1936 Friday November 13th Took the nine A.M. train from New Haven to New York to see Mr. Timm. Put up as usual at the Murray Hill Hotel but in the first time in 30 years found the place full. However they as-sured me that later on they would have a room, and got into it at 3.30 P.M. Walked down Park Ave to 32nd and then over to Fifth Ave, and north on it to about 60st. Had lunch at the hotel. At 1:15 walked up Lexington Ave to 54 to call on Mr. Timm. Found he had no written letter as got from Dr. Conners. Reason he had moved and my sample got to him while Timm was telephon-ing. Timm will report to one by mail. If I cannot call again on Timm to - tomorrow because he is going to Princeton game at Princeton. Timm said it would be the first vacation in ten years, a full

Day. Anne has gotten just little from Timm, and I have about decided to have myself regularly examined by some doctor at New Haven. Then visited the Times tool show in Rockefeller Center. Such a jam of women I have never seen before. At least 90% were women and one of ten from flies around a molasas tartell. Got back to Murray Hill Hotel about 4 P.M. and remained here for Friday. A warm sunny day, the reason why so many women where out to see the Times and themselves.

Saturday Nov. 14 1936 Spent 1/2 hours at the Automobile Show in the Grand Central on Lexington Ave. An interesting show and especially the Travelogues or Trailers, The latter an exposition as the autos and as I feel one has to live in very cramped quarters. To live in them is promise of a warm climate. In the afternoon rode me bus to Riverside Drive. Sunday Nov. 15 1936 Read the Sunday Times, then took a short walk and headed to Murray Hill Hotel. Paid my room rent and then on my way home on the Bostonian at noon. Had dinner at the Lawn Club.

Saturday December 12-1936 New Haven, Conn. again on my way to Laddell and Florida. Left on the Gulf Coast Limited at 11:57 a.m. Dentan took me in his car to the depot. I am in sleep 1/4, have duf, and expect to be in Laddell Tm anow at 3.40 P.M. Yesterday afternoon I had a letter from Secretary Burke asking me to be at the Cincinnati meeting of the G.S. Co. During the evening I got into the spirit of accepting. Then this morning I gave the letter to Miss Lo Dane to read and wait on while I count to her end to get my late trip. Then I got back we talked over the invitation, and it soon became apparent that she would advise not to accept. Partly the main reason was my outlining what I would say but the main reason was the difficulty I had had on at the banquet table. When I told her of a very little gift to Dentan he said it would never do for me to be away. So this I would say if any influence in Mexico the Cin-

Cincinnati talent rights, I intended to say it in a humorous way, but Mrs. LeDrew would have none of it, in any form. So I decided not to accept, and if write a long letter to Billy declining the m. Petition. We left New York at 1.45 P.M. Rain in New Haven during the first three days. Here in New Jersey it is grey and damp. We leave Port Philadelphia at 3.30 P.M. Still grey and damp and very smoky. Did not even stop here to patronize passengers. Arrived at Baltimore at 5 P.M. Less rain and cloudy here. Temperature still in New N. Harm, but at none was it cold today. Left Washington at 5.30 P.M. Left at 7 P.M. Retired at 8 P.M.

En Route Sunday Dec 13-1936. Up at 6.40 and had breakfast at 7.30. Left Larama at at 7.45 A.M. Heavily clouded morning with no sunshine at all. One terare dark mornings of Florida, But we are in Georgia and not Florida! We are in Jacksonville Fla, depart at 11 A.M. Still dark, wind from N.E. the rain quarter. Leave at 11.35 A.M. At Sanford at 2.10 P.M., Sunshine and for the past 1 1/2 hours, At Winter Park 2.40 P.M., Sunshine. Orlando 2.53, Kissimmee 3.45 Lakeland at 4.10 P.M. instead of 3.40. The hotel people await the station look- ing for me = Lakeland Terrace Hotel. Have 911 on the ninth floor and a grand outlook to the south.

December 14-1936 J. Ray Arnold of the oil well at Brrrland, Fla. met me by accident in the Lakeland Terrace Hotel. He said he well was down to 5740 feet. He showed a piece of a rod 30 fathers [illegible] near this depth. December 24-1936 Professor Longwell, wife and their six month old girl baby dispeed in, and asked him to stay one night. This guy did. This day they autored from Miami = 340 miles. The day before they drove to Miami from St. Peters- town. They left at 9 A.M. for St. Peter's town.

December 26-1936 Brevard Fla. J. Ray Arnold called to introduce me to Miss Mc Slammer of the Univ. of Alabama. She is a Jalem trojpit- a graduate of Johns Hopkins, and is on her way to the G.S.A. meetings at Cin- cinnati. Arnold said he drill was down to 5867 feet, and he showed me a large lump partly white with what looked like an irregular discomfit daring what mythral glauwhite on its surface. Miss Mc Slammer said Terrell had gone through Ripley and Eutaw which she determined on the basis of fossils. Arnold thought they might now be en- tering the Tuscalossa.

Lakeland Fla. Friday January 29-1937. Finished the chapter in Volume II on New York, it is the standard for consultation for the Old, Del. Meronian. It's a very long chapter, the most detailed one in the works. Sunday Jan. 31-1937 Purton Shittenden and daughter turned up at the Lakeland Tenau Hotel. She did not like this hotel and as they left as well later for the New Florida. Lord, she is now contented about as well as can be made for her. They left for our Starn on March first at 1:10 P.M.

Lakeland, Feb. 26 - 1937 Friday Mrs Rose M. Thomas turned up this morning at 11.10 and put up at the New Florida. Jnes met them not I th afternoon. She has as a companion a lady from Louisville Ky. On Saturday morning Feb 27 I en- gaged a car for two hours to show Mrs Thomas the environs of Lakeland. On Sunday I had the two ladies to dinner at the Lakeland Terrace. March 14 - 1937 Sunday, By bus went to St. Petersburg for diversion. Had a quiet sleep. Left at 9 A.M., got to St. P. 10.40. Returned at 3 P.M. and got to Lakeland 4.30. Distance each way 73 miles

Saturday March 27-1937 Purchased my return ticket to New Haven. Fare including Pullman $48.83. To leave Monday April 5 at 1.10 P.M. Sunday April 4-1937 Packed the two boxes I wrote to go to Express collect Tomorrow, and then packed more of my luggage. The day is hot one but with lots of wind. At 5.15 the wind sudden changed from SW to NE with lightning and storms after 6 P.M. there was a little of rain. Must write consider The Palms a small but fancy boarding house, but much like The New Florida Hotel.

Lakeland, Fla. April 5 - 1937. I am in lower berth one, in car A/36, to go through without change to New Haven. New Haven, April 6-1937 Got back to the Lawn Club at 6 P.M. "All are well that ends well"

July 6, 1937. Tuesday. 7439 Left New Haven at the Lawn Club at 10 A.M. in the Timm-LeVine car on a vacation trip into the Barke Country. We traveled by the College High way to Farmington and New Hartford. Thence went to Simsbury and near Pittsfield Remnant we had a fine lunch at a new ranch house called the Gellar Coterie. Left here at about 2 P.M. at 3:15 stopped at Bennington to see the monument commemorating the battle of 1777. Passed Manchester at 4 P.M. and then through Dorset, Dal- tingford, Brandon and stopped at Middlebury CT. Put up at the New Middlebury Inn. A warm day but not too hot and traveled without mishap 225 miles

Wednesday July 7-1937 Left Middlebury at 9:15 to find Innate Out, went SW of Middle- bury to Lake shore and then found our brake broken. Motored back to Middle- borough and got fixed by noon. Stuck lunch before starting north to Georgia Ctwn and thence west to see the Pike is Breccin. Then to Parkers Castle. We left here at 2PM, north to St Albans on Bay and thence east to St. Albans. Then north to Highgate Camp where we put up at Pike Lodge on Lake Champlain.

