The Mary Minturn River (after the sister of Mrs Henry Grinnell) issues from beneath a glacier in numerous streams which unite about four miles above the mouth. Lat 78°52' 7 miles beyond Cape William Wakefield Shoalberay known to Dr Harris party as the Chimney Rock. The brig was placed between the islands in General Harbor store house on Butler Island Dye " " " Observatory on Fern Rock 50 faces Drug and Hotroad and about 30 feet above the water line. Here we raised four walls of granite blocks (wooden roof.) The magnetic observatory adjoining -- shire, ten feet square. Cahino huls three miles from the brig, four in number.

"The observatory was placed upon the northernmost of the rocky group of islets that formed our harbor. It is 76 English feet from the highest- and northernmost salient point- of this island - A natural face of green rock formed the western wall of the observatory. A crevice in this rock has been filled with melted lead, in the centre of which is a copper bolt, eight- feet from this bolt, and in the direction indicated by the crevice stood the magnetometer. On the highest point of the island (northernmost) is a deeply chiselled arrow mark, filled with lead. In an enlarged crack five feet are west of above arrow is, a glass jar containing documents. A cairn calls attention to these points - : Nothing is placed within it" A lovecous (jar was) selected upon a cliff looking out upon the dry desert, and

on a curved face of rocks the words "Advance A.D. 1853-54" were painted in letters which could be read at a distance. A pyramid of heavy stones, erected above it, was marked with the Christian symbol of the cross. It was not without a bolder sentiment than that of mere utility that I placed under this the coffins of our two poor comrades. Near this a cave was worked into the rock, and a paper, enclosed in glass, sealed in with melted lead. Mr. Cary and Bonsall with five men left 15th Sept. 20. 5 days to Cape Russell. Cairn erected here by Dr. Kane. On the 28th, after crossing a large bay, they met a low cairn about thirty miles to the north east of the first depot. Here they left a cache and built a cairn and buried the provision at a distance of ten paces from its centre.

itself from a crumbled base of sandstones, like the boldly-carved rampart of an ancient city: at its- northern extremity,- on the trunk of a deep ravine which has worn its- way among the ruins, there stands a solitary column or minaret- tower , as sharply finished as if it had been cast for the Place Vendome . Yet the length of the shaft alone is 480 feet ; and it rises on a gentle or Federal 280 feet high. Mary Winston River is near Cape William Word. Worlton left the brig on June 4th. Reached the Glacier on June 15th and Cape Andrew Jackson on the 21st Dr. Kane calls it 49 miles from Elak to Awatalo. From Awatalo to brig 42 miles- total 91 miles.

British Expedition 1875-76 Depot of 2600 natives landed at Carey Islands. Built a cairn and left a record at Littleton Island. Commander Markham accompanied by Captain Fielden land in a small bay on the south side of the extreme point of the Cape. After an extremely rough scramble up one of the gullies, a cairn was erected on the outer spur of Cape Isabella, 700 feet above the water line: a case for letters and a few cases of preserved meat being hidden away on a lower joint, about 300 feet high, magnetic west of the cairn

Sunday, April 18th. 1st day. Left Elkh at 3 o'clock this afternoon for Dr. Kains winter quarters and a run up the coast for Bears. Extremely rough ice compelled us to sled to ice just nearly all the way to our camp here at Cape Olsen about a mile this side of Sunrise Point. Hal swathed his feet so badly that to continue was out of the question. I advised that he return to Elkh for my "MacMillan" boots. Al Good-Elkh-o, who is somewhat worried over his wife's sickness has returned with him. Sammie and I are very comfortable in our landau tent with Jewell giving full feed and belly full of cider duck eggs, coffee, and biscuits. Temperature about zero.

Monday April 19th 2nd day Hal and Ali found all-shako back this morning at 9 o'clock. He stopped for a few minutes at Littleton Island to enable Hal to get a small cache or similar cach eggs left there last- summer. I have just had them for supper and found them delicious. A cold wind right in our faces made it a bit disagreeable but a pleasant- contrast to trip here last spring when thermometers- registered 46 below zero. He find caches there left by Fritz - of milk, oil, biscuit, bains, green grape berries, and cranberry sauce. Also jimmican and a tent. Ted sue found each logs. Ab has 13, Sammie 7, Hal and I each 10. The sound looks like a prairie - apparently excellent grazing.

