August 5-1897 From White
About six o we find ourselves at our friends
in Augustifken. Five clear, smooth water, mul-
titude of water fowl, chiefly lag-downs. In rear
m craft, deep fjords, snow caps and snow banks
(glaciers) streaming down sides. Too far away to
see inland ice-sheet. My hold craft japsed out
flecked with patches of ice.
August 7-1897: From White
Before one sees the village of Godhaven, one
sees towering cliffs of basalt rising near water in series
magnificent stratification. On going turn, but after
lay sail one steer straight for rocky walls, along
cleft fjords and are sail in narrow opening to right
and see a few buildings (God Haven) to the far left.
Flags floating from Inspectors residence and from
Brennan's store and house. Other buildings of Es-
quimaw types (rock and turf) with round windows, doors
etc. Salute with guns in front as anchor drops and
flag dipped.