Thursday July 8 - 1937 Left the Pike Lodge at 8 A.M. In Highgate Centre and Highgate Sore. Found the place as I had. Then started for Montreal. Passed Highgate Spring at 9.30 A.M. Did not go into the city but crossed the great river on the new Jacques Cartier Bridge. Had lunch about 20 miles cast at a road house known as The Catering Lte - imitation log houses a most curious amateur French archi- tecture. The chicken dinner was good. Then motored on cast at Three Rivers I was a bit tired out and so concluded to go farther. Put up at a rather fancy French Hotel Chateau de Blois. A very hot day riding through small villages with individualistic small curious homes and more curious still strips of the door to the second floor.

Friday July 9th 1937. Left three Pinos to go 80 miles east to Quebec, where we arrived a little before noon. Put up at the Clarence Hotel a night good place. Did not expect to see a roll up some on the north shore, but after getting to Les Grandes are before to see Asia the road good entire of the thin red lead Trenton is ash, and in a few minutes saw Dalmanella ngata, Antrigella dericia, Rofinesquina deltoidea, orell Plata stiffera kiftana, Prasflora and ritual frygrams. Saw ritual niflido far - then ear to head of Cape Santeles - chamrlet. This Trenton probably goes on to Chmtonneni bulis covered by glaciar clay and boulau clay. Had lunch at teChitean de Fonte - nae, and the ladies went shopping. To - morrow we start ear for the Santa Catarina.

Saturday July 10 - 1937 Left Quebec at 9.30 A.M. Crossed the river in the Leri Ferry. A beautiful cool day, but the gravel roads are dry and many are "crack-braced" and shells the auto dreadfully and the dust is so thick that we cannot see ahead. The Laurentides stood out well and we had them close and high all the way to Riviere du Lou. Offonte Bie bog was far away and much lower. At Bie Min Le Vene and I looked on the cays, and tried to find L.C. better but got none. Saw me small granite pieces and a flood of basalt over this part again in the cays. This basalt is in itself very dense and was Canadian as a Precambrian. Staying at the Hotel St Laurent at Rimouski. Expensive and no good.

From Metis or north to laugmgt is more prominent than south to Levi. These hills all strike out one after another into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This is against Clouds river and the hills being curved to east, fork of my explanation. Before reaching Edouard de Mechins =Mechnin, about 203 miles or so much is very like that of Bic. The gorge is 20- 3 miles long and maybe thicker from 50 feet. It is up front in dellholes on either side if the auto road. Saw my fnis. Mine is also more seen before getting to Cape Chat (= south of Cape Chat). Put up at Le Chateau Cap Chat.

Sunday July 11-1937 About 9.30 started south to St. Blan- dine Church, to find if possible the contact be- tween the Quebec series and the Silurian. Here seems to be no chance to find it here. Saw a Silurian sequence for two miles down, all a muddy siltstone series with some fine grained ss and rare very thin lls. The latter are at times made up of broken fossils mostly crinoidal matter, but nothing was recogniz- able. In the limy siltstones saw one Schuchertella, Dalmanella, Atrypa reticularis, Bilo- fites Tildra, Lyellia Platyceras and several species of Hiraulos. All are fresh fossils in the limestone at our Tavannes. It is possible that the lower beds are of Trent- port age, but I rather think all is Mid. Silurian. Then had lunch at the St. Laurent in Rimouski. At 1.30 started north down the St. Lawrence river. At Metis there is much Languy g t intruded with red and green slate

jul 22-37 At Mont St.Pierre the Quebec again struck out to sea. From Gros Morne east for many miles, in fact almost to Cape Rosier, we are in a thin series of clay sl and then bedded muds ss, and of a light blue-grey color than the Quebec series. This is identical to series that Logan in 1863 called Hudson River. Stopped at three places to look for fossils but saw none. It seems here in Nfld instead MS and much of the coal for along to sea shore. At 12-30 to 1.30 we are at lunch at Hotel Bon Accueil at Riviere Madeleine. It was a good lunch that cost 1.00. These people will get rich without doing much work. Passed Fox River at 3.30. The Hudson River series is here as farthern south. At about 4.45 we are at Cape Rosier and see close at hand the Cape Bon Ami, and the St.Albans cliffs. Here we turned south.

Monday July 12 - 1937 Left Chateau Cap Chat at 8:45 in the last day of the trip. The sun is out in full glory, but the dirt roads are when hard and rag dusty. Five miles north of Chat one got a fine view of the Chicchochets and pretty Table Top Mt. Later one had other glimpses of the range, being the headland at St. Joachim de Tourelle showed a series of marine terraces jutting out up to 400'. The lower one at about 60' was seen again and again as we traveled northward. Farther N, to Riviere de la Maste one see much Quebec, mostly the lower Laurentian divisions. At the Puroeau Artoun the strike of the Quebec goes out to sea with a more northerly angle by from 15-30 degrees from the land. One saw this condition run and run again farther north. Farther north the grad rises to about 2000' at one the sea

Jul 12 -37. and soon the road cut almost to white of the Grand Tetons series, but saw but far Trails. Finally we arrived at Caspe and in the next 20 miles rounded the head of this bay and into Snake Basin. Port here at 6 P.M. Stopping at the Bakers Hotel. It was an interesting and spectacular day.

Tuesday, July 13 - 1937 Left Gaspe Basin and the Baker Hotel a little before nine A.M. and got to Perce' at 11 P.M. It was a long trip crossing the new toll bridge at Gaspé Village and then along the south side of Gaspe Bay seeing the Grand Scenic cliff ridge. When we got to Malbay we had in this beautiful sunny but cool day a splendid view of the Perce region on the south side of Malbay. At the Corner of the Beach our way to Mata- pedia was by the old road now widened and good for heavy autos that goes over the moun- tain to the south of St. Anne. Perce is now more able to take care of Tourists than ever before. We are stopping at my old place the Perce House run by Mr. Bisson This is a new hotel building and up on the mountain side of the Pic is a large Cabin settlement. There are other new places. The South Beach Hotel looks like a good place.

July 13-1937 At 1.30 P.M. one had a power boat take us by Pierce Brook and then around the north side of Bonaventure Island, aiming to please the ladies and so they all put on gills are 7-8 species of birds nesting on the eastern high cliffs. Barnets are most common. (2 miles by 1/2 is 3 miles due south) This island shows the Bonaventure fm considerably disturbed in open fields and small undulations. The Appalachian disturbance is distinct and steeper than I had expected, but this is owing due to faulting. The grass lands are very coarse in thick gms with herds of turkeys fat acres. There is also some cross-feeding, and the feeding is not at all as regular as in marine states. St. Anne is said to be "1400 high" (1230). On Bonaventure Island live 13 fishing families with 53 oratus. All in all this boating trip of 1/2 hours was one the first important data made by me.

July 14 - 1937 Rednes day At 8 A.M. started on foot up the moun- tain road to Sarpe (or St) Fort St Anne) to collect in the Rich wood at the two places seen with Cofren. The road has been widened and more rock is exposed. Above are oaks, trees, and below the larch Catacya grove all goes into shale. Bryzrae are common in some of the trees, but he brachipores are almost absent above but more abundant below. The distance is at mr 2 3/4 miles. Up the mountain it took me 1 1/2 hours to go and down hill I did it in just half the time. Tired of course but not as much as expected.

