August 2-1897 Baffin Land.
Taken from Whites diary:
Hope discharging stars for Janesen. Brighter for
morning. S and Dr went up valley east of ridge near
station, walked to crest, crossed ridge to fiord, went
around fiord and up m higher summit 930'. This side
of second fiord and red mountain. Saw three flocks
of ducks, 1 goose, numerous swillions whist were
very tame, several gulls and ptarmigan in this plain.
The latter birds were tame as to permit storming them.
Many snow tanks and small glaciers. Red snow.
Tramped about 11 or 12 miles. Reached vessel soon
after six P.M. Cold at night.
Red Mountain overtly highest knib ascended
is of red shale (upper part) on edge and followed by green
ish grey rock of soft nature. Had no time to climb
it. John went far out at 4.45 and occasionally had
to stop and ask me return to ship, but I carried
the load.
