Found injured (and starving as indicated by light weight) at IBP Site 1, Barrow, Alaska, 6-23-72. Ova to 4 mm. 1972-3 Phalaropus fulicarius ♀ 51.1 g. Found injured near Voth Slough, Barrow, Alaska, 7-6-72. Ova to 1 mm. 1972-4 Calidris melanotos ♀ 58.2 g. Collected by F.A. Pitelka in Voth Slough, Barrow, Alaska, 7-9-72. Four two to follicles recently collapsed (probably laid eggs three days earlier according to. F.A.P.). Light fat. 1972-5 Xema sabini ♀ 139.7 g. Found dead at Point Barrow, Alaska by Don Schell on 7-11-72. Ova to 2 mm. No fat. 1972-6 Calidris melanotos ♀ 55.5 g. Collected by Tom Custer 2 miles south of Barrow Village, Alaska, 7-21-72. Ova < 1 mm, Light fat. 1972-7 Calcarius lapponicus ?sex JW, No wt. Found at Site 2 with broken wing (IBP site, Barrow, Alaska) 7-30-72, where it was found on 7-20 by Jeff Myll but not collected. Found one with 2 eggs. Shown another found previously near Britton site by TWC with 4 eggs. Males singing vigorously. Density low according to TWC Shorebird courtship: Semipalmated Sandpipers and Punlins both giving flight songs frequently. One Pectoral inflating chest. Curlew Sandpipers apparently paired. Phalaropes frequently engaged in chases, usually involving three birds. Migration: no obvious migration noted other than jaegers noted above

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Journal Lemmings: 4 at IBP site. Predators: no jaegers seen moving northE, all 5 sitting on tundra near IBP side, but didn't stay long. No owls. Longspurs: recorded feeding observations with TWC 2000-2130 1015-1200. Alone from 0800-0'. Makes chasing other males when near female. Shorebird courtship: Pectoral seen inflating chest for female, making deep booming sound as he displayed. Turnstones also giving flight song. Curlew Sandpipers looked for but not seen. Density much lower today - more spread out due to melt-off. Baird's also seen displaying - sounds much like a Dunlin. Wingbeats in flight display slow like a hawk. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Journal From vantage points such as Village Ridge, one can see flocks of 20-30 Glaucoous Gulls just resting on the fundra. Longspurs: Chanced time lapse films at approximately 0845, moving one camera off a Red Phalarope nest and back to previous longspur nest. Time-activity plus territory data gathered from 0930-1200, 2030- 2200. Female at nest 1 seen to viciously chase male SY-YR (color band combo); male SY-RB is the male attending that female. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Journal Red Phalarope 25 Pomarine Jaeger 10 - and F.A.P. Arctic Tern 2 Glaucous Gull 20 Snowy Owl 3 Lapland Longspur 30 Snow Bunting 10 Hoary Redpoll 1 Lemmings: 15 Brown Lemmings seen at TBP site 1. Predators: A female observed brooding in marshy area SW of site 1, but there were no eggs - only a hollow scooped out in the grass. She then proceeded to catch a lemming and when a male arrived they tugged and pulled at it and then faced each other upright in some sort of display. Male then stood on female's back, stomping up and down and screaming at her. He then retreated into copulation position, but only for a brief moment. This was repeated again 3 times, with each duration of copulation position becoming longer. Dawn Pomarine observed over site 1. Pomarine seen chasing adult Glaucous Gull viciously. 3 Snowy Owls (2♂ 1♀) seen from Village Ridge. Longspurs: Nest found with 7 eggs n. of trap 13 on site 1. Traps opened between 0845-0945, closed at 2030-2100; checked at 1100, 1400, 1600, 2000; only four captures of three birds (all males, one new) despite cold weather. Female of nest 1 chased another