July 15 mme L. d'eronian, northeast of Robert- sville au ford uprrome & tuffs with some lara flos. At 38 miles and at 47 miles we see mme "Low Glen," but it is not cleared down, The bedding but no fruits are shown. Passed Redgarick at 5.40 P.M. Mme cleared Lide, at 5.30 m. Passed St. Quentin at 6. P.M., then arrives to within 10 miles of St. Leonard. These dirt roads of Canada are a great nuisance, and do Canada no credit.

July 15-1937 Thursday Another fine clear day. We leave Percé at 8.10 A.M. Had lunch at New Pick- at Knights Lodge and Log Bungalows. Mailed port to the ferry opposite Campbellton Totally in aim to ready of balance $2.65 at 3.15 and left the latter town at 3.40 P.M. Settled Route 17 from Campbellton to St Lemard on the St. John river, the dividing line between Maine and New Brunswick. The dis- tance is about 104 miles and have one arrived at 7 P.M., and put up at the New Hotel Cyr, a first class place among the smaller hotels, and a much better French place than is usual. Route 17 was built four years ago and is a good dry straight dirt road and therefore very dusty. There are but little travel on it and about one half the length is through the woods in clearing land. The first few miles upzone amy g d riddal basalt and other volcanic rock. Farther we came in what I simply to be the Lower Quaternary above the Haldimand series. Still farther the soil now enters the taconite. At ten miles one see

Friday July 16 - 1937 Left St. Leonard at 8,15 A.M. across the bridge on the St. John River, and the end of it across the U.S. Creations Offices. Critical, but no nuisance. At Caribou we looked up Mylander and found him at the High School building, where he has a room displaying some of his collec- tion. We chatted about many things for an hour. He said they were to build him a museum building so that he could display the whole of his collection. He is over 73 years old and is as sharp as tar. I counted him to write me an account of his life. At 10,30 we were on our way and at 12,15 we stopped at the Northland Hotel for lunch at Houlton, Maine. Arrived at Bangor Hotel at 5,45 P.M., along the road Looked at several road exposures but learned nothing new. Rainy hard for three hours in the morning.

"Saturday July 17-1937. Left Bangor at 9.15 A.M., on our way To Newport Maine. Had been over this area with Keith. There are many exposures, but "Silurian" as far nothing before made an attempt to collect. Newport at 9.55. Waterville at 10.45, Augusta 11.40, had lunch here, Leviston 1.30 P.M. Bgag 2.05, At Ro- cheleu New Hampshire at 4:20. Then thru the capitol cit, Concord and put up at a farm house some miles S.W. at McKenm (The Hillinton Inn). Had a good supper here, and slept well while on of the night. This Inn is now rebuilt in the style of 1700, The house being built in 1796 and remodeled in 1934. Rented from Mr. M. E. Guerin.

Sunday July 18-1937. Left Hartford about 8:30 A.M. and went on route 202 and Willimantic, Farmington, Petersen R.R. to Norwich Mans., to Ethol, Hillsdale College where we had dinner at the Book Shop Inn. Then continued on route 202 and the College Highway to New Haven. Got to Lawn Club at 4:30 P.M. Total Mileage traveled 2140 miles Cost of gas and oil at m't $48.00 Cost of trip to meet $190.00 All in all it was an enjoyable 2 weeks trip in an auto with Mrs. Le Vere and Miss Timm.

September 7 - 1937 At 3 P.M. train the short Gene to Bos. Ton and put up at the Lenox Hotel. September 8 - 1937 Spent most of the day with Professor Ragmmel. He told one his book is finished all but the drawings and trading. Enrydons is left for another ton, which he says de moru will print. Ragmnd looks well but his memory is fast vanishing, and he says he will not live long enough to become American. two. It seems futile. September 9 - 1937 Spent the day at Concord M.A. to see the State House and the Stirk, Doc. The town does not impress me as favorable as it did when I autryd thugh it last last July.

September 10-1937 Spent the day at Salem and visited the [illegible] Museum. At noon took the bus to Marble- head and had a three dinner at the Cidams House; again dinner. Then by Bus back to Boston. Saturday Sep 11-1937 As it is raining emoluted totake to nine A.M. then line to take Tr New Haven. Had lunch at the Lawn Club. A nice little restiny trip.

New Haven, Conn. Tuesday Dec 21 - 1937. On my way to Florida and Lakeland on the 11.57 P.M. A fine slightly clouded day, with a little snow last night, but cold. All in all the winter has been mild. Bought a round trip Ticket $68.60, saved $10.20. Ticket good for six months. On the Gulf Coast Limited to Atlantic Coast line. At Washington on time at 5.50 P.M. Left at 6.40. Retired before we got to Richmond. Much of the day I read for the second time Ostrom Cope's Master Naturalist. Reading it mostly to get at the Marsh- Cope controversy. Both jealous and am- bitious. Pullman not more than one-half oc- cupied, no upper taken.

Wednesday Dec 22 - 1937 Georgia - Florida Got up just before arriving at Savannah at 7:30 A.M. The sun is up but hazy and the temperature cool but not cold. Leave about 30 minutes late. Arrived on time at Jacksonville, at 10:30. Bright sunshine, temp. about 58°. Heat in the Pullman. Left Jacksonville at 11:15 A.M., 15 min late. Got to Lakeland and about on time at 3:45 P.M. Had a taxi take one to the New Florida Hotel and took the room engaged #23. It is a fine large room with the bath and clothes arm. called #.

January - Feb. - March 1938 Chittenden and daughter put up at my hotel about the middle of January and Edick returned home in March 17. I worked all the days on the March Memorial volume until March 22 when I got all written up as far as Jan or here in Florida. March 24-25 - packed books etc in two wooden boxes and one large bundle. It will go by Express collect. March 21 strong sleeper north to Richmond Pa (=-#6.75-) on the 7.22 P.M. On Monday March 28 Prof Chittenden goes with me, but departs at Baltimore to be dened and flocked at the Jubilee of the Physiological Society and of which he is the original C. has to make one speech at a luncheon, and address at two banquets.

Lakeland Monday March 14 - 1938 Edith Chittenden spoke for 20 minutes on Growth, and I an another session on the Life of the Earth before the local Natural History Society. The meeting was in the Commission Room of the City Hall. She had a dry subject but appreciative audience. Lerma Bailes is the Librarian of Lakeland Library. A fine lady. Edith Chittenden taught good one year in a school in North Carolina. Send her titles of popular books on geology.

Friday March 25-1938 Lakeland Spent two hours this afternoon at the winter home of Professor Wright and his son in law Mr. Hart. Their families spend six months each year at their home in Penn Yan, New York. Mr. Wright is now 88 and has long taught school at Penn Yan, and did giological work for the New York State Bureau. He knew Hall, Clarke, Luther, H. S. Williams and many other northern geologists. He is a great lover of all bot. work and especially Bromidiac and plants. Send my paper on Portage glacial evidence and topography of Canada, White etc. to Mr. Wright

"Lakeland March 28-1938 Monday. Took my fare over and around Major Lake, and dispatched the re- mainder of my baggage. Paid my last cost of travel and hired the servants. All's well that ends well. Had a pleasant winter in Lakeland and for Ten years daily walks or talks with Chittenden. Togeth we start at 1.22 P.M. on the Gulf Craft Limited. Tomorrow growing at 8.10 expect to sit off at Richmond, Virginia. It's a very hot day, and my car is not air conditioned - in consequence an uncom- fortable trip up to Jacksonville. It showered here. Our train at Jacksonville is made in two sections, and Chittenden on one another section. Retired at nine o'clock, and the car is now cooler but still warm.

