Salt 1947 Journal Cottonwood Spring, Elev. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. April 25 Came down by public conveyance using the following schedule: Left Oakland April 24 8:43 PM. on Southern Pacific "Park", arrived Los Angeles 9:00 AM April 25; left Los Angeles on Greyhound Bus for El Paso at 9:30 AM, arrived in Banning at 1:30 PM; left Banning at 2:00 PM. on 29 Palms Stage (stage supposed to leave at 1:30 but is usually late I'm told by the girl in the bus depot) arrived in 29 Palms at 4:20 PM. Met Dr. Stettins in 29 Palms and drove to Pinto Basin. The sky clouded up and rained in the Pinto Basin area so we drove on to Cottonwood Spring in the hope of avoiding the shower. Arrived at cottonwood Spring about 6:30 PM and set up camp. Judging by appearances this has been a dry year so far out here. Very few plants are blooming, although the Mohave Yucca is fruiting, mesquite, Phacelia, a mallow, and a few others are the only plants blooming. There is no grass coming up, and none of the annuals or perennials show any sign of growth for this spring. There still is a good supply of water here however.

Salt 1947 Journal Cottonwood Spring, Elevation 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. April 25 (cont.) We found several couples vacationing here and the region right around the spring is rather congested. Didn't do any observing as it got too dark. Set up camp, and after dinner put up a white-crowned Sparrow Mr. Stebbins (Dr. Stebbins father) collected earlier in the day. April 26. We had rain and lightning during the early evening and night up until about 12 Midnight last night. Got up and checked the birds about the camp. Cottonwood Spring lies at the head of a small south facing canyon about three miles north of the highway from Blythe to Indio. The ground is composed largely of reddish granite boulders varying in size from six feet in diameter to pebble size. The "under strata" is solid granite. In most of the hollows on the hillsides and in the washes there is a layer of coarse sand over the granite. The vegetation is sparse and evenly spaced consisted of a Mohave Yucca, Creosote bush association with desert willow, and mesquite in the washes. Salt 1947 Journal Cottonwood Spring, Elev. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. April 26 (Cont) Cottonwood trees and a couple of Washingtonia palms. Found at least eight flowering stalks of a native orchid blooming at the foot of the rocks where the spring comes out of the ground. (Epipactus?) Went out with Dr. Stebbins looking for Xantusia. The weather was clear with only a few clouds, but not very warm. Found one Xantusia vigilis under a fallen trunk of Mohave Yucca. In the afternoon took the guns out looking in the wash south of camp for Callisaurus. We only saw one or two and didn't collect any. Saw an antelope ground squirrel on the rocks on the side of the hill and took a couple of shots at long range. Missed with both. Observed the following birds: Phainopepla, Linnet, Purple Finch (probably Calif. but not sure) Warbling Vireo, Western Flycatcher, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Orange-crowned Warbler, Paleolated Warbler, Gambel Quail, Mourning Dove, Hermit Thrush, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Costa Hummer, Arkansas Goldfinch, Hooded Oriole, Lazuli Bunting Evening went to small water tank 1/4 mi. up canyon from spring to shoot bats. Had about 4 shots at one. No luck.

Salt 1947 journal Cottonwood Springs, Elev. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. April 26 Calaveras Warbler, Long-tailed Chat, (cont.) Black-headed Grosbeak, Western Tanager, Verdin, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Turkey Vulture, Green-tailed Towhee, Audubon Warbler, Solitary Vireo. April 27. Broke camp about 8:00 AM and drove to sand dune area in Pinto Basin. Pinto Basin, 3mi S, 1½ mi W., Pinto Peak, Elev. 1200', Riverside Co., Calif April 27. Arrived about 9:30 AM, parked truck and hiked to sand dune about 1 mi. east of road from Cottonwood Spring to 29 Palms at foot of Pinto peak (west slope). Area in flat area of Pinto basin at that point uniform coarse sand and gravel generally packed firmly Creosote bushes and galeta grass alternate in evenly- evenly spaced clumps about 4 to 6 feet apart. Sky was clear with no clouds when we started walking. Temperature was fairly warm but only got hot just about mid-day at which time clouds collected and shut off sun for short periods keeping the temperature only moderate. Salt 1947 Journal Pinto Basin, 3 mi S, 1/2 mi W, Pinto Peak, Riverside co., Calif. which were frightened at approach immediately ran down rodent tunnels without stopping. Walked down east slope of dune to wash at base of foothills. Saw no lizards and only one bird, a gnatcatcher (probably Plumbeous.) Smoke trees were the principal vegetation in the wash. Walked back up to the dune. The vegetation is about the same as that of the flat basin floor except the percentage of grass is higher and crosote lush less. By this time (12 M) it had become warmer and was able to shoot an Uma scoparia while he waited at entrance to burrow after running before me. Collecting improved and Dr. Stebbins shot 3 and I shot one more Uma. Then started back to truck. Saw Ash-throated Flycatcher, and collected a Townsend Warbler for identification. Drove on to 29 Palms; bought groceries in Yucca Valley and continued to Desert Hot Springs where we inquired directions to Long Canyon. Salt 1947 Journal Pinto Basin, 3 mi. S., 1\frac{1}{2} mi W., Pinto Peak, Riverside Co., Calif. April 27 (cont.) Cottonwoods and water four miles up road in long canyon. However, we found the road goes only as far as old aqueduct construction dirt dump where the road is completely washed out and impassable, about at the point shown for the road end on topog sheet. Turned back, went through Desert Hot springs to Aqueduct road north east of- Desert Hot spring and going east on this road into little morongo canyon. Drove about 1 mi. up road in canyon from mouth and camped for night. Clear, [illegible] cool, but warmer than last night. Heard screech owls and Desert sparrows. April 28. Little Morongo Valley, Elev. 1500', Riverside Co., Calif. Got up and put up specimens before breakfast. After breakfast began looking about for specimens. Our east campsite is on the left bank of a dry wash on a little of sand about 10 feet above wash floor, between wash floor and the hillside. The floor of the canyon is spotted with Chilopsis and other plants. and is mostly hard packed coarse sand. The hills are sparsely vegetated with