Tuesday April 20th 3rd day Hal and Ah Jor-Jal-Skoo- left us this morning to cross Smith Sound for mush-ry and bears. Sammie and I came on up the Greenland coast getting into an awful mess in rough ice off shore about two miles. Finally we headed toward land and worked out of it, discovering excellent going along shore. A short march Friday as one of Sammie's beach dogs is going on three legs. We are in camp brought up a good broad ice foot-jur- south of Cape Englefield. Should have a fine run tomorrow. Sammie back at 8 o'clock with two hare and a ptarmigan, wounded a third but failed to get him. We are full to the gun with chowder, fare, biscuit and coffee.

Wednesday, April 21st 4th day The southern half of Force Bay was fairly good such as we approached land we encountered three or four inches of snow covered with a thin crust furnishing a poor footing for the dogs. The ice front is very broad and level leading to Cape Ingeroll which is covered with soft snow. We saw one seal on the ice which Sammie tried to get but failed because his dogs became impatient and galloped after him. Also passed two breathing holes. Passed a bear on the talus at Cape Inglefield. He "took wing" when he saw me start. With H.P. Savage at Cape Inglefield there are two or three cairns and a circular wall built, the Eskimos say by Dr. Kane and his men 60 years ago. Will examine them on return. We are leaving here.

"1/2 lbs Jerusalem, 2 gal oil, one can powder and one can beans. Thursday April 22nd 5th day The realization of a wish of years ago. We are located in camp in Rensselaer Harbor, Dr. Kane's winter quarters from 1853 to 1855. Dr. Kane was yet located cairns or records but believe our tent to be pitched near Butler Island where he had his store carriage and dog house. As we came into the harbor I saw a seal running himself. Sammie crept up with "hot-oh-tah-s" but did not shoot to kill. Blood around the hole indicated that he was badly wounded. Are sorry as our dogs are very poor and need the meat if we are to go or much farther.

Friday April 23rd 6th day Visited 8 islands in Rensselaer Harbor in hopes of finding a cairn or some signs of the Kane Expedition. Not at clue I any kind excepting a small cairn on a boulder on a small island on the south side of the harbor. Crossed a number of bear tracks which are at least a month old. We are tonight in camp well up beyond Cape Leifer about half way to Cape Jane. The foot is excellent all along here. Tracks of 2 year and a year old I in front of our tent. One more seal seen on ice today. Sammis saw a while fly ahead of us on the ice now steady going all through the harbor.

(7) Saturday April 24th A long hard march. back to our 1st cache camp from Nannook camp. Soft snow all across Rensselaer Harbor. Three seals all up at- one time gave us enough dog food I left before I could get a shot. Left a cache at Museum Head consisting of following: Beans 4, Potatoes 1, Salmon 3, sausage 2, Milk 2, Hard Eggs 6, Corn 1, Oil 2. 10 hours Friday (8) Sunday April 25 To leave here 2 o'clock. Held up all day by wind and drift from the south west. Left at 7 P.M. arriving nearly at old camp in Ford's Bay at midnight. Sun is well above the horizon. Good going on ice or ice foot.

Monday, April 26th 9th day Good going but a cold wind and drift- Dr came at Kam-mow-ly- stayed at Auritch to look it over. Found there & igloos and remains of Dr Cook's and Brown Murphy's house of 1908-09. Seems to be a delightfully warm place. Rough ice between here and there gave us a hard time. Tuesday, April 27th. Three seals on the ice this. Sammie crept up to within 90 yards, fired, and missed his shooting under. The others drifted into their holes at the report of the rifle light breeze from the north.

Dr. Kane Arrived Littleton Island on Aug. 1st. Cafe Hatteras last of Capt. Inglefields portively- determined Deadlands. Left cable and metallic life boat in Life Boat Cove. Built cairn on western cape of Littleton Island, called Flagstaff Point. Looks Refuge or "a beautiful Cove" just north of Cairn Point, "a desirable Landy from the World." "For Inlet" later called, Refuge Harbor. At at point about one mile North he erected a small beacon cairn and burnt a K with powder on the rock. Wrote A.K. with a pointed bullet on his cap, doing and crossed it as a flag. Harbor is in between a small clump and a valley which formed the inner slope of the bay. Tracked it Aug 2 & th.

