New York. "Along the road from Constocks 8m. from Buffalo to 18 mile creek. It is seen in the banks of 18m. creek as well as upon the lake shore for one and a half miles above" (Hall.) Along the lake shore from 18m. creek to Albam burg and along the rail road. (Beckher). At Le Roy the Corniferous extends both east and west for several miles. One of the quarry owners is related to Shorelle. At Le Roy see John Egrie.

Ontario. Collect at the following places in about the order mentioned, Port Colborne (Ramas Farm) Rainfleet (Lot 6 con. 1). Ridgeway Cayuga, De Cenville. Hagersville Hamilton Kuelpl, Hespeler, Salt. Widdler. See first note, Battle Mills near Arkona and Smith Williams. Dundas, Dundas, Thorold in the cutting of the Welland Canal for Clinton and Niagara fruits.

Guelp. In the bed of the stream under the bridge on the Brock road; on the left hand on the side of the road; quarry 1/2 mile above near the right hand of the Speed. See J. H. Paxton. Salt. Quarry both above and below. Fossil better than at Guelp. Hespeler. This place is most prolific than either the above localities. In a cutting on the Great Western Railway.

"Michigan", "Thunder Bay Region.", Highest beds on Thunder Bay are in the south side of Partridge Point or on Squam Bay. Here the Senese also outcrops. The highest Hamilton beds have no fossils but the shale beds below on the north side of the point are free of good fossils, aboundig in Bryozoa, Crinoidea and Brachiopoda. Stone Point north of Partridge Point and south of Alpena has lower beds pro- jecting but a few feet above the lake and are free of fossils. Thunder Bay River. Along the south bank in Alpena in section 28 and 20 the north are exposed. The highest beds have but few fossils, but the archelaus limestone abounds in them. Exposure is to 75 feet. North Alpena is built on a nearly level holding many fossils. More exposure can be seen on the side of the first lake terrace. Continuing farther are quarries carbon.

in the road to Jay Lake At Mr. Phelps lime kiln, fossils abound in limestone. Better fossils are to be had at Mr. Broadwell's in the race to his saw- mill on Thunder Bay River. On the road leading to Tombridge mill and cement kilns is a small hill and near by in the grove is a long exposure of a mile full of fine fossils. Several miles above Tombridge the same strata appear under the bridge crossing the north branch of Thunder Bay River. Thunder Lake at the west end has fossils. east side Thunder Bay Island, fine fossils in great variety and abundance. North of the island fossils can be seen in the shoals. Middle Island has the lowest strata in the Thunder Bay Region along its eastern shore. These are best exposed on the north side. Directly east of Middle Island on the side of a small creek flowing south easterward into Lake Huron about 1/2 mile from the lake extend a series of low hills for about one mile up stream.

Little Traverse Bay Region. See kindred description. Rimmer writes as follows: Petroglyphs. Follow down Bear Creek from the R.R. bridge to the Ledge, One mile west of Bear creek on the ledge are outcrops interrupted by the drift. Several other outcrops are cut with in the next two or three miles. 3 miles east of the dock at Charlevoix are fossils. The last of the Hamilton is found near Norwood. Here are the highest beds of the section.

August 12-1895 Left Washington at 7.10 P.M. August 13th 1895- and arrived in Buffalo R. J. at 12.15 P.M. At 2.50 started for 18mile creek the nearest station being Derby. At this place which is three miles east of 18mile creek Senesque shale outcrops and as far four mile east Took a later train for Athol Springs which is east one mile of Ham- bury on the Lake. Aug. 15. Collected along the Lake front but found little until I entered a small creek just east of Hamburg on the Lake. The richest beds are right south of the Lake road. Another fossiliferous horizon occurs south about 1/2 mile

1 below the rail-road track. Aug. 15-95 Collected along the rail-road track between Athol Spring and Ham- try on the Lake and then in the creek near the last named place to the south of the track. In the afternoon followed along the rail-road track out to Clover Bank but found nothing until a creek was followed north to the lake front and west of Clover Bank. At this place in a short interval can be seen nearly all the fossiliferous portion of the Hamilton. Aug. 16, Collected along the lake front from west of the creek last mentioned for two miles west ward. At about 1 1/2 mile below Clover Bank there is bold cliff probably 60 feet high.

at the fare of which many of the fossils from the upper horizon can be picked up. At the other upper Hamilton horizon Cystiphyllum and Helicphyllum are seldom seen but here the former coral abounds and the latter is not rare. Returning to the boarding house packed two boxes (one ended) by courier P. M. Hotel expense $2.50 Aug 17 Shipped the box by L. L. & M. S. Took the 8 A.M. train for Buffalo. Called on Dr. Julius Pohlman who at present is not paying much attention to fossils. Directed me to collect corals at Williamsville near Buffalo. Also directed me to see Dr. Williams, a young bacteriologist at the Medical College. This gentleman said that Dinocysts and other fish remains

Could be collected at Sturgeon Point which is about seven miles west of 18 mile creek. Calamites lepidodendron and Sigillaria could be had in 18 mile creek about one mile up from where the creek forks in north branch and near Hatesvally. He also said that Hamilton freile can be collected at Spring Brook. Hamilton around 18mile creek. Senessee slate. Transition led to Senessee. 15feet. Sigillaria found occurs after foot above the limestone. Limestone 10" to 18" Corals, Bryozoa and Brack. 2 Richly fossiliform 10 feet Really large of fossils. 10 feet. 4-5 feet. Richly fossiliform 20 feet Bactrospora and Orthoceras. Strophalobia Really laren Styliola band. 20 feet