Salt 1947 Journal Little Morongo Valley, Elev. 1500', Riverside Co., Calif. creosote bush and cholla. Mostly it is bare decomposing granite which breaks into large boulders. Hillsides are very steep and show no signs of change in foliage type with increase in elevation. I walked up one small tributary canyon a short way. The walls were very steep, almost bare rock, and at the bottom met to form a narrow floor about a yard wide filled with sand. The weather was clear, with a slight tight haze. Air temperature at noon was about 28° C. Walked back and forth over the sand on the table where our camp was. Collected three Callisaurus draconoides in an area of about 500 sq yds. Saw about 3 more which gives an idea of density. (Data for specimens in catalogue of R.C. Stedins) Also collected a Cnemidophorus tessellatus. (data same place as above) and saw numerous Uta & stansburiana. Saw an antelope ground squirrel. Following birds were present: Desert Sparrow, Bullock Oriole, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Costa Hummer, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Pileolates Warbler, Screech Owl, Horned Owl.

Salt 1947 Journal. Morongo Pass, just across county line, Elev. San Bernardino Co, Calif. April 28. (cont) Broke camp at Little Morongo and drove here arriving about 3 PM. Parked the car and hunted birds for about 1/2 hours. The east and north facing slopes of the hills have scattered live oaks on them. On the flat is low catclaws, cholla and mohave yucca, at the head of the draws on the south and west facing slopes are small dense stands of green willow appearing trees, and usually 2 to 5 live oaks. Found the following birds present in my exploration of the flat area and south facing slopes: Desert Sparrow, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Loggerhead Shrike, Phainopepla, Calif. Jay., Linnnet, Cactus Wren, Turkey Vulture, Cactus Woodpecker. After this exploration drove on toward Yucca Valley and looked for the road shown on the map as leading to lower Covington flat. Found a road which seemed to correspond to that shown on the map, but about 5 mi. south of highway it appeared to branch. One branch to right went up onto opposite side of wash. other branch; if it was one, went straight up the wash in the sand. Taking the road

Salt 1947 Journal Mozengo Pass, just across county line, San Bernardino Co., Calif. which went across the wash from east side over to the west side, we found it to be a dead end. Going back to the "fork" the sand looked too soft for the truck to we abandoned the attempt to drive to Coverington flat and drove on to 29 Palms where we spent the night. April 28 (cont.) Cottonwood Spring, Elw. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. Skinned specimens in the morning at 29 Palms, then bid Mr. Slebbin's goodbye as he was going with his father, C.A. Stedman to the Dollar Lake regions my wife, Mr. Vincent yoder and I drove to Cottonwood Springs arriving here about 4:30 PM. Found the oasis deserted of people (ut well populated with animals. Mary discovered a Coluber flagellum in the moist ground at base of Palms almost as soon as we arrived. Collected it alive. He proved to be shedding, or moultin' but was in good condition. Weather has been about 30° C at noon but had cooled considerably by 4:30. We ate dinner. Shot a bat after dinner. Am not sure of the identification but I April 29.

Salt 1947 Journal Cottonwood Spring, Elev. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif. April 29 (cont.) think it is a species of Pipistrellus. Also caught a specimen of the omnipresent Uta stansburiana but let it go again. Caught two live specimens of Bufo (probably punctatus) in the moist ground at the base of the palms. Many more present. Their call is a high pitched trill. It started about 7:15 PM, when complete darkness had just begun. It is now 9:45 and they are silent although that may be due to the fact that we have been hunting them. April 30 got up and looked for birds in the immediate vicinity of the spring. The bushes and palms are alive with small birds, warblers, finches, and sparrows. Collected a Lincoln Sparrow there. Saw a Spinus p. psaltria but didn't succeed in collecting it. Spent the rest of the morning putting up the bat I shot last night. Mary and Vincent came back from a walk with two live chuckawallas they had noosed about 1/4 mi east of the spring. Spent the first part of the afternoon observing female costa hummers. and the latter half, putting up the SKIN of the Lincoln Sparrow. In the evening checked on the

Salt 1947 Journal April 30 (cont.) Cottonwood Spring, Elev. 3600', Riverside Co., Calif. Buteo punctatus about the spring. Also saw several bats but couldn't hit any this time. Have seen the following species about the spring so far: Uta stansburiana, Cnemidophorus tesselatus, Phainopepla, Hooded Oriole, Audubon Warbler, finnet, Calif(?) Purple Finch (5 individuals at least), Green-backed Goldfinch, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Long-tailed Chat, Western Tanager, Pileated Warbler, Black-headed Grosbeak, Desert Sparrow, Townsend Warbler, White-crowned Sparrows, Costa Hummer, Warbling Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Chipping Sparrows, Lazuli Bunting, Lincoln Sparrow, Cactus Wren, Oregon Junco, Wood Pewee, Sharp-shinned Hawk. Night Hawk (sp?), Scott Oriole May 1 Got up and searched the area for birds and reptiles in and around the spring park area. Talked to two men from the forestry service. They are constructing a trail from Cottonwood Spring to Lost Palms. The Hermit Warblers have arrived there in numbers today. Also saw a ♂ Costa Hummer in courtship flight. Several Red-tailed Hawks flew over. They seemed very light in color. Finally collected the Arkansas Goldfinch. Saw a Shrike take a young.

