Vegetation. Yucca arborescens begins above the Rose mine and get quite large near Morongo King which is much lower. Y. baccata(?) grows below mine. Opuntia echinocarpa, O. engelmannii and O. basilaris(?) grows between Morongo King and Rose mines. Pinar Onies reach nearly up to upper Lake on north side Raster Creek, Cactus Flat etc. Rose Mine. 5 stamp. 93 shocks per min., 850# each. Observations San Bernardino Mts. (Watermans Canyon to City Creek), Sept. 19-20-21, 1894. Itinerary. Left at 4.45 a.m. Stopped 45 min at S. Bdns. Top of ridge at noon where I stopped for lunch. On to Wilen's Mill in an hour. Camped. Sep. 20, hunted and went on over shortcut to the main road and little

Bear Valley (Talmadge & Flumig Mills which I left at 2.1 P.M. arriving at Highlands mills at 5.30 P.M. Left at 2.00 P.M. Sep. 21, arrived home at 8. P.M. While on a short cut road the horse 'smashed' the harness while I was after Sciurus, but we drove to summit of Strawberry Peak all the same. Had a pleasing experience with return trip tickets and old roads. San Bedus to Toll house (Waterman) about 6 mi. To Summit 7 mi., to Wilson's 2 mi., to Little Bear (by short cut) 5 or 6 mi., to Highland Mills 8 @ 10 miles. Altitude, Wilson's about 5,000 Straw- berry Pk. 6,100, Little Bear about 5,000. Mocking-bird. Mimus Polyglottus 703, 1891 Jan. 15 These birds are beginning to sing, I have heard several. First not later than '10. 5/23 Took 2 sets. 5/30 Several sets. Jul. 14 Found nest of several ygs. just hatched and one egg. Aug 6 Saw a young bird which was able to fly without trouble, near the above nest. 1893. Feb. 23 The first I have heard sing, was observed today. Mar. 28 While sitting on our porch a mocker flew into the potato-vine and so! There was her nest right above the doorway. She went on arranging the material not in the least afraid of me. Apr. 25 The above nest has young birds in it.

""" 510 Brewers Blackbird. Scoleophagus cyanoccephalus. 1891 Jants. Have not seen any for some Time and think they have gone South. will be found in order. 1894. West Robin. (continued from p. 7) dec. 7. While at Spring Brook Today I saw perhaps a hundred Robins in a couple of hours and I have seen and heard quite a few even on the meza since they first arrived (my record is Nov. 11). Much more common than the were in the winters of '92 and '93. Those winters were dry. It is now raining and has been off and off for 3 days. Can this mean anything? See Belding. 1896 Nov. 22 Saw me at Winchester, foggy.

"Other Notes" (continued from pp.98.) Dec.15. Spent a few hours at Spring Brook. Dec.22. Ed. Heller called at 8.a.m. and we started, with the cart for Box Spr. Mt. Went up the old road toward the house. On the way we saw what Heller said was a yg. Golden Eagle. I hardly think so, for his identity was based up on the supposition that Buzzards are not found here in winter. We reached summit at 9:30 and hunted over the small valley. Saw a pair of Jays and N. got me. After dinner N. Shot 2 Golden Crown Sparo we new to both of us, and while looking for more I shot a Wrent it also new to me. This made us feel good and N. got another Golden Crown. They were all beauties. At first N. tried to make me believe that the Wrentit was a yg. Towhee but

That was soon knocked in the head by the white eyes and long, graduated tail. Besides, what would y-y towhee be doing in pairs this time a year? He also thought that the Golden Crows were Gambels, at first, probably because he was looking for them. He thinks that he saw a Rufous Crow, at least it had a bright brown or red crown patch and he says it was not Chipping now, Interned. He also shot a Bell's Spar. We passed down the E. side of the mountain and when above Box Spr. we saw 4 Green-wing'd Teal in a small pond, but could not get them. Arrived home after dark. Dec 25. Christmas, Spring Brook. Shot Killdeer, Wesper Sparrow and Am. Dickert. Saw Cassin's King Bird v.e. (Continued on pp. 17)