The fossils found in (2) and not in (1) are Stephodonta demissa, Spirifer zigzag, Atropa reticularis and A. spmea Crimoid, short and abrupt Spirifer mediae. Otherwise all the fossils of (1) also seem to occur in (2). To the restricted species of (2) should be added Cyptiphyllum and Heliophyllum and Amplexus. Ambroelin is particularly abundant in these beds. The only known restricted species to join (1) is Stephalozia truncata. Dr. Pohlman thinks there are too many species of Eurypturids and is convinced that Whitfield scorpion is nothing but the Euracarus scorpionis. He says that nothing has been done towards working out the mouth and limb structure since Hall's time. In the afternoon visited Bennett quarries where in 1 foot can be seen the Batulines, Grandops and Cornifrons.

The tip rock is used for building purposes and all or much of the dolomite is thrown away because of its soft nature. Much of the batlulni is also thrown away, the compact blue layers only being used for cement of which they now turn out about 50 barrels per day but can make over 100 barrels each day. The Eurypteridae are not very abundant and it is understood that the one must turn in to the office all found. Some however get away one of which I purchased for $2.50 a fair specimen showing the perfect anatomy. I found some Perediptia alta and probably the little Orthithete of Hall. It is said that the elder Bennett has the good Eurypteridae. Aug. 18 Spent Sunday at Niagara Falls.

Aug. 19 Took the Main street car in Buffalo for the "city line" and then another trolley car to Williamsville. A short distance beyond the car line in Lauty and Jumps quarry Cornifrons corals abound. Fossitil in certain layers quite abundant and preserved as casts. I did not take more than a few study specimens, in the lowest layers of these quarries there are thin shaly layers with an abundance of coral but unfortunately all have suffered from pressure and are much flattened. I gathered all the good specimens even in the limited exposure. Returning to Buffalo found I could catch a train for Le Roy at 6.05 P.M. when I arrived at 8.10 P.M. with the Williamsville corals. Aug. 20. Started east 2 1/2 miles beyond Le Roy for the Howell quarries. These quarries are all surface dipsage and fresh are

gone and not abundant. Purchased 1 horse a number of Pelczgspoda, Ceph. fishu alporpu and Dictyonema. Later got another Dictyonema of another part. My own collecting did not amount to much. Aug. 26. Collected at a place about 2 1/2 miles north-west of Le Roy where I found an abundance of Favosites and Liphyphyllum. Cyathophylloide are also abundant attached to rock but it is no easy matter to secure many good ones even by resorting to etching. Found also a fine Crinoid. All other fossils are very rare and always attached to thick rocks which dhatten to pieces in attempting to get them out. Have laid out probably enough to fill three barrels. The complex layers are below those of the Horsell quarry, in the chest layers or the lower half of

"the Corniferae. Aug 22-15 Collected today in the same region as yesterday. Also visited the Holmes quarry in the Onondaga, but beyond their crinoid stems fossils are scarce and of poor preservation. Saw quite a number of good Favosites and Alcyophyllum, but outside of a few did not take them. Found a number of ramose corals and cyathophyllids and gnathocrinoid. Later in the day gathered a few Marcellus shale fossils in the stream at the side of the church in LeRoz. This band is undoubted there in the Hamilton at Othol Farms along the lake shore. Streblodiscs tubercata, Styliola and the Ostracods are common to both.

region. At Le Roy the shale is quite black while at two miles east it is blue. The Corn from corn gone in immediate above the Chan- daya limestone in clay beds said to be about 75 feet thick. The clust in some beds is very abundant so that the farmer looked to be nothing but one yard of broken chert, however, the goal is said to be good. Mr. Ege will see his collection for $1.00 but outside of six pieces his collection has no value to the National Mus. Aug. 23- Collected on Mr. C. J. Hill's farm about five miles south of Le Roy and about one mile south of Acberg Chapel. In the small creek on Hills farm the upper layers of the Hamilton are exposed and equivalent to

the lagoon at 18 mile creek below the thin limestone band. On hill place this limestone is also present but there are several bands and with the intermediate shale probably 200 three feet thickly. Below the limestone occur the coral horizon which is about four feet thick. Here the corals are far more abundant and better preserved, the mass consisting of a Diphyphyllum coral species of Favosites some in very large masses, Michelinii, and hundreds of Heliphyllum Halli and varities. Brachiopods are scarce and those present are generally small specimens and single valves. Bryozoa are more abundant than at 18 mile creek. Mr. C. J. Hill (P.O. Ad. Le Roy) will gather corals for the museum at $5 per Hbl. or at the rate 12 1/2 c per hour. I asked him to put up from me one or two Hbs.