Salt 1947 Journal May 1 Cottonwood Spring, Elev. 3000', Riverside Co., Calif.- goldfinch. About 5 Pm. captured a Scelopous magester. Drove to the highway to Indio. Saw Verdin and Road runner on the way out. Also saw an Ash-throated Flycatcher and Olive-sided Flycatcher in the trees at Cottonwood spring during day. Went right driving on the Indio-Indian Wells. road. Saw only one gekko, but didn't capture it. Must add the following species to the Cottonwood Spring list: Black-throated Gray Warbler, MacGillivray Warbler, and yellow-throat May. 2 Indio-Palm Springs- Palm Canyon- Andreas Canyon- Riverside Co., Calif. Drove over to Palm Canyon. The second fire reported to have burned through has taken out much of the underbrush and water flow through there has piled up a lot of debris around the bases of the palms. Thought I saw a second Spinus psaltria psaltria or but didn't get a good enough look to make sure. Drove over to Andreas Canyon about 2 mi east of Palm Canyon, 2 mi west of Palm Springs on the south facing

Salt 1947 Journal May 2. Indio - Palm Canyon - Andreas Canyon, - Riverside Co., Cely slope of Mt. San. Jacinto. I estimate the elevation at 1000'. Found the canyon well filed with trees. mostly alders, catclaw, mesquite, and cottonwoods. There is a stream about 4' wide and average 1' deep flowing down the canyon. The banks and beds of the stream are well shaded and considerably cooler than the rocky hillides on each side. Walked up the stream about 1/2 mi from the parking place. Found quantities of at least 7 adult Rana boylii on the rocks in the stream. They were clinging to the rocks just above the water line or sitting up on the tops. Time of day, 1:00 PM. Air temp in shade about 104° F. Also caught a single Hyla arenicolor in same situation. Also saw one Brown Towhee by (Abert?) parking lot at base of canyon. Drove to Palm Springs. 1 Bufo punctatus captured at Cottonwood Springs died and spoiled and was thrown away. Sceloporus magister also died but I kept it hoping to save it. Drove home to R.T.

Salt 1947 Journal 5 mi E, 4 mi S, Shandon, 1175 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. 19 Aug Met Dr. Alden Miller, Paul Dehnel, & Bob Storer at Paso Robles at 2:30 PM. 18 Aug. Drove from Paso Robles to Shandon to ranch of Dan McMillan about 5 miles S.E. of Shandon where we spent the night. Got up in the morning (19 Aug) and walked about the hills around the ranch house a little. Those portions of the land not cultivated are covered with Haplopappus and Encelia on the hillsides and grasses and low shrubs (of unknown species) in the flat portions. Saw Horned Larks, Mourning Dove, Valley Quail, House Finch, After breakfast drove to this location and set up camp. We are located in the San Juan Valley along a dry wash I presume to be the bed of the San Juan river or a tributary of it. The valley floor is about 2 miles wide. Hills rise on each side to about 1300 ft on west and about 1700 on the east. Most of the flat portions of the hilltops and portions of the valley floor are planted in wheat and are now stubble. The uncultivated portions of the valley floor are covered with wire-grass and clumps of Atriplex. The hillsides are covered by sparse cover of Haplopappus, Encelia, and some Artemisia.

Salt 1947 Journal. 5 mi E, 4 mi S, Shandon, 1175 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. 19 Aug (cont) Where we are groves of fairly large cottonwood trees are growing in patches along the banks of the wash. A few Quercus douglasii are growing along the base of the north facing slope to our west. Walked about in the cottonwoods after lunch. Collected a & Western Tanager, Say, Pthocbe, & Pileolated Warbler. Mounted them and later Paul Deknel and I walked up a canyon on the hills to the west to the top & back. Saw gnatcatcher (sp?), Rock Wren, Calif Jay, Calif Quail, At the {probably many Mourning Dove Blue gray At the tops of the draws near the ridge of the hills the walls of the draws are almost cliffs and are spotted with Junipers, some of good size up to 20 ft high. Animal life seems good on the hillsides. Saw several groups of gopher burrows, small rodent burrows and one large burrow, possibly tadger. After dinner ran 50 traps in a line from middle of sandy wash across bank to or west and up the hillside through the Paplopapus, past two Juniper Trees to a point about halfway up hillside.

Salt 1947 Journal 5mi E, 4mi S, Shandon, 1175 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. 20 Aug. Wind blew and it was cold and damp. last night, Didn't sleep well. Checked traps in morning - Caught a Dipodomys agilis, 2 Peromyscus maniculatus and a Reithrodontomy's ludovicianus which spoiled during the day and was not put up. Put up skins in morning including a Lanius ludovicianus which I shot yesterday and failed to mention. Saw Mex. Bluebirds, Brewer Blackbird, heard white-breasted nuthatch, West. Meadowlark, saw a Sparrow Hawk, Downey Woodpecker, Marsh Hawk. This morning a Coyote appeared at the "fan" at mouth of a large draw 300 yds from our camp, sat down and barked at us for about 15 minutes. He finally disappeared. Last night Storer and I shined a young (large) Horned Owl. Also heard a Barn Owl. Drove to Paso Robles to buy another blanket. so After dinner set traps in a "fan" at mouth of canyon in a grassy Artemesia growth. Will get names of other plants there tomorrow,

Salt 1947 Journal 5mi E, 4mi S, Shandon, 1175 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. 21 Aug. Another cold night last night. Woke up to find ground mist in the valley there. Ran trap line after breakfast. Caught a ♂ & ♀ Dipodomys & 2 adult and on imm. Peromyscus maniculatus. Those portions of trap line in bare ground covered only with dried stubble of annuals yielded nothing although there were holes there too. The other plant growth with the Artemisia is a long stemmed Encelia. Skinned for a while then took a run with Mr. McMillan to a canyon on east side of San Juan Valley. Flushed 2 Sage Sparrows but got neither. Collected a Bewick Wren and a Rock Wren in that Canyon. Both species were fairly abundant. Saw about 6 Bewick Wren in one pair of side draws and about 4 Canyon Rock Wrens at the upper end of the side draw where the erosion had made a bank. Skinned some more after lunch; then went out again with McMillan to look for Sage Sparrows. Searched 4 canyons on the east side of valley but again no success. Saw 2 Brown Towhees in one canyon.

Salt 1947 Journal 5 mi E., 4 mi S. Shandon, 1175 ft. San Luis Obispo Co., Cal. 21 Aug. Saw a Shrike as well. Saw Prairie Falcon over the pasture land in the valley floor south of camp. Set out trap line of 75 traps on west side hillside at mouth of large wash north of campsite. Ran traps from middle way up hillside down onto "fan" at mouth of canyon. Aug 22. Checked trap lines first thing. Didn't catch much but got some variety. Perognathus californicus, ins. Dipodomys, ins Reithrodontomys, and an Onychomys torridus. After running trap lines walked up through the cottonwoods along the stream side south of camp. Collected Pileolated Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Hutton Vireo. Saw a Red-tailed Hawk during our walk. Also many Yellow & Pileolated Warblers in the trees. Dehnol took a shot at a male Western Tanager but he got away. Came back to camp. Put up an Epsteinus I shot last night. Put up skins till 3:00 PM. Then drove to Shandon for water. Saw plenty of Sunsets along the road there. Also several Western Kingbirds, Dark Sparrows, and a dead Beechy (?) Ground Squirrel on the road.

