Pearson 1981 After dinner the young bearded artist who used to work at the bus station dropped in looking for Miguel Pedraza. He is doing mouse drawings for Michael Christie. He told me of a local real estate man who is working on a history of the region and has many old photos: Ricardo Valinstitjova, Federico Profiedolo, or someone near Ougba. Nov. 2 Ran traps 7 a.m., light snow flurries windy. 11 also Longi, 8 Notio macconnii, 2 Notio saldiviana, and 3 Allisomyz. Redwood 39th also. Took photos of all four species. Picked up traps at 3 p.m., no snow on the ground but some dry snow falling (blowing). Only 3 also Longi in the traps, perhaps the same three that I released this morning. Nov. 3 New tires. Visited Aldo Rumboll. Photos of mice. Long talk with Michael Christie. He called attention to the description of Aboda (albrolirth) manscenis sp. nov. from Rio Negro by De Santes and justus in Neotropicalia 26:121-127, (1980). Michael brought in the back half of an Abodon Longipilis dropped by a Chimango near Rio Negro. Nov. 5 Drave to the spot of Cervo Gafay (Colonia Swiss) but could drive up because road is one-way, left at 7-9:30a.m. and 2-3:30p.m., Michael Christie arrived with an Abodon Succus yewenda that he had caught at Temquedan in a chunk of lambor. Nov. 6 Went to the National Park Day Celebration at Perto Munero square and the "tea" following it, Don Diego Nail was there and said the last end of the real production of the last leucoro flowering was 1941, an old friend

collected pellets along the cliff, etc. Couldn't stratify the ones in the chute. Saw 2 vicuñan off claro; large and quite tame. As we were returning to car 3 scurrying-looking gambores or howler monkeys approached Sage, asked if he was hunting, and said that we were indeed on Est. Tachuel (or at least on the lower Estación). Shortly afterwards we saw them, dismounted, at the base of the cliff, probably hunting vicuñas. Sage's 20 traps, half located with tame, half with carrion and equally divided, caught 2 also longi and 2 Notos Valdivianus x Amula's and my lines caught 3 audisamps, 1 Notos rodin, 2 Oryz, 13 also. longi = 23 total. Drove west to Arroyo Vuelta and shivered bad levels in a pleasant grove along stream. Sage collected lizards on top of the cliffs and along the road: Sceloporus labrovis, Sceloporus altissimus, L. labrovis (near barn), S. burgeri (red-tailed), L. boulengeri, and Sidemutis kingi in sandy place (yellow belly, black top, some reddish). a couple of quarts of Agidulabo grounds pellets (Brutus fuscens) contained almost no bones, almost entirely have fur, some feathers. Nov.11 Manuel Christos came in with one owl pellets from the burned area on the way up to Refugio Morayes, contain two audisamps (or Cano Carbon), Drove out to Centro Atunus and met a Canadian nuclear physicist (Bill Walker) interested in birding and a Virginian and his wife (Whitlaw). Beason 1981 44 Nov. 12 at 4 p.m., we all (AK, Pat, Dick, Sage) set traps in the Coihue-Cipres-Bambus on the Elbo-Elbo Peninsula. Very little herbaceous cover, mostly just bambus leaves. No Barberia or Ripes in the forest but quite a bit along the road, no saplings or seedlings in the forest but lots of Coihues seedlings along the road, a big Coihue bed fallen across the road and apparently knocked down a couple of others which had then been burned (by the meditaters?). It burned about 50 yards up the slope also food killed some bambus on a couple large Coihues. They seem not to be very fire resistant. In addition to above traps, put 5 steel traps at a big road culvert at the lush hills marsh and pond (at 40 sherman) at one end of it. Dick had (19) MS and [illegible] 3 cage traps; AK 72; op 22+17 The at 7:30 we put traps in lush grass in the "rough" of the Elbo-Elbo golf course, which probably hasn't been grazed for 30 years or more. Some of it brushy grass, lots of it quite dense. Remnants not visible from above, but when parted or scooped away, could see many small bare depressed remnants. Saw no castings or droppings. AK put out 20 MS at 17-28; Dick put out 20 MS, op. 22-28+ 18 M.S. Total traps 133 ingras and 97 in bambus-coihue Nov. 13 Beautiful clear morning. Put the golf-course traps at 8:30 a.m. My line, all in grassy places, caught 1 Notio noldiv., 1 Oryz, and 4 other cricidae. Anita caught 4 Oryz and 3 also divin; Dick caught 1 Aulacomya and 1 also divin; the former in conifers at edge of the golf course. Note no also lepis in 133 traps.