Tuesday March 29 - 1938 Richmond, Virginia. After six this morning we was travel travel and train is held up. We got to Rich- mmd at 10:30 instead of 8:15 A.M. Mr Billamstry Tracy. Visited once again the Capitol building of Virginias other or much history was made. There is sculpture of Genl Washington about 3x size by Houdon of France. Close by is a bust of Thomas Jefferson by the same artist, and it's quite different from the sculp- ture full length by Valentine at the Jefferson Hotel. Put up at the Jefferson Hotel, the grand- est hotel in all of my experience. Openers to marble pillars are all imitation - painted marble. This hotel was built many years ago by a citizen of Richmond be- a citizen. He came, had no good hotel. He put in his money expecting it to help the city. His now run by the Hotel company have aside hotel at Baltimore and another at Norfolk.

Wednesday March 30-1938 Richmond, Virginia. Intended to spend the day at Williamsburg in "La Grille de Re- publie" but had so much lumbar that I did not dare go. Lingered around the great Jefferson Hotel, and took Calcium Sulphide Tablets. By late afternoon it seemed to be my course. Showered hard today. Packed up, ready to take the 8:15 A.M. train tomorrow for home. About as warm here as in Fla. Too bad Donald joined me on- fog Richmond and Williamsburg.

"On the Way Home Thursday March 31 - 1938. Left the great Jefferson Hotel at 7.30 A.M. in a car for the depot. The 8.15 train came on time. A bright sunny day, and everywhere the fruit trees in bloom. When we got north of Fredericktown a fog was lying over the land and it got thicker as we proceeded north. One hundred miles north of Washington steam was turned on to warm the cars. The fog held on and is thick as ever through Phila. & Althia. Fog and very light rain all the way to N.Y. City. Got there at 4.25, or 30 minutes late. That's one lot at Washington. Left N.Y. City at 4.55 and got to New Haven at 6.35 P.M. Taxied over with my luggage to the Lawn Club and took some number eight.

Trips to Saspe 1938 with Prestm Cloud, [7429]

New Haven, Conn. Monday August 8, 1938 Left New Haven at 9.20 A.M. with Pres- ton Cloud at the wheel of his auto to get to Portland, Maine by night. At noon we had lunch at Wolgole and by 12.30 we were again on our way. Got to Rochester N. Hampshire at 5.40 P.M. and put up at the New City Hotel. We travel- ed about 225 miles, or about 30 miles per hour. Started out at N. Haven via Route 7010 and then via 202 all the way to Rochester. It was a hot day and the auto heats of considerably, and as the car has no bottom or front openings, riding was not at all comfortable. Cloud is a careful driver and handles the old car nicely. This Old Buick das gone over 81,000 miles.

Bar Harbor, Maine Tuesday Aug. 9 - 1938 Left Rochester N.H. at 8 A.M. and traveled via Danford, Yorkham, Lewiston to Augusta, Maine, on Route 202. Instead of going to Waterville we decided via Belfast in the coast to Buck'sport, Ellsworth to Bar Harbor. At Ellsworth we ran into a heavy shower and it rainedy after we got into Bal Har- bor. Put up at the Central House, the same place when due with LeVene and Timm. The distance traveled was about 285 miles. About 4:15 - the rain ceased and the sun came out. Decided to go top of Cadillac Mt., former Green Mt (or in Shalu) at 1537' above sea. Had an interesting time, but the heavy cumulus clouds - some near sea level - obscured the view. Could not see Mt Katahdin 110 to the north, and not at all the White Mts. And if you could say in peculiar light could take fan off on the ocean. Maybe again to amount. Visitors swarmed at the top more than half one ladies in their run cars.

Bar Harbor - St. Leonard, Me. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1938 At 7:45 started up to top of Cadillac Mt. A cold windy but bright morning. View fine but not better than late yesterday afternoon. Too windy and cold to stay long at the top. Left Bar Harbor at 9AM, north for Bangor, Orono, Old Town etc. Had lunch at Lincoln at noon. By 12:30 on our way further south to Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou and Dan Buren. At latter place we arrived at 5:45 PM. Got through the Canadian Customs House by 6:15- and then put at Hotel Cgr. in St. Leonard Total distance traveled 264 miles. It was a windy but clear and a fine day. Just north of Houlton the roads being widened and several dilution's are being made. Clearage known or decided with the state dipping from 25 to 400.

St. Leonard to New Richmond Thursday August 11 - 1938 Left St. Leonard in a rain and it kept it up until 2/3 down to Campbeltown where I had not rained at all. Set to Campbeltown at 11:30 having come 98 miles. Went on at once to Dalhousie where we had lunch at the hotel run by the great paper making company, J. After lunch went to Stewart Core to collect the Dalhousie fm and started it to usual forms. The tide was in and or high we could not the south end of the section. Then motored back to Campbeltown and took at 5 P.M. to Ferry across the bay to Barker Peninsula, and then D.E. to New Richmond where we arrived at 6:45 P.M. Put up at Campstells Inn a private home. Motored about 170 miles (100 to Campbeltown, 26 to Stewarts Cove both ways, and 44 to N. Rich- mund). Put up at Campstells Tourist Inn.

New Richmond to Port Daniel Friday August 12 - 1938. Rained all night and kept it up in the morning. Decided not to go on to Black Cape. Cloud wanted to see the section and he did, in the morning, until about 11 A.M. Cloud got back at 7 P.M. I don't he saw the entire section. Had lunch at Campbells Inn and left a little before 2 P.M. from it being rain and kept it up all the time as far on our way to Port Daniel. Put up at a new Inn called Villa Anna, run by apparently Frank Pelle. Got here at 8 P.M., having come about 50 miles. Cold and wet and the little Inn is stuffy and uncomfortable. After supper talked to Cloud about how I built my Washington collection. Then felt tough I was still through- out, but rested over on warm bed and a toothache.

Port Daniel, Gaspe Peninsula Saturday August 13-1938. But of more to write after my chill of last night. Thick clouds and by 9 A.M. the sun got through. Visited the north coast of Port Daniel Bay out to the lighthouse. Collected 2 1/2 at the low, yielding the machijporc fauna near the base of the Bouleaux fm. but quite a lot of machijporcs. Near the top the Bouleaux fm saw 3 jpn specimen of the "Immonarella". Clouds coverd over Teller, the one fair specimen showing the exterior. In these beds got one tivalors and some kind of a marine plant. The Lighthouse is on the long point to West Point Is. Have also seen the Cristatromus items. Collecting is always unsatisfactory here. Had lemon at the Villa Anna. In the afternoon collected on the west

August 13 - 1938. Side of the Banach is about 1/4 mile west of a small hotel facing the main highway. This is in the La Velle series or the other- landicina beds. Cloud found a fine Mon- teus with several traced segments. Then looked at the quarries at L'Infer in the lower ls of the Saint Point series. Then drove around to the west and then east to the shore north of L'Infer hill. The my forms collected one Lepur dithia near the middle of the Boulcaux series. Returned to Villa Anna hotel run by Italians. They run this place in the sum- mer and in the winter go south.

Port Daniel to Corner-on-the-Beach Sunday Aug 14, 1938. Started northeast at 8.30 A.M. for Redpoint to collect brachiopods, and got a large lot of them. Had lunch at Baie-en and then we collected a large series of igneous rocks for Prof. Knopf. Cloud did it once and told him to make the present. Finally we spent about four hours in the R.R. out at La Vieille, and collected a few fossils. Cloud got another Boreteus. Then at four started for' Port and Corner-on- the-Beach when we arrived at 6.30 P.M. Put up at the Gibert Hotel, but Mrs Gibert died the year I was here last. I am stiff and tired out. Corner of the Beach, Monday Aug 15. Had a very bad night with my stomach out of order that finally went into dysentery. Have no strength and muscles are all painful. Did no work today. Foggy day with some light rain.