5alt 1947 Journal 5 mi. E., 4mi. S. Shandon, San Luis Obispo Co., Caly. Aug.22. Put out traps before dinner... Ran a rectangular checkerboard of traps over relatively heavy growth of Haplopappus in alluvial fan at mouth of canyon where I trapped last night. Aug.23. Checked traps first thing. Caught nothing but an immature Dipos and 2 Peromyscus maniculatus, one ♂, one ♀. Walked north along cottonwoods along stream bed with Dekuel. We covered the area about 3/4 mile north of camp for about two hours. Saw West. Bluebirds in abundance. Collected a Calaveras Warbler, White-breasted Nuthatch, and a Coy. Jay. Heard Jinnets again. Saw Pileolated Warblers again. Several Yellow- billed Magpies were feeding on a dead cow, tried to collect some but didn't get one till later at camp. After lunch put up skins until supper. Drove to a portion of the river bottom 1 1/2 miles upstream from camp & set 70 traps in an almost pure stand of Distichus grass. After supper drove into Shandon. Saw a Kit Fox crossing the road on the way in.

Salt 1947 Journal 5 mi E., 4 mi S. Shandon, 1175 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug. 24. Checked traps. Apparently this Distichelus grass when green is almost barren of animals (vertebrate life). for I got only one Peromyscus and one Dipus in the traps and they were near the edge of the green portion. I have never seen birds feeding in it either. When dry it may have some things but green it apparently forms such a dense mat over the ground nothing will do well there. Perhaps this is jumping to conclusions from only one nights trapping. Drove with Dohne & Storey up Gillis canyon to a side canyon with a seep of fresh water where Sage Sparrows and Brown Towhees come into the water. Sage Sparrows come in good concentrations considering how scattered they are in the dry washes and brush. Collected 4 sparrows, a towhee, (and a Horned Lark along the road on the way up). Saw Blue-gray Gnatcatchers & Green-backed Goldfinches at the seep. Thought I saw a Spotted Towhee but couldn't be sure. Put up skins all afternoon. Didn't put out any traps

Salt 1947 Journal Camanati Creek, 1650 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug. 25 Broke camp this morning. Drove to steel trap location at the mouth of Jellis Canyon. Met Mr. McMillan there. He had a young kit fox caught in one of the traps. Went further up wash and found a mephitis in another set. Both sets were in a wash and baited with dead Dipos with rocks placed on them. Drove out to Chalone Valley with McMillan to Hancock Ranch to look for Condors. Saw none crossed out McMillan caught a young Coluber. Drove from there to Shandon, then to this location on the Cammata ranch. Country here is mainly low hills covered with Adenostoma, Eriogonum, Arctostaphylus, Quercus Douglasi, i., Pinus Sabiniana. There is a small stream right here where we are camped. Camanati Creek. Sage Sparrows are coming in here to water. Collected one. Set out 70 traps. Line runs up hill along crest and down side again through these plant associates in this order: Eriogonum f, Arctostaphylus, Eriogonum-Adenostoma, Arctostaphylus and back to Eriogonum. Heard Poor will & young Horned Owl. Dr. Miller got a Screech Owl.

Salt 1947 Journal Cammatti Creek, 1450', San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug. 26. Ran trap lines after breakfast. Caught 2 ♂ & 1 ♀ Dipodomys & 2 Perognathus.. All five were caught along the ridge of the hill in manzanita growth. Walked along Cammati creek east of camp about 1/2 mile through cottonwoods and oaks. Then took off at right angle to creek up side draws in Jigger Pine forest. Collected a Calif Thrasher and a Calif Jay, in this association. Camp back to camp. Saw four birds possibly Phainopepla on the way in. Skinned all the rest of the day. Set out traps before dinner in same locality except avoided Eriogonum and concentrated on manzanita. Went out with Dr. Miller to watch him set his traps. Saw a Badger as I was out setting my own trap line. Birds W. Salt 1947 Journal Cammati Creek, 1450 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug. 27. Ran trap lines. Poor results. 2 8" Dipo's., 1 Peromyscus truei, and one Perognathus. All were caught in manzanita. Took a long walk north of camp up Cammati creek bed. mostly through cottonwoods, then fanned out to right and left into the Digger Pine and Juniper in the washes entering main creek bed. Flushed a large owl which I guessed to be one of the young Horned Owls. we hear calling each night. Took some shots at Brown Towhees but missed nearly all. Was shooting 38's. Got one with a half load. He later proved to be so damaged could not be put up. Beechy Ground Squirrels are thick in the flat regions, especially in the over grazed grassland by the water tank 1.6 miles north of camp. Dr. Miller says they are all young ones. Came back to camp and skinned. Set traps west of camp in Juniper, Manzanita, Scrub Oak. After supper went out with Dehnal & Store looking for Poorwills shot one. It was on the ground under a large Valley Oak.