Shorebirds: 2 Buff-breasted displaying just e. of "calleater" at site 1. Males flew up suddenly from the ground and then back down again; maybe to 3 feet up, flapping vigorously. They acted crazy, jumping up and down in these short flights. Twice they ascended maybe 40 feet up together within 2 feet of each other, then fluttered near each other in one spot for 10 seconds, then fluttered back down. Occasionally one would raise a wing, exposing the pure white underwings. One was seen to arch his wings forward as if to hug somebody. One was chased violently by a male longspur, once on the ground and once while fluttering in the air. Feeding observations 0900-1100 and with TWC 1445-1630 Shorebirds: White-rumped Sandpiper displaying at same spot as yesterday - only one bird could be found. Seen to displace and chase Semipalmated. Bairds also seen to chase Semipalmated - New Semipalmated nest found w. of road near cattle-eater - 4 eggs. Buff-breasted still is same place. Continued to display. They don't just hold their wings up but they rotate it backwards actively. There may be some polygamy on JBP site 1. The male attending both nests 6 and 2 is color banded SY-RY. He drives away other males from both nest sites. There is a possibility that one may be SW-RY - has to be double- checked. Males will chase away other males when close to the & Longspur seen to chase away a Hoary nest, but not always. Redpoll as soon as it landed near him. Shorebirds: ♀ Curlew Sandpiper at Nest 1 returned to her nest after about 5 minutes of hesitation when camera and alarm clock placed at the nest. Dr. Pitelka saw two male Curlews give a territorial dispute display consisting of jumping up in the air next to each other - similar to Buff-breasted display. This is really beautiful because it makes the picture more certain that the Curlew is the evolutionary transition between the social systems of Pectoral and Buff-breasted. Dr. Pitelka also observed a Pectoral attempt to supplant a Curlew from a mound, but retreated when the Curlew flashed his wings - raised it up like a Baird's. Pectoral Sandpiper seen to chase a Semipalmated for 10 seconds, Migration: 2 loons heard overhead. 3 Whistling Swans flushed from near trapline III and they eventually headed west. 1 Western Sandpiper at Vagrant Pond.

Meadow Lane 6 Snowy Owls within 1/2 mile of each other along northern end of Gasline Ridge Longspurs: Opened JBP trap grid at 0830, Checked at 1100, 1330, 1630, 2030, and 2230. 4 new traps placed out today; these 4 plus the 2 I placed out last time accounted for 100% of the longspur catch - mostly new males but some good recaptures for males from known nests far away from these nests. Changed films at 2330-2400. Shorebirds: Flocks of 20 and 8 Pectoral Sandpipers (non-breeders) seen, 5 Pectorals chasing 1 female. Pectoral chased Dunlin for 2 seconds N/1, N/2 3 Red Phalarope nests found: 2 on JBP site, one in Voth Slough (N/4) 4 Buff-breasted Sandpipers on JBP site 1 were not doing any displaying, probably because of the bad weather. 3 were on the west side of site 1 and one was east of the cane-eater. 3 Long-billed Dowitchers flew over site 1, Culey Sandpiper nest camera film changed 2330. Followed SY-RB for 2 hours. 2 females seen bathing in Voth Creek while 2 males looked on. * Chansed nest IBP-2 to 8 sec intervals at 0900. One unbanded bird weighed 36.4g. Ran trap lines plus checked nests 0930-1200, 1330-1730, 1830-2230. Looked for Curlew Sandpiper nests with FAP 0715-0930. Shorebirds: FAP and myself collected the mystery plover, named "Tee-Lew-eee" for his clear whistle which is Am. unlike the Golden. More white on sides and on wings may mean Pluvialis apricaria, but final determination not certain. 2 Buffies seen NW of site 1 and 1 on road at site 1 - no displays noted by me (but FAP did note some). One juvenile Dunlin seen which could fly well (unbanded in Voth Slough). Two flying juvenile Pectorals were also seen (unbanded in Voth Slough). A group of 12 apparent juveniles (very buffy chested) seen at Voth Creek at Site 1, all unbanded; they were definitely Semipalmated, and not Bairds - I got very close. Collected 15 birds along Village Ridge with TWC 1330-1600; only one banded bird shot despite relatively short distance (1 km) from site 1.; the bird was a color-banded SY-RG on 6-3-72 and never recaptured. Where do the 50 birds we catch at Site 1 on a trap day spend most of their day, since you don't see that many at Site 1 by censusing . The Village Ridge birds also seemed behind in their molts - most males still had heavy black faces and one female had not begun molting her primaries in one wing and only 1B,50,90 in the other. Prepared stomach samples 1930-2100. Coded Feeding records on IBM forms 2100-2330 . Remsen, J.V. 1972 Ross' Goose 25 June IPE site 1, Barrow, Alaska ~ 1030 - Flock of 10 Snow Geese observed from about 500 yds away as they flew maybe 100 feet above the ground westward. The eleventh bird was very noticeably smaller in overall body size, wings length, and neck length. The wingsbeat was also noticeably faster. They landed about 1/2 mile away over Village Ridge out of sight. Then a plane came over and scared them off to the northwest. Even at this distance and flying directly away from me, the smaller bird could be distinguished by its smaller body size, shorter wings, and faster beat. They flew out of sight. Had I been in California, I would not have hesitated to record this as a Ross' Goose, but Alaska has almost no records (the rarity of the bird I was aware of at the time of observation). I really believe the bird was a Ross' Goose, but there will always be that doubt, since no one else was there to confirm it. Chun rossii