Murphys Bn - Cambria August 15 - 1938 Cloud found some trims this morning, but nothing any significant. From the railway out. In the afternoon he was more succes- ful, but most Lingula and tiny fragmentated trilobites, but true is not a single thing I know. Once can be collected, appears to be same fauna got by Cecil Kindle. Cloud is collecting such minute or- ganic remains that among them I saw a pro- tarpsis stage of a trilobite. He thinks it's a minute Agnatids, but should see more such,

Corner of the Beach. Tuesday, August 16-1938. Another foggy morning with light rain. I remain at the hotel, but Cloud goes gathering and collecting. After lunch walked south to the Corner and then along the mountain road to a quarry for road metal just S.E. of a Protestant church. Saw no fossils in site, but in the brook laid aside about ten pieces with Whitchell fossils. These come down the brook from beds of fine sand further up the stream. Just N.W. of the Protestant Church some red oys stand on end and these according to Allcock and Kindle are of the Cannes de Roche form. Below an coarse coy, 40' thick; then middle ss and sl 80'; and above in the Upper Coy: 40' = 200. Has plants suggestive rather of the early Penn. than Miss. See Allcock's map for distribution. Regards it as a part of the Bunaventine defined in different rocks. The red rock on the top of Reed Peak is Barke- sandstone. This is what Corder and Hornblunt.

with interbedded, is usually thin bedded but in places the beds are up to one foot in thickness. The shales all weather into a soft rosy color. The country all about has so much Barnaventre, loose tholts and bedded exposures that it follows that the southern Barnaventre connects unbroken with the Carnne des Roke formation of the north. For my Whithead fossils collected yes- terday. This is of the Calagzza horizon.

Corner of the Beach Wednesday August 17, 1938 It turned cold last night and before nine A.M. today set in for a hard rain. Cloud started out before it rained but by ten o'clock every hand and no wonder since it is raining hard. Are sit around a small turner stone and wonder what kind of weather we can to have Tomorrow. Corner of the Beach Thursday August 18, 1938 Cloud and started out in a light fog for the Cambrian loc. 2 1/2 miles west of the R.R. cut. We found no Cambrian fossils. The cut has recently been widened, and the material is too fresh to give good results for fossils. It appears that all rock under the cut to C. is underlain by a thick-bedded orthite and slippery sandy loc 40-50' thick, that appears to be of the Whitehead fm. The C. is thin-bedded string-shales (see on to left).

"Corner of the Beach" Thursday August 18 - 1938 Cloud got in to Whitehead is informed about mile beyond the locality, a young Cataggsa. Thereafter found seen were tiny crinoid col- umnals. Part of the Whitehead appears to be of exceedingly shallow water, and muddy mudras traps at times living anmp to make it. The mollus is also speaks in shallow water, Into such the young spat get but could not Grow up and establish colonies, keeps the ex- heme variety of mature forms.

Corner of the Beach Friday August 19, 1938. Dark foggy morning and looks like rain. I stay at the hotel, but Cloud is gone to the C. Doc. Later it clears up but with cumulus clouds. I got tired reading, and then started south along to head To see the Cannes de Roche from Bonneventure fm. It's interbedded coarse clyo derived fm. the Devon Dev. fm with very coarse sandy greenish silt. There is present a good deal of cement silt and in the clay, some occur logs of trees up to 14 inches in dia- cmeter and 12 feet long. These log originally were hollow, and now filled with sand and pebble or the most is cemented flat. The wood consists of layers of flinty coral and iron precipitated bands. In places these coarse logs are 6 inches thick. Sawmnr Calcenite or even pieces of leaves. These deposits were laid down in streaming action and all is present. It is a highly- pisolitely interbedded coarse clastic laid down by out streams coming out from a highland of Devon- ian rocks.

Corner of the Beach Friday August 19, 1938. Spent the afternoon in the C. railway cut 2 1/2 miles W. of this place. Cloud found more lumps here this morning, but a totally different material than that of any slab. I got none in this cut this year. Tried hard to find a trace of a fossil of any kind in the overlying marine light blue oolitic ls, but for once found a single trace. Farther south on the road the same ls ap- pears to be present and here occur small crinoidal columns, and a baby Cataggyza. Therefore the overlying ls is of the Whitehead series. Cloud made a complete exploration of Onwayup Brook this afternoon the full length of the C. outcrop, and now has about all the data in hand to be had. We feel that we can describe the C. better than any one else, but as to the use of the fossils we must have to wait until they are worked out and studied.

Corner of the Beach Saturday, August 20 - 1938 A bright, cool, and windy morning, but nevertheless John out feel little doing geologic work in the Cambrian. Cloud goes out alone and is kind enough to urge me to stay at the hotel, and John so. At eighty years one has no business to do fieldwork. When Cloud came in at noon he showed me some of his C. fossils, the best of the trip. One was the adult Dicellocephalus, another large and fine physidium, and small Dicellrocephalus. Two fine specimens of a paprolite. He wants to make one more effort to collect one. In the afternoon John and Cloud the south coast of Malta by and the Camme de Rode fm. This was the first day climatically of the trip.

Corner of the Beach (1) Tuesday August 21-1938 A splendid, bright, cool day and at 9.30 A.M. are off for the Priests road. My old Ford loc., having been renewed and so are fit no roads excepting a few byzaran slats. Finally are got to the Grand Coulee and found a crash out until a great hole in the gravel narrowing it considerably and the question could are get past it. Fortunately are could dig down the backwall enough to permit the car to get by the under-mired hole. Cloud had a ratchet post and he moved it into place, and so he got by safely although he had the door to the car tightly tied with a thin string, or that if he felt the car going he could jump for life, but here was no need for this. Then are stopped four hour at the Pic de Aurora (Red Head) and Cloud climbed it and photored all around Mal Bay. Then are climbed Mont Joli and viewed the Pierced Rock clear as hand. Next are walked

Corner of the Beach Monday August 22-1938 We expected it would be raining today, and so it is. And after having a hard out off once again in the Cambrian fowls. In two hours he is back over all through. It continued to rain until late afternoon, and this morning it has cleared up. We decided that it's useless to move more on the Cambrian. Still now take up the Ordovician, but may not make much headway in searching out the few scattering fossil horizons. Corner of the Beach. Tuesday, August 23-1938. Today we are to spend on the Whitehead Farm, all the way from Corner of the Beach to Whitehead Lake on the coast. "Corner of the Beach Tuesday August 23, 1938 I saw several large brown pieces of ls which had the fruits of my Cyclonema Red. We were in hunting but got nothing more for the day. At Whitehead Cloud found a ladder down the cliff at the south end, and here in what I regarded as the Cape Cannon for de put the fact of an Encirumns. Had lunch at the Peace House, and when we finished it began to rain. Cloud much wanted to see the Red cliffs on Bonaventure Island and found a party of eight to take the trip at a dollar a piece. All went in the direction. We got back at about 5 P.M., and then we autored well to Corner of the Beach. The distance is a little more six miles. The south end of Whitehead is faulted (norm- ally) onto the Cape Cannon or Whitehead has drop- ped. Cloud has photos of the fault.

"Corner of the Beach" Wednesday August 24, 1938. A cool dark morning with no sun- shine and no rain. Cloud wants to go back to Pierce and find fossils in the Cape Cannon Hills. He takes his lunch with him, and at 8 A.M. he is off for the day. I stay at Vibert's Hotel, since it is useless to travel. Cloud returned at 5 P.M. and at White- head had an interesting time. Found some good fossils and one looks like a Rhynchostoma. He made quite a seat in S. of the head be- fore it was covered by the Bmar venture. Cloud wants to return to Pierce to work up its detail, path and structure. Of his own accord he could do so, and it is questionable if it can help financially.

