1928 Wednesday Feb 8. Today I noticed that the buds on the elms are noticeably swollen. For a couple of weeks the buds of the beeches have tipped the treetops carrying the light green branches to appear almost white by contrast. Feb 10. Cass showed me a letter from a man in Del or Indiana who claims that woodpeckers are increasing there. He did not believe it was true, but said that he would know how to put the statement in his file data on increase? Saw buds. I asked him if he had a corresponding file for Spots or decrease. He said 'no', that the custom had been started by Lawson as he apparently was not interested in spotted decrease. So the same idea is being perpetuated.

Feb 14, 1928 Washington St as I came out from the Dept about 5 Pm. The rain which had been falling heavily, had just ceased and the sun was shining below dark weed clouds. With such a quantity of water on all the branches it was running down on the branches, and they seemed all covered with water. The low hills bright now in there made their look exactly as if coated with a thin film of ice, as was very beautiful. Feb 19. Sunday. Went up to K. in the late afternoon. Took a couple of Dromognetta fucens and several spring frogs from the bottom of springs went to Scotts and had supper with them. Met Mrs Johnson an English lady who was staying with them a day or two. Took the 7:30 car home from Jackson.

Feb 24. Friday Baird Club met at 3027. Bartosh Sheldrorn Fisher Lindin Kalmbach William Eljinegur Donald Willmore Fuller Palmer Richmond. Gretman Walker. Bell Jackson Starlings + Resolution regarding Seahorses, and talk on Seawale by Palmer, The peculiar foreshell that lays bece eggs. over sixty 3 - 12 subyuds. Fritio Alke was in the Office and told me that some Diemystylus viridesccens which he had had in Captivity for some time came from a pool near the gold mine dump near Bullneck.

March 4. Glover Tract. Went with Mrs. P. in late afternoon down Tualaw Valley. Griswoldber clearing 7 honey- pocket as undergrowth has been done during the winter. Saw worth 7 special interest March 7, 1928. Went one with Glover Tract in early Eleven p. m. hours 7 hearing Woodcock. Our walk no mean. I heard Barred Owl. March 11. To Bullneck Brodly with means a foxhorn. We went down to the wood from top when we found a few lots of eggs. The with to the Reservoir. There we saw our 3 lots 7 Amblyptema mex villain eggs, but could see none of the parents. A few Woodfrog eggs this also Went down to Linn but for no one at home. Such a Painted Turtle in its long front at the foot 7 it hoot at our time called). It slipped out from beneath the ice.

March 12 Brody (with Mr B.) took me up to Bullnich, we put on rubber boots and went to the Reservoir, met flashlights as lantern. When we walked into the place in fork left, I Ambystoma of both sides bottom, and captured a good number. The cluster eggs I working but increased as we caught a number. Also look a few Pseudacres and Hyla crucifer. It was nearly one believe when we got ready to leave for bonus.

March 18 (Sunday) Scott Run & Bullen's Vic Departed when 11.30 Got Groat Belauff and went back to Scott Run above the Trolley Line in the grown up marshy meadow, some put up a roadside, & a little later another. About 2 inches. I sowed on ground when I met Mr. Hunter calling a little. Many crow C. Nuttall & Rabbit with heavy wood on Hill Fox or many Robin & Bluebells & Good punch quite bright Song Sparrow & Larks. Went across along woods past Belauff & to Woodburn, and Home to Bullen's. Stayed at Cabin a while Then went on to Scott, and home by 6.30 A great many Woodfowl eggs in Scott Run Valley and other places, Pseudocorus by hundreds calling and some Peepers about 210 Rane sylvatica Cattail Bullen's near the fallen oak March 23. March 25 Sunday. We all went up to the "Farm" in the afternoon. I charged the nest of my bluebirds To the pond site. There was a great man I broodfrog egg in the larger Pool, and I moved some of them to others. Heard a few wood frogs creating a great many Pseudacris breeding and took a number for Miss. Cochran. March 31. In Falls Church (evening) Bill & I took J. H. Riley up to his home after office, and we drove out to a place where he parked then used to be a good many workcarts. It was in the upper West Holmes Run. The evening was cold and we heard none. Many Pseudacris and Hyla crucifer were singing. Saw that feather & a ruffled grouse that had evidently been killed by some predator. I saw the long popt catkins & hazel fully developed.

