The genus is between Quercus & Castanea, with a distinct feature of staminal filaments divergent in the anther (in Q. arborescens, in C. foetidum). - pistillate 2-1 in a nearly umbel (in q. 1 in a capsule) - very 3-celled + styles 3, (rarely 2-5) - (in C. arundinaceum, 6-celled) - styles as many - under inserted at an acute angle (all (in Q. attached to inferior angle of the base or trunk) with branched stigma The top - in C. pendulum, from the upper angles) - involucre brownish chitinous, thin, cut, for corymbose containing 3-12 anthers (in Q. bicarpa, acalyx, and very slender, cap with a free non-apical (excluded or included acorn) - and hyponema simple (in C. arundinaceum 2-3). - coty- leons thick, plano-convex, forinose (in Q. undulata, plano-convex, with a fringed and at its back, rarely emarginate. - in C. andicola, remains (?), outside, andulate opposed on the inside) - spikes 2-axial (in Q. 1-axial, in C. 1-2-axial) Diflorous? The oak's, active Pavanian. The larger form of Oregon + Caffa (formerly 60-100 ft high + 1-3' in diam., the variety 20-6' high, with a slender limb. - fruits 6" in diam. The elbarche prolongation of the sides of the anther becomes sometimes 1" long. The inner prickles are arranged somewhat spirally, lean in Thurn Opinions not at all accurate & mostly others. May 2, 1869 - Vine's Caim, n. Oregon - 20° 75. Quercus alba, L. var. Gunniziana, Borr. (C. Bellata, J. Wakenius, etc.) 5-15+44, "Q. Bougainii, p. Mexicana".) Certainly a variety of alba - having in the larger specimens very distinct the shaped leaf, the glabrous anther, the same proportions cap with its convex inflated scales - but soon prominently pubescent, only occasionally becoming nearly glabrous + the acorn but half the usual size. A shrub or small tree, sometimes 1-12" in diam. + 20' high with all the habit of alba.