Hotel Chiquita Cap des Roiers.

Cape Rosario Thursday August 24-1938. A fine morning and after paying our hire we are off at 9 A.M. for Sarpe. Dropped here at at 10.30. Bought a new hat, and had free of immense cashed. Saw the Cartier granite cliffs, had lunch and at 12 noon were on our way to Cape Rosario. Arrived here at 3.30 and started on foot to see the St. Catherine Cliffs. At 5 P.M. we leave the cliffs and put up with a one hour later at Cape Rosario. It is a good place at a reasonable rate, run by Mrs Smith. The Welding experience was usual faulted at the east end [Trowies Cape Rosin] against which the "Cambro-Ord." shales and mudstone is abut. Cloud get one fine yes- terday. Just a few Grand Green fossils on the road from the Sarpe to Cape Rosario side.

Cape Rosiers to Metis Beach Friday August 26, 1938. Left Cape Rosiers before 8 A.M. and the auto latered on the mountains along the St. Lawrence river. By 6:20 P.M. we were at the Pamvored Hotel, at the south end of Metis Beach. Had a splendid view of Table Tops Mt (4220') from Cape Chat. From here south the auto road grades once easy to speed on. But the road bed is a disturbed and dusty track of jumbled boulders. The beach beneath the Pamvored Hotel is one of green and red silt with thick growths of the conventional Laurentian eraser grass. Saw no any lumbering, these evidently are farther north since Metis on the sea is strong along the road for about five miles. It's an extensive summer resort place with hotels of all kinds and some fine private homes. Put up at the Pamvored Hotel at Little Metis.

In the Bic cnpls saw several pieces of gneiss, rare granite, greenstone and traps. But no L-C. formations possible. In this region and for many miles to the S., the coarse quartzite makes high ridges and far over into the St. Lawrence river.

Little Metis to Levis Saturday, August 27 - 1938 Left Little Metis at 8 A.M. and autored all the way to Levis, 233 miles. Speed- ed throug Sainte Flavic when the Intercolonial R.R. turns east to Matane. Mait-Rimouski, and Riv Oden are examined for wonderful typo- graphy and the interesting is, Engl. Then on to Trois Pistoles, Rivier du Lou, and Port Joli, then drewn to Cheron and it kept it up, and hard, all the way to Levis. Here we arrived and put up at Johnans Victoria Hotel. Levis Opposite Quebec. Sunday, August 28, 1938. Spend the day in Quebec, at Mmt- morence, and Sainte Ann du Beaupre. Had lunch at Kent House at Mmtmrence, and duning in Quebec. Then more on in Rufferin Terrace and to Johnmans Hotel.

Leris, Monday August 29 - 1938 Spent the morning studying the Quebec Series back of Leris. At the north end back of the Leris friendly Cloud got a specimen of Elkania and some papetrolites. Then farther north to near Laugom to see the owl, and the great ls. Kitherums. Got back to Orphanages by 12:30, had lunch here, and then rested for a while. La- ter went on to Quebec and the Clapper Tanager, and finally packed up to leave in the morning for Montreal and Phillips- bury. Cloud spent part of the afternoon as the Phyllograpus cut in the dirt. Etc, R.R. walk of Leris.

Phillipsturg, Quebec Tuesday, August 30, 1938 Left Levis at 8 A.M. and spent one hour examining the Levis charts to the S. of the village. Then the Dillings red beds and dt he great St. Lawrence Bridge the Lau- gon. Then autored until 1 P.M. when we had lunch at Nicolet. Then on to Amite (in) Montreal and St. Zambout, Hertville, to Phillipsturg. Got to Phillipsturg at 6 P.M. Put up at the House on he main highway to Dronton and St. Albans. It is the most fun place I ever was in. They danced from 9 to 12, and I wrote up about 11. Thrilling something may with one, when I found I learned that I was hearing the regular drumming of the drum of the Nat time band.

St. Albans, Vt. Wednesday, August 31, 1938 First drove over to St. Armand, and looked over the outcrops on the Mallett farm. Then jumped through the Customs inspec- tion, and into the Vermont Marble yard in Brantrim. Sold several pieces of marble. Looked over the Brantrim quarry sequence, and the Parker quarry further south. Then took to Brantrim for lunch. Next examined the Fonda Quarry and the outcrop between the Mallett and the Trenton- Chazy. Next looked up the Rockledge cyl. north to Hippsate Falls. Then to Russell quarry. Finally put of returned at the Taron in St. Albans.

St. Albans to Bennington Vt. Thursday, September 1 - 1938, Examined the section from St. Albans west To Troy's line. Must visited the Parker quarry north of Benjin Center. At noon 11:00 started at Benjin Center for home. Had lunch at Burlington. Then in south to Rutland and Bennington when we arrived at 5:45 P.M. Put up at the oldest building in Bennington said to have been built 174 years ago. The first settlement of Bennington was in 1762, this building said to have been built as a hotel and has kept Therefore this was before any of the large buildings in Bennington to be built. It is now run as the Dralloonsac Inn. Opposite is the Church rebuilt in 1886 and beside the older cemetery. The place appears to be filled with lured aristocrats.

Bennington H. tr N. Haven Friday, Sep. 2 - 1938 Left Bennington H at 8.30 for Williamstown and North Adams, and then for the Greenfield to [illegible] Greenfield. Then tr Northampton and Holyoke, when one turn to the College Highway no 202 and from m 10 tr New Haven. Cloud gave me in writing his thanks - certainly a very kind thanks it is. Through out the trip he waited more like a beautiful son, and like a son I paid his dues for the entire trip. It was the greatest delightful trip desire took on any take. 1938 Winter in Florida Saturday Dec 17 - 1938 It was dark and not my best day with a little rain in the air, and I am again on my way to Florida - to Lake Land. The New Haven-Hartford train is scheduled to leave at 11:49, but left instead 15 minutes late. Round trip ticket for 6 months is $8.60 Leave forth one way is $10.25 " " return $10.25 $19.10 We are again on time at New York, and Washington. Sunday Dec 18 - 1938 A fine sunny day in Florida. We arrive 1:15" late at Lakeland. The New Florida Hotel porter is at the depot to meet me in their new car. Had none before. This year I am in 423 instead of 523. A nice room with twin furniture.

Lakeland Jan. 13-1939 Professor Chittenden arrived this afternoon at 3.40. Train on time. He looked tired from the trip. Lakeland, Jan. 28-1939 Was asked by Mr. Wright of Dan gan to visit him and to meet his son Electrician in the Navy. He is much interested in geology. Found him reading Wales Architecture of the Earth's Crust, recently published. Had an enjoyable three talking science with Mr. Wright and Mr. Hart (son in law of the elder Wright).

Lakeland Feb 10-1939 Professor Kay [illegible] called to see one. He has been at Miami for about two months playing golf and swimming in the ocean. On he came today from Miami to Lakeland. Tomorrow morning he and his wife start for home. Lakeland Feb. 27-1939 Today at noon in the dining room Dr. [illegible] Leith of Wisconsin greeted me. In the morning he autographed me with his wife from Clearwater. He is finishing up a tour of the state.

Lakeland March 29-39 Grand day. Finished all homework promptly with me tr Florida. Lakeland March 30-1939 This morning shipped 1000 Trees of Torres to Express (value $500) collect, and my long traveling day is cheered by the fact that I am in Tampa, Fla., in a hotel where I met New Year when I arrive. The date is me the latter of this month. March 31-1939 Left Lakeland, Fla on the 1:21 P.M. train for home and Sale Mir. All ran shorewell.