and a landlocked salmon. Jacklighting after dark produced only a 1/2-grown rolfish (here). mar. 15 foggy & steppin'. Night clear, calm. A half-dozen fisherman along stream at various times (yesterday was first day of the season). Anita's traps in bassel, cipres', etc. caught one also dead. My line caught 2 also longi alive (released), 1 also longi dead, and 1 also olive in some kind of set and isolated as the longi. At 9:30 a.m. set 4 gaffar traps at the only "colony" of trees that we have seen here. Fish trucks in the red, and probably another smaller carniore. During the day caught 1 tree (no song). My line caught 1 also longi (released) during the day. Off the line out, on this side of the river are a few seemingly little clumps of bamboo. On the steep north-facing slope are a few big tall clumps. Higher up on the north-facing slope is a thin fringe of bare, ribbon-dried longi like that on the Argyle pass, caught a 13-inch brown trout at dusk, in chews in a small trap & bassel also * here it is clearly the last fringe of longi before on dead cipres', the longi acoboparada. mar. 16 night clear & calm, day sunny. My traps lie along the 50-year-old log fence in forest, lots of young cipres' and carline, caught 1 live also longi and 3 dead. Fish trucks in red. One more tree caught, still no song. Why no Orpynys? Saw a large rat in the garalog dumps (base of old motor-tracks near mill) last night. One steel trap and 4 MS didn't catch him. bassel, strawberry, trilemium, and yellow spike are all in bloom. In spite of the dry aspect of the

Varenas 1981 48 Ecología y protección de la fauna y flora silvestre. Sr Höller y the Hotel Seveagua is the secretary. nov. 18 Clear + warm, Visited Jorge Amaya and Susan Martin, and arranged to do a census at the Santa research station at Pilcainyu Viejo beginning next Monday. After lunch Felipe Valverde came to see me and arranged to go trafficking with his vertebrato class. Then drove out to Estancia Corrales looking for new pine plantations. The campo with rabbit-proof fence that we had seen last year hasn't changed. No pines, vegetation same inside & outside the fence, some rocks under the fence. One big owl pellet had 1 young hare in it. Collected a Sclerurus rotiis near the airport - near topoliguo nov. 19 Clear, Diaz Saqe left. Went to call on Jude Hovich on the Fadero because Mrs Hilda Pimmell reported that the town about a short tailed, milk-furred water rat at Estancia Corrales that was killing chickens etc. Sounded like Usuray rat to me. Near the estancia house they have a young pine plantation from which sheep and hares have been excluded for 8 years. Also called on Sr. Francisco Cafiero on Quaglia St., an old- timer who lived at Correntoso for many years, Sr. B.A. nov. 20 Windy and scattered clouds all day x at 5 p.m. put traps on each side of the Senay at the east end of the Lobo. my line is in the "empty quarter" on the north side of the river, all on the terminal moraine. The vegetation was very unpron- monotonous: bush-grass, meso, and a lesser amount of the mat acacia. Only two bushes

Passau 1982 April 12 Bariboscho. April 13 Flown to Buenos Aires and checked into Hotel Rocaber. Then to the Museum of Natural History where I delivered some live frogs from Soger Christe to Jose Bollards. Then talked with Crebo and was shown the manual curatorial system. Shinst shells are kept separately, but there is a card file down to genus that records most of the specimens and their location by case and drawer number. April 14 - 16. Worked with mammal collection. Aute around afternoon of April 15. The mammal collection has numerous Berlin specimens from Thomas Loedeltra, including skins of 3 Jastodolphys (without shells). Took photos of them, also photos of marsuosa skulls and jaws. Some of the Berlin specimens are from his family after his death. Many geper specimens, but almost all are long series in alcohol, which I did not examine. They had no Eumongys (but a half-dozen Cedisomya minoris are so labelled), and no Procony? Crebo knew nothing about Abodon mountolensis. April 17. Dinner with Mario and Cecilia Oliveira and Eduardo Orvelli and his girlfriend. They have made a few minor changes in stratigraphy. He had already talked to Dick Soge in Bariboscho and said "C. Heuser of M.Y. has a complete pollen profile of Cueva Trefol including a new 1-meter sample below 9000 B.C. This new section indicates the earliest period to date, with 85% of the trees of the Waldron forest present; also human remains." Eduardo says that they have re-numbered the sequence and that my figure (and table)