Andubonis Warbler. (?) 656. (Dendroica auduboni) 1891 Jan. 19. Saw one by the dump yards today. Jan. 27 These birds are Pol. Can., I hear of seeing occasionally. Regulus calendula? 1894 Dec. 7 This fall I have discovere ed that what I have been carelessly calling Prairie Dustin are really Aud. Warblers. Hence past notes on Spining prince belong here. Last Summer I took a beautiful full plumaged S. Andubonis in Sugarloaf Canyon, San Antonio Mts. (+-?) and this led to my discovery of the error. (See pp. 30.) Jan. 12. 1895 The specimen mentioned above is quite different from the winter specimens (as No. 173).

They have been abundant at the dam and above in Spring Brook ever since the dam was put in a couple of years ago. {and} The chin is pure yellow, throat {warty} black and streak across breast yellow. Back streaked with black and some white. More yel. crown. Top of neck lead color or bluish not brown. Large white wing patch. L. 5.88, St. 9.00 Wg.2.95, tl.2.30. S. andubari. "Other Notes." (Continued from pp 13.) 1894 Dec. 26. Spent a few hours at Spr. Brook, especially at the pond at its sourc where I shot a ? Regulua caludula and a ? Vermilion Flycatcher, (Shir # 190 and 189). Dec. 31. 8:15 P.M. Today I thought I would end up the old year with a few new birds so I saddled Bilhi and rode around Spring Brook and to the river but saw hardly anything except Thickers after left the brook. Along the river I saw W. Yel, Thrush, Song Spar. Gnat C., Audubon's W. old Pereee - That's all! On the way back I stumbled onto a pair of ducks on an inland' pond but they were too quick for me. So if I want to end the year in glory I shall have to point back to the last week or so to the

May 30th June 2. 2nd to by the creek Stewartout Antelope Valley Sta. Clara R. Y.C. with Rhodes June 21-28, 3rd S. Jacinto Mt. with Sam Y.C. Jul. 29. Aug. 4th Bear Val. & Rice Mine Aug 11-19 and 5th Wilsons to Highland Mill Sep. 19-21. Besides this I rummaged the country from Peris to S.G. Lake Y.C. I have added 23 spe to my list since May 24. Some good ones, some other wise (as white hump Shy de), - The Cooper Smith. Club is progressing. During they fall I recd. an invitation from Foster to become a member of the A.C.V. but I refused on account of "paternal interference". 8.30 P.M. Time to turn in for the last time this year, so. Good bye 1894.

19 Long Tail'd Chat. Icteria virens longicauda 683a June2 Took my first set of eggs. 1891. nest in an elderbush, about 2 1/2 ft. from ground. Bird clearly seen, 4 eggs, fresh. Saw one in our peartree today. Identity quite certain.

Arizona Hooded Oriole. Icterus cucullatus nelsoni 505a 23 742. 1894 Kren-Vit, Pallid. Chamaea fasciata henshawi. Dec. 22. Shot on near the summit of Bordspring Mountain. It was in company with another and hopped from the trail into a bush, where I secured it. my first specimen of this species. #185 1895- a pair closely observed at Spring on W. side of Bor. Spr. Mt. near the base.

Bullock's Oriole. I. bullocki 508 1891 3/28 Shot one today & saw several other 5/28 Took a net in Sycamore & found hundreds(?) of yg. 1892, 3/26 Saw 2 in Box Spr. Can. and heard others. 4/27 2 new nets in Sycamore, no eggs. 1893. 3/29 Saw a 5 in our Aspen trees. 1894. July 25 I witnessed a fracas in an apricot Tree between two 5's and a yg. & House Trick. A 5 bullocki was near but took no part in the proceedings. After considerable fuss and noise on the part of the Orioles, the limit fell to the ground. On picking it up I found that it was headless, the head having been completely severed near the body. The Oriole then left. Cause - probably apricots.