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Greater Scayp 26 July Point Barrow, Alaska 0130 - A ♂ was spotted between the tip of the point and the tide gauge swimming with a flock of Oldsquaws. It was definitely a scayp right away with its dark head, and chest, back; light eye; and light sides. In flight it showed a white wing stripe extending far into primaries, indicating Greater instead of Lesser. I was able to get within ~200 yds and through the 20x scope, the very rounded head profile could be seen - smooth - no point at all as with Lesser Scayp. The bird was also seen by Jeff Myll. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Rufous-necked Sandpiper NARL, Point Barrow, Alaska 13 June At 1300, I was photographing phalaropes at the pond at the junction of Gaswell x Village roads when I noticed a very small peep about 75 yards away with a very rusty neck and throat. My first thought was Rufous-necked but I was cautious after seeing a very rusty-breasted Sandpiling the day before. But after getting a little closer, a Sempalmated came into the same field and was slightly larger. The Rufous-neckeds really had bright rusty necks with little or no streaking. There also appeared to be some rustiness on the back and scapulars. The underparts were white, legs dark, bill short - shorter than Sempalmated. They were photographed from as close as 75 feet. 16 June At 1330, I found one at the same place as above, and returned to camp immediately. Dr. Pitelka ordered its carcass to be delivered and L. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Sharp-tailed Sandpiper FAA station area, NARL, Point Barrow, Alaska 11 June Tom Custer and I were looking for longspurs when I saw a pectoral-shaped sandpiper with a bright rusty cap which I new immediately had to be a Sharp-tailed. We watched it for about 10 minutes, noting the follow field marks. crown: bright rusty red, almost like a Chippings Sparrow face: indistinct white eye-line, faint white eye-rings on a brownish face bill: pinkish-yellow except for dark tip, slightly drooping at tip breast: deep rusty red scalings, heavily patterned. Not at all like the fine streaks of a Pectoral - much too red and no streaks back: rich brown with two streaks in same place as a Pectorals, but they were a creamy-buffy color wings: brown tail + rump: black rump bordered by white sides which seemed to extend farther up the back than a Pectoral's. legs: dull greenish yellow voice: silent Tom returned to camp and got Steve McLean, who ordered Custer to shoot it. Will be put up as a specimen for MVZ. Apparently first North Am. spring record.

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper NARL Barrow, Alaska 9 June Pair found about 1000 yards s. of FAA station. About size of Dunlin. Bill: strongly decurved. Male Throat and underparts a rosy brick reddish, White featherings near base of bill. Eye with white eye-ring. Back brownish, heavily vermiculated - nothing distinctive, Vent area, undertail coverts white. In flight, white rump, dark tail, single white wing stripe. Female same but much less reddish underneath. Seen also by G.A. Hall, D.W. Norton, S.F. Maclean, L. Goldstein, et. al. 17 June Village Ridge, NARL, Barrow, Alaska Mike Fitzgerald reported the presence of this species on Village Ridge yesterday, and gave me the directions to the spot. They were still there; one male and evenly and two females. Male was giving a loud, clear, slowly rising whistle which lasts about one second: " toooooooeee<eeee" He also gave a chattering call, broken at regular intervals. Females silent. When flushed, they returned to same basic area - perhaps they will or are attempting to nest. All birds with strongly down-curved bill, white rumps, clear light wing stripe. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper a clump of grass on a high-centered polygon in highly polygonized terrain with several 20 x 20 ft. ponds nearby. The eggs appeared less pointed than those of other sandpipers seen so far; the ground color was green with irregular dark markings. Discovery will be kept secret to allow undisturbed intensive study. There was a possible second male heard nearby and there is at least one other female around, although she wasn't seen today. The male gave his full aerial display twice during our presence, and gave his clear rising whistle several times. 20 June 1400 - Dr. Pitelka and myself succeeded in locating three displaying males in same vicinity as above. The male associated with the nest located on 18 June displays actively over an extremely wide area, probably 500 x 500 yards. 1500 - Dr. Pitelka and I found a second nest maybe 1000 yards SW. of the first nest. There were four eggs. The nest was located on a ridge which rose steeply from some standing water, and was on about 18" above the water on the summit in some fairly dense grass. The tundra of the vicinity was highly eroded, and looks black from a distance due to exposure of organic materials. There were pools of standing water between the hummocks. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper associated with the nest. The vermiculations on the back and wing were colored with areas of orangy-red - not all the light areas were whitish. The males stand on mound tops, with one foot forward of the other, giving their continuous melodious wheezy chirruppings. weee ooo weee eoo weee eoo weee eoo weee eoo weee eoo wheee oo whee oo whee oo whee oo This is the same trilling call he gives in the beginning of his display flight. Chases involving three birds were seen to last for over 15 seconds. The participants were of doubt - at least one male and one female. The third bird could have been either a pale male or a female. At one time, one of the males was definitely from Nest 1 - we watched him from his own territory cruise over towards the Nest 2 area (at that time not located) and immediately become involved in a three-party chase. The third male has yet to be established - beyond doubt seen and identified clearly, although he is probably one of the c pale birds in the chases. At another time, a pale bird was seen to chase a male - whether this was the mystery third male or not was not determined. Dr. Pitelng observed that each of the three males' ascending whistle notes was different: that of Nest 1 male rose to a higher pitch and was more sustained; that at the Nest 2