They empty it over a day, same volume as mine at home = ? 250 cal? April 29. Spent the day at INTA dissecting mice caught by Pedro deoffe and Campo Aceto Velarigen by Susan Martin and Javier Vellati between March 25 and April 7 +. 29 Ebyodontia, 8 celandon pauthorhinus, and 2 genus reekrown. They had set a large number of small mouse traps grid-fashion in the 2 canavas on the hill behind Don Josi's house and left them set for a long period, a couple of thousand trap nights. The unknown genus has the coloration of Ebyodontia, the size and proportions of pauthorhinus but shorter tail, and more even more striking than pauthorhinus, front claws enormously long like Vistomyx but not so stout, lateral margins of hind feet with well-developed fringe of brown hairs like Stasomys, ear very short and thin with a retted terminal fringe of long white silky hairs, nose coiffed with a feathery button like a shrew. Rostrum of skull very short. I am surmising that it lives on cecede on the rocks of desert shrublands. = vstomys edwardii Anta says they totaled 145 traps for 14 days. The two new genus specimens were caught 2 days apart in the same trap, within the single enclosure (live stock exploded but not here). April 30. Bariloche. Included Christie came with the skin of a wildcat caught at Fortin Crossroads. They hunt

28 Leptots collected under 2 broadwale rooting in an alamo Tree near Rahue: 5 baltius, 1 argyrops, 1 ?shodon fonthorbum? and sic / tremops/sic. There are no tree on the hillside here, quite and only willows along the stream. There were patches of pillin on the road in from [illegible] de la Crede, but these were 5 or 10 km away, and there are eifers on the road up to Alluine maybe 5km away, and then the forest at Quillen. Would be interesting if the Argyrops ever using the recently-arrived culboms for dispersal routes. Summary of Quillen area: an interesting stratification of Mire, pillin, coybue, and large, with short bamboo and probably the little quids also. The meadow near Zogo thin thin is really lush pure bunchgrass with total accumulated dead material. The big log fence across the middle of it implies that it was grazed at one time, but obviously not grazed in recent years. That meadow had lots of Aconamps leworus and runyops, plus aledor suseces, a. soripalis, sotoryps sedicianaus, and aedsrops near the edge. There were, however, lots of Aconamps on the steep slope up to the rocks where Zogo set traps, and on the knoll at the clearedard homestead where the bunchgrass was not quite so lush. Had been a saw mill here in the past. The presence of aledor sanderii in the pillin-bamboo forest indicates a chiton influence. Caught no Droweoffs, but ants found dead next. most interesting was the specificity of 4 genera of diggers: ctowmps, Aconamps, sotoryps sedicium, and

s [illegible] I guess I would say that you said should it be as an event, or as an event, or as an event? with respect to the price level and inflation. and of course, with respect to the interest rate. or whatever else it is that we are looking at. so what has happened? if you would take a look at what you would call the potential output, which is the long-run growth path for real GDP. and you would say that the potential output has been increasing over time, which is good. but also that there have been periods of time when the actual output has been below the potential output. and so what happens if you look at the difference between the actual output and the potential output? you get a measure of the output gap. so what do we call this measure? it's called the output gap. so what is the output gap? it's the difference between the actual output and the potential output. and so if you look at the output gap, you can see that there have been periods of time when the output gap has been positive, which means that the actual output has been above the potential output. and then there have been periods of time when the output gap has been negative, which means that the actual output has been below the potential output. and so what does this tell us? it tells us that the economy is not always at its potential output. and so what happens if you look at the relationship between the output gap and inflation? you can see that there is a positive relationship between the output gap and inflation. so what does this mean? it means that when the output gap is positive, inflation tends to be higher than when the output gap is negative. and so what happens if you look at the relationship between the output gap and unemployment? you can see that there is a negative relationship between the output gap and unemployment. so what does this mean? it means that when the output gap is positive, unemployment tends to be lower than when the output gap is negative. and so what happens if you look at the relationship between the output gap and real GDP growth? you can see that there is a positive relationship between the output gap and real GDP growth. so what does this mean? it means that when the output gap is positive, real GDP growth tends to be higher than when the output gap is negative.