April 9. 1928 Washington The flowers of the Sheerbush whose buds have been daily expectantly opened today, as the leaves of the Chestnut Oaks were visible. For some days the tulips have been showing green. Elm leaves are almost showing. In some of the warmer streets the tulips and plum buds have progressed to a point where they cast a little shade. April 10. This morning the leaves of the elms and the Norway maples are showing visible.

Sunday May 13 Jo. K. Mattie York Preble and her sister Emmie was in town. In the afternoon we lost Mattie (Emmie was ill) up to the place - as she had changed her plews and had left back some than we swept. We could stay only a few minutes. The funny violetts and the Azalea came out and I gave Mattie some plants of the violet.

Thursday May 17. To Fort Foote McBride and I went on the usual Spring Bird census. Met him at Wisconsin & Main Ave. at 3:20 and we drove downtown near Fort Foote Md. Parked at a truck garden worked by a man named Humphrey. The day was cloudy until noon and partly so afternoon. We found almost no migrants, and made my a poor record, about 65 species. After we had about hunted the county we drove across to near Silver Lake, Ind., where Mac had found a large number of Pink Lady Slippers. We found a good quantity in pine woods on either side of US Ford.

Monday May 28 Left Wash. N.Y. at 5 O'm for Albany to assist in judging traps for the Am. Humane Assoc. and the Nat. Assoc. of the Fur. Industry. Dept. first willing to pay give me my time, but after a con- ference decided that it would thus become involved officially, and asked me to go on my own time as I had proposed before. Tuesday May 29 Went to Hermann Associates at 80 Howard St. Where Mr. Slautterback, of the Pa. Game Commission had just arrived. We one from the Fur Association was on hand, and so Mr. Sunderson 'phoned to S.C. Bishop of the N.Y. State News to act as the committee for the Fur Association. We had about thirty sent in any person some real traps many models and some of these very crude. The first arrange was shown to a new trapper trap that had been filed in such a way as to remain at a fixed point after someone without previously punching trigger Shown to a fire type of trap, timbered that can be set -tripped either by a platform or by boat trigger and will also catch more than one animal after a setting

wed. May 30 1928 In the morning we went to the Museum where Dr Adam and Sr Bishop met us and both was over the most interesting part. The exhibit of special interest was the Columbian Pheasants egg, that I probably saw every species in the N.Y. that being included The Ethnological group was very fine. The figures were carefully made from actual casts of the features and forms of new world reptiles alive of the various tribe an exhibit of fossil trees branches in a group where background represented the late a cafe, was very realistic

June 10. 1928. Dix, Evelyn, myself & the Fiddler went out about 1 o'clock. We drove up past the farm and to Great Falls when the right-seed c while then we went on up past Frostville and Dranesville, and within 11 miles of Keenbryg. As the road was bad and getting worse, we turned west to Thurston, and then out to the main state and came back by way of Arlington. Stopped awhile at Hoover Field and watched some flying.

July 20. To Bellinton. Aft home about 7 O'm at Army to Baltimore. Mrs. Fuller, Evelyn & Vivian, myself, Evelyn driving. Stops along there O'clock before we left We traveled over near Roland Park. July 21. Stopped nothing in Worcelles. Left about 8:30. at Bennett Square we stopped for lunch and th. Nails. Drive on intending to stop in some shady place near the Fork and eat. Then Lunch after we had eaten about 1:30 we went on but saw nothing. Then went the turn West just Chester about 2 miles out and went about 5 miles. Then drove back to Bennett Square, then West Chester, both to Cross roads. Then about 6 o'clock meat and a Wife Chicken at 1:30 P.M.

We (I) were up early and changed a bar fire that had become flat in the night were able to get it included [illegible] we were hung Fred [illegible] and got Jerry shut, after 8 (Standard End) went on at a good pace and had dinner on the Stomkuy road after Crossing Bear Mt Bridge found one decided we had best arrived in Grop Barrington Country where there is said to be an epidemic of black measles So we turned north from Amenia, and broke on to Hellsdelle NY. Stopped at a hotel there in a heavy rain.