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper male did not rise quite so high nor was so sustained. That of the third male was weakest of the three - not very loud and barely rose on the scale. The female after-flushing made several cruising flights around the area (100ft radius), uttering a very high-pitched twittering while the male gave a low-pitched, very rich "chirrup-chirrup". The area over which the Nest 2 male displayed appeared to be smaller than that of the Nest 1 male but that may be because we were disturbing his nest. 20 June NARL, Barrow, Alaska Mine Fitzgerald found two more Curlew Sandpiper nests within the territories of our previously discovered males' and Dr. Pitella found a third under construction; thus polygamy is a fact in this species 22 June NARL, Barrow, Alaska Nest camera placed on Nest 1 at 1630, Female returned to nest after about 5 minutes of hesitation 23 June NARL, Barrow, Alaska Changed film at 2330. Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper even a hefty male. In flight, she was followed by three Pectorals which were part of the new flux of (?) young birds - When she displaced a male Pectoral, they bo-red heads at each other head on, and she charged him and he flew. 28 June 0730-0915 - F.A.P. and myself searched in vain for nests of possible 7th and 8th females. No males at all were detected despite no wind -- we were convinced that they had departed. 6 July 0913 - Placed nest camera on N1 - 4 eggs, still. Female had radically changed in her attitude towards intruders from 25 June - amazingly tame. She returned to within 30 feet of the nest, circled Terry Hall a few times, and sat down and began incubating within 5 minutes. Terry snapped a picture and she flushed but again returned within a couple of minutes - He, myself, and Larry Goldstein just couldn't believe it - we even temporarily forgot about the huge swarms of mosquitoes. 7 July Jeff Myll found a nest/4e on Gasline Ridge where we had suspected nesting earlier. The nest was on the JBP Bird Transect. 8 July 2230 - Placed nest camera on Gasline Ridge nest (N7); bird did not return before we left 2330 - No eggs in N1. Removed camera. Remsen, J.V. 1972 9 July Curlew Sandpiper edge of Voth Slough. We checked the other 5 nests 1100-1300. N2: 4 chicks in nest. I collected and prepared for MV2 by F.A.P. Wt. 8.0 g ♂ N3: 3 chicks, 1 hatching egg N4: 4 eggs [N5: unused nest cup] N6: 1 chick, 1 chick hatching, 2 eggs N7: 4 eggs. Thus all nests are intact. F.A.P guesses the incubation period on N1 will be 18 days, but the nest camera film will give the story. The female gives a sharp twittering call near the nestlings which I don't recall having heard previously - possibly an alarm note for the nestlings. Females varied in their boldness at the nests, e.g. N3 female was extremely tame and even darted at us as if to attack, but N2 only scolded us from a distance. The amount and brightness of the breast color was also variable [illegible] among the females. 1600-1700: Returned to all nests except N4 which could not be located. N2: gone N3: 4 chicks, banded, weighed. 74-198301 - 8.0 g 302 - 7.9 g 303 - 7.8 g - still not dry - very recently hatched 304 - 7.7 g