Boat party left me 29th Orders to haul brig to the Southward and Eastward w/ a safe berth. In less than 24 hours left boat and pushed forward on sledge. Cliffs measured 1400 feet to crest of plateau. Cliffs of "fibular magnesian limestone" talus at angle between 38 and 45 degrees. We left 1st entered another small bay (Bancroft Bay) "a glacier blocked our way across it" "a succession of terraces rising with symmetrical regularity, took themselves to long parallel lines in the distance. Found here 7 skeletons of much ag. crossed glacier. Mean elevation of want 1200 feet. In 5 days they were 40 miles from India. We left 5th at Bancroft Dallas Bay Here a large river 3/4 mile

wide at its mouth. Mary Minton River after sister of Mrs Henry Grimold 7 fabulous water and a perfect shelter from the outside ice. Storehouse on Butler Island. Fresh water pond near by. Dog house on Butler Island Herm Rock site Observatory 100 yards off On left 20 U.S. Army, canvass and 5 men left the ship for trip north.

Three Rocks. 50 paces long, 40 broad, and 30 feet high. Four walls of granite blocks with wooden roof. Magnetic observatory adjoining was of stone, 10 feet square, wooden floor, roof, and copper fire grate. On Oct. 10th the steaming smuggler for dog team. No trouble until he came to Cape William Word where he found ice breaking up over and ledges broke through. Near W.S. Gary's party near Cape William Word. Report. Left self Sept. 20 at 1 o clock. Arrived at Coffee Large at 8. Travelled alternately on land and sea ice On 24 encamped at Chimney Rock. South of Cape Russell. On 25 reached cairn at Cape Russell On 26 th discovered a deep gorge "Dunny Large" Remains of Eskimo huts. On 28th Reached Cache II

across Dallas Bay. Oct 10th made cache on point A island in Advance Bay. Chain on a point of rocks 30 fathoms E 1/2 S from cache and same distance from a point of a remarkable rocks on lightest part of the island, bearing S by W 1/2 W. "There were two small islands about 200 paces from the cache, the larger bearing E by N 1/2 N and the smaller E. N. E. Reached S bluff Oct 16th. Mr Gary's cache

March 31 st Eulog, Ahlson, and Petersen returned Ewllen, Baggard, and Gardner able to reach. Baker died on April 5th Body carried to Lena Rock. Jimmy Gorge to the North 679 Length of draft 4 50 feet, breadth of Federal 250 feet. Stores and India Rubber boat cached near Dallas Bay Peter Schubert died May 12 th . Being quarrels arrived. June 5th Merlon left on his northern trip. On Aug. 28 Jerry under Petersen began its retreat south. Borsall and Petersen arrived back on Dec. 7 th Others on Dec. 12 th the Berg abandoned May 20, 1853- Look for store but on very joint of Cafe Dequefield used for retreat as shelter for sick this is Anvaton of Kane Lyoh for conical peak in force Bay. At the base of this a large walrus was discovered to dwell. When there was no moon it crawled out to the edge of the marine where

it bellows loudly. May 7th, 1910- Kah-mowitz - 1st day Snowed heavily during the night- while the people that when we left Klah were obliged to plough through about 8 inches. Beyond Littleton Island it thinned out a bit so we came along better making the trip in about 7 hours and a half. Every one away from at the tent: Woo-car-ping-wah and Co-dee after seals and got-after rabbits. Panisapah has his wife fetched on the ice a short distance away. Is cutting up three seals. Got is back with two rabbits.

May 8th, 1915 Cape Englefield 2nd Day Archib, Sammie, and I again in the trail. Noo-car-ring-wah came along with us as far as Anoretah where he left us to hunt rabbits. The heavy snow fall at Etah did not reach here at all. It is even better going than when we were here before. Archib declares that Dr. Kane's winter quarters were in the north bay which is Force Bay... If he is right Dr. Kane is all wrong. Tomorrow will tell. May 9th, 1915 Made the whole circuit of Force Bay today not finding any evidence that Kane wintered there. Sammie took me to the small cairn where he found record of Bousall, one of Kane's men. It is on the forest eastern side well up.

in the bay, a small cairn about two feet high. Followed near tracks with the bay but finally gave them up. I have killed three seals. Have fed one to dogs and will leave two there in cache for return trip. I have just returned from a cairn built by Dr. Kane on the sloping hill side about 50 feet above the ice foot just below the point of the cape going north from Store Bay. There also found a seal's found a breast seal in stiff paper "All Well, Kane Aug 1853. Lamont photographed me and Dr. him standing at cairn. As sun and I came at night so I gave him 1/20 on 11; he due 50-11. Real meat brought - all that we can build.