N July 23 Kilestale to Charleston N H (8 miles from Claremont) We left about 8 and went northward to Troy where Bennington and Manchester. Then across to Springfield and across the River NH. and around Claremont. Stopped for the night at a roadside House in Charleston. We had pretty good luck all the way and passed through some beautiful scenery, especially in the Green Mt. We stopped at a Farm house - Corout - N.H. kept by a widow- named Mrs. Austin. Among her family was an aged man Joseph Perham R.F.D. No 2, Charleston N.H. whom I promised to send some Nature Magazines (Sont).

Monday July 20 we decided to go up Smith Washington. So we got Alfred and family to sit today and got away will before noon after got a better start in his Ford and we did not catch him until he was close to the base camp. We got there about 3.30. We all camped close to the Stilts A.B set out some traps at before dusk with Peromyscus gracilis Molacozapus Sorex fumeus White throated parry at camp at the evening and never caught to all night. Tuesday July 31. We were up early and after breakfast got Stoke to climb Mt. Alfret-Norman Mrs. Strothill and myself went by the Trail, Mrs. alfret, Grettel and Mrs. Pretty by Tram. We got nearly at Lovors start and the Tram passed us near the Halfway House. We saw very few birds, juncoes and white throats being the most conspicuous. The flowers were pretty, will grow. Beth was up on the summit a flor Mt. Arens, Household, Potentilla triauphidata, at Mt. cranberry. m fruits Cornus canadensis in fruit at base, but in flour at and above Cumberland. The day was hazy at first but before we left the summit about 10 o'clock it had become clear. We went by way of the Alpine Garden to Lake Clouds and down the

Saturday August 4 The Horrells went up to Silver Lake and we hot planned to go to Echo Lake near the Stone Face but before we left Harry Wane and Kenneth drove up, so we got it up Harry at the west. In the late afternoon Mrs. Frank Buxton accompanied by a friend Mr. McIntire came and visited for an hour or so. Wednesday Aug 8 to Province Lake We got together some lunch and started for Province Lake wound down to Wakefield by way of Archers Pond and Ospea, and the Coa Road. Reached at Province Lake a broad very shallow lake with which summer tourist development. Then went on to Effingham Center & Falls, and East Madison, where Mr. Horrells had presents; The Sabynes, and took home L. & E. Falls, and The Center (Song of Arrow E. mod.) Caphnorides perypervens Saw a lynx between Effingham Center and E. Falls. It leaped across the road on a pine truck about 50 yards ahead. Spotted Sandhill P. To Dauphin Park W drove up to Danhale at steep into Richard Park Then down the trail to the outlet 7 Big Danhale I saw some brook (front helm) Lawn In woods Dalibarda (still inbloom) Trillium (in fruit) In the afternoon we walked around by the Brunnell Road. A.B. Mrs B. Myself saw large beds I took Lady slipper long out B below. Some evidences 2 Chimney swifts flicking but did not find where they roosted. Saturday August 11. went both me to the Depot and Mortlwoke. I call on Charles Lemonner who is about 92 years old. He is rather hard of hearing and somewhat feeble, but his mind was clear. He recalls that gyears ago his own S.D. had ridden around the square, and that I had later done the same for a record. He did not know who had made the best time. He told me about Two families settling near Connor Pond 107 years ago and built a log house. They came from near Wakefield. Thomas Blake and Sam Abbott (Almoni Abbott's Grandfather) built a camp and cut and hauled logs one winter to Cole & Peasley Connor's House at the Uniters (Stephen Jackson worked a mill (B P Connor worked a mill) Among his brothers were W.B. John, Jeremiah Later James L. Bodge had a mill at its head of Danhole Pond fired at the old Hanson Place near Roland Park

Charles Connor was station agent at at Centrosopher 1872- 1880 In 1883 was appointed in charge 7 Committee to divide the Monthly Scales. The Surveying was done by W.B. J. Charles Connor. He told me in part the story of How his father scared the bear which he encountered late one night by beating on the drum which he had used at a dance. Dr. W. Hodolion told me that the first road through the Country was built from Warfboro to Conway. It went over Tracks Tree to Ossipee. Then E. J. Green Put & Crossed Ossipee River Just below the outlet of the Lake. Much of this road still where Duncan Lake was named from Duncan McNorton, one of the Early settlers about Ossipee