Remsen, J.V. 1972 9 July Curlew Sandpiper N6: 3 chicks, banded weighed 306 - 7.8g 307 - 8.4g 308 - 8.1g cracking egg - 9.4g N7: 4 eggs The boldness of ♀ N3 was just incredible. She approached to within 1 foot scolding me, and brooded youngs remaining on the nest as well as those released, right in front of me 4 feet away. She gave a low clucking sound similar to that heard two days ago from the Semi- palmated Sandpiper which seemed to serve as the same attracting note for the young to be brooded. The chicks nestled under either side of the female, heads pointing towards her rear, just as in the Semipalmated Sandpiper. Many pictures were taken at close range, but with only a 50 mm. lens. All but one chick were successfully placed back in the nest; the fourth would not stay and took off, followed by mother. Female N6 was not nearly so bold, only scolding from distance. On several occasions, N3 ♀ gave a rolling, rhythmic trill which was very similar to that trill used by the male. ("whreeeoo whreeeoo whreee ooo ...") 1515 - Checked the Gasline Ridge nest but no bird was seen to leave the nest and no bird appeared to be in the area after waiting 20 minutes 50 feet from the nest. Camera removed due to possible desertion.

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper 10 July 1030-1145: checked Village Ridge nests: N4: 4 eggs N7: 4 eggs N6: gone but captured young 40 yds to SW of nest; banded and weighed: 7.4, 8.2, 7.9, 7.6 grams. (308) (307) (306) (309) 115- Nest camera placed on N4 (drilla-drilla of FAP) 1130 N6 ♀ not only gave the "sheeoo, wheeoo" call of the male but almost completed full display song. - after the wheeoo-wheeoo came a couple of mechanical notes and then one of the ascending whistles of the male, but softer. This seemed to be a response to indicate extreme agitation or perhaps an extension or intensification of the gathering call for the young. However, in Voth Slough at 1150, a lone ♀ was flushed and she continued 100 ft up in the air for maybe 300 yds and then gave a "whee-ooo-wheeo--" followed by an ascending whistle (all less loud and crisp than a male). Jeff Myll banded 3 young on the east side of Voth Slough between sites 2,4. Mike Fitzgerald also saw a brood of at least 3 unbanded young in the southern tip of Voth Slough before it bends SE; also two lone females together in Voth Slough. Thus there are at least two broods which we did not discover in the nest.

Two young were captured and banded : 74-198400 - 13.2 g 198310 - 13.4g 1700 - Removed camera from N4 - no eggs or youngs in nest) 1710 - N7 - 4 eggs : weights : 10.0, 10.5, 10.3, 9.9 g. Reports from Mike Fitzgerald : 0955 - ♀ 300 m SE of lone pole - intermed. breast color 1020 - ♀ E side of Voth Slough 200 m. S. of Golden Plower nest : [illegible] 1940 - ♀ E side of Voth Slough, 800 m. E of Crags. Behaved as if chicks in vicinity 2030 - ♀ 400m due E. from Cross on W. side Voth Creek - chick-in-vicinity-behavior 13 July 1530 - one ♀ seen on W. edge Voth Slough near Site 7 - probably without chicks northernmost end 1630 - ♀ at Footprint Lane with apparently only one chick : 74-198'311 - 15.5g . She gave several "Wheeeeeos" while in slow flight ; perhaps as well as on the ground - definitely the "come this way" signal for the chicks 1600 : N7 : 4 eggs, ♀ on. Jeff Myll reported 2 ♀ on Bird Transect, one of which apparently had chicks and the other of which appeared to be a wanderer.

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper report from Mike Fitzgerald : 1000: ♀ E. side Voth Slough due E of Cross - Same place as previous evenings 1020 - ♀ N. border of Voth Slough at latitude of Site 2 15 July 0930 - Two ♀♀ in same area about 200 yds SSE of Cross. on west side of Voth Creek. Caught one young from each parent - may have been the only young left in either brood. - 316. 26.7 grams - 309 19.2 grams (recapture) The females were seen to harass and chase (but not as closely or fiercely as a Turnstone does) one of each of the three species of jaegers - 1030 - One ♀ with at least 3 young on w. side of ther ditch 3756 yds . SE of N7 (paced). - 317 7.6 g - 318 8.1 g - 319 8.2 g Thus they probably hadn't been out of the nest more than a day and may have come from the N7 1045 - Another ♀ acting as if it had chicks in the area about 150 yds SE of N7 1100 - N7 empty 16 July 1430 - 1 ♀ acting as if brood close by was seen by Fred Cole, Roy Peterson and myself on ridges to west of Footprint Lane so far south that it could not have come