Salt 1947 Journal Cammatti Creek, 1450 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug.28. Ran trap lines. Surprisingly poor catch. One Peregnathus. and three Dipots. (all 3 with broken skulls. Demeel who also trapped there had similarly poor luck. Went out hunting over hills to north-east of camp. Went through Jigger Pine in rather thick growth at bottom of narrow valley. Saw Gray Squirrel which Demeel. shot, two immature Red-tail Hawks, heard Brown Towhees, Hairy Woodpecker, & Thrashers. Walked up to head of valley. Pines gave way to Oaks and grass. One region proved to be heavily grazed. Could see Red Mountain which was just north of our first came to North-west of hill-top. Saw only Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and a few Bewick Wrens on hillsides. A few Bluebirds were around the oaks. Crossed ridge and walked down canyon parallel to first one which I came up. It had scattered stand of Blue Oak at upper end which gave way into Junipers in sandy canyon floor nearer mouth. Shot a Calif Thrasher in junipers in canyon mouth. They seem to feed in shadow of junipers. Could not confirm this theory with observation on only one

Salt 1947 Cammati Creek, 1450 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug. 28 (cont.) showed Dunnets, Dark Sparrows, and Sage Sparrows. all coming in by flocks to the water. The Dunnets seem to be pretty well restricted, at least in large numbers, to the region immediately about the water. Collected a ♂ Dunnet which proved to be about 1/2 through the molt. The head especially forehead was covered with half growt grown feathers in sheaths. Saw a Lewis Woodpecker in the oaks by the tank. Also many Mourning Doves, and a large couvy of Valley Guail. Shot a Calif Jay in the oaks. Also shot a Pileolated Warbler in the cottonwoods along the stream bed. It later proved to be very fat when skinned. Came back and skinned the rest of the day. Caught a small Sceloporus on a tree trunk in camp. Went out after supper with Dehnel & Storer for bats using towels to "snap" at them. Got no bats. Later Storer and I went out with Dr. Miller for Screech Owls in Oaks in draws east of camp. No owls. Set traps in Euogonum- hillside by water tank.

Salt 1947 Journal Cammati Creek, 1450 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Cal.f. Aug 30. One ♀, one ♂ Dipo, and a Peromyscus truei in traps. Stayed in flat by water tank for about an hour. Shot a Brown Towhee in good new plumage. Very few pin feathers or feathers with sheathed bases. Came back to camp. Shot a Sage Sparrow. Skurined until 2:00 P.M. Then I walked up through hills north-west of campsite searching for Spotted Towhees. I covered "Digger Pine valley floors" where saw Rank Sparrow flocks and a Prairie Falcon; up to Adenostoma in pure stands, then onto north facing manzanita-scrub oak covered hillsides; down into stream beds with sandy floors 2 feet wide; back through mixed manzanita, Adenostoma-Eriogorum on south facing slopes. Saw one Thrasher and neither heard nor saw Spotted Towhees. Went with Dehnal to water tank for swim. He Shot 2 ♂ Linnets, an immature linnet, and I shot a Nuthatch. Set traps in almost pure manzanita stand across road from camp.

Journal Salt 1947 Camnath Creek, 1450 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Aug 31. There were no mammals in those traps I set in the manzanita grove. Apparently, although the Perognathus have had manzanita berries in their pouches, it takes more than just the bushes to pull them into an area. Skinsed [illegible] birds until 2:00 PM. The temperature I would estimate was about 85°F or 90° so Dehnel and I went to a Digger Pine grove north of camp to look for Xantusia. We looked in several situations under the fallen pine logs; in the flat regions at the mouth of canyon where the stands of pine were thickest and mixed with Blue Oak, on sandy hillsides where the logs were mixed with manzanita, and in pure stands of Digger Pine. No Xantusia. No herbs of any kind. Then drove to water tank and collected 5 Linnets. Took a swim with the whole gang later. Rebaited the trap for the Badger. Something at a hole in the squirrel carcass hand hanging over the traps. Wired a squirrel carcass to bushes for bait. Heard a poorwill singing after dinner. We went out to look, but couldn't find him.

Salt 1947 Journal Cammati Creek, 1450 st., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif Sept. 1. Checked Badger trap. Some sort of thing ate most of the meat off. The carcass I put there yesterday without disturbing either traps or carcass. There were no tracks about that I could see to give a clue as to the animal or bird responsible. Skinned the linnets I shot yesterday. Then drove down to water tank for a shot at the doves. Today is the first day of dove season and many friends of the rancher here are in here for dove hunting. Drove past the water tank and collected Horned Larks. About dusk, the doves began to come in to water. Went out by camp and all four of us took a crack at them all in addition to the regular hunters. Dr. Miller got 4 and I got 1. Sept. 2. Broke camp and drove to Pozo to Ranger guard station to get permission to enter the closed section of national forest. Then drove to La Panza Ranch, met Eben McMillan and drove to cabin in Martinez Canyon. Set out steel trap before dinner. Heard Poor-willers and Canyon's Wrens.

Salt 1947 Journal 3 1/2 mi E., 1/2 mi N., McChesney Mtn., 1900 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Sept. 3. We are camped at the Dario Martinez cabin in just off Martinez Canyon on the La Panza ranch. Most of the road in traverses this ranch. The road is little more than a pair of ruts and required compound tow in the old truck at several spots. I should judge it would be almost unusable during wet weather both because of mud and because the washes through which we passed would be filled with water. The countryside is steep hillsides composed of basal conglomerate which is sharply cut into vertical cliffs and steep canyon sides along the larger water courses. On the more gradual slopes and hilltops there is a surface layer of fine hard packed dirt. Most of the gradual slopes are open grasslands, now brown and heavily grazed by cattle, with Blue Oak scattered about especially on the hillsides. The steeper hillsides are heavily clothed in a dense chaparral of 4 to 6 foot high manganita, scrub oak, Adenostoma, and Eriodictyon. A fairly large area has burned over the recent years and is now dominantly Eriodictyon.

Salt 1947 Journal 3 1/2 mi E, 1/2 mi N, McChesney Mtn, 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co, Calif Sept. 3. (cont.) In the stream bottom there is great boulder accumulation with very little vegetation on the stream bed. Sycamore trees line the stream banks and in some spots are cottonwoods. In morning walked south from camp. up shallow canyon for about a mile. Vegetation is mostly oak and poison oak. with grass and scrub oak also in understory. Saw Mex. Bluebirds, Dark Sparrows, Juninets, Bewick Wren, Plain Titmouse, Mourning Dove, Brown Towhee, Red-breasted & White-breasted Nut-hatches, Chipping Sparrow, Nuttall Woodpecker, Flicker, Calif. Woodpecker. Heard a Raven. Then turned west and walked through notch by cabin to main canyon. West facing slope is heavily covered with manzanita, ceonothus, Adenostoma, and Quercus dumosa. Found a very nice rocky cliff face with brush interspersed which looked like a good spot to set traps for Bassarisus. Saw deer, probably racoon, and probably skunk tracks, as well as large print I judged to be coyote tracks. Saw some woodrat nest in by the rock face, saw some chipmunks