25 Brewer's Black-bird. 510 Scalophagus cyancephalus 1891 Janis Have not seen any for some time and think they have gone South - (?) 1894. See Common. 517a California Purple Finch, Carduelis purpurientus californicus. 1892. Feb. 7. Saw several below cold-storage feeding. 2+0? 1894 Sept. 20. Took one at Wilson's mill (Pk. 7)

Apr 27 Syc. Can. Nest and six eggs, nearly incub. uniform in size coloration & microbatai. May 4 nest +5 eggs. 2 with 4 or 5 spots & 3 with no spots. Streaked towards small end, allee same woodpecker. 5 Another nest of binback orchd. 1893. Mar 29 One eats oranges - June 25 On the 25th found nest in our laurel bush- 3 eggs- broke one over side of nest. On the 26th 3 eggs again. Today only 2 but warm this A.M. 1894. - And Icterus bullockii - see page 18. May 4 Nest of 4 ygs just hatched +1 egg in Rose bush. 17 Birds flown from abar evidently same time ago.

Mar.24 Saw one carrying building material. Townsend's(?) Fox Sparrow, 585a Muscerella iliaca unalaschcensis. 1894. Jan. about 10. Saw one sit on the prop pile. Jan.28. While sitting near the front porch he came up for water, he was quite fearless and I had a good look at him as he would hop up and rest after each swallow. Fox y red of ug. & il. prom- inent.

36 Golden Crowned Sparrow 557. (Zonotrichia coronata) 1894. Dec.22. Ed. Heller and I secured 3 specimens on Box Spring Mt, near the summit. Mine is skin #184. There were more in the bush but they were so shy that we could not get them! The only way to find them was to listen for their modest hisping chip or peep and then follow in the direction of their voice. They stayed in the grease-wood bush, zone 6-10 ft. high.

When seen I wrote maple leaf throat, blue, breast brown, belly white, wings white marked; - Compare with Crows & there can be no mistake. Also blue above tail noticed.

Warbling Vireo. 627 Vireo garrulus. 1894. Shot one July 30, in Strawberry Valley Ident.-C. K. except, white eye-ring instead of superciliary line and also at least one white wing bar. # 1465th July 31. found a nest 2.2 ft. up in an oak. Suspended from twigs like V. bellii pusillus but not so symmetrical, compact and neat. Fine grass fibres and a little wooly substance diam.outside 4 x 3, inside 2.60 depth outside 3.00 inside 1.75 inches. Contained 2 ygs. One dropped to the ground; old bird flew close to it and by passing from bush to bush led the young away from me. The fledg. is description of ? taken at the time: "White below, sides with yellow eye- ring white. above olive ye wings barred".

I found 2 nests of this bird. 1st near Middle Fork. 12 ft up in an alder. Placed on the underside of a branch horizontal. Near aeroleh, but not touching it. Nest of leaves, grass covered with webs, presented a whitish appearance much like the branch. Flat. Diam. 2.25- Diam. 1.50. Depth 1.75 and 1.00 inches. 34g. 2nd In another canyon along a road. 12 ft up on a branch. Composed of twigs &c as before and looked like #1. 53 Rock Wren. Salpinctes obsoletus 7/15 Saw several today, on Sugar Loaf. 2/21-'91 1894. Oct. 20 '92. Common in the hills. Collected in the bottoms were Little Flycatchers (Empidonax pusillus). Notes of these in mls. is a single Swee or sweer. — No other note heard. Can. in Lytle Creek Canyon. (Nest #2 was a new nest but) (contained no eggs.) June 28-29. Heard one in our yard several times.

Feathers were common about the spring and a C. Bush-Mt's nest, built near was heavily lined with feathers of this quail. They seemed rather tame & evidently haven't haven't been hunted much. American Barn Owl, Strix bralincola 365 -1891- Apr. 10 Found a nest in tree in Ryier bottoms. About 9 ft. from ground in stump. Hole nearly as large around as my body & about 5 ft. deep contained 3 eggs. went to it after-ward and the eggs were gone.

