Stem, armed, very low, leafy, branched; peduncles capillary, scape-like, numerous (3-4" long), much exceeding the filiform leaves (divaricate channelled stem & flattened) to 3/4" ; flowers few, capitular-- 2-3" long; petals lanceolate, about equaling the ovary, obtuse, numerous, 2-3-celled capsule, and seeds, three, short-pilose, finely fimbriate. Transversely divided. - very small flowers, 1/4" long (3-4") with the calyx 2-branched; flowers mostly 2-merous (4 sepals, 2 stamens, stigmas, and carpels). - California. 4.

Stem (1-2" high) capillary, slender, effuse, terete-globose, usually slightly exserted under a glass, leafy; leaves flat, spatulate; heads few in a contracted panicle or rarely solitary; flowers (3/4" or 12/15") rather large 2"-2.5", green with brown ribs) smooth, pedicelled; sepals equal or sub-lanceolate, acute or cuspidate, 2-3 longer than the anthors; anthors 2-3 longer than the filaments ; ovary exceeding the stamens & style; stigmas exserted; capsule ovate, obtuse, numerous to or solitary, chestnut-brown, thin, 3-celled, equal or a little exceeding the calyx; and oblongish or linear, pointed, crustaceous. - New Mexico to Arizona + southern to the Snake & Wash. R.

Stem naked (1" high), long exceeding the short leaves lanceolate (lanceolate leaves 2-3" wide); peduncle simple longer than the ovary; racemes or rarely filiform; heads few (2-5") flowers; anthors long, 2-4 times longer than the filaments; and sepals, with 5 subrhizoidal. Collected by Anderson (1.) near Canon City, Calif. sierras.
