I started having problems (I misthread the tape!) and had to re-record the bird, but I was only able to get 15 secs in my first attempt. The wind began to pick up about this time, so I decided to give up the formal census and walk to Becker's forest. I did hear two B.C. in the "cut over gravel area", both off the path from the SE side of pasture #2. I had recorded one of them, but the microphone batteries weren't functioning. I will try to record them soon. 20 September I left the hotel today hoping that the weather (cool, overcast) and the wet forest wouldn't disastrously affect my censusing.

V. M. Sziradon 1978 Basileuterus culicivorus El Juil, 230 m., 19.5 km. NNE Encarnacion by road. Dpto. Itapua, Paraguay. 20 September of B.C. I would have liked to put it off until a day with better weather, but we only have less than a week left here and the weather hasn't been good recently. I decided to census Super Fern and Cross Creek Trails and part of the corn field area. On the way (via the hotel, miniature golf course, Middle Trail and Bamboo Trail), I listened for B11, B12, B13, B7, B3, B9 and B14. I heard B11, B12, B13, B13, possibly B9 (I heard a bird near Banana Creek while I was near B14) and B14. I spent some time investigating the bird at the junction of the path parallel to the miniature golf course and the path to the airstrip. When this bird was singing I didn't hear B13, but after it stopped singing B13 could be heard. I would think this casts doubt on there being two birds here. I recorded the bird at the garbage dump (B16). The recording and census today was quite depressing because it was very hard to locate B.C. and the birds that were singing were singing for only short series. I heard a bird near

The junction of Super Jen Trail and Cross Creek Trail and sw up the creek. This is probably the bird I heard at the same location on 18 September. I recorded "two" birds (B17 and B18) near the beginning of the lower road. I am not certain that there are not the same bird because they were within 200' of each other, and I could not be certain that I heard them singing at the same time. (While I recorded these birds there was a mist- like rain.) (fewer than four) On the way back, I heard a number of B.c. along the cornfield and Cross Creek Trail. It was very difficult to judge how many separate birds there were because most of them were singing only a few songs. I also heard the bird I heard earlier in the morning at Super Jen Trail and Cross Creek Trail, but it was far off and not singing consistently. On the way to these areas I went by the areas for birds B11, B12, and B15, and heard all three. At Becker's forest there were no B.C. singing, though I did see a pair feeding near the spring. In the "cut over grazed forest" area I recorded one of the two I had heard there on 19 September (B19) but the other bird was not obvious. I afterwards heard a bird singing from halfway be- tween B19 and where I had heard the other bird, so things were confusing. While I was recording B19 I thought I heard another bird singing from the general area of where I heard the other bird on 19 September, but I could never hear two birds at once again (part of the reason for that may have been that someone was shooting birds in the immediate area). In the afternoon I recorded a bird at the reservoir, a bird I think may be B15 due to its location. While recording I believe I could hear B11 in the background. 22 September Today was my day to get long series

I started off by easily getting (after recording an earlier 100 songs) a series of 100 from B12. I then went to B3 and got 100. From then on it was frustration however. I tried getting series of 100 from B14 (many times), B9, B1, B10, B13 and a B.C. from above lek IV (B6?). The birds were singing series of maybe 20 songs, or were inaccessible, or would fly off during the series and become inaudible. Besides the above birds I also heard B11. I went by and did not hear B16, B7, B6 (?), and B5. I went by the last two birds around noon though, and it was very hot. I heard a new (?) bird near Culec Creek and Loop Trail's meeting point. At 07:30 I took the path from the miniature golf course. I did not hear a bird in B13's location, but I did hear and record a B.C. about half way between that location and where I've heard a bird at the junction with the path to the airstrip. I then walked to the garbage dump and gravel pit, where I took down the tag for B16 but did not hear the bird (I started taking down all the tags today and not putting up tags for newly-recorded birds). I then walked down Middle Trail, when I heard B3, but not B7 or B9. On Bamboo Trail I recorded a series of 110 songs from B14 (or a bird at that location). I walked farther down Cross Creek Trail and heard two B.c. I was not sure if the one furthest to the NW was not B20, so I recorded the one further SE (B21). I believe that the bird to the NW was likely another bird, though. When I walked through the cornfield (after leaving Cross Creek Trail) I heard a bird which I recorded (B2?) In the background I could briefly hear a B.c. singing, a bird which might be B17. While returning to the hotel I passed by B10 and B8 and heard B10. 24 September Today I was trying to get series of birds (Red-eyed Vireos in particular), new species and Empidonax recordings, and not really concentrating on Basileuterus. I did hear B11, B12, B4, B5 (?), B10, B14 and B2, and did not hear B6, B9 and B1. I also heard the bird I've probably heard before near B6, but I did not record it. I recorded a series of these calls. Both birds, were giving these calls calling when I approached, and called from a few feet above me when I recorded them. They were moving around quite nervously, and became more frantic when I played back a few calls.