He is also to take out of the "Falls" a large Favergite and box it to us. During the day engaged Mr. Rogers. He takes me out to Mr. Wills farm and in the evening he returned for one when I rounded him down to the full extent of the boggy part. Mr. Wills farm is not far from Paradise which locality may be ascertained at the locality for these Hamilton corals. Paetled until 9 P.M. Aug. 24-95 Boxed the Williamsville and Le Roy Corniferous and the Hamil- ton fossils into four boxes. At ten started out in the rain for the Corniferous corals near Mr. Holmes quarry which were packed into three large barrels, returning to Le Roy in the rain at noon.

Shipped the 31th and four boxes by the N.Y.C.E. & H.P.R. Late in the evening left de Rog for Orchestr. Aug. 25-95 Spent the day in Orchestru. In the afternoon visiting Orchestr Coney Island - Somerville. Aug. 26-95 Visited the Bands Natural History Establishment. Of American fossil did not see many desirable or rather remarkable specimens. Of European fossils a large Rudist m'18 from very good; a cave bear pro35-- and large Penta- crinus slabs, three of which photos had been secured by me. The best American fossil was a Baculite 2'6" long for $ 20--

About noon visited the museum of the Archdeacon University. The geological department has quite a good collection of fossils which is practically with the mineral collection, the chief attrac- tion of the museum. The geological exhibit is entirely poor. The fossil collection is however chiefly of European species particularly so in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. At 2.20 left for Buffalo and at 4.30 for Port Colborne, Ontario, reaching there at 5.45 P.M. Aug. 27. Stopped at the American Home. Collected all day on the farms formerly belonging to Rama which are about one and one fourth mile north of Port Colborne in the eastern side of the canal. The lowest Corn farm both on the canal and below the Chest bridge are probably to be correlated with

The Onondaga since the fossils are not abundant and siliceous The crinoid columns are here also abundant. On the top of these beds occur the chest beds the farms or at de Roy being one man of broken chest. In the chest occur the corals which are generally broke due to the flow and channels. Cup Corals are here far more abundant than at de Roy. The chest beds at Ramon are not over 15 feet thick and apparently the corals are most abundant with the base. Aug 28 Collected all day on the same farm and one a little path north where Michelinia's are far more abundant. Andeliin nudicula is the most abundant shell occurring everywhere.

Aug. 29 - '7? Took up a farm formerly belonging to Mr. Stone but now to Mr. Edmond near about two miles north and west of Port Albome, west of the canal. Corals are here very prolific where I seemed probably more than 100 Micheliniæ. The larger Gatho- phyloidæ are also held far more abundant. Platystoma are also common but brochidoids do not appear to be common except a little valve attached to coral. Aug. 30 - '7? Collected with Mr. John McRae at the same place as yesterday and brought away in his buggy about four pounds of corals.

Aug. 31. Collected in the Medina and Mijara limestone at Thord, which is 18 miles north of Port Colborne. Saw name of [illegible] Lingle accumulates which the shell are all commingled. The only other fossils seen in this formation are one large slab with lamellibranchs. The fossils in the Mijara limestone are not weathered out so they are total. are some Stromatoceras and Helidites. A layer ranging from 2 to 8 ft thick of a cement rock under the Mijara shale, and this is quarried and mined out for a cement and sold in the Buffalo market for $1.05 per ft. One of this drifts is now being used for a cast-iron farm.

Sep. 1. Spent Sunday in Port Colborne. In the afternoon I drove to some Corn. farm ex pons about 2 miles west of the village. The out crops are equivalent to those of Le Roy and immediately under the Ranals farm locality. Favorite canade- sin are Argyrospore and Lophyphyllum abundant. Cup Coral rare. The beds below the coral beds which Shentlpy regards as the same as the Onondaga were seen to-day to contain beds of white hard Compact sand becoming limy and lime in the stratified beds. Of the sandy layers there are probably not more than 4 to 6 feet grading into a compact thin reddish limestone which may be the alfer Rutulini or the belm up for trail present. In place.

the sandstone is a breccia made of limestone of the cretous formation and the interstices filled in with the white sand, so then the Cretaceous and Keaternies. Dec. 2-90- Collected all day at the localit seen yesterday. Gathered crinoidal material on Mr. Cooke's farm and other to the south. These localities are in the Township of Rogers, but taken out in the morning by Mrs. McClelland and in the evening (Mr. Cook took me and again from 11th to April to Port Colborne. Mr. John C. Mac Rae of Port Colborne is interested in the geology of the region and states that the shells show the locality in a well near Port Colborne.

Sep. 3d Packed all day. Gleection was packed into Off Hole and 2 men weighing 1220 pounds, shipped by Grand Trunk R. R. Sep. 4. Stopped at the Campbell Home. Left Port Colborne at 8.30 A. m. for Cayuga where I arrived at 10.00 A.M. Saw several young old residents to a locality about 1/2 mile N.W. of the village where I put in the afternoon. Sailed but few Cornifums fruits. The village of Cayuga lies in a sully and not so Valina as called Portably 200 feet of the formation in its pond and since the cemetery is quite soft the country is rolling. The Cornifuns begin to come in at about 1/4.

"[illegible] north of Cagyn. Rained hard during the night. Sep. 5th Started out in the cart with a buggy for a locality about six miles northeast of Cagdyn. On the road met Miss Liny a daughter of DeGow. She said her father collected on Fleming and Anderson farm. On reaching there found the locality to be the Orestan sand- tone. Concluded to stay over night and spent up at Mr. David Fleming's house. Sep. 6th Collected in the morning in the Orestan and in the afternoon in the Cohn farm of which there is not very much!