Vermilion Flycatcher, Pyrocephalus rubineus mexicanus. 1894 Dec. 4 Norb Stebbins shot me near dam by knapps, which I secured. (#183) The first I know of having been taken since 1884. Dec.26. I took a f near the dam at head of brook (#189). It acted like any other flycatcher, catch- ing insects along the brook and lighting on bushes and tall weed- stems along the bank.

Outside of sticks and stems, then grasses and quite heavily lined inside with mud. Whole nest fully 1ft. square. (Perhaps Magpie?) Calif. Jay. aphelocoma californica. Aug3. Saw 6. at Eden Springs. Oct20 Saw 1. at Springs first east of Santa Rosa Mtns. 7 mi. West of Peniz. Dec.22. Saw 2 at Summit of Box Springs Mts. Keller shot one of them.

Mar 26 Have been to Highland for a week or so. But few birds were seen. 761a, 75b at 767 heard one of each. But found my 1st eggs of the season, set t 622b. Incub. begun. 26 Hunted around the lower part of the river bottoms. Saw one 620. Shot me 508 also found Cala. Screech owl nest, 1 egg. 28 Hunted around the upper part of bottoms & found 2 new nests of 397. A Long Ear went off her nest no eggs. Barn Owl went out where there Apr had been Spu. Hawks, no eggs. 2 Went to same nests after work. Screech Owls nest only are egg as I pulled her off. Before I guess she had left it, so I took the egg. 30 Not much collecting days. (Packing)

June 12 Geo. I went along the brook and collected a set of Lang. N. Chart. & W. Wood Pewee's several sets of 530 and others. Arrivals, Autumn 1876. (Oct. 9 in Spanish Run Hills) Oct. 12 A cloudy morning, and getting tired of work I took the field glasses and lay around our barnyard. There were quite a number of siskins in the peppers, then an Intr. Sparrow came around, careful to keep in the dry. While watching a Phabe, a Junco hopped up in front of him. I soon discovered a band of sparrows in the

grass just as the juneo flew into a leafless tree above them, his white beak presenting a contrast to his black head. By this time we had received Calls from a sapsucker, flicker, black bird, towhee and a passing blue bird, and it was time to resume work. == 1892. == Jan.30 Have done no work on Smith and have no observations to record. Feb.9 The rain has cleared up and birds are out in full blast. Robins are common. 15 Bur Owls have nested and are watching their nests. Mar.15 Went over the bottoms caught a zorech in nest, nregs. Several hollows with flesh chicks. Got fried, also fried, by the man they call Smith. Apr.4 Have been to Perris collected. eets 13, 17 of Growl. Also Horn Lark.

84. Apr 27 Sergeant I had a good time up Sycamore today. Spent all day & collected, R.R. Oak Goldf. Oak, Thrasher, Least Oriole etc. also spotted new-nested Can. Wren and 2 nests Shw. Hawk, 2 eggs each with green seta co-modifying 385+294a. Came back via little Sycamore. May 2 To the brook: found nests that were too new & nests that were too old but could not strike a happy medium. Set 394a 4/5 & 529 1/4 3 Geo. & I spent the afternoon in dye. Went to nest of Can. Wren, slipped up quietly, put my hand over the hole and brought it down over the nest, to catch the bird. My hand struck air, then fuzz. Guess Wilbur took them before. No. 9 Spent an hour some near Mt. Tournants where the canal crosses the road. Bright and sunny and lots of birds. 3 or 4 Snakes were squawking around and me Spn. Hawk was ok, while Some Partridge call from the bottoms and a cardinal is heard in the hedge. Then a Robin flys by and soon the trees are full of them and the later mediates warble forth their song, from some thicket and the Crow and Flickers call from the bottoms. Then a flock of Bluebirds fly past and a Meadowlark sings when a couple of Towhees spot in sight them dive in the top of young gum tree and a Junco flys into that bush. At the same time a Goldfinch is heard and a Dark Spn. is seen. As we leave we observe a Rock Wren and Shrike as well as Say's Black Pewee making 19 varieties. What a difference from the one taken at Paris!