New Haven, Conn. Dec 16-1939 Saturday I leave the Lawn Club at 11 A.M. in a yellow Cab to the depot, thus having broken a large suite case. At 11.48 A.M. promptly Thomas starts and I am again on my way to Florida. The day is fine and a little hazy and Thomas keeps this schedule till we get to Washington. Then are leave 10 min. late due to the heavy traffic. Sunday, Dec 17-1939 Slept well all night. The day starts in foggy and before we get to Jacksonville the sun is not clear. We are now late 1/2 hours. The Pullman porter tells me that meetings started from Washington to Florida and there I am on had at one time during the night 20 cars, and continue to Jack-

Smolville 180ars. Therefore cause to the delay, since the weather was constant ice or rain. Instead of getting to Loeeland at 3.05 it was over P.M. At the depot The Florid Hotel Florida car was at hand to meet me, and I left 4-23 to same arm had lost fear. By 6.15 was injected and not after a light supper April 1 - 1940 Sunday Did the last writing on the stratispa- thing trip, Greenland and Ellesmerland. April 2 - 1940 Packed three boxes of books and my great amount of MSS. For the big bag with my clothes and had the hotel Porter ship ace.

April 3 - 1940 After breakfast walked around Montm Lake and got into a perspi- ration, Then read the rest of the morning and rested. April 4 - 1940 With Chitenden at 1.06 P.M. or left Zabel and Florida for home, Had a pleasant visit April 5, 1940 On train all day and got to New Haven on time about 5.30 P.M. Fifteen minutes later was at the Lawm Club, when Kirkh met me and took me to my room No. 8.

Monday Dec. 2 -1940 At 8 A. M. took Bankers Express for New York, then arriving at time at 9.35. Then via a Yellow Cab transferred to the Pennsylvania R. R. Station where had to wait until 10.30 A. M. when the Pullman onto Tamiami was ready to receive me. The day is slightly cloudy and at about freezing point Tarberkeit, once clear as we proceed and the cool new holes on all the way south. The train keeps to its schedule at least down to Richmond. The sleeper is all engaged for the "knows" and some of the upper or lower sections or mine appear to be unengaged. I retire at 7.30 P.M.

Tuesday Dec. 3 - 1940 Curl all the way to Jacksonville and I did not sleep for once, we ar- ived on time (7 A.M.) and on time (8 A.M.) pro- ceed in Tampa. On trip at Lakeland, where I arrived at 12.45 P.M. The hotel had a cab. The town was to take cab and my luggage to the Plant Florida Hotel. Without any cause I enjoy[illegible] the trip as usual, Probably because I had nothing special to read. Arrived in health and Mandy Baumgarten had my room 423 as last year in the same order I left it last April. At 3 P.M. I am unpacked and once more at home in Paradise.

Dec. 14 - 13 - 1940 All was normal during these days and I made much progress in the final editing of Airgroundland, Md., Va. and W. Virginia. December 13-14 (Friday-Sat.) Had luncheon (Turkey hash, highy at supper time peppered) at the New Florida and a glass of milk with apple pie at the Cafe- teria. About 9 P.M. had a stool out of all ordinary time. About 2 A.M. had a bad chill and it kept up for several hours. The morning the 14th called in Loon R.R. Sullivan (Monte Grade Build) and he thought I had food or/ Tomaine poisoning. He worked one me from the 14 to the morning the 18 when dr said I might have Colitis because any abnormality of stools kept up for long on food poisoning. Trans met otr

hospital. Wednesday Dec 18-1940 About 11 O.M. I entered the Morrell Memorial Hospital and tried private room (no 17). My stools kept on in great abundance (with urine discharges) four or five Times a day) for about four weeks when I began to show signs of amend- ment. The hospital gave me good at- tention and Dr. Sullivan called in once a twice each day and by Jan. 17-1941 I was discharged as needing no further hospital care. During this sickness I lost at least 20 pounds (weighed 140 pounds and when Tom sick I arrived 158 lbs). Lewis and his beautiful wife with a lot of priscettias called on

me December 27. Dr. Chittenden Called Tuesday morning Jan 12 1941 and again Tuesday afternoon Jan 14. On the former day Dr. C. met Dr. Sullivan and they compared arts for one term minutes, from the 12th onward I began to read and rapidly. Friday Jan 17-1941 Left Monroe Memorial Hts. This afternoon at 3 P.M., on a sunny day, and 3.15- P. M. I was again a guest at the New Florida Hotel in my old room as I left it a month ago. Had a supper at the Hotel with Mr. C. My case of Oolites is now, or at least on the decided mend.

Hospital charges during Dec- 18th to Jan 16 = $ 209.04. L. P. Sanderson's Laboratory at hospital (3 tests) = $ 25.00 Dr. R. R. Sullivan for 44 calls @ $3.00 - $ 132.00 Total on sickness $ 416.04. Saturday Jan. 18-1941 Talking breakfast at the Sun Florida, and luncheon and din- ners at the Lakeland Terrace. The latter sets before the last table. Mr. C.'s judgement is therefore better than mine. The last four days have been dark with rain short of time.

Monday Jan. 20 - 1941 Cold this morning with the thermometer down to 380 F. This is true some colder tomorrows, but all day the sun is out in full force. M. C. and I had our first morning walk around Mirror Lake. After lunch I did some shopping. In the afternoon we called on Miss Berena Baileys, the librarian of the big Library. Went to dinner at the Lakeland Terrace. I took five aspirin this six o'clock an aspirin tablet before breakfast. It helped much and reduced my stiff neck. Another half tablet before dinner, then one more before bed time. I am getting in my feet again.

Jan 21 to April 1st 1941 In the Torr weeks after leaving the hospital I gained 10 pounds in flesh. Mr. C. smiles and silently tells me all this program is due to his getting me to take my meals at the Lakeland Terrace. May be so, but it's a good guess after the known facts. A month after leaving the hospital I was well at my regular weight, 109 pounds. As before I am troubled some with stiff neck and some rheumatism. I have gone back to 2-3 cupfuls of tea each day, and try make life more worth while to live. All has gone well with me. I have finished reading and editing my CMS on A.A. Strategy, and feel that I can take it to the printer this volume next autumn.

This winter the creation here in Florida has been out of the regula- lation order. The cold and dull days came in middle January and they kept on up into April. Too much rain than usual, and it is my fear that the orange trees are in flower - a full month late. About two weeks ago I stayed all day in the hotel. On four walks after dinner. Turn from the hospital down Valley by regulation walks three each day. Mrs C. and I have engaged our kitchen three weeks ago, and in the lay afternoon of April 3d we went to New York back to New Haven.

Lakeland, Florida Thursday April 3 - 1941 A dark and rainy morning but not cold. Packing up to leave today at 1:31 P.M. In good health. As we go to the train it rains almost as hard as I can have seen it do in Florida. It rained until we got to Lakeland and from then on there was one had some of the sun. Friday April 4, 1941 When we arrived at Richmond the train was an hour and 40 minutes late, but at New Haven was 20 minutes behind the schedule. It's a fine day and almost as warm as at Washington. No snow to be seen nor any of the trees in blossom, not even the cherry trees at Washington.