From History of Lewinoll Leo by Georgia Drew Mervill (Editor) Osifer supplied to be from Kogippa. Derivation not certain. May be from Pine River. Water bordered by extensive grove of pines, or "Water spiral out" probably referring to the broad lake. A sawmill at outlet of Darkhole Pine in 1850. Paquakete buried there dead in the Indian Mound south of Covewills River. This has been investigated and has been writen up in Granite State News date ? Benjamin Peeble lived on the road from Ossipe Corner to Dimmo Corner. according to the Cole 9 1802 he was assessed for 1 whole, 1 horse, 2 cows, 6 yearlings, 5 acres mowing, 1 acre tillage, 6 acres pasturing, & a wild land.

Sunday August 12 It was a fine day. We did not go anywhere in particular. Alfred came back from Vermont last night, and was down today. We went out as far as Brongard and took down the freestone. Some of the names and dates. In a weeping willow, two yos Saponekers had a "soap orchard" and three of them including a young one, the grant, and an adult male were busily working at the holes some time within a few inches each other. A hammer was also interested in the holes and kept coming to them evidently for the insects in the holes. The woodpeckers presented the visits, and repeatedly made threatening movements in his direction, when he would dodge back.

Monday August 13 The Whittles left between 8 & 9 o'clock for Portland or they away home Alfred took me up to the depot for provisions. Later in the forenoon we went over to Water Village to see Mrs. Eva Pratt. Found her well, all had a pleasant visit. Then we went to the Lower Beech Pond, a deep front- bordered pond rather high in the hills. We then went down to Ossipee and had some lunch there. Then by the "Plaw road" to Pine Run Bridge, near the south side Green Mountain. Then along the northern base past the home of Benn Bromelle, who rides a horse up at the Gulch. We found him getting up a hay from a distant meadow. It says the White River men had old place before they went there

We passed by the pool surveyed by W.S.B. Conner owned by Charles Past the Moore Tibbitts place His wife was a sister to Charles Conner's mother (2 miles) Ezra Eldridy place about 3 miles place nearby. 4 miles from the pond at Nuneatonville, where we left the main road we crossed Lawrence River. Just below the bridge is the site of Levi Perkins Mule where all the Conners worked now or less a short distance above is the farm cleared by Pearse Conner in 1821 and later he lived at first in a log house beside the river but about 1924 burnt the Carp house and barn, state occupied When he came Charles Conner had refuse Coypelborn in Wakefield N.B. Besides William B Conner who was born in Wakefield 1873 there were John and Jeremiah who much have been not far from the same age. Pearl Conner sold at Lemon Charles Conner and other Children were born in the big house. When Flora was eight years old the big house was sold to Jeremiah who was to produce the bed of stone and had married and Pearl went back (north) a mile or so and built another log house, and Cleared another farm

Sunday Aug 19. Did not get up very early. Helped Harry a little after a midday dinner. The drove was down to Lyme to see John Page but they were out. We then drove down by some of the beaches, but everything was so crowded that we did not remain on any of them. Went to Whitehill Falls and climbed Mt. Fort Observatory that overlooks them and a lot of the surrounding country. Then went to Medford & Cambridge & Boston via the North River and the Public Gardens, and I took the train to Worcester. 2 places to go to: Providence to visit Sally Bee & Bob, 1928 on Monday.

Sunday Sept 16 Silt & Evelyn drove us up to the place in Virginia. Found everything all right at the shack- Though the icy cows on the locks! I planted the wood lily bulbs brought from Oregon on the hill close to the shack, and the Canada lilies beside the swamp clearing beside Bull-wock to the north of the irises Also scattered seeds of Cult Lady-slipper near those three transplanted beneath the pine. Sunday, Oct. 7, 1928 We drove up to Kalnica crest in the afternoon and Eva, Edy, The Fadder as I went over to Prospect Rock. Foliage in good color, and little has fallen. Noticed that the hickories with the sides vein- ing slate green, the rest of the leaf a bright yellow, were particularly brilliant. A good crop of walnuts, mockery nuts, and acorns. Sunday Oct 14. 1928 We drove out to Clifton Sta. Va. in the new car. Got to the Richmond about 1:30 at after eating lunch in the orchard drove to the Boats. When we met Mr & Mrs Dovah, and Catherine, Hazel, Sam and They are all interested in nature as well life and have made a refuge of their Farm of about 400 acres. They raise goats, sheep, and all kinds of poultry. We took a walk down to Bell. Run to the same point when I went with Dr Wetmore a couple of summers ago. The day was overcast and just comfortable, and The autumn woods were glorious. We left about dusk, and for home in good time.

