Sep. 18 Saturday Maybe off Belle Isle Early this morning the ships crew sea saw bottom but due to the fog no land in In considerable danger. Our course was at once changed about nine I heard the fog horns off Labra- dor. We are steaming very slowly. Later the fog clears away and we pass safely through the straits. About two A.M. Newfoundland can be seen and a steamer awaiting for the St Lawrence. My pains is dressed as usual. Little progress seems to be made, Sep. 19 Sunday Western Off Newfoundland. We stand all day along the west coast of Newfoundland. In the afternoon the wind freshens in our front and slow progress is being made. I am in my bunk most of the day. Packed my trunk in the afternoon