Visit to Cincinnati in late August, 1941. August 20. In the morning adjusted my affairs at the Pictory Museum, the Bank, and wrote Loftine a long letter about her employment, Had lunch at the Lawn Club and then packed my luggage. At 2:55 p.m. had a sell car take me to the depot to take to 2:28 (standard) train into Penn Station. Put up for the night at the Pennsylvania Hotel. Thursday Aug 21-1941 Left N.Y. at 9 P.M. (day light) on Pennsylvania R.R. for Pittsburgh. Arriving on time at 6 p.m. Had a car take me to Schenley Hotel in the Oakland Civic Center. Nearby is the University, Carnegie Mus. and a number of other institutions. All is beautifully laid out, and is one of the best setups many of the large American cities.

Carnegie Museum August 22 - 1941. Oolitic horninga originals the most complete specimen of this rhinoceros- like animal, mounted as found. A fine specimen from text book to show how com- plete a skeleton master found pieces. Camarasaurus mantitoeas found. Head all bone found, in a case 10 x 16. Found at Dinosaur National Monument. Very fine, and excellent from text books. diplococus carnegici skatcha, 78 ft long and 13 ft high at the hips. Replicas of it are in the Chat. Museums of England, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Russia, Spain and Argentina. Finally One Carnegie saltme to Mexico City. Fine huge brach, Altay Co, Wyoming. Apatosaurus louisaee Strlland, 76 ft 10 inches long and 14 ft 8 inches high at the hips. Here she stands walking along beside her great husband. From Dinosaur Nat monument, Uinta Co, Utah.

"There is a very fine "Carnifurum Forest" restoration in Memory of Alexander Stewart. It has a great variety of plants and many more kinds than one can cut out. Another pine standing skeleton Centrosaurus (Allisaurus) C. Adams Leig from Dinosaur National Monument. A pine carmins. From the same place a fine and free standing Allosaurus impolutus. The dorsal plates are in a single row but maybe one centimeter from two inches up to nearly one foot There The whit tail of Centrosaurus is nearly 20 feet long before the dorsal portion or offing; the whip is not more 12 feet long. This Museum has 8 mounted dinos. dinos skeletons - a goodly show,

Pittsburgh, Penn. August 23. Saturday. Another fair day and I am ready to start for Cincinnati. The train on the P.R.R. starts at 9 o'clock standard time. Schonely Hotel and Apartments is a very large affair, and was built late in last century, probably proving to be Carnegie Library and Museum. Arrived on time (8:45 & Standard) at Cin- ci where Alice and Albert were awaiting me. Then a long auto ride to the home of Lester Road, Pleasant Ridge. Talked old time Cinti, the war, and other things. Cincinnati (Sunday) Aug 24. Talked over family affairs all the morn- ing. In the afternoon we visited to the Cemetery to see Emmas grave beside our parents.

Then called on Rose Thomas and talked with Cousin Rae once about family affairs. Ciuti, Aug 25-1941. Monday. Alice at 9 A.M. took me to the city Library where I hunted all day among old re- cords, that maybe of value to me in my Electrography. Found much detail and things I did not know before about old Ciuti. August 26 and 27. Tuesday and Wed, Continued each day to hunt for some old facts of value to my Autobiography. Each day Alice takes me to town and comes gain for me at 4 P.M. Have lunch at the Cricht which is connected with the Palace Hotel at the corner of Pine and Sixth St,

Cincinnati, Ohio Aug. 28 - 29, Thursday - Friday Spent most of the time at Cinti. Library hunting up family history and dates. Heard up all talk about Emmus family, and about family histoy and our daily routs. August 30, Saturday. Left Cinti on the 9. O. M. N.Y. Central Railway for Niagara Falls. A hot day. Set to the Falls at 10 P.M. Put up at the Cataract House, the oldest hotel in town, and got the best room they had. Aug. 31 Niagara Falls. Spent most of the day visiting the Falls on each side of the International Broad- way. Another hot day. Arrived more tired than any other in many years.

Niagara Falls, N.Y. Monday Sep. 1-1941. Last day. There is such a crowd here, due to the holidays, that I have concluded to leave it behind. Besides, it's another hot day. Left Niagara Falls at 8.27 A.M. and Buffalo at 9.35 A.M. Train failed. Set for N.Y. half an hour late at 6.30. Left at 7 P.M. for New Haven. Arrived at the Lawn Club at 9 P.M. Standard. Impressed and then retired tired from all the travel, and turmoil.

December 2nd, 1941 Again here on my way to Lake land, Florida. The day is a dark misty one, and a little above the freezing point. Facing across to P.R. Left New Haven 9 A.M. ^ Left the Pullman R.R. in N.Y. at 12:30, when I entered a Pullman [illegible] all the way to Lakeland. My P.R.-Pullman fare this year is $57.45. This is $7.70 more than last due to railroad rates. Securities did it for the benefit of war and Our Country. On getting to Washington the skies are clearing and there is a little sunshine at the Capitol of Our Country. This is at 4:25 P.M. The Pullman during the day was about 1/3 occupied, but at Richmond all of the (cars appeared) to be taken. Evidently on the public is going via coach, and get some in the Pullman or at night.

December 3d 1941 Wednesday. Got up late, at 7.30. The train was stuffy or outside air conditioning. At Jacksonville the very morning was misty, but at Palatka the sun is out and bright then clouds. Our train appears to be on time. South of Jacksonm- ville it began to snow make up as we had from New York and Washington. The migration northerning is not set on in the full. Arrived at Lakeland on time at 12.20 P.M. A bright but hot day. At the New Florida Hotel all was in order for me. Have the same fine and large room with all the furni- ture as last year. Spacled and H.O.M. I am at home again.

January 11th 1942. Professor Chittenden arrived. He remained here until March 31, 1942. I concluded to remain a while longer. April 17 - 1942. Could not get a train Pullman trip to New Haven until April 17. Fare R.R. $45.20 and Pullman 11.87 = $57.07. This is $5.62 more than for the fare south. Again due to strikes and wars. This is -$13.32 more than last year.

East Northfield, Man September 11th 1942. That in good health I am starting, on the advice of Professor Chittenden, on The Northfield Hotel for a stay of two weeks or maybe three. Left New Haven at 7.50 A.M. in a coach car for E. Northfield. Paid my way $2.63. Had no trouble to secure a double seat, and others some had the same space but could not get a seat in the Pullman. Soldiers in evidence both ways and especially at Springfield. Arrived E.N. at 2.30 P.M., and an auto takes one across the river - a drive for two miles for $2 cents. The room and board is $4 per week. I find the hotel, environment, and the guests all delightful, but as here I am still the poor missing bachelor.

East Northfield During my stay here at the North- fied Hotel, I met the widow of Professor Phippen, a mathematician at Yale College; Mr and Mrs Phippen Boodruff of Yale Univ.; and Armstrong's oldest son of the famous "Ford-Bradle" high clan board- ing house, where for several years I had my meals. While at E. Northfield I had a most delightful letter from Professor Percy E. Ray- mond telling me of some of his discoveries in the Canter-Ord. of A.W. Vermont. On Sep. 30, I wrote him an 8 page letter commenting on his results changing some of these & published an erratum in J of 1937. Asked him for re- marks, and to return one all that that writer, since I want to correct his part of my Greats Acadia for vol. III of my Final Taunt Book on A.R. Stratigraphy. Told P. that letter and mailed send him a type-written copy of my letter of Sep. 30

East Northfield. While here I read Lull's Memoir on the Hadrosaurus and wrote him a congratulatory letter. This letter pleased him much. Lull studied P.J. Stroganow's Paleops falso graphy plorjima (Bull. G.S.A., vol. 1942; 1255-1282), and found it a promising memoir that only helps one much in perfecting my maps for North. I'll write him from Yale care and send me an extract. East Northfield. October 2-42 On a bright cool morning I leave the Northfield Hotel for And Overen at 10:46 A.M. Had a most delightful week here, with my health partially re- stored, and let us hope the latter does continue.