Washington D.C To Wake Forest N.C Nov 17. We left at 840 Eva Bell & myself. Went by way of Fredericksburg. Had lunch in the woods a few miles, N.C. Richmond, along the long half Jones wheel were being cut for Pelpard and were stacked in carts peeled, for drying. We called on Ted Tom Muralls at Richmond for a half hour or so. Then went on by Petersburg and Henderson. We stopped at Wake Forest a college town.

Nov. 19. To Charleston We left Lake City and drove south, had a few miles muddy work at then crossed the Santic River on a long bridge on a causeway fell. The Santic is a broad muddy stream with steep banks or ramps of cypress All the county south of Lake City in full of Perhark man which festoons among the creek, cypress, pines, Oaks, many limonaks. It is excellent. After lunch we went to the museum, and thendrove out to Beach where we drove on the sands. There are quite extensive groves of Palmetto or W. bean Frust. Back from the shore the woods are thick with shrubs and vines, much live oak. Fries etc. In the evening at 8. The breeder meeting was held in the Francis Marion Hotel. The usual doutine of reports & Committees Election & honorary fellows and members was gone through. There were many more candidates for members than the five who could be elected. There was much debate and numerous ballots. The meeting did not adjourn until after 12 o'clock.

Charleston Wednesday Nov 21 Papers in the Forenoon and afternoon In the paper by Rogers he spoke of the great abundance of shorebirds on certain coasts in the Zuider Zee. Holland. The danger I judging the abundance of certain birds by isolated observations occurred to me. In many cases conditions in other parts of the country will cause a great concentration in others In the evening we had the annual banquet and dined the Society for the Preservation of Negro Spirituals. There was later a trip to several of the old residences including the Duncan and the Williams homes The young of the goldfinch are fed mainly on the seeds of Eragrostis old ones eat plant lice and their eggs. Of 25 sound under artificial condition all but one died after being turned by newly adult stage. This bird hatch a brood from eggs laid by wild Rams. The spring fly at about three weeks In a Trode of 1004 acres when a careful census the ground was taken then was found 22 birds. Saturday Nov 24. 1928 Charleston to Wilmington We left about 10 o'clock and went north, crossed Cape Creek, and the Santee and went through Kugporel To Florence County with much long-leaved grass; with gum and cypress in the swamps and much Spanish moss. About Florence we were out of the spanish moss. We turned eastward from Florence and soon crossed the Pee Dee a deep wide stream here as elsewhere bearing the marks of three floors. Later we passed the Little Pee Dee, at its tributary the Lumber. The latter, a dark clear stream. The soil was sand & clay at falling concrete. Not b. Ferry to Cape Fear River at Wilmington. Then with many attempts with the usual bites, including some few stakers, 7 Cypresses. Found near Lillie Sun about 20 Tick vultures about whist dog near Mt Holly. Got rooms at the Brunswick

Dec 6. 1928. Washington D.C. Attended the Open session of the Advisory Board at The Cosmos Club. There were present of the Board the following: Pearson, Forbush, W.S. Adams Burnham, Boots Anderson Clapp W.S. Finley, Clark McAdams Marshall McLean, T.N. Marlowe Lee Miller, Dunn, Ralston, R.E. Palmer H.F. Stone, formerly of the Biological Survey advocated a short Open season on all Shortbills on the grounds that they had increased. Adams, Forbush and Pearson spoke briefly against this Stone in answer to a question said that the original time on Shortbills was not necessary Wudseen says that there seemed to be never shotbills than at any time since 1909 but did not advocate an open season on them.