INTA property, which is maybe 5km E of Canedo Bonito. Returned to the headquarters and about 3pm, by which time it was rain-snow-wind, put out a line of rainfall traps about 15m outside the N, W, and S sides of the two enclosures; saw no good sign or droppings, not even Reithrodron. Amite/plastered the region inside the [illegible] enclosure where the new mouse had been caught. Then drove to the NE corner and put 2 lines across it. The vegetation there was same as on the hilltop where the enclosures are. Lightly grazed, no matacorcida in either place. Then drove toward Camallo looking for a sheltered campsite. Found none, so slept in the car about halfway down the long descent toward Camallo. The rain stopped just about dark and the clouds suddenly disappeared. Night clear, heavy frost. May 11, clearing clear. This site on the descent is quite bushy, including a large bush with willow-like leaves, lots of mata torcida, and all the same vegetation as at INTA. Traps at the NE corner caught 3 Elegusdorata, outside traps in the enclosure caught 2 Elegius and 1 also houndo. Nine around the perimeter caught 5 Elegius (about 40 traps), nothing at 3pm. Relied up traps at the NE corner at 3:30 and set them at our campsite halfway down the grade to the Camallo Valley and put about 10 in Cortadera and all the rest at the base of Mata Torcida (Stylinger palegines). Many of these have been sheared by armadillos. I dug around numerous ground-level sand: red ants (at base of green stone); silverfish; a single large termite; a fewal

The nearest Stygian to the exlosure is near the sheep pen near the spring about 200 m, and only a few bushes there. [illegible] [illegible] the whole of which was a flat place studded by tiny trees, and for some reason, looked as though they might have been planted there by nature in order to give it (and) that much more an air of life. But it was also quite impossible to believe that the little trees were real. For when I looked at them closely, I could see that their trunks were merely thin strips of paper, while their leaves were tiny pieces of blue cotton. But even if they had been made of real paper and cotton, it would have been strange to think that the whole thing was actually a model of some kind. For how could one make such a large model of a forest, with all its trees, and still keep it from collapsing under its own weight? And yet here it was, standing tall and proud, as if it were alive. I tried to touch one of the trees, but my hand was stopped by an invisible barrier. It seemed as though the entire forest was made of glass or some other transparent material. But then I noticed something strange about the trees. They all seemed to be facing in the same direction, towards the horizon. This was very odd, because normally one would expect trees to face in random directions. It made me wonder if there was some hidden meaning behind this peculiar arrangement of the trees. And so I decided to investigate further. I began to walk through the forest, paying close attention to every detail. As I walked deeper into the woods, I noticed that the trees became more and more twisted and contorted. Some were bent almost double, while others seemed to be growing in circles. It was as though they were trying to escape from something, or perhaps reach for something beyond their sight. But no matter how much I looked around, I could never find any sign of what might have caused such a strange phenomenon. And so I continued walking, hoping that eventually I would find the answer to my mystery. But as I ventured further into the forest, I began to feel an increasing sense of unease. The air grew colder, and the shadows seemed longer and darker. It was as though the forest itself was alive, and was watching every move I made with great interest. And then suddenly, I heard a loud noise behind me. It sounded like the sound of breaking glass, or perhaps someone screaming. I turned around quickly, but there was no one there. Just silence. But then again, maybe it wasn't silence after all. Maybe the forest was speaking to me in its own unique way. And so I continued walking, trying to ignore the strange noises and shadows that surrounded me. But as I walked deeper into the woods, I began to realize that I was not alone. There were other things out there, watching and waiting for their chance to strike. And soon enough, they would come. But for now, I had to keep moving forward, hoping that eventually I would find the answer to my mystery. But as I ventured further into the forest, I began to feel an increasing sense of fear. nature's voluntarism developed quickly, indicating in writing numerous, detailed and far-reaching proposals to discuss such matters as "the role of the state" (benefit society around power), "political party happiness", "women's emancipation from man's kindred half-life to a place where reason?" etc. But these were not problems that my ability to solve was well known for; neither did I think they should be pursued. In general, the state of affairs was such as to require more than one solution for - still less than numerous even slight hints from those who expressed "love" or "sympathy" into plunging into "war" or "fight" with either political enemies abroad, international peace and kindness within. And again only did I see, in the situation of being on... since as for the state of things that just became for you all clear then are, "it was necessary to do". (They are as hard as rocks!) I gave her the three alfaiores we had left - which probably didn't go far with her 4 children. March 25, 1974 near Acari Peru. Monday I had a 3/4 grown Ratino (?) and a little mystery mouse in my traps. Discover about 80% of the rest of the traps were spring and empty. CP fat tup the mouse and we cleave out - scratching our arms and ankles where the goats had bitten us. Drive north along the coast to the Acari valley, and the looked indeed. It is a wide scrubland with arryicle river, and we washed one clothes on ourselves for a while as we tried to decide our next move. This road seems no good for long, but perhaps we can hitch up some Guyana. Stayed also the river, just; own trips on the edges of the nearly cotton fields and pastures. I just came also and the ruins of a old house across,

