"Sariakhat etc. (continued)
Dr. from York on presented to shells dip less
toward the sea, becoming, as seen with the plan from the east,
nearly horizontal; except for a slight rise going westward.
Before reaching Aria Karnat the dark series, well ex-
pored, is cut from sea level to the base of the frontal ter-
raee - on 1000' thick, perhaps 12 or 1300', with a
ferruginous, sandy zone overlying yellowish brown, about
75-100' thick - at about 1000 from tide and perhaps
150' below the highest exposed beds. The complete sec-
tion is not seen at any point.
Inferiorly, however, the series is one of marked
homogeneity though rock varies slightly in shades of gray.
The dark clayey beds break in small irregular fragments, the
weathering is with slight efflorescences, the surface re-
sembling dirty and frozen mud or loose strong oolite.
The streams also carry a white deposit.
As one approaches Aria Karnat a basalt flow rises
and forms the perpendicular cliff (300±) between which
and the rear hills, all of basaltic breccia, lies the little
picturesque village. These basalts are apparently stratified,
with sometimes X - folded and intricately irregular.
The cores are of a greenish rusty color and are mostly bre-
cia (often containing large angular blocks of basalt
and other material.