Sep. 7 Collected in the morning in the Oquossan and at afternoon in the Calgon formation. The Oquossan formation is well exposed along the township line road north of the farm of David Fleming and Anderson the sandstone is abundantly fossiliferous and pure it is not more than six feet thick. A short distance to the east however the formation is quite fossiliferous and the rock more friable. It overlies the Dalhna group in which I saw no fossils. In some places the Dalhna is sym- bolically bedded and in other places is often clodded. The contact between the Dalhna and Oquossan is well shown and while there is no marked unconformity there appears to be a shift or since the lower surface of the Oquossan is uneven

and fill creche of the Dalina. In some places the uppermost beds of the Corallang are then bedded with but few fossils, but occasionally a Corniferous coral is seen. All these the Corniferous chest upposes. The Ouellany formation is litholo- gically and faunaally quite distinct from the Corniferons. Some of the fossils in Halls collection which have said to be from the Ouellangy I now believe to be from the J. Corniferons. It will be necessary to see Halls' collection and determine which are the Ouellany fossils. In the large quarry east of Anderson's the greatest thickness of the Ouellangy is shown (16 ft). On going north from this quarry it is seen that the Ouellany occurs in domes and in some of the depressions a thin bedded chaly limestone occurs having rarely a coral and more often byzoe or trilobite.

The byzov in these depressions or protected shallows are far more abundant than elsewhere while the coarse scaly shore the rock is far more cherty. Of Cornifera fossils I did not see many and did seem but little. At the locality 1/2 mile n.w. of Cagyn, where I collected on Sep. 6, does not show any Oristany. There is an escapement here south on the lower plane has Palms both on the farm while the upper place has Cornifera. Sep. 8 Sunday, No collecting Mr. David Fleming P.O. in Lillo.

Sep. 9. Stopped at the Lamon home Packed up and shipped one band and one try of fossils. Left Cayuga by carriage at 10.30 a m. arriving at Hayersville at a m. On the afternoon it rained from on but ferded at a quarry about 4 miles west of the R.R. station. Could see signs of the Carni fons.. On this quarry is exposed about 100 feet the Michigan beds and the Farroita beds immediately above. Sep. 10 Spent the morning in the same quarry as yesterday. Tried hard to find a Calyminia but was only successful to get a fragment. In the afternoon went east on the Michigan Central about

a half mile where I secured a number of large corals. These are the favorite beds above the Miguelini. In a field to the north of the track there is a slight bluestone and a rock pile shaded that may be one of the Salinas. In the pile I also noticed fragments of Chullary which you must be careful about once the piece are dry them. Secured from Mr. J.R. Howard at Calymna and at Phillipsport for which I am to send him Siluria fossil and Granderville crinoid. Send him my pamphlet "How to Collect and Prepare fossils" Sep 11 Stayed at the American House. Packed one barrel and two boxes early in the morning and left Haysville at 10:45 for

Hamilton when I arrived at noon. In the afternoon called at Col C.C. Brant's house when I was told by his daughter that he was stopping at her county home. Brant had left for one town small town of fossils quite a number of which are graphite, lithus. Sep. 12 Left at 9.15 in Toronto to visit afternoon and to look over the works at the University and Canadian Institute. Next Tuesday from 10.30 A.M. to 6 P.M. at the fair grounds. The show quite good me showing however that the chief resource of Ontario are agricultural. Toronto gives one the impression of a very big American city with buildings are plain but out-

Stanrial Sep. 13 Stopped at the Ogden House visited the Parliament building and the Toronto University in the former there is no museum, extcept a few minerals of the province. At the University there is a collection of fossils in the geological department but since Prof. Chapman has resigned this room is closed and locked out yet so. John de Caw [sic] has a paper on the Christian in Canadian Jour. N. S., vol. 7 (1892) pp. 190-193 Nicholsons on Farnita see same journal vol. 14 N. S., pp. 38 -50. The collection of fossils at the Canadian Institute is worth nothing except a few pieces. The archaeological collections are better.

"The reputation of this institution rests solely upon its publications. The library is in charge of Mr. [illegible] and the collection of Mr. David Bogie, I was presented with a copy of Billings spoken on the Canadian Press of Ontario by the [illegible]. Mr. Bogie introduced me to Mr. Townsend a compositor and collector of mobile. Jane to see his collection later in the day. Purchased of John Critchell 280 Yonge St., Toronto for 6 from mfg. for 21-70. Paid him $36 more for mailing. It appears that one of the Nickel type left by him at the Toronto University were destroyed by the fire which destroyed the museum building some years ago. There are apparently no types in this Canadian Institute. At the University I could not get to see"

the Paleontology collection since Prof Chapman has nearly resumed his professorship. Spent the evening at the home of Mr Townsend. He has quite a collection of Canadian fossils which he wants to sell for $600. His collection is mostly in Swellf (sic) Majora and Clinton also Ontario. He agreed to furnish a collection of at least one hundred Swellf species for fifty dollars which I accepted and on which I paid him $20. He will collect for the museum at $6 per month which includes all expense when the localities are not too far away. Or $15 dollar per month and travelling expense. He has a very fine small lot of a large Hemicyclites which one should have. He was offered $200 and believe that sum once more got him. Send Townsend some publication.

