17 June Village Ridge, NARL, Barrow, Alaska
Mike Fitzgerald reported the presence of this species
on Village Ridge yesterday, and gave me the directions
to the spot. They were still there; one male and
evenly and
two females. Male was giving a loud, clear, slowly
rising whistle which lasts about one second:
" toooooooeee<eeee"
He also gave a chattering call, broken at regular
intervals. Females silent. When flushed, they returned
to same basic area - perhaps they will or are
attempting to nest. All birds with strongly down-curved
bill, white rumps, clear light wing stripe. Males underparts
maroon-reddish-brown; white vent, eye-rings. Females more
orangy - not so bright or so deeply red.
