August 5-1897 From White About six o we find ourselves at our friends in Augustifken. Five clear, smooth water, mul- titude of water fowl, chiefly lag-downs. In rear m craft, deep fjords, snow caps and snow banks (glaciers) streaming down sides. Too far away to see inland ice-sheet. My hold craft japsed out flecked with patches of ice. August 7-1897: From White Before one sees the village of Godhaven, one sees towering cliffs of basalt rising near water in series magnificent stratification. On going turn, but after lay sail one steer straight for rocky walls, along cleft fjords and are sail in narrow opening to right and see a few buildings (God Haven) to the far left. Flags floating from Inspectors residence and from Brennan's store and house. Other buildings of Es- quimaw types (rock and turf) with round windows, doors etc. Salute with guns in front as anchor drops and flag dipped.