Sep. 14 Spent the day in looking around Toronto and left for Hamilton at 3p.m. Sep. 15 Sunday. Wrote letters in the morning. In the afternoon called on Col. Grant! He's a pleasant aged veteran kind old man. Later we visited the quarries in the Niagara cleft and Blue ride. For a complete account of the trip around Hamilton see Green's paper in Canadian Naturalist, vol X, no. 3.

Sep. 16 Collected all day in the Majara in the quarries on the top of the "Mountain" bach of Hamilton. The grapholite are all from the Majara and from tele above the Majara shale. The grat majority are from the Chest beds and the "House building limestone" im- mediately below also gave some. They are difficult to get and can only be secured when the quarries are in direction. Purchased four specimens of this one, in the quarries. Later in the day collected on farms on the top of the mountain among the Chest jettles. The fossils are the characteristic Majara species but the preservation is not good. The highest chest beds yield sponges and there are small coral shell, flint. Visited the Hamilton Association museum and found one Diogenuma. Also called on Mr. A E Walker, and examined his Majara sponges.

He prepares some of his sponges to show the spicules by preparing a surface then etching with hydrochloric acid. When the spicule show results in plaster of paris and rocklithes. One of this material showed the structure quite plainly. Sep. 17. Spent the day at Brumisky 18 miles south of Hamilton. Collected in the Majaba shales which weather down more at this place than around Hamilton. Gathered some good Archiphycus ladayi from the Clinton. The beds with this organism are about two feet thick and down through the rock the edges of the beds are marked with concentric markings which have some connection with the Archiphycus. I have gathered some of this. It could seem that either Archiphycus is a

plant which grows upon series or it is a burnow. The aridz of Arthro- physcum genus some are quite narrow and others have considerable aridz. In the Nacajara slabs I seeem to Lepidocorinus, Eucalyptorinus and two Stephanocorinus besides a couple of bryozoa slabs. Met Dr. J. Pettit who has a fine collection of Nacajora crinoids. He intends to give them away to the village mechanical school. Stopped over myself at the summer residence of Col. Grant at Grinnna. Sep. 18. Collected all day in the Clinton along the mountain back of Hamilton, gained a good lot of he characteris- tic fossils. In the evening called at Col. Grant home. He gave me a large lot of Melania

pish. In return send him a copy of Miller catalogue and other reports. Also some Mississippi river unios and Amodontas. To the Hamilton Association send in exchange for the reptitiles or have some Cetacean fishes and some Tertiary fishes. Sep. 19 Packed three boxes and shipped by Grand Trunk R.R. One box is nearly filled with reptilites. Could get no train for Shedford until to-morrow morning at 9.15 or had to wait since it is raining. Sent too old paper to Shedford purchase of the Hamilton Herald. Note to Spencer that the museum would not purchase his collection of Hamilton reptitiles.

Sep. 20 Left at 9.15 A.M. on Third road arriving there at 2 P.M. spent the afternoon in the salt pond cut specimens east of the village where I picked up at least 1000 Dp. crenulata. The D. crenulata beds appear to be 10 or 12 feet thick above which the stilt occur but more rarely. The forms from foot to track are Everted. Above the D. crenulata bed there are about ten feet more in which fossils are not abundant. The common species are L. lama, A. spinifoides, Stenocentia S. macrea and Culicora quite common,

Sep. 21 Spent the greater part of the day in the rail road cut. Collected several thread D. monosetae. For an hour in the morning visited the quarry in the field to the north of the rail road cut about 4/5 mile and east of the turnpike. Stopped in the courge beds. In the afternoon spent two hours at a place over by the quarry in the fields. This is the highest Hamilton beds and has A. spinifexides, Clypsea L. lamna and J. macroon, Sep. 22 Sunday. Spent the day with Geo. Kemchaw and McCannan at Salt Lick Well. Paid $5 cents for the use of a horse. Five are grand up from the Hamiltons. Gained old small things since I came up town to spend several days.

Sep 23 Spent the day in the creek at the Brick Kilns, walked quite a lot of coral. In the afternoon examined the collection of Mr. Murphy. He gave me some of the same fossils for which I am due to send to some Trilobite and Crawfordsville crinoids. In the evening called on Mr. Leary and examined his collection. He gave me a number of good things among them a fine Arthur- aeanthus for which I owe an to give him five species of Crawfsb- rille crinoids. Send him also a number of other good fossils. To Mr. Murphy that some of the common Norfolk Hamilton fossils, in addition to that mentioned above.

Sep. 24 Collected today in the same creek as yesterday. Spent two hours with Prof. Hector Currie looking over his collection. He gave me a few things more of which I have any great value. Lend him a small collection of Cincinnati fossils. He would also like to have a paleontological hammer. Also spent one hour in a small abandoned quarry a short distance to the north of the Cincinnati R.R. cut. Mr. Hinman would like some small book for terms in Paleontology. If possibly send him what's are available on the Theford trails.