May 10th, 1915 Rensselaer Harbor Back at the old camp, and will make another try for records tomorrow. Wounded four seals today. Blood all over the margins of the holes; lost tem all. Sammie got h- live just in time to grab one by the tail with his teeth and hands but he was not strong enough to hold him. Tracked a bear to a seal igloo where he had killed a seal and eaten it. The crowd looked as if he had his whole family with him, blood, bones, and vis-à-vis meat everywhere. Saw many tracks near no fresh ones. Sammie did some awful clewing today. One seal remained to long on the ice that Sammie got up and looked at him. Just then my dogs struck him. The traces caught in the heels of the legs and he landed on

his backs home late and sight in the air. When the caves were within 50 feet of the hole the seal thought it was time to leave! May 11th, 1945 Rensselaer Harbor Again I have been all over this harbor and searched in vain for a cairn or a record or some evidence that there was such a thing as the Kane Expedition — not a sign did I find of any kind. Although it was 62 years ago there should be something left. When the snow is off, the ground conditions will be more favorable. While searching Ardis and Sammy were out after seals. Sammy missed but Ardis brought in two which gives us a good feed and also plenty for the dogs.

May 12th Bancroft Bay The same deep snow is Rensselaer Harbor but excellent going along ice foul. Stopped at our cache and to my surprise found 7 old abimos (glors) just above on a sand terrace. Think Kane missed telling there or he would have chosen it. We have two cases for supper 1 Sammie last one, I the other, While filling our tent Arbisio discovered two seals out on the ice. Sammie is now stalking them. Sammie back. It proved to be a rock. Arbisio camped here last year. He says we are close to the big glacier! I do not understand this at all. He came with here from the west southern part of Rensselaer (Harbor in 4 hours. 2 place us according to the map just this side of Bancroft Bay and here we are on right.

of an island where's Orleis says is the beginning of many. He would decide to stop in Dallas Bay! As soon as it clears up we shall start and clear up this mystery, low-car-fing-walk and all-four-all-riders both killed years there last- year near our refuge. May 13th Out on the ice Peabody Bay Raining and snowing when we awoke this morning so held up for a while hoping it would clear but in an cour or so there was no prospects so we jacked up and lished out. We headed about north in order to get out among the ice rings of the bay. It grew- thicker and thicker so that it was impossible to see for any distance, 5 feet-

that we were driving around in a circle to get back my compass did found that we were headed true South west! Again we started .. In about a half hour we crossed our own trail. The had turned completely around to the right. I told Aurelio we were simply tiring our dogs and getting nowhere so we would wait for it to clear up. Within a few minutes we were all asleep on our sledges. When I awoke the land was in sight - a long stretch of coast line, low rounded, rocky shelves extending to the north east. No islands were in sight. Thus for I believe this was agrees roughly with what I could see. We started out again on a line parallel with the coast about

"N 128 East Maguette. At a third time Orleis joined in, Judge traces in the snow whispering "Tè-shing-wah!" (now) meaning that the tracks were fresh. Our dogs just threw noses to the bird and away they went from ice berg to ice berg for all the world like a spinning man calling at cures clapping at every one for cheers. We reached land, followed the ice foot for a long distance, walled through water and soft snow, then for more again as we hailed at a real cote at the edge I saw Orleis grabbed the glass. Before he did so I could see about a mile away a yellowish cloud which I thought might be a bear but was not sure so said nothing. Yes, there he

was stilling "calling" from here to there. Quiche. We unbaraged our trails and agreed upon our mode of procedure and attack. As I had never trilled a bear this one was to be mine. Although conditions were extremely unfavorable for filming - cold and snowing - I felt that I would rather have his picture than his skin. I would photograph first then shoot. Before our traces were unbaraged the bear got our scent and left at such a speed that our chances of seeing him again were very slight. Archie started calling to Sammie and front to larry. Our dogs were dead. They would not move faster than a walk. Archie waited and as soon as we came up

slipped all his dogs and told Sammie to do the same... The seventeen rounded away on the trail and were soon with a sight. Now began a long chase, yelping, whipping, baying, the dogs alternately running behind the houndish we hung to it for a half and hour when a few black dots on the horizon encouraged us. There proved it the dogs returning. They had given it up. But soon a big yellowish-white form could be seen far ahead in the jungle, see, charging and scattering the dogs. When we came up it was a magnificent sight there he stood at bay surrounded. Apparently not in the least worried knowing that with such strength and quickness as the painted dogs are but

