Camp 17. About 2 miles Beyond Oceana, on the Hum- Bold River. 143. I suppose this to be parasite from its general resemblance to Epiphege. But Have no direct proof of the fact. It was quite common on the Borders of the Sage Brush district and the area slop proper. It removed the hand, caked earth from above it with much force-and seems to have partly blossomed before its entire exposure. Camp 18. Amatulle, L. big (inferred) with specimens from Australia & Afghanistan, probably rightly; — This form is the same as G. darvishiana, of Nuttall's Mnt., from the head waters of the Snake, which has been included in G. Tennis's Griseb. It is very doubtful whether the two species are distinct, as the differences are but slight and inconsistent. — The present specimens are tall (1'6-2'), much branched or nearly simple, leaves linear-lanceolate, (1-1½' long) Distinct or sometimes crowded at base; flowers small and rather crowded; calyx 5-cleft, with unequal lobes, about equally the entire tube, sebrous margin; corolla 5-lobed, obtuse or rounded, head full, and glabrous at the base very indistinctive. a) Aug. 20, 1867. The oak's, active Pavanian. The larger form of Oregon + Caffa (formerly 60-100 ft high + 1-3' in diam., the variety 20-6' high, with a slender limb. - fruits 6" in diam. The elbarche prolongation of the sides of the anther becomes sometimes 1" long. The inner prickles are arranged somewhat spirally, lean in Thurn Opinions not at all accurate & mostly others. Certainly a variety of alba - having in the larger specimens very distinct the shaped leaf, the glabrous anther, the same proportions cap with its convex inflated scales - but soon prominently pubescent, only occasionally becoming nearly glabrous + the acorn but half the usual size. A shrub or small tree, sometimes 1-12" in diam. + 20' high with all the habit of alba.

Polygonum piperanum - was collected by Stansbury in Salt Lake Valley. 126. Calochortus nuttallii, Torr. - This seems to be the plant upon which the species was founded, though the very in the original specimen in Herb. Gray is too immature to Dennis definitely. Stems 6-20' high, 1-4-flowered, with 1-3 narrowly linear 2-4" long or more leaves, the radical longer + usually broader (b") (5-12') terminating or more length than 2"-3" in diameter, or perhaps 1/2' long surrounded by 2 sheathing bracts; the divisions of the perianth are lanceolate, nearly as long as the inner, free, slightly apiculate, & bend to be within the inner whorl, brown or abruptly pointed, whorled, somewhat or slightly tinged with purple-yellow at base with more or less of purple above it; the fully developed capsule oblong-ovate about 3"-4" long - 10" long, the wings 2-5" in breadth - the younger pods often giving little indication of the wings. Nevada, Montana & Utah, frequent upon the foothills, the roots eaten by the Indians + known to the Whoche or "sipo" or "targo". Dr. D. A. Smith collected this in distinct from the next. Eggleman in "Byron's Exfud", on the Blackwater, South Plate, at or Bridger's Pass, + by Dr. Suckley & Halotone Brits on the Upper Missouri. It differs from all California specimens of Gymniosporus in having the dorsals and orange spots on the center of the field & is being less decidedly yellow. The male organs of the latter have not been described and are not shown by the epid in Herb. Gray. - The species of this genus + of Cyclobothra (which should be reduced to it) can scarcely be satisfactorily defined upon the inadequate materials in our herbarium, & while none is known of the existing range variations in color, fruit + found habit. Mey.- A low diffusely branched shrub (20 high), the branchlets mostly fascicled at the apex on either side of the numerous joints, thickened at the nodes, smooth, sticky, yellowish brown; sheaths 2-3 clefts, the lobes long, spatulate, or lanceolate, a linear aculeate, deciduous; stamens numerous, opposite clusters usually 3, or more, sessile or on shortly peduncled, anthers about 6, mostly sessile, the filaments three times longer than the sepal involucre ; pistils numerous, axillary, [illegible]

Short pedicel, Stamens 6, connate. Ovate, 1- or occasionally 2-celled, with usually 4 pairs of broadly ovate thickened scales. Anther smooth, nearly triangular, flattened at the inner margin. Styliform process filiform, projecting from the apex of the pericarp, tubular, of elongated cells, expanded at base. Testa double, outer coat slightly thicker than inner, with a thin layer of cells. Albumen fleshy, free or loosely attached to the testa, within the cavity of the testa - subglobose in young and not discernible. Probably the only species in the U.S. - West Texas to California, S. Whales & Nevada.