Journal Salt 1947 3 1/2 mi E., 1/2 mi N, Mcchesney Mtn., 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co, Calif. Sept. 3 (cont.) near the rock face. Also Calif. Jay and Spotted Towhee. Down in the stream bed found little stagnant pools of water 2 to 4 feet long and 6 to 12 inches deep about every 100 yards along stream bed. Found Junipers interspersed with Sycamores. Saw- Canyon Wren, large Sceloporus, Lawrence Goldfinch. Collected a Butarnias. Came back to camp and skinned until four o'clock. Set two #2 steel traps (single) on rock face baited with Quail and scent for bassariscus. Also set a #3 double steel trap in the path like this bank. Idea being animal steps tap buried. onto around rock drop off rock trap. Dr. Miller brought an immature purple finch down from Mcchesney mtn which I skinned. Shot at bats in evening. No bats hit. Eben McMillan shot a buck. He says there are surely Mountain Lions in these hills and that their tracks are seen often. He says he has never seen one though.

Salt 1947 Journal 3\frac{1}{2} mi E, \frac{1}{2} mi N, McChesney Mtn, 1900 ft., San Luis Obispo co., Calif. Sept. 4. Nothing caught in steel traps. Dehnel & I walked east from camp along road by which we came in. Saw Lewis Woodpeckers. Dehnel collected one. Mourning Doves were feeding in large numbers in the open fields. So also were Dark Sparrows and Linnets. Saw a chipmunk under a Blue Oak in an otherwise open field. He escaped into some rocks at the base of the oak. Started north through a draw between hillsides covered with Adenostoma & Eriodictyon. Saw several Spotted Towhees flying back to side canyons from single point down "stream". Walked down there and found that there was a good pool with an oak overhanging it and grass along a portion of the edge. Birds came in to water. Dehnel collected a Bell Sparrow and I a Brown Towhee. Also Valley Quail & Doves were coming in. Seven Calif Jays flew from a dead tree up the side of the hill as we came up. Continued down canyon to main channel of Martinez Creek. Collected a Rana aurora in a deep, shaded pool in a very narrow portion of stream bed.

Salt 1947 Journal 3/2 mi E., 1/2 mi N, McChesney mtn, 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co, Calif. Sept.4 (cont.) The walls were so close together we had to straddle the pool to get over it. Walked up main stream bed till we came to very high walled portion, the site of a waterfall during wet times of year. There was a long pool 30 feet long, 8 feet wide, and about 4 feet deep at base of "waterfall". Walls of canyon were almost sheer so we back tracked and started up side. Heard Canyon Wrens, saw Black Phoebe, and Arkansas Goldfinch. Reached top of hill by going through manzanita & scrub oak. On top found low Adenostoma and Erodium where fire had been. Saw rodent holes and apparent dust bath sites in this low chaparral. Saw Sceloporus on rocks on all of trip. Not only small ones but large (up to 5") as well. Temperature was about 90° F. at 10 A.M. Skinned the rest of the day. Forgot to mention Western Tanager which I shot in oaks west of camp while checking traps in morning. Shot a Pipistrellus in the evening. Storer and Dr. Miller collected a Screech Owl by camp.

Continued through the notch to main canyon of Martinez Canyon and started north south.. It was about 6:45 when I reached the canyon bottom. Sun was up and shining on east facing wall of canyon but not into bottom. Saw Bell Sparrows., Goldfinches, and Titmice at pool. Heard Heard Mountain Quail calling from dense covered west facing slope of canyon. Continued north along canyon bottom. Black Phoebes, Towhees of both kinds, Jays and chipmunks were active. After passing several other pools, reached the pool above the waterfall-site where Dehnel and I had to leave the canyon bottom on our hike north south yesterday. Found it to be about 25' long, 12' wide at widest place, and about 3' deep at one spot. There were a few spots of grass, a large clump of Canex, and a few Sycamore saplings.. Otherwise it was just a depression in the conglomerate rock. Found two small gray Hyla in the water there. They look like Hyla arenicolor to me but I may be over hoping. Started back to camp. Shot a Canyon Wren and near camp, a Rufous-crowned Sparrow in the juniper adenostoma on the burned over section near camp.

Salt 1947 Journal 3 1/2 mi E., 1/2 mi N., McClesney mtn., 1900 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Caly. Sept. 5 (cont.). Skinned the rest of the day. Shot at bats in evening with no success. Put out 50 museum Special Traps in the Eriodiction-Adenostoma growth on the rocky hillside just north of camp. Baited with walnuts. Store ran a parallel line baited with oatmeal. Dr. Miller shot an owl. There were several Screech Owls calling in the oaks about camp. Sept. 6 Ran trap line. Got one Dipos & two Peromyscus. Went down to water very early (5:30) to wait for mountain quail to come in. Heard one at 7:20 AM? call from the heavy manzanita-scrub oak on west facing hillside. A few minutes later heard the alarm call given several times. No further contact. Saw Black Phoebe, Goldfinches (mostly Arkansas, a few Lawrence) come to water. Nothing new appeared. Abandoned wait at 8:00 AM. Shot a spotted towhee on the way back from trap line in scrub oak. Put up skins till afternoon. Set two Schyler traps in attic of cabin and 3 #3 steels in canyon south of us using woodrat hung from tree for bait.

Salt 1947 Journal 3/2 mi E, 1/2 mi N, McChesney mtn., 1900 ft., San Luis Obispo Co., Caly. Sept. 7. Dohnel & went to spring west of camp again to try for the mountain quail. Waited at the spring from 6:30 till 8:00 AM. Again saw no quail. Hutton Vireo hopped around while we were sitting there. After 8 shot a Rock Wren and an Arkansas goldfinch which appeared darker than ordinary though not so black on back as the one from Cottonwood spring. Ran Dohnels trap line with him. Heard Mountain Quail call from brush 50 yards up hill from us in thick manzanita tangle but couldn't get a location & didn't see any. Went back to camp and then walked down small canyon north of cabin. Saw six fiddance watering at same time at pool of water there. Continued alone to junction of main catin and & canyon I was in. Went up on hill east of junction in Eriodictson and juniper brush. Collected a Rufous-crowned sparrow. Two Ravens flew over but didn't get a shot at them. Two hunters up here today shot at a bobcat in this area this morning. Skinned the rest of the day. McMillans both arrived. Dr. Miller shot Soreech Owl.