"poor pitiable things. Not a dog dared to go in and grapple. Many printed out quickly released or were knocked end over end. I got busy with my graffle going up to within 20 feet and getting fine pictures. Then taking careful aim I fired with H.P. savage 22 cal just behind the fore shoulder. With a roar he bit savagely at the wound and the stream of red blood then quickly as a flash he flung at the dogs and wanted them terribly. Grasping on to Sammie's legs by the leg of the chair he shook him as if he were a rat, whirled him around in the air and slammed him to the ice as gently as a wet dish rag. To my great surprise he jumped up and trotted away with a

"I'm going home" looks upon his face the bear dropped and he had done his work just leaving for the safety of the dogs I shot two more. When the battle was over the scent of the conflict was out of blood. The wounded dogs had each crawled away leaving a red streak behind them. There I miss and three of Sammie were bitten and clawed me very badly. We climbed the bear leaving head and feet in the chin for mounting, I hope at Boundin. With ridge piled high with meat and growing 22 dogs we started back to where we dropped the other two sledges. The crippled dogs following limp and one jumping. Tonight we are all full dogs and meat. Charlie says they never

This animal farm had large rounded balls of ice which the bear had garlanded with white h- will water! this is a general relief throughout this tribe as well as in other tribes in Bohemia Land. Monday May 14th A day in camp. Raining and snowing. Everything soaking wet. Must have some sunlight to dry out our clothing before we can start. Have read Hawthorne and the New Testament all day. I fail but our one what I did to my d...

Tuesday May 15th Leaving camp at 7 this morning. Sun cloudless but very warm. Wind from the north-west. Handled Glacier Carried our bear meat and skins to a small island part of what I judge to be Cape Scott. There we buried all to await our return. Hard crawling as the snow is up to the cross bars on our sledges. Passed many bear tracks today crossing over criss crossing in all directions but no bears as yet. At 5:30 we saw 5 seals ahead of us at a little so I sent Aubin who is our new game getter out ahead to bag one for the dogs and ourselves. An hour later before he got there but one remained and is still with us. The dogs are full. Cloudy but signs of better weather.

May 15th [illegible] (4) and Snow hunting arrived today (the latter heard). May 16th Wed Bear Cackle Camp. A lone day. About 11 hours through soft- snow along face of Humboldt Glacier and in and out among the islands. Saw many tracks but no new ones. Drove into a pretty little cove to get some grass for our animals. As we rounded the point I saw two rabbits feeding on a shelf of the cliff. Set them both. Here we saw two snow- huntings, the first this year, and a gyrfalcon. Arlis said they came here last year looking for burgomasters as they were deef out of food and very hungry. As we were returning to this camp we saw where a seal had left

his hole and crawled off through the crowd. Off these eggs high up in the trail and in a few minutes - we had him alive, a female one. Photographed him in Arctic lap then killed him for supper. May 17th Thurs, Pemican Camp Entrance to Baker's Bay Deep soft crud all day. Followed the ice foot well up into Bay in the evening to find hard going. Here at the camp there does not seem to be so much so snowfeet is good for tomorrow. We are on our last kit and last can of milk. But will fish up both tomorrow about 5 miles below here where Sammis and I left at my last trip.

May 16th Friday Left Camp at 9-50 arriving at Cache camp at 12-40. Stopped twice to kill rabbits. Cache is about 6 miles this side of Dallas Bay. Left cache at 12-40 Summit Gorge 1-05 Arrived at Reussalier Bay at 4-30 well inside Lake Russell. Left 4-45- Arrived three quarters way across Big Bay at 8-30 Lack of alcohol from two small cans fright. Ten hours Friday at about 2'1/2 an hour. Continuous hard going through soft snow- Orlelio wounded his seals Friday, lost them both. 2 shot 2 rabbits. Mined a third at 20 yards? Have come to conclusion that Orlelio is right. Reussalier Harbor is in the next long bay below here. This is one of the surprises of my

Life & learn that it is a good day's drive from Deal with good going. Have States affairs it is 90 miles! This statement winded me more than anything else as I could not believe it was so near.

May 19th Sat. left at 10-10 Stopped at 10-23 Killed seal started at 11-45 Reached opp. side by 1-25 Arrived Cafe Rejso at 7-55 Another two hours of hard going. Deep snow dearly all the way. Stopped a little ways above here to take picture of "K" marked on face of a perpendicular rock. Close are the remains of a cairn within a few feet of it, Probably demolished and stone taken by heavy snow years ago. Saw first ptarmigan yesterday.