At Springbrook-Knappe old crossing a hawk, unknown, flew up and around a Kingfisher who didn't like to be disturbed.

"Results of a Biological Reconnaissance of Upper Mill Creek Canyon, San Bernardino Co., Cal." May 30-31, 1894. By Geo. R. & H. M. Hall, Route - Starting from Riverside at 6 A.M. we passed through E.R. and "Gages Canyon", then past Hunts and Old S. Edio to Redlands. From here we went through Mentone and then up Mill Creek. Here the pass is a mile or more broad and some 4 miles above N. joins with Potato Can. We reached Skinner's soon after noon. By "mouth of canyon" is meant when the canyon proper begins, some 5 miles above Mentone and about 4 below Skinner's. "Drury" is a mile or so up the canyon. Forcees and Jacksois are ranches in the canyon, the latter 3 mile above Skinner's. Acker's is 7 mile above S. and camp one mile above this. Falls is 2 1/2 mile above Acker's. On the home trip we went up Potato Canyon and down the yuccipa, up San Timoteo and near Moreno, then home via Bolding. It was dark after leaving Moreno, hence no moles were about there. Vegetation - Skinner's to Jacksois - 6 ft grease wood in canyon. Quies on south range and yuccas and brush on north hills. A bed of Opuntia Bernardina grows above Forcees. At Jacksois the grease wood ceases and bastard pines begin, but they are few and small. - At Acker's we reach fir and cedars and at camp fir and cedar predominates, live oak is abundant but trees were dying. Sugar pine was common near the falls. A single chinomule was seen about calf

Something jumped up and down again till I could not see whether I had any game or not and as he was several rods off and the intervening space was filled with a forbidding compound (Earth + H2O = Mud), I decided not to investigate. I then walked up the brook till I was stopped by a side winder when I crawled under the tree to escape from the rain which had been stead- ily growing wetter and wetter. I tried to build a fire but the wet stuff wouldn't burn so at 9.30 I went back to the dam. This time I got the start of the doves by creeping up behind the dam and when I raised up I saw a half dozen swimming

Results of an Expedition to Lytle Creek, Swartout Canyon, Soledad Pass and intervening Districts - Riverside, San Bernardino & Los Angeles Co's. Cal. By Ivan Rhodes & Harvey M. Hall, June. 21-28. 1894. Itinerary:- Left R. with cart and horse at 6:40 A.M. June 21. Noon at mouth of Lytle Cr. Canyon and reached Vosburgs, Middle Fork, at about 4:30. June 22 was spent in ascend- ing the stream and observations. June 23, early left via North Fork & Sheep's Can. for Upper Swartout, where we arrived about 2 P.M. June 24. To Mill, then via Jacksons & Ogden's to Shre maker's & back. June 25 Early passed Ogden's and "Lake", a small sink among the hills, to Rock Creek & Holmes, 2 mi below. Then through yuccas to Little Rock Creek and Barrel Springs - a little low tule bed 2 rode across, a small spring, 2 peach trees and a forsaken house - where we had dinner. Passed near Alpine & through Vincent to below Ravenna and camped. Vincent is on the summit while Ravenna in in Soledad Pass, in Santa Clara River, and S. P. R. R. June 26 passed Lang - a town of a store and hotel - and took dinner at mouth of pass. (Activation of several stores etc between Vincent and Ravenna). Passed Langus and Newhall. Pretty country with lakes. Went through cut and San Fernando & camped 3 mi above Los Angeles. June 27. Passed L.A. and S. Gabriel R. where we had lunch; then Orients, Spadra, Pomona, Ontario and reached S. Lucam only at 8: P.M. Rest of way home in the dark - June 28.