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper From any of our previously discovered nests. 17 July 1600 - 2 ff between Site 2,4 on Batzli's grid, both acting as if broods present. Both very richly colored on breast. Captured one chick = Myll G31 - 42.5g. Original weights from J. Myll. G31 14.3 g G32 14.3 g date? - 7.10 G33 11.0 g Recaptured one chick on Batzli's grid G31 42.5g 18 July 1000 3 ff on W. side Voth Creek near Site 7. 2 juveniles recaptured G33 - 39.2 g 316 - 38.9 g 1700 - 3 ff still at same place, moving slightly north. All three acted as if attending broods, but only chicks from one brood captured. G31 - 44.9 g G32 - 44.5 g Thus this brood had moved at least 300 m since yesterday and had crossed to the other side of Voth Slough. 2200 - No birds could be located anywhere on the W. side of Voth Slough all the way to the cross, or anywhere (e. of ditch) on Village Ridge, including areas to the north of Site 7. Ron Brooks reported 1 ff on Site 4 and so maybe the group moved back across the slough again

Remsen, -J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper 19 July 1600 - One ♀ heard between Sites 2-4. 1100 - One juvenile (banded but not by me, - Norton's group can't find out which one of them banded it) taken from between Site 2+4 (50 m from road) by Jeff Myll for respirometry, and returned at 1500 to same place - ♀ supposedly nearby. No respirometry data gathered - machine broken. I was not asked if it would be alright to take the chick. Weight on July 17 of #051 - 42.9 g July 19 ? 20 July 1600 - 2 ♀ on w. end of Bird Transed on e. edge of road. Both dark breasted. One juvenile captured - 633 - 43.3 g The primarics were becoming developed, and the white wing stripe was developing; the bird also tried to escape by flapping while running. Apparently the fledglings weight stabilizes at about 44 g. At least one more chick was seen but not captured. The male display notes used by female have not been heard for a couple of days now. No birds found anywhere in North Slough or Village Ridge or beyond the ditch despite thorough search (030-1130). 23 July 2000 - Three FLYING juveniles found at Site 2. still attended by adult. All three had on pink bands indicating 631, 632, 633 were the birds and that they probably came from N1. It was really fantastic to approach 9

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Curlew Sandpiper juvenile ready for a spirited chase and then to have them take off - wow. They weren't extremely competent yet - one ran into a low screen and momentarily stunned itself. The female was still giving the Prrrtt! Prrrtt! alarm call. 27 July 1030 - Voth Slough about 300 m N. of cross: 1 heavily molting female attending 3 competently flying young, 1 of which was banded and 2 unbanded. They flew much better than did those seen on 23 July. The ff still gives the "Prrrtt, Prrrtt" alarm call. These juveniles appeared to have a rusty tinge to their buffy breasts, almost a hint of the adults color. No others were found on Village Ridge or in Voth Slough 1000 - 1130 despite thorough search. 28 July 1350 - 1600 - No birds anywhere in Voth Slough, Village Ridge, area towards airport, Site 2 or 4. Gone. 31 July 1800 - Britton Pond - 1 fledged juvenile feeding. Returned at 1930 and took pictures (also photographed by Fred Cole).

Remsen, J.V. 1972 Phylloscopus ? 11 July IBP Site 1, Barrow, Alaska 0945 - Tom Custer found this bird at the Catle-eater and drew my attention to it. It was definitely a Phylloscopus, and not a Parulid, due to the very small size (near Hinslet), very short tail, and slightly upturned, slightly thickened bill. The only conspicuous field marks were the very yellowish- orange lower mandible, whitish eye-line, and a gold wash in the primaries. The underparts (throat to undertail coverts) were nearly immaculately dull whitish, and the upper parts, forehead, cheeks to upperside tail, were uniformly olive brownish-green. The legs were a dull yellow. The bird was silent. It foraged mainly on the ground, occasionally perching on a low wire, and often sitting motionless as if resting. It was also seen by Larry Goldstein, Jeff Myll, Tom, and Scott Kronberg; Scott collected the bird and F.A. Pilella prepared it for MUZ. It was a non-breeding ♀ (ovq to 1 mm) with fat.
