are not flat or incurved Possibly Cosmos but obviously much smaller than C. sulphureus, Car- 408 & B.M.Q.C.P.769 (which is only yellow cosmos in these two books) but agreeing with disc as underlined. Perhaps a case of deterioration as in the garden cosmos which I have seen run out into low plants v small fls at home. But pos. Bidena ferulaefolia D.C. B.M.Q.C.P.769 as fl & B from Jolna studied 3-20-29 has many similar points. Berbera jamesoni, x on collected 8in x4in, upper surface dark bright green & finely pubescent with single straght hairs not very close to gettle) on petiolaris. Lower bases. Anther ring notched at tip but not cleft to fallen sacs. Anthers long tailed. Style 1, stigma 2 lobed. Each tip of corolla lobe reflexed somewhat lifted Disk flo seem infertile. Ray flo also bilabiate with 2 tiny filamentous lobes in front. These 2 lobes not quite as deeply divided from each other as from the ship. Stamens & 5 filaments but no anthers. Stigma lobes smaller than in disk flo. But rays fertile. achenes pubescent. Papery & many bristles & recurved forming tufts. Disk asept., 3-21-29 Plants preserved at Agrist, L with downward curled lobes like Freethanther.

Ovary superior 2 1/2mm long, 2 celled with 2 ovules on axile placenta, the division bet. cells being in anterior-posterior line of style acute than filaments. Beyond a 2-lobed thickening of style, white projects slightly beyond anthers but not exerted. Corolla in bud has posterior lobes outside of anterior ones. Perhaps (partially) Set Deroiflularaceae Twigs collected for study have scattered hairs & what seems (20x) like porrect glandular dots. 4-15-29 Studied again. Europe seeds are strong & show signs of seed being roughened up simply.

Drfl. cynae (compound cynes) Calyx naked at base, inflated 1/2 in diam. v slightly narrowing toward top, almost the high, glabrous, planconvex, nerves not conspicuous, 10 principal ones v often intermediate ones. Teeth 5, broad based, broad acute at tip, 1/8 in high. Calyx margin whitish, short-ciliate (20X), each tooth with dark tip (20X). Petals 5 on long claws which at base for distance of 2 mm unite with base. Stamens around the v with the stalk that supports ovary. Petalos 3/4 in overall, claw widening toward top v lobed on each side at base of blade, 3-nerved. Blade 1/8-3/8 in 1/2 in wide, deeply cleft, margin somewhat serrag not quite entire, with 1/2 small lobes at base but petal not created. Blade rose tinged at tips v on back. Veins on back greenish. Stamens 10, underdeveloped. 5 alt with petals the bases of filaments adherent to claws for 2 mm. 5 off petala filaments adherent to claw 1mm above point where it becomes free. Styles 3, 7/8 in long, separate to base, stigmatic at expanded tips and inc very narrow line down inside to base. Ovary 1/2m, glabrous v shining, dark purple v green. Ovules many, on central placenta which seem joined joined to wall in slices. Orules reticulated. Flopen at throat as that ovary is visible.

Blanely v.vein. serrate, reticulate. Softly pubescent above & beneath. Petiole 1 in., pubescent. Upper lvs 1-1 1/4 in similar, petiole 1/2 in. Infl 8 in., whorls 1-3 1/4 in or less apart with 9-8 flo (counting all buds) in whorl. Each whorl subtended by 2 white, deciduous bracts. Bracts 7/16 x 3/16 in obovate, lanceolate, long acuminate at apex, narrowed to base 1/8 in broad, pubescent above, glabrous beneath, long ciliate veined. Calyx green 3/4 in long {man} serrate or blunt acuminate 3 lobed, pubescent (looks glandular pubescent but this may be from pollen) glabrous inside, entire. Corolla pure white, 1 1/2 in long with