schools, a hospital etc - with furniture stacked inside, Eucalyptus trees and geraniums here and there, and no sign of life. So back to Bella Union and Puerto points south. Stopped at Chala to try for meal, but ended up with groceries. It was about mid-afternoon ties, which is a and the whole town was fended on the hillside r, unlovely, down watch; a soccer game.... not a restaurant was serving harsh daylight, anything at this unreasonable hour. Continued all has some southwards and had supper at Atico - a wide after dark street lined on both sides with bar-restaurants. - the light of the Standard fare - soup and rice with "lifesate" dles or lanterns in covered with onions + a few slices of toast, all greasy. restaurants + others. Out into the wide Spent the night near the ocean just south of street Atico - the roar of the surf more tha covering the sounds of the occasional passing trucks. April 1, 1974 We took several pictures along the coast as we near Lujane drove south. Hoped for some juiced oysters such as Mine we had seen along here on the way up, but no Monday luck. In Cananá we did see market and then up towards the Valleda-Arguipa road junction, and south towards Inogagua. Arrived at the town about 4 PM - perfect timing, since the post office was open 3-5. No mail for me, but we posted a few letters, collected some information on roads + a few grocery items. Inogagua is really a nice old town - suffering from finches going out and too many people + uncontrolled growth, but in the center are good examples of colonial architecture, and many "Izera" houses.

"Look pictures! I & " "Santa Barbara: white adobe" "clean, very close, all painted" "colors, pastel, look a" "lively town-like." maybe that style reflects a feeling of building as well as a larger area. There are some really modern small homes also tucked in - and the town has more luxury items to offer than Jaena, due to the activities at the Cusajona mine. Above Huayguana the forest road ends, and a ramptuous dirt road up to the mines begins. Un- fortunately it turned dark so we missed some marvelous scenery, I am sure. We had planned to fuel off the road soon above the town, but there were no pull-off places, and much traffic. The mine works are enormous, and the road to them is about twice as wide as an average street. There were two areas frosted as "Villas" - we gather they are housing developments. All with electricity lights, up the right. Mostly Mercedes Trucks. We fueled off to the side of the road after we had passed the mine development, and I slept in the car, OP outside. April 2, 1974 Wednesday in Cusajona Frost on OP's sleeping bag. Breakfasted by the side of the road & headed uphill. Beautiful scenery in clear morning air. But I started feeling too bad, so we came down to the level where we slept last night (about 11-12,000ft) and will stay here another night. Out out about 12 snip traps - one in dry gully near cap. Flushed a spinetail off a nest (only 1 egg in it) in a bush in the gully. Mostly sat around - my more grievous symptoms disappeared as soon as we dropped down ~ 2000 ft. Dissected and felled and enjoyed the going

came to Canachara there were several hundred alpacas and llamas scattered across the valley - and sheep! Moreover a couple of little casas were built just up the wall, from our old caps, and this made the whole scene rather unnatural. The sky was threatening & I had a bad case of sore feet, so we planned one way back at the road until a kilometer or so from the turn, and made camp there. Bajie set traps, while I took it easy, and when dark came the hail started. April 6, 1974 Saturday Heard Junantius on all sides of us this morning. There was lots of snow and hail on the ground, Mr. Canachara so I went out looking for tracks while Bajie checked his line. Very few tracks - one iracaiba, and a couple of shot more excursion up among the rocks. I set out a line of about 20 large Sherms late in the morning - it was really quite pleasant although it was still snowing etc. Finally got some sunshine about 2 in the afternoon, and the snow rapidly disappeared. I have been watching a little Galiapogobolivia running among the clumps of Lagenophylla in front of our tent. Got up at midnight to check lines - nothing in mine. More snow all through the night. April 7, 1974 Sunday Nothing in 20 Sherms. Did some tracking and put out 10 traps near large boulder outcropping on basis of tracks. Also took about 30 foldy Sherm and extended the line southwards along the ridge. I thought it really looked good - lots of droppings + [illegible] Ahaolon [illegible] dining while I [illegible] tracking