Sep. 25 Spent the day at Lill more, Roess Glen and Barf little mill with Rev Cynric. These localities are at the fall of a small crudi flowing into the Cave little river. In the evening put up at the Queen Hotel at Arkona. I am now convinced that a number of species are common to the three faunal zones of the Kirkfield Hamilton. Phacops Dana, Cystina Hamiltonian, Choeta scutula and Atyon setigera certainly occur in the lower. The Blastoids occur in the coal zone. The crinids with Tim tagula and Margophus occur in the old shale below the coal zone, with the lingulid J. macromata, Taxoceras Artatum and L. lamia in the upper gneiss with Dimocrinus and Cystina; L. lamia and A. spirifrons from a zone over the

I consider them although the form also occur in a proper condition, fully 20 feet below its highest occurrence. began a limestone in the coal zone the Fossile terrinite bed. Sep. 26 Rained all night and threfore could not get to Bartletts Mills until noon. Collected quite a lot of corals and a Dictatrominae. Packed at night Sep. 27 Spent the entire day at Bartlett's Mills. Gathered another large lot of corals and a very large mass of Fossile grit and rock. Of the same fossil found three Phacops rana, one Taxocinua and two Orthracanthus and a number of small iron- fossilized fossils. Packed at night.

Sep. 28 Started at 8 A.M. with fossils for Culma on Trudged before mid north heading then at 9:15. Packed up all of the collection objct I shipped in the afternoon. The lot consists of 2 barrels and four boxes weighing 90 pounds. While packing about the collector Mr. Mackintosh called and asked me to see his collection. Later I called and was sur- priest to see the great liberality of the tailor. It ended by my taking all of his good fossils of more than 30 species larger over 150 specimens. In return I promised if possible to furnish him with some general work on paleontology and the Richardson and Whitney reports. I will pay to encourage the gentleman since I am convinced that other good material are in the territory.

All well I am well pleased with my collection and trying at Tudford. I looked at a good collection before I came and I succeeded in securing more than calculated. Paid to Lemonan one dollar to have the best locality, no old and expensive flower for he promised that he and the other collectors would send a good return for this investment.

Sep. 29. Sunday. Spent the morning writing letters. In the afternoon Mr. Kermahan took me to an outcrop of Hamilton limestone about ten miles n.-w. of Thedford on Lake Huron at Stokes Point. About five feet of limestone is here exposed. It rained much of the time with a stiff cold wind blowing from the lake so that we did not look around much. Fossils on the weather beaten rocks are not well shown and appear to be rare. I noticed a large Fistulipora, Stroma- tipora? Spirifer mucronata in abundance S. granulifera, Shepherdonta macula and S. demissa. Also apparently a Lophyphyllum with smaller corals than in Dranchiaci. Also Orthoi' peneldae common. These beds because of the proximity of the Seneca "black shale" lead me to believe them higher than any at Thedford.

Sep. 30 Left Redford at 9.51-9 M. at Port Huron I found that I could not go north before 4.15 P.M and that I would not arrive in Alpena before 11.45-9 M. tomorrow. The weather is very cold so that I was compelled to purchase a suit of woolen underwear. At Bay City I concluded not to take the midnight train since I would have to ride on 114 miles on a freight train, stopped over at Bay City. Oct. 1 Started for Alpena from Bay City at 12.45 P.M. arrived in Alpena at 7.35 P.M. Put up at the Sherman House.

Oct. 2 Spent the day at Partridge Point which is said to be six miles south of Alpena but I do not believe it is more than four along the shore. On the north side of the point near where Mr. Me Calla's fisherman house the shaly Hamilton beds come to the surface. Their thickness here is not more than a foot or two all above being loose material worn well thrown up by the lake surf. At this place I secured a number of fine braggan slabs and ten specimens of Dolatocrinus. Brachiopods are rare, The only recognizable corals are Farretia placenta a Diphyphyllum and Cystiphyllum. See Oct. 9th. Also picked up three Cordaster and one Anulocrinous. At Stoney Point north of Part. Point the rocks are too small worn for me.

to take any of the fragile. The fresh seem to be from another horizon since all are corals and abundantly a stromatopora of which I have several pieces. Later saw that these are the Thunder Bay Island and Phelps quarry beds. Oct. 3 Spent the day at a locality five miles up the Thunder Bay River from Alpena. The beds seen are not more than ten feet thick, five of which abound in brachiopods and menticuliporoid corals. Spirifer grandiform is the most abundant fossil. Typical D. mucroeta do- not occur here but a form of D. I found hammering with long and narrow S. mucroeta found at Thedford. It may be that these beds are to be correlated with the lowest zone at Thedford.

Oct. 14. Spent the day in the quarries to the north of Alpena on the road to Long Lake. In places the beds are regular in deposition and thick-bedded. In other places the beds rise rapidly in domes and here the rolls are crowded with Acervularia, stromatopora and also other corals. In these beds I saw quite a number of Dolotocinues. I can account for these domes only by supposing that the corals have furnished the material for the dome and that here the deposition was far more rapid than were the corals did not occur or sparsely. In places on or near these domes dark bituminous beds occur abounding in a small Favosites and Acervularia. These beds are probably local. Where the beds are regularly bedded in one place I saw two to three feet of shale or shaly limestone overlying it.