May 20th Sunday Good going all day. A fine run to the camp at Cairn Point. Sammie slid a big seal just before we got here. Came by Anacitah as we thought there was no one there but it is clear on our arrival that Pauls and family have a picnic just around corner. There is here now with Mr. Vro-can, Mrs. Vro and Oll-dee so their tent is very comfortable. Have had very good weather to not many seals yet. Hal and Els just about children are back with 5 years and 10 months open. A big crowd of Eskimos are held up at Redwood by open water, cannot get by to come north. It is rumored they have gone over the ice cap.

Monday, May 31st, 1915 A long day from 4 o'clock this morning at midnight and not to bed for some time yet as we are just in from Etah leaving then about 11 o'Clock. Everything had to be tramped very over the hill so it took us same time, 2 snow-shoes to wig through the valley and across the land where I came look up toward Casefatherlow before I was overtaken by two-car, two-man and lady-king-walk. It was so warm when leaving Etah that I gave the boys each a new pair of blue pants with which they were delighted. But before we got to Carakol, they were nearly the color of their pants with cold. The ice was very thin so we broke through in several places. Just this side of Casefatherlow two-car-fairy-walk made a real furnishing ford.

For both teams. About two miles further on we detected a gypseaon sitting on the cliff. Driving around joint we saw her on the wall, and near by a projecting cleft under which the jewels were while with droppings. E. Sayres and all - we who left Etah yesterday, camping over on the way. From the foot of the river valley we went across country over rocks, boulders, sand and a little down to the ice cap. Darkness and a mist compelled us to come about 6 o'clock. It was certainly picturesque. Two fat fires in the shelter of walls of snow-blocks threw out long shadows of dogs, sledges, and men, women, and children, all busy unfastening and getting up the three tents. Saturday, Nov. 13th, Green, Finnied and Sammit off for 2-3 days in-house Friday. No change in the weather as yet. Sunday. Mar. 14th. Clear, dry and cold. Athlis brought in a large seal last night so E took at five and Athalis did not leave today. Slept in Little Rock's two last night in my sleeping bag. This is the third winter with the same bag consequently it is getting thin. The Eskimos according teeth out of seals again this morning. Eskimos here sometimes have canoes made out of walrus, square flippers as well as seals. Boats are also made of narwhal and harwhal. Nov. 26 Friday Nov. 29 Monday Breakfast at 7 to give us a good start. Picking up our loads which were left on the ice we rounded Cape Hendrick on the thin ice breaking through several times and Winnie within an ace o' loose the whole outfit. Once we found ourselves on a solid piece with no way of reloading or proceeding so E- sounded out a path with his seal spear over which we pushed as rapidly as possible.

From what I saw today there would be ease with one or even two assistants -- we arrived at Soultegg reeking with sweat. This is far enough for one day under such conditions.

Oo-Eevo-gaa has killed two bears and before me. Wednesday. Dec. 1. Eskimos at all times. Jinnie came in to get in told at 12-30 A.M. Myan came in to visit at 1 A.M. having just gotten up. It is live as the Eskimos do now - sleep any time, eat any time.

"Grimmie and Co-dee got away for Saturday about 10 o'clock. I have sent them out after meat. "Kis-tale and 2-o- yung-wan (Miy-ai's son) have just arrived from Karmak. My ab returns reporting deep snow beyond Iq-los- da-Gumy. Panic-feal is at Iq- Ivo-da-Gumy.

Wednesday Dec. 8 Three sledges left for Etah today. Because recent rise fall of wind we endeavored much on the ice at various spots. At the Petersen glacier our dogs and sledges broke through repeatedly until finally a hole about ten feet wide blocked our gate. On the other side of this were Arliss and Ki - we also had sleeping on their sledges, the men lashed two sledges together thus making a bridge over which the two boys and their dogs and sledges came to us. Upon hearing their report of the condition of the ice about Petersen, we thought it best to return here. When turning our sledges about- it was interesting to notice how carefully we took each step. The ice was so treacherous that - the whip handle could be pushed right through it.

Thursday Dec. 9 John Arlen is rolling around the bed like a drunken man with an old cloth tied under his arms and a rope leading to the roof to support him. In this way he is being taught to walk.
