A bed of Opuntia demardina grows above Forices. -- At Jackson's the grease word ceases and bastard elines begin, but they are few and small. - At Acties we reach fir and cedars and at camp fir and cedar predominates, tano oak is abundant but trees were dying (1). Cam from Jackson's up /seen at Quarry, 4. Colaptes cafer Jackson Camp nest and young in trees along road near mouth of can. 65 ft up. 5. Contopus richardsonii. Shot one near falls. May have been in Cam, 16 Siabia mexicana Cam. all way up canyon & cam just below mouth of canyon. Besides the above there were observed the follow- ing. Nummus, Goldfinches (low down) crest of Car. Results of an Expedition to Lytle Creek, Swartout Canyon, Soledad Pass and intervening Districts - Riverside, San Bernardino & Los Angeles Co's. Cal. By Ivan Rhodes & Harvey M. Hall, June. 21-28. 1894. Itinerary:- Left R. with cart and horse at 6:40 A.M. June 21. Noon at mouth of Lytle Cr. Canyon and reached Vosburgs, Middle Fork, at about 4:30. June 22 was spent in ascend- ing the stream and observations. June 23, early left via North Fork & Sheep's Can. for Upper Swartout, where we arrived about 2 P.M. June 24. To Mill, then via Jacksons & Ogden's to Shre maker's & back. June 25 Early passed Ogden's and "Lake", a small sink among the hills, to Rock Creek & Holmes, 2 mi below. Then through yuccas to Little Rock Creek and Barrel Springs - a little low tule bed 2 rode across, a small spring, 2 peach trees and a forsaken house - where we had dinner. Passed near Alpine & through Vincent to below Ravenna and camped. Vincent is on the summit while Ravenna in in Soledad Pass, in Santa Clara River, and S. P. R. R. June 26 passed Lang - a town of a store and hotel - and took dinner at mouth of pass. (Activation of several stores etc between Vincent and Ravenna). Passed Langus and Newhall. Pretty country with lakes. Went through cut and San Fernando & camped 3 mi above Los Angeles. June 27. Passed L.A. and S. Gabriel R. where we had lunch; then Orients, Spadra, Pomona, Ontario and reached S. Lucam only at 8: P.M. Rest of way home in the dark - June 28. Home at 1:30 A.M. - Distances - Home - to Vosburgs 23. To Neaths 15, to Rock Cr. 12. Springs 16. Acton 8. Ravenna 4. Lang, 9. Langus 11. M. Hall 3. L.A. 35. Route 60. Total = 196. Manganita - Nasvlium obtusom. Pinus Lambertina - Tolerable common about Agdusa - P - Fir.com. at summit. Green cedar, like that in Peris hills was com. from Shermanis to Languss Spenes Lake [illegible] Also a light colored-White-barked species was seen above Panel Spengis. Epithra nevaensis Yucca arborescens - First seen at Lake and then more abundantly till we got below Holmes, where it was abundant and 25ft. high. Oire oil at Vincent. O.cceata. Y. whippei. S. Bdo. Lake /at Little Rock Creek. Begins at Vincent and is scattering through the pass. Rare in S. Fernando Valley. Com. in Lower Swartout but distated near summit. Opuntia engelmannii - Not in passes, but abundant in S. Fernando Valley. O. bernardina Not seen eastnor north of Lang- where a little was seen. Abund in Fernando Valley, O. echinocarpa. Began near Rock Creek and became abundant below Holmes. Sometimes 5-ft. 01MATH high, very abundant for 2 miles below Vincent, when it died out, at Acton. O. basilaris. (?) A few clumps grew below Chydes in Lower Swartout. Reptiles - Phrynosoma blainvibii Little Rock Creek. Mammals.-

From Shumakers to Longus, Spencer—Lakeville Also a light colored white-barked species was seen above Barrel Springs, Eptedra newadineis Yucca arborescens—First seen at Lake and then more abundantly till we got below Holmes, where it was abundant and 25ft. high. Dies out at Vincent. y. whippei S. Reno. Lake, at Little Rock Creek. Begins at Vincent and is scattering through the pass. Rare in S. Fernando Valley. Seen in Lower Swartout but dictated near summit. Opuntia engelmannii Not in passes, but abundant in S. Fernando Valley. O. bernardina Not seen east nor north of Lang—where a little was seen. Abund. in Fernando Valley. O. echinocarpa Began near Rock Creek and became abundant below Holmes. Sometimes 5ft. high. very abundant for 2 miles below Vincent, when it died out at actor. O. basilaris (?) A few clumps grew below Clyde's in Lower Swartout. Reptiles—Phrynosoma blainvillii Little Rock Creek ! Mammals — Ovis canadensis Mt. Sheep. Reported in Arcamanga Mts. Jamias. Con. at Neaths'. T. leucurus reddish-brown back, white tail turned up and streaked sides—very small. Lower & Upper Swartout. Rock Creek to Soledad Pass Nowhere abund. except low Swartout and below Holmes. Spermophibus Rare at Little R. Cr. and in Soledad Pass. Abund from thence to R. zicle, abund. at Sangus, Sciurus fossier Seen near Neaths', Vepus cab One seen above Lake. b.... Ravenna. Birds — Those seen in Upper Swartout are marked (+) Bride seen this side of L. A. are but rarely noted. Much the same as one would expect. There in Swartout but only in "Lower-upper" Swartout