In other places this shale has been removed by the glacier since none about the rock is striated and worn by drift. In this shale I found nine dolatopirinae and the bygon remind of the Partidge Point one. This then prove that the Partidge Point beds also occur in Phelps quarry overlying the # Geerowlaya beds. It is below there that the spirifer grand- liferae beds of Thunder Bay more occur. The following is an ideal section: Oct. 9. A Partidge Point bed 13 feet B Partidge Point beds (variet) seen 5 feet. and Stromatopor Phelps quarry, Accumulation beds. These regular bedded about 7 ft thick; in the down it is not less than 20 feet thick. T. B. F. section for in line. Hiatuse not known. Probably but a few feet. C. Thunder Bay river shale beds and A. grandifera seen about 5 feet. This bedded limestone bed. In fossiliferous with shale partings seen about 7 feet. Prie.

In B I saw two S. granulifera and collected a few of the same Shepherdias occurring in C. Oct. 5. Got up at 7.30 A.M. and took a fresh fish boat on its round of Thunder Bay to the various fishing place. On passing Partridge Point saw that I had not collected at the best my pains, will go back to this place. Out from the point is Sulphur Island all of the Black Thale or Senerese. First stop was at Scarce Crow Island at the southern end of the Bay. Then sailed directly north to North Point. Here I learned by telephone that the life saving crew of Thunder Bay Island could not come to the point for me before Sunday afternoon or all I could do was to go

back to Telpena. On the way in the Thunder Bay Island tug overtook us and later learned that in the morning could go with the tug to Oturgeon Point and from there to the Island. Oct. 6. Sunday Set up at 5.30 A.M. to take the tug but by some mistake of the hotel the call was set one hour too early. The tug steamed directly for the island at 12 A.M. reaching there at 1 P.M. In the afternoon walked around the island which exposed but a few feet of limestone largely made up of Rhoma- ttites and Acervularia. While there was an abundance of fossils yet are are or were by the action of the sea as to make them of little value. Captain Pearson the keeper of T.B. Island is a fine gentleman—

and has his station in good shape. He entertains well and the crew are all good fellows. Oct. 7. I spent the day collecting mainly on the eastern side of the island since till then the rocks are not approachable and are least common. The entering thickness, seen does not exceed five or six feet. Two feet of this overlie the Stromatoporos limestone and is a black bituminous shale limestone holding a Spirifer, Meristella, Pentamerus, Aceroularia and said a cup coral. Among many of the fossils of this gene are crushed. The limestone belong to the Stromatoporus limestone with an abundance of Aceroularia. The forms give the limestone a domed and concentric appearance. The domes are sometimes two or three feet high and twelve feet in diameter.

one mass of Stenotiporum. On weathering these masses crush gently tree trunks from which they are taken by the owner since the gravel layer of the Stromognia break away in their hands. These masses all very abundant in fact one adjoins upon another and upon which are often found growing Ferns. On these stones lie the black limestone without the stenotypora. level of island broken rock 4 feet. stately black limestone 2 to 3 feet. Stenotipora limestones seen 3 feet Lake The Thunder Bay Island rocks are the same as those in Phelps quarry.

Oct. 8 Considerable snow fell yesterday in Alpena and but little on the island. It snowed today off and on on the island. Oct. 9 The storm let down considerable during the night so that this morning the Thunder Bay Island tug was able to go to Alpena which we reached at 10.30 A.M. Packed the two boxes until noon. In the afternoon started for Partridge Point. I found that east of Mr. McCally's house the Hamilton shows about fourteen feet of exposure. I picked up 26 Codaetern,

Acleocrinus, 2 Dolatocrinus and onagy bryozoa and a few corals. The following is a section of these beds. Thin bedded limestone 6 feet. Coral zone at base one foot thick Blue shale with Bryozoa and Cordasteres 5 feet. Thin bedded Bryozoa lagoon 2 feet. Lake level Bryozoa and Dolatocrinus bed about 3 feet. The two lower zones abound in Bryozoa but are most abundant in the blue shale being almost entirely Fenestellidae. The Cordasteres are very abundant in the blue shale with scarcer Acleocrinus and rardy a Dolatocrinus. Corals do not abound in this zone but immediately above at the base of the limestone zone Favosites placenta, Geciphyllum, Heliphylum and other corals are abundant but soon disappear upward. The coral known

are here not nearly so abundant as at Theford, Ontario or in Newford. Helio- phyllum is rare and Favosites placenta attains to a larger growth than at any other place. Some I saw were nearly one foot in diameter and six or eight inches thick—a feature nowhere else observed. In the upper zone I saw one valve of Sp. granuliferus and an abundance of a Fistulifora. This zone is possibly to be correlated with the Stoney Port Hole in Ontario. Oct. 10. Finished packing the two boxes which were shipped by Detroit & Mackinac R.R. Left at 9.20 A.M. for Petosky by way of Alger since no boat is at hand, to go around the lake. Left Alger at 5.12 arriving in Mackinac at 7.20