3-28-29 Ligustrum coriaceum, Cav. p. 290 x BM J.C.P. 594. Fl. Srixthlands. Shrub. Twig collected. Barks silvery brown with conspicuous white, wart-like lenticels which are split down the middle (20x). Lvs. opp., oval, 1/2 x 1 in., very thick, entire rounded at apex v base, punctate with depressed dots above more thickly so beneath. Petioles 3/6 in. Lf. yellowgreen above, light below, edges revolute. Veins depressed on-, lateral veins being few far apart and at wide angle with mid-rib. No lateral visible or only scarcely so beneath. Fluindersar panicule 1/2 in long. Radius fimbrial, else pubescent & * angled, or perhaps merely about pedicels x Fls sessile in groups of 1-4 each group subtended by a white, brownish pinkish tipped, ciliate bract 2 mm long, leaves lanceolate but very concave v not sharp pointed. Each fl. bracted by 1 (or perhaps more) minute bract. All these bracts fugaceous. Calyx x* 2mm long, very shallowly v offuscely 4-tothed. Corolla tube 5 mm to lobes 4+ mm. The twig collected has its infls not determined (the tips seen withered) but in axil of 1st. lf below tip. Another twig collected had 1 fls. determined, ovaryfic 7mm high x 5 mm diam, 2-celled, with 2 seeds in each cell. Fls apiculate at apex, with persistent calyx at base & * below the flattened lobes of which is a stout stalk 1/10mm which is either calyx tube or pedicel could this be L. japonicum, though ? Corolla lobes distinctly valvate (see B.M J.C.P. 592 which says Ligustrum they are imbricate) the reflexed lobe open fl still showing the concave tips. Corolla thick tho outside of its lobes punctate.

Aren twigs closely pubescent. 2 scales on them, very young twiggy from the thin edge of calyx lobes ciliate, otherwise glabrous. Calyx lobes petals 5 in 2 buds studied. Ovary 3-celled, 5-9-29 Fl Southlands 4-11-29 Southlands, shrub 4ft. Trunk brown smooth not unlike Pimenta. 3-28-29 Mrs. Allen Smith saw the same fl. like plant found in seed in Jan. v pressed is "Mexican Dew" flowers. N: Cleas exoticae Mullays p 202 BMJCP444 "Citronella a Bartdoschanel," a shrub pointed out by Mrs. Allen Smith. (Could this be L. of the microniera Solms, p3/2) Not collected, no see 4-11-29 "Erect" 4-11-29 Twig from some shrub (assumed broad) collected No fls or fr. Shrub not more than 5 ft of that. Bark pale. Twigs slender, green, rough with warts, pubescent with short tips, card arching hairs. Lvsalt to 3-28-29 1¾" x½" in, broadly obovate, cuneate at base, rounded above middle the upper part very indistinctly crenulate, the lower entire acute at a apex but the very tip is blunt glabrous above, minutely pubescent beneath (reviewed on 20k) of glands dots on both sides of limns. Color ? crenulated fl not very strong. 5-9-29 Same plant, of light green in sun with color.(Is this the same as seen at Harrington House 4-25-29 which Mrs. Tuggdesk as having edible fruit berries) see 5-13-29. Lvs alt., pinnate with 5 more alternate, which are all sprue appearance, see pbs. 3-28-29 Southlands No fls or fr. Low edging plant grey with spody brownish. Right lts stems with red alt branches very long. Lvs thick almost brittle, largest at apex alt and seemingly 4-15-20 very close together.

Pedicels 1/4 in. Pedicels v closed calyx at this stage dark rose-red. 3 pairs of bracts at base of calyx. Calyx tube top-lobed, lobes 4, the 2 outer just touching and, the one inner overlapping the other. Petals 4, intricate in rotation (not separately). Petals orbicular at this stage pink fringed at edges, on rim of calyx tube. Calyx lobes & petals punctate. Stamens very many in several rows. In rim of calyx tube just below petals filaments free. Anthers borne dors. slice longitudinally. Style simple rising from a glabrous depression its apex pointed v showing no definite stigma. Ovary 2 small cells rather low in fleshy calyx tube. Ovules many on surface of somewhat semi-spherical, parietal axillary placentae which lift out entire covered with ovules. Lvs not at all aromatic when crushed. This is probably Myrtaceae. Could it be Jambos jambos, Millsp or J. malaccensis, DC p 267 See BMGCP 535. Edge of lf revolute so that each tooth forms little pocket beneath. Each primary v some secondary teeth and pointed.
