abroad the vessel by 1 A.M. and that the Hope will sail away shortly after. They would like to remain a day or two days but this will not be granted them. My hand gives me little pain, but is a burden nevertheless. Pass flow fully from the sore in the back of the hand. Autumn colors have come in last stage. Hope leaves James at 2 A.M. A fine night. Sep. 13 Monday. At sea. About two o'clock I heard the anchor being aground and various voices of the Porter party. This morning I learn that we left Cape Haze at 2 A.M. The sea is smooth while the sun is somewhat obscured by a haze. I got up for breakfast and shortly after have my hand dressed. The swelling is going down rapidly and the open places are running less than heretofore. The worst appears to be over.