Salt 1947 Journal 3/4 mi E, 1/2 mi N., McChesney mtn, 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Califf. Sept. 8. Dr. Miller, Dehnel, the two McMullans & I started up early to top McChesney mtn. Went through open grassy fields with oaks. Dr. Miller shot a juncce. Saw Bell Sparrows in Adenostoma on hillriders. At 8 AM. spotted 14 Calif Condors roosted on burned coulter pine snags in Adenostoma brush on canyon side 1/2 mile away across canyon from us. They were dispersed over an area 1/2 mile long along canyon side, a mixture of mature and immature birds. As they were perched we could see only about 4 birds with the bright orange head of the adult. After about 45 min. a good breeze began to blow up the canyon. the condors began to stir and stretch. A few took off, one adult appearing to sail over to another snag to scare some of the immatures into taking flight. 12 birds took off, gained almost 1000 ft in altitude in less than 5 minutes, and sailed off in a direct line foo toward the canizo plain. One bird went off by himself in a direct line east instead of north, and one went slowly at low elevation down Martinez canyon. As the 12 birds flew over our heads only 2 had the brown struck wing patch of the immature. Several others had patches smaller

Salt 1941 Journal 3 1/2 mi E, 1/2 mi N, McCheaney Mtn, 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Sept. 8 (cont.) and not quite so white as some of those positively adults. Continued up side of mountain. Saw immature Golden Eagle. At saddle near peak of mountain there is a small spring on a burned over hillside covered with Adenostoma and Erodiction Coulter pine snags are around the spring, and there is a dense growth of Ceanothus and Rhus immediately about the spring. Also some Salix. Sat at the spring for a while. mex Bluebirds, Fox Sparrows, Arkansas Goldfinches, Calif Thrashers, Spotted Towhees, Turdaria merriami, Yellow warblers came in to drink. Heard Calif Valley Quail, Red-breasted Nutthatch, and, later, Mountain Quail. I ~~waited~~ waited at the spring another hour hoping for Purple Finches after the others left. Nothing new came to the spring so I started down. Got a shot at two Ravens near peak but missed. Got back to camp with no further incident. Skinned birds for rest of day. Sept 9. Picked up steel traps in preparation for move. One by rock face was sprung with rock between jaws holding them open. The bait was gone.

Salt 1947 Journal 3 1/2 mi E, 1/2 mi N, McChesney Mtn., 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. Sept. 9. At the three steel traps south of camp the bait was gone, and there were fresh coyote tracks about, but none of the traps were sprung. Broke camp and drove to Willow canyon west of Martiney canyon to reconnoiter for another locality to hunt mountain quail. The brush is more open and there is only one watering spot so it looks better from a tactical point of view. Drove out of La Panza ranch and started over toward Carrizo Plain. The Dodge truck broke a front axle right in the middle of a plowed field in the plain near Simmler. Drove with Dr. Miller to McKittrick for mechanic. Went to Taft for parts, then back to truck. Parts wrong size. Dehner & I drove to Taft. Stayed in field near there all night. Sept. 10. Drove to Bakers Field for parts; got truck fixed and camped near McKittrick for night. Set out traps in Abruplex flat. Saw Cotton tail and Amospermophilus on way out.

Salt 1947 Journal 2 mi N. McKittrick, 700 ft., Kern Co, Calif. Sept. 11 This region is an open tuleen plain covered with low Atriplex bushes and low grasses. Near the washes the brushes are higher, denser, and closely packed. Near the washes the soil is fairly loose, but 50 yards from the wash the soil is hard packed. The traps I set were over this dense hard packed material and netted one mature and one immature Dipodomys nitrotoides. Hunted along the wash, collected De Conde Thrashers, Bell Sparrows, and Trail Flycatchers. Saw also Rock Wrens and Black-tailed Jackrabbit. Collected a Crotalus viridis at base of Atriplex by wash. Saw many Uta stansburiana, and one other probably Crepidophorus. Put up skins the rest of day. Set out traps along wash. Delhue got a Pituophis. Sept. 12. Caught only one Dipo in traps. Dr. Miller pointed out that the soil was quite hard even though there was good atriplex growth as a possible explanation. Walked down the wash to north of camp. Did poor shooting and got only one Bell Sparrow. A bad day. Put up skins for the rest of day.

Used walnuts for bait. Ran highway after dark for snakes from McKittrick to Button Willow. Air temp. when we started was in high sixties or seventies F° at least. Turned up no snakes. Sept. 13. Caught 4 Onychomys, 3♂ & 1♀ Dipodomys nitrotoides, and 1 Peromyscus maniculatus in traps. Put up skins before breaking camp. Drove to McKittrick then to Tember Ranch, owned by a Mr. Twisselman N.W. of McKittrick on road to Simmer & Carizo Plain. Set out 25 traps in Prunus grove and 60 in Haplopappus on hillside with north west facing slope. 8mi W, 3mi N McKittrick, 2100 ft., Kern Co., Calif. Sept. 14 Caught 2♂, 4♀ Perognathus californicus, 1♂ Reithrodonomys megalotis, 1♂ & 1im ♀, 2♀ Peromyscus truei, 4♂ & 6♀ Peromyscus maniculatus. Skinned the rest of the day. Dr. Miller shot a ♂ 1st year Canpodacus mexicanus which I skinned. This territory looks something like this. There is a stream course with tributaries which is now dry and has formed a steep banked gully 6 to 8 feet deep. Salt 1947 Journal 8 mi W, 3 mi N McKittrick, 2100 ft., Kern Co., Calif. Sept. 14 to heights of 20 & 8 feet respectively and form dense tangles with little understory. Peromyscus were caught in here, and mex. Blue birds, Carpodacus mexicanus, Phainopeplas, Bewick Wrens, Brown & Spotted Towhees, Valley Quail, Thrashers (Calif.), Arkansas Goldfinches, Calif. Jays feed on the berries of the Prunus. Screech Owls are common in this habitat. The hillsides on either side of the stream bed are bare, lightly covered with a low dry grass and an even cover of Haplopapus. Those hillsides facing generally north are more densely covered but not much. Dotted in the Haplopapus on the hillsides and in the draws are Blue Oaks and junipers. The ground is soft sandy soil with pieces of shale broken up in it, in the Haplopapus were caught both species of Peromyscus and Parognathus californicus. Horned Owls, Barn Owls, and Sparrow Hawks are found on the hillsides. Set out six Schuyler traps in the tangle along stream course south of camp baited with pieces of mouse.

