Aug 31-92 Tuesday Atanualuk. My finger is swelling more and more and gives me great pain. I am unable to do any work and remain in the tent all day. The day is a fine one with clear sunshine. Here I am when I should be doin' work, unable to do any, and what the future only bring cannot yet be seen. I am the cork thinks that what is called a seals finger which the men sometimes get in connection with seal catching on the ice about Newfoundland. Mr. White continues to work hard and if it were not for him the trip to Greenland would not have proved a success. He is also suffering considerably from small pox on his hands but more particularly his ears. He is very sensitive to sun burn and small lictus form on his ears shut fail quick. These go on festering until the outer edge of both ears are sore. Mr. Stickney continues more and in gray fat, White saw many ptarmigan.