P.M. where I had supper. At 9 P.M. left for Petoskey arriving there at 10.20 P.M. Oct. 11. Spent the morning in the railroad quarry and quarry to the N.E of the town and in the late part. These are the stromatopora beds of Brinellee. These corals are here very abundant and will prevent other fossils are rare. Some of the Stromatopora's attain the size of Thymdy Bay Island, Mich. Are these beds the equivalent of those on T.B.I. In the afternoon walked down the track of the Chicago and West Michigan R.R. to the quarry about 2 1/2 miles S.W. of Petoskey. This is Brinellee Coral locality. Collected a number of Favrite and a few other things. Later walked along

the lake front 2 1/2 mile to Belle Landing where the railroad has a quarry. Fossils are very scarce here and got nothing. Walked back to Petruskey along the railroad track. About one-half mile s.w. of the quarry the P.R. cuts through two small hills where I secured a number of Stropheodonta and other fossils. These beds are probably twenty feet thick and have a number of black shaly bands between the limestone. This gone is probably brindleella Try- predleptus beds and overlie the coral gone in the quarry, the Aceroulagia beds. Between these two gones there is a space of ten feet I did not see. The top of the quarry has a clay gone of two or more feet thick in which Fagorites are abundant but other fossils are scarce. From this gone down to the lake 20 to 25 foot the pre-

finding fossils in Acervularia davids- soni along with Stromatopora. Oct. 12. walked out the R.R. of the Grand Rapids and Indiana R.R. to where it crosses Black Bear Creek returning on the other side to the lake road but found nothing. Continued along the lake road to the quarry visited yesterday. Collected a few more of the fossils and then searched the railroad cuts to the p.m. about one half mile. Here found quite a number of Strigophodontae and a Favosites occurring rarely in the quarry. These fossils are wrapped separately and call attention to these notes. In the afternoon packed up and shipped the fossils in one box pt. G.R. and I. 100 pounds.

Oct. 13 Revisited in the morning the quarry and rail road cutting just at the northern end of Peters. The following is what I saw (Keinhehle locality 815). Drift. A. Thin bedded, much broken but darker than B. Aeroularia abundant. 6ft. B. Thin bedded, much broken, Olig 3 to 4 feet. liff buff in color. C. Thick bedded, buff, soft magnesian limestone, in places nearly are made up of Stomatopora 7 feet. D. Heavy bedded dark buff magnesian limestone with numerous irregular bands of one or two inches thick of darker material. Fracture irregular 18 feet. Quarry face Palus to lake 8 feet. The lower portion of this section is taken from the south eastern end of the escarpment in the quarry and the zone A along the middle fit on the track of the Land & M.

I can no Stromatoporas in zone D neither in the southern or northern lime quarry but along the middle of the escarp- ment on the C. R. N. R. they abound in this gone through a thickness Perhapsly 13 feet. Zone C is the real Stromatopora horizon being most abundant here but com in this zone at the southern end of the cut they are rare or absent. Zones C and D towards the north are separated by from 1 to 4 inches of a black bituminous shale and here zone D has other black shale bands. At the very top of the cutting along the middle in gone A can be seen several large Geonularias which Helman take the base of the Geonularia beds of Grindleys. The dip is quite irregular. In the O.&E. quarry it is towards the N.W. quarry while in the upper end of the latter the strata again size. It is probably these undulations and the rapid lithological change which the Hamilton undergo

which had enabled to interpolate the Tripidilepis beds between the Stromatopore and Aeevularia beds. The Aeevularia and Tripidilepis beds are identical. This 30miles afternoon I will go down the lake to examine the rail road cuts and the quarry there. In the afternoon walked down to the quarry on the C.& G., M. R.R. about three miles apart. The following is a section of the quarry. drift Coral clays, blue. 3 ft. Pale buff limestone 2 ft. Black bituminous shale with abundant Stromato- porites 2" to 2 1/4" Thin bedded, pale buff limestone, fracturing irregular and conchoidal. With Alveolus and Chrysopora abundant. 7 feet. Soft heavy bedded limestone, weathering down liberating shells mainly Pentamerus. *......... Crinoid algae present. 1 4 feet. Pale buff limestone, heavy bedded towards bottom with fur finish. Stromatoporae present. 15 feet. Dark, compact Limestone in beds of about 12 in thickness with black shale partings. 9 feet. Lake

Acervularia occur throughout these layers as well rarely Stromatopora, The latter being most abundant in the 15 foot zone. The coral preserved corals come from the blue coral clay. The yellowish shells (Pertamenus) come from the four foot zone and as once the semisilicon corals from the rail-road cut. The dip is strongly towards the lake and towards Petoski which continues of the strata above the dotted line to the two cuts 1/8 and 1/4 mile right on the C. & G. M. R. R. From these two cuts I have much calling attention to these notes. Towards the west end of the second cut the strata dip in the opposite direction from that of the eastern end. The coral clay I did not discover here. From these facts it is evident that the Hamilton occurs along Little Traverse Bay in low un- dulations and that the Acervularia

beds overlie the Stomatopora beds. Further that the Hyptidoliptum beds are the same as the Aeroularia beds since Strephodental occur throughout the Aeroularia zone. Saw Mr Harris for two hours and spoke generally of fossils and paleontology. I stopped at the Rand Hotel. Oct. 18. Met Mr Harris at 7.30 A.M. and began at once to look over his fine fossils. At ten o'clock it was agreed that I should take all of his star fishes for study, the museum to pay all expenses of publication. Harris to be coauthor with C.D... In the afternoon packed up all the starfish 62 specimens into three boxes and 2 postages. In the morning Mr Harris informed me that he had made a will in which he stipulated that the U.S. National Museum had been given all of his fossils as a donation, the collection to be kept together.