Salt 1947 Journal 8mi W, 3 mi N Mckittrick, 2100 ft., Kern Co., Calif. Sept. 15 Caught 4 Spilogale gracilis in the traps last night. 3 were alive and one dead. We killed those alive by pushing a wad of cotton soaked in chloroform on the end of a long stick into their nose. Then gave the coup de grace with a club. Skinned one skunk before lunch. Then went into Mckittrick for supplies. Did the other after I got back. Heard Brush-fits, saw Yellow Warbler, Fox Sparrow, Thrasher, and Mourning Dove in the Prunus tangle. Heard both immature and adult Bubo virginianus as well as many Screech Owls last night. Have seen only a few lizards here and not identified them. Saw the posterior half of what I think was either a Garter snake or striped racer going into the brush. It had red stripes on it as well as yellow & black. Sept. 16 Hunted down stream from camp after breakfast. Collected a Brown Towhee in Prunus. Then drove with Dr. Miller, Storer & Dehnel to top of range on dirt road leading generally north from Twisselman's house.

Salt 1947 Journal 8mi W, 3mi N McKiltrick, 2100 ft, Kern Co., Calif. Sept. 16 (cont.) Road is fairly good and goes through some heavily grazed pasture land with little vegetation. There are two large "granitic" rock "massifs" along the crest of the ridge to the east of the road. Mr. Twisselman reports Bobcats & Coyotes in these hills in large enough numbers to warrant a poisoning campaign which was due to start today. Vegetation on top of ridge where we stopped at 3500 ft elev. consisted of open parks of Junipers and Blue Oaks, and dense chaparral mostly Scrub Oak. More rock outcroppings here also. Dehnel & I investigated a pure stand of 6 foot high Arctostaphylus growing on a SW facing slope. It proved to be barren of both birds & chipmunks. Saw one Nuttall Woodpecker there. Saw Calif Jays, Thrashers, Titmice, Brown Toucans and heard White-beasted Nuthatches up there. Dr. Miller and Stores found many birds at the spring they visited. Put up skins the rest of the day. Did not put out traps.

Salt 1950 Journal. May, 26 Boca Spring, 6000 ft., Nevada Co., Caly. Arrived at flat area by Boca reservoir about 1 PM. Road is much drier than a month ago and we (Keith Dixon, Robert Bailey + S) had no trouble getting in until we got to final portion of road leading from reservoir area to spring -- . There water was draining from the stream alongside the road down the roadbed making it very slick - . We were delayed about two hours putting on chains and getting the Chee. truck through -- . We reached the spring about 3 P.M. ( All times given in Pacific Daylight Saving Time = 1 hr. later than standard ) Dixon + Bailey took exploratory walks around the area while I set up bird traps by the spring (See diagram at end of this trip journal) Watched the traps for the rest of the afternoon but drew a complete blank on Cassin finches. They are in the area, a few singing there and there but do not seem as concentrated in this area as they were a month ago -- . Robins very active especially at dusk -- . Audubon warblers singing -- . A male has established a territory in the willow by the spring from which I shot a pair a month ago -- . A green-tailed towhee also seems to have his center of activity in the willows about the

Salt 1950 Journal Boca Spring, 6000 ft., Nevada Co., Calif May 27 stricken from the list of approved cassin quick watering places. One pair came in about 6 p.m. but I missed both. The ♂ never got near the traps and the ♀ got in the trap locus + I sprung it on her but missed. During the walk went down the road to the place where we got stuck coming in. It is a grassy meadow with willows dotted through it. Belding ground squirrels were very common. Saw six or eight although could have been seeing same squirrels over after they came out of different holes. Heard a few cassin's but got no shots at them. Bailey + Dixon got some Peromyscus maniculatus and one very small light grey shrew in their traps. Sparrow hawk has been hovering over meadow. Bailey finally shot him. Heard poor-wills again after supper. Shot at bats. (few - none last night) but they didn't appear 'til dark + shooting was poor. Missed the little bats one and all. May 28. Up at 5:00. Very nice dawn chorus of rolins, green-tailed towhees, + junicos. ♂ cassin came in + sang from tree near spring. Came down to drink.

Most of the activity about the spring petered out about 11:00 AM with a slight rise again about 4 P.M. Sceloporus graciosa in rocks about spring--. Saw first Sciurus douglasii today + heard a few calls from others--. Very reduced from numbers here last fall. Eutamias all over the place--. One lives in the willows about spring--. Also a golden-mantled ground squirrel come in to the spring to drink--. There is a toad, (Bufo boreas ?) which I have neither caught nor identified living in the pool--. Noticed that when Dixon hit the first bird and it fell into the water the rest of the flock circled over it calling rather than flying away--. Because of this I could shoot three of the flock and Dixon one more--. Saw western grebe on the lake. Brewer, red-winged, and yellow-headed blackbirds in all the moist pasture lands about Bridgeport and other areas further north around Minden--. Black-billed magpies were common in more arid portions along same route--. Saw cliff swallows and Calif gulls in meadow north of Bridgeport. At Big Springs 20 odd miles south of Mono Lake and 3 mi east of highway saw Mt. Bluebirds, chipping sparrows, and western tanagers as we pulled into camp--. Also Stellar jays. Vegetation here open park-land of large yellow pines with sparse Artemisia tridentata understory and aspens and willows along streams--. May 30. Took 2 hr walk around area before going to Mono Lake--. Was hoping to wing some cassin finches. Saw two just outside camp. one was singing from low dead branch on yellow pine--.
